Send us a textIn the second part of our chat, we continue our conversation with Chris (aka Dexta), following his journey from aspiring DJ to co-founder of Planet Wax, the New Cross institution that has become a cornerstone of London's underground dance music scene."Record shops aren't just about selling vinyl—they're about creating a space where the culture can breathe," Dexta explains. In this episode, we discuss how Dexta founded Diffrent Music in 2010 with his friend Jamie. This experimental bass label deliberately countered mainstream trends and quickly became a cult favorite with over 100 releases.Dexta's career evolved through various roles in graphic design at DJ Mag and Hospital Records, where he blended his talents in A&R, broadcasting, and event management. He notably helped organize the popular DJ Mag Bunker nights and co-founded Clashmouth, a vibrant drum & bass vinyl marketplace that strengthened community bonds. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish 1-800-Dubplate with Lewis (aka Sicknote), a specialized dubplate-cutting service, before they both successfully crowdfunded Discworld (later rebranded as Planet Wax). After relocating to New Cross and expanding with a bar, the record shop and venue evolved into a cultural hub for vinyl enthusiasts, artists, and DIY culture. As Dexta reflects, while it's "not a fortune-making business," the true reward lies in preserving authentic music culture for future generations.
Send us a textIn the first of a two-part conversation, we sit down with Chris (aka Dexta), co-founder of Planet Wax, a legendary record shop, bar, venue, and radio station in New Cross dedicated to underground dance music and its surrounding culture and community. This episode explores Dexta's journey through the UK music scene from the late 1990s to early 2010s. Growing up in North London, his musical passion began with compilation albums and cassette tapes, with a particular affinity for The Prodigy and UK garage. Dexta recalls his first production experiments using basic software that came free in a cereal box, before transitioning to DJing after acquiring a pair of belt-drive turntables. The conversation traces his evolution through various music scenes—from UK garage to grime, and eventually to drum and bass. He shares his experiences with pirate radio, first as a listener of Y2K Radio, then as a presenter hosting his own shows on stations like Rush FM, Elite Radio, and UK Bass Radio. These platforms allowed him to connect with fellow DJs and build an audience while honing his skills both as a DJ and presenter.Dexta recounts his early club experiences, including his first gig at age 16 where he played a 15-minute set as part of "Solid Jam Cartel" (SJC). He discusses frequenting iconic London venues like Fabric, The End, and Bar Rumba, where he discovered various subgenres of drum and bass. His musical tastes gradually shifted from "jump up" drum and bass to darker, more underground sounds.Throughout the episode, Dexta reflects on technological changes in music production and distribution—from early software like Mixman and Fruity Loops to the transition of record shops moving online. He also touches on his brief relocation to Bournemouth, where he discovered even darker drum and bass sounds, before returning to London with ambitions to launch his own record label.Support the showhttps://www.youtube.com/@ControlledWeirdnesshttps://open.spotify.com/artist/20nC7cQni8ZrvRC2REZjOIhttps://www.instagram.com/controlledweirdness/https://controlledweirdness.bandcamp.com/Theme song is Controlled Weirdness - Drifting in the Streetshttps://open.spotify.com/track/7GJfmYy4RjMyLIg9nffuktHosted from a South London tower block by Neil Keating aka Controlled Weirdness. We have a Grammy legend on the podcast this week, 11 time winner, it's singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile! Brandi schlepped to New Cross from Windsor where she is staying with her best friend, Sir Elton John. She is about to release a brand new album with Elton, and we heard all about how the album came about - and that the entire process was filmed for a documentary too. Brandi also shared that she lives on a compound in Washington state with all of her close friends and family, that she got married to her wife in London, all about her regular jamming sessions with Joni Mitchell (with wine and Mexican food dished up for everyone!), that it was thanks to Sir Paul McCartney that she met her wife, plus she has THE best idea pitch to Ben & Jerry's for their new Ice Cream flavour - Candy Bar-lile! Brandi & Elton's new album ‘Who Believes In Angels' is released on the 4th April, and you can catch Brandi on her UK & European tour in June & July. Hosted on Acast. This week we have Irish comedy royalty round for dinner, the gorgeous Sharon Horgan. Sharon popped to New Cross and brought her two gorgeous daughters with her. Mum made a Salmon en croute, and I made a Pannetone Bread and Butter pudding. We learned all about Sharon growing up in pubs in Hackney and Ireland, living in squats and being fed by Hare Krishna, writing and working with friend of the pod Rob Delaney on Catastrophe, filming Bad Sisters in Ireland and creating Motherland and brand new spin off Amandaland (which we're very excited for!). Sharon is a total delight, and has co-created some of our favourite series on the telly. Bad Sisters is currently in it's second series and is streaming on Apple TV+ Hosted on Acast. I'm a housewives fan - well, if I'm being honest, I have been religiously loyal to Beverley Hills and now the reboot of NYC, however I knew this would be a biggy for any Real Housewives fan. So I put in the work of consuming 13 series of RHONYC to learn about the one, the only Countess Luann. And goodness me, I'm glad I did! There's many firsts on this episode: having a Countess on, having one of my friends come over to listen, and also having to nip out mid recording for a daughters school choir performance due to our dear Luanne being rather tardy (‘the traffic was awful' – that's the effect of a housewife!)The iconic singer, model, etiquette pro, author & TV personality came over to New Cross looking fabulous in, well, of course Jovani! I fed her some boiled chicken (more delicious than it sounds) & mum made a strudel. She told us all about her friendship with Tilda Swindon, her love of caviar on a potato, her parents regimented sex life & whilst I had to pop out, Luann chatted to mum about growing up as a family of 7 (!) in Connecticut. This was a wild one but a GREAT one! Enjoy!Luann's upcoming show ‘Countess Cabaret' comes to the UK in February – tickets are on sale now. you don't want to miss it. Welcome to our first EigenLayer Unlocked podcast from Singapore. Over the next few weekends, you can expect dynamic, high-quality, fast paced conversations from Andy and builders within the EigenLayer ecosystem. Today, we're diving into the idea of stateless apps with Siddharth Lalwani, CEO of Skate. Skate's approach focuses on solving the liquidity fragmentation issue we see across multiple chains. They're building a unified AMM model as well as the underlying technology for apps to exist across many chains. By leveraging EigenLayer's as an AVS, Skate uses cryptoeconomic security to ensure cross-chain transactions and build an ecosystem of “stateless” apps. Andy dives into Siddharth's background, why they have chosen to use EigenLayer, how the design works, and where Skate is headed. With all the buzz around apps, this was a refreshing conversation about one potential way we'll see apps be construed across the inevitable future consisting of thousands of chains. In Episode 15, I speak with Uncle G, also known as Urban Intelligence. Godfrey has been deeply embedded in South London's music culture since his family relocated to South East London from the tumultuous and politically unstable climate of Chile in the 1970s. Growing up on the Morris Walk estate in Woolwich, he was exposed to music from various angles, starting with all-night Caribbean-influenced blues parties in his local community. These were DIY events where a sound system and a bar were set up in a flat, and reggae, soul, boogie, and funk reverberated until the early hours. In 1982, Malcolm McLaren's B-boy classic "Buffalo Girls" video aired on Top of the Pops, introducing kids across the UK to scratching, popping, and graffiti. Godfrey delved into breakdancing and, by connecting with several Woolwich crews, became involved in the emerging hip-hop culture. As house music made its way to the UK, a friend secured him a role helping mail out membership cards for his brother's party called Biology. These were legendary early acid house raves, and G started attending these, along with other iconic events like RIP at Clink Street and Rave in the Cave, an all-night acid party in an arch next to Elephant and Castle train station. Memorable nights also took place at the Tunnel Club, a notoriously rough and ready venue right next to the entrance to the BlackWall Tunnel.Initially, Godfrey started as a DJ at local house parties in the 80s. As the rave scene gained momentum, he began DJing at larger events and playing on pirate radio stations such as Shockin FM and Wax FM. Radio and the quest for new music to share with people have been his passion ever since. Uncle G now hosts a show every Friday from 6-8 pm, streamed live from Planet Wax record shop in New Cross. We conclude our conversation by delving into the significance of record shops like Planet Wax, which not only sell music but also serve as spaces for vibrant and diverse South London communities to come together, forge friendships, and make connections through their shared love of music.Support the showhttps://www.youtube.com/@ControlledWeirdnesshttps://open.spotify.com/artist/20nC7cQni8ZrvRC2REZjOIhttps://www.instagram.com/controlledweirdness/https://controlledweirdness.bandcamp.com/Theme song is Controlled Weirdness - Drifting in the Streetshttps://open.spotify.com/track/7GJfmYy4RjMyLIg9nffuktHosted from a South London tower block by Neil Keating aka Controlled Weirdness. Jamaica poet and artist, Linton Kwesi Johnson is the second living poet, and the only black one, to have his poems published in the Penguin Modern Classics Series in 2002. Born in Chapelton, a rural parish of Clarendon in Jamaica, Linton Kwesi Johnson migrated to Britain in 1963 with his parents as part of the Windrush generation that left Jamaica on the eve of independence. Johnson attended Tulse Hill School in Lambeth, where he joined the British Black Panther Movement, helping to organize poetry workshops within the movement, while developing his work with Rasta Love, a group of poets and drummers. Johnson studied sociology at Goldsmiths College in New Cross, London, graduating in 1973. He wrote for New Musical Express, Melody Maker, and Black Music in the 1970s, while working as the first paid library resources and education officer at the Keskidee Centre, where his poem "Voices of the Living and the Dead" was staged and produced by Jamaican novelist Lindsay Barrett. Johnson's poetry involves the recitation of his own verse in Jamaican patois, mixing it with dub-reggae, usually written in collaboration with reggae producer Dennis Bovell. In this episode, we present a poetry performance by Linton Kwesi Johnson at the Leeds West Indian Centre held to commemorate 50 years since the death of David Oluwale. This episode is part of the African History Series of the Africanist Press featuring voices, individuals, and institutions engaged in shaping the study of Africa's past and present developments.

Reggae poet Linton Kwesi Johnson reveals the influences and experiences that inspired his own creativity. Born in Jamaica, he moved to south London in 1963 at the age of eleven. He made his name as a performance poet, reciting politically motivated verse to a dub-reggae backbeat, and becoming a powerful voice of resistance and protest in response to racism on the streets of Britain in the 1970s. He became the first black poet to be published in the Penguin Modern Classics series, was awarded the PEN Pinter Prize in 2020, and recently published a collection of prose under the title Time Come. On stage and on record, he is renowned for angry and uncompromising works such as Five Nights Of Bleeding, Sonny's Lettah, and Iglan Is a Bitch. For This Cultural Life, Linton Kwesi Johnson recalls growing up in poverty in rural Jamaica, where his grandmother told him ghost stories and read The Bible. Appalled at the racism he experienced, he joined the Black Panthers whilst still at school and became a political activist. He began to write and perform poetry, set to music and delivered in Jamaican patois, after being inspired by reggae artists such as Prince Buster and U-Roy, and the American group The Last Poets. Johnson also talks about the tragic fire that killed 13 young partygoers in New Cross, south London in 1981, an event that he commemorated in one of his best known works, New Craas Massahkah. Dave Okumu & The 7 Generations - "Blood Ah Go Run (feat. Wesley Joseph & ESKA)" from the 2023 album I Came From Love on Transgressive. Mercury Prize-nominated artist Dave Okumu returns with his new project, Dave Okumu & The 7 Generations, a name he says honors "my actual ancestors, the ancestors of others, my musical ancestors, and my descendants." Their debut album, I Came From Love, will be released April 14th via Transgressive Records. In a press statement, the UK-based guitarist/producer explains, "the narrative of this record emerged in tandem with the origin of its musical journey, through a rumination on survival, ancestry and heritage. The account of the young west African girl who was transported to South Carolina in 1756 and sold to the slave owner Elias Ball and the subsequent unearthing and presentation of her story to her descendants became an emblematic framework for these songs, opening doors to many aspects of the diasporic experience. The music stands in loving defiance of any forces that would seek to disconnect us from our collective history. As I consciously stand before my ancestors through the medium of this sound world, I proclaim that ‘You survived so I might live.'” On today's Song of the Day, in particular, he reflects on the New Cross house fire in 1981 that killed 13 Black teenagers in South London. “Living in an area as culturally rich and diverse as southeast London, I feel touched by an atmosphere of transcendence forged through a particular type of adversity. When you walk the streets and so many cultures are represented within a community, it's difficult not to ask the questions ‘how did these people get here and what have their ancestors passed through so that I can have the life I am experiencing now?' The story of the New Cross Fire and the subsequent response from different factions of society is one such trial, embodying a process which came to shape a significant element of the discourse around race relations in this country. Living in this part of London, I want to remember and honor those who lost their lives in that fire as their sacrifice, along with many others, feeds directly into my experience of this world.” Read the full story at KEXP.orgSupport the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
She's a Hollywood actress, a singer, a hugely successful film producer, and this week we managed to get Rita Wilson to New Cross to join us for lunch. Rita told us all about her love of everything Greek and her shared love of Skopelos (where they filmed her Mamma Mia films!), her new duets album 'Now & Forever', her favourite dessert of Lime Jello mixed with cream cheese (!!!), and how she and the fabulous Nora Ephron would regularly swap their favourite recipes over dinner parties. We absolutely loved having you over Rita, we'll let you know how our attempt at the lime jello pudding turns out! x Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Tamer Hassan is a British actor, best known for his role as the leader of the Millwall firm, opposite Danny Dyer, in The Football Factory. He was born and brought up in New Cross, London into a Turkish Cypriot family and started boxing at the age of 10. He started an amateur boxing career at the age of 17 and compiled a record of 95-10 with 86 knockouts. Having sustained an injury in amateur boxing, he turned to running nightclubs and restaurants. Tamer joins Steven to talk about the effect of fame upon his family and how he circumnavigates the pressures that come with it, and how he has developed the discipline required to stay at the top of the game. KEY TAKEAWAYS Whether you're in the public eye or not, you have to take a step back from every situation when it comes to your children, and look at it as a parent, rather than a celebrity. Even if you do exist in the public eye, you have to keep it real. Fame can vanish overnight. You need to make sure you're true to yourself and see yourself as a human being first and foremost. Life comes at you very fast, especially when children arrive. The freedom you had as a youth suddenly evaporates, and you find yourself confronted with responsibilities. The great ones step up. BEST MOMENTS 'Kids are kids. They never leave you. They just get more expensive' 'Here should be that structure in place where we do have a support system' 'The discipline does go through to your work ethic and your family ethic' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sulley Study Tamer Hassan Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/realtamerhassan/?hl=en ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success.
