After days of intense diplomatic drama over Ukraine, and as President Zelenskyy visits the UK, we debate the morality of making peace. The Ukrainian President's meeting with US President Donald Trump ended in a tense confrontation. It had all begun politely but descended into a verbal bust-up. Mr Trump said it made for good television, but with thousands of lives at stake—not to mention global peace—we wanted to explore what price should be paid for peace and what the rights and wrongs of continuing to fight are. Emily Buchanan speaks to Jan Halper Hayes, Republican commentator and former member of the Trump White House transition team, and Professor Janina Dill, Co-director of the Oxford University Institute for Ethics, Law, and Armed Conflict. There's been further fallout from the Church of England's review into the handling of allegations of abuse by the late John Smyth. This was the review that led to the resignation of Archbishop Justin Welby. Now, ten clergy named in that review could face disciplinary proceedings, including former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey and the Rev Andrew Cornes, who was due to be on the committee selecting the next Archbishop of Canterbury. However, the Church's National Safeguarding Team says other clergy criticised in the report will not face disciplinary action due to "insufficient evidence to meet the threshold for disciplinary proceedings." We heard from one alleged victim of abuse, Augustine Tanner-Ihm, who is a vicar himself, and asked him whether he thought the latest Disciplinary Action Measure was a step in the right direction.Hollywood is gathering its stars for the 97th Academy Awards, otherwise known as the Oscars. Many of the films up for awards have a religious element—Wicked, Conclave, A Complete Unknown, The Brutalist, and more. On The Sunday Programme over the last few months, we've been hearing from some of the key people involved in their creation. We revisit some of the highlights.Presenter: Emily Buchanan Producers: Bara'atu Ibrahim & Katy Davis Studio Managers: Simon Highfield & Carwyn Griffiths Editor: Rajeev Gupta

The resignation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, made headline news across the UK and the wider world. This itself points to the ongoing public significance of the CofE and the knock-on effects for the wider church. Why did Welby choose to resign after pressure of public disrepute from external liberal media and government, rather than after the pressure from faithful Christians over his handling of LGBT+ issues or his support for other-religious festivals? What does this tell us about the priorities not only of his own leadership, but of the institution more broadly? How did Welby's evangelical convictions erode during his time in office? Was the authority of Scripture subtly replaced by a vague sense of "theological reflection"? What lessons can be learned for leaders and institutions going forward regarding "reputation"? Andy and Aaron cover all this and more in the latest episode of Pod of the Gaps. ** SUPPORT POD OF THE GAPS HERE: https://soundcloud.com/wkop-podcast ** RESOURCES: - Welby Resignation statement https://www.archbishopofcanterbury.org/news/news-and-statements/statement-archbishop-canterbury-0 - Lambeth Statement on LLF https://www.archbishopofcanterbury.org/news/news-and-statements/lambeth-palace-statement-living-love-and-faith - 'How church attendance crumbled under Justin Welby' https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/11/12/church-attendance-falls-justin-welby-archbishop-canterbury/ - 'Diwali, the Gospel, and AoC Welby' https://virtueonline.org/diwali-gospel-and-archbishop-justin-welby

We've come to expect the politically correct and increasingly “woke” posture of many of the Church of England's official statements and policies in recent years. Recent announcements on issues such as race, Islam, sexuality, and even evangelism, showcase a desire to “play nice” with the secular and multicultural political establishment rather than offering a genuinely prophetic voice. But is the CofE's descent into ever more progressive viewpoints is inevitable? What about those who seek to reform Anglicanism from within, restoring its evangelical roots? Is there a case for disestablishing the Church of England altogether? What would we lose (or gain) if we did? Andy (a reluctant Anglican) and Aaron (a Methodist exile) dive into this entirely non-controversial topic with the usual mix of wit, wisdom, and insight. Church of England revs with a difference Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sit down to discuss the big talking points in church and state. This time: the Church of England is hiring a Deconstructing Whiteness officer. The role can be yours alongside a salary of 36k. In other CofE news, a billion pounds is going to be raised by the Church Commissioners to repay the descendants of African slaves and the report recommending this also suggests an apology for displacing "traditional African religion". Church of England vicars with a difference Daniel French, Thomas Pelham, and Jamie Franklin sit down to talk about the most important issues in church and state. This time, we have a special conversation about the Church of England's most recent General Synod in which the Bishop of Dover said that every parish in the CofE should draw up a "race action plan" and that we should be more woke than we already are. In other news, an amendment to a motion concerning the controversial Living in Love and Faith process claiming that there exist people who do not agree to agreeing to disagree is rejected for somewhat obscure reasons. We ask the important questions: Does racism really exist in the Church of England? If it does, what legitimate means should the Church take to address it? Should vicars and, indeed the Church, be political in nature, or spiritual, or both? This, and much much more as ever. From the Archives: First Aired in 2011, today's Classic Replay takes an in-depth look at some of the most contentious passages in the Bible when it comes to women's roles and leadership in the Church. In 1995 the Church of England allowed the ordination of Women priests, but the question of whether the Bible forbids female authority in the church remains today. Christina Rees is a writer and broadcaster and served on the Archbishop's Council and the General Synod for 25 years. For many years Christina was Chair of WATCH (Women and the Church), the group that led the campaign for women bishops and that works for women's equality in the Church. Our other guest is the Rev John Richardson, who disagrees with female ordination. John was a speaker, lecturer and a member of the former conservative Evangelical grouping Reform within the CofE. John passed away a few years after this episode in 2014. Today's guests debate passages in the New Testament that appear to forbid women speaking in Church, the role of husbands and wives and the practical realities of men and women being church leaders. Fergus Butler-Gallie: Confessions of a young priest God calls into ordained ministry those who he cannot save any other way. That's what Fergus Butler-Gallie was once told. It was a tongue-in-cheek remark, nevertheless, Fergus thinks there's something in it. The 31 year-old was ordained in his mid 20s and has since enjoyed a front row seat to the peculiarities and eccentricities which make up the fabric of ordained ministry. His latest book, Touching Cloth, is a treasure trove of entertaining anecdotes and in this candid interview with Premier Christianity's Sam Hailes, Fergus retells some of the stand out moments, including the time he and a group of flower arrangers were stuck in the vestibule trying to disable an exceptionally loud rape alarm. He also opens up about the difficulties he's faced within the institution of the CofE and gives his view on what the future of the Church might look like. Church of England revs with a difference Daniel French and Jamie Franklin sit down to review the big talking points in Church and culture. This week, we catch up with Daniel's thoughts on the liberalisation of the clergy in the CofE, whilst Jamie comes face-to-face with Antifa at the March for Life. On Twitter, pro-life campaigners are being lambasted by liberal vicars, whereas a Tik Tok video espousing the freedom and joy of not having kids, watching box sets and making shakshuka has gone viral. We also review several encouraging emails that we think show encouraging trends in the culture, particularly among young men who are interested in serious forms of Christianity. And we ask (again!) why the central hierarchies of the churches are ignoring these glorious opportunities. That, a question on the Sabbath, and much much more as always! For Jamie's Substack, mentioned at the beginning of this episode, please see: https://jamiefranklin.substack.comPlease Support!Support us on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/irreverend) or Buy Me a Coffee (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/irreverend). Church of England vicars with a difference Thomas Pelham and Jamie Franklin sit down to give a spiritual perspective on the big events of the day. This week, after an absence on the show, Tom gives his own inimitable take on the coronation of King Charles III, we review a Daily Telegraph headline article that tells us that the lockdowns were an enormous, disastrous mistake (about three years too late), and we talk about Laura Dodsworth's recent Substack article in which she shares her desire to go back to church but finds difficulty with the wokeness and lack of spirituality on display in local CofE outlets. We ask why the Church of England hierarchy continues to promote the alternative green religion of Net Zero and engages so little with traditional Christian themes of sin, repentance, forgiveness and eternal life. Maybe it's time for us to try a different approach?Question the Rev asks us to consider the significance of a pride flag on the set of The Chosen and a fourteen year-old convert sends us an email to ask for advice about growing in the faith in the midst of a hostile world. Elizabeth II had spoken very personally of her faith on a number of occasions, and church events are a huge part of the royal calendar, whether it is the Commonwealth Day service or the family's traditional Easter and Christmas gatherings at Windsor and Sandringham. The Rt Revd Dr Graham Tomlin, former Bishop of Kensington and now running the CofE's Centre for Cultural Witness programme, joins Pod Save The King host Ann Gripper to explore the relationship between the royal family and the church. They also reflect on the religious significance of the coronation, its regalia and the impact of the change in Sovereign on the Church.
