The following two decades saw him win a Gemini Award for writing on ‘This Hour Has 22 Minutes', be anointed Comedian of the Year at the Canadian Comedy Awards, create and star in two television series, ‘Blackfly' on GLOBAL TV (‘an original and uniquely Canadian series'…Globe and Mail ) and ‘The Ron James Show', that ran for five years on CBC and landed him a Screen Award nomination for Best Actor In A Comedy Series. Ben and Cathy go on a journey for truth in there 2-hour discussion which was the first time they spoke in person. Cathy reached out to bed in early April after seeing a few of Ben's Doug Ford dubs. Comedy is our last line of defense and these two comedians have the power to bring truth to light through humor and intellect. Ben also does a 45 minute hilarious intro, complaining about calling his LIberal MP, Christia Freeland and speaking to her parliamentary assistant for 2 hours. Over the weekend, German researchers held a concert with over 1500 music fans to study how COVID-19 could spread at big indoor events. Here in Canada, provinces are still capping numbers at indoor shows and many venues are staying closed. Some have permanently shut down. This has been a huge challenge for musicians, and performing artists more widely. Today on Front Burner, we convene a panel with two Canadians who work in the arts, and depend on live audiences for their livelihoods. Miranda Mulholland is a Juno-nominated fiddler and singer, label owner, and a musician’s rights advocate. Nour Hadidi is a professional stand-up comedian who has written for This Hour Has 22 Minutes.
This week our guest is 2020 Juno award winner and This Hour Has 22 Minutes writer, Sophie Buddle. Sophie (Ph.D.) gives us her psychological breakdown of boys' taste in art and then tells us about her experience starting stand-up when she was just 15 (!). And her Two Truths and a Lie is captivating! Bon appetit!
In this weeks episode, Tobin is joined by the hilarious, Cathy Jones from This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Cathy talks about getting into comedy with the help of her brother, Andy and how that lead her to being on CODCO and The Wonderful Grand Band which eventually lead to herself and Mary creating This Hour Has 22 Minutes. Cathy also explains her relationship with Mary Walsh, and how she came up with the characters she played and we have a conversation about introverts and extroverts. It's a fun time had by all, just be aware, there may be swearing. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode I had the opportunity to interview my wonderfully talented friend Aba Amuquandoh about her career as a sketch comedian in Toronto. Not only is she hilarious, she's an award winning playwright and member of the well-known sketch comedy troupe The Sketchersons, AND, I'm lucky enough to call her my friend!Update: Aba now a regular writer and performer on This Hour Has 22 Minutes! Totally called the fame thing, Aba is a regular superstar! AHHHH!!!!!!!I met Aba almost a year ago in our conservatory class at the Toronto Second City Training Centre. In this time I've been so grateful to have the opportunity to learn alongside her, for many reasons. As a writer and performer, one of Aba's key talents is her ability to rapidly generate deeply layered points of view with improv and sketch comedy, which consistently blows me away and challenges me to work harder at the craft. Add the bonus of her unwavering support for her troupe members, her ability to cultivate an inclusive community of learning AND her friendship, and you've got one of the coolest people in Toronto. Aba also shares how she holds herself accountable for jumping on opportunities to grow and develop her career as they come her way. By recognizing imposter syndrome when it emerges and reminding herself that she absolutely can accomplish her goals, she continues to challenge herself to keep moving forward. Often times imposter syndrome will come out of comments she hears about her work from others. “At the beginning of my career I definitely took those comments for face value. I thought they were worth something. Newsflash, they're fucking not.”“Sometimes I have this, I have this habit of making things feel a lot bigger than they are in my mind. You know, you make them so grand in your mind, you inflate them. they seem way more important than they are. And when you don't do well, it can, it can be a blockage. It can feel as though, while this is the end of the road, or like, why try anymore? Like, I embarrass myself so bad that I don't, maybe I'm not cut out for this and all those things, all those moments that I felt two years ago, now that I look back, you know, they they're absolutely nothing.”And the big takeaway from this conversation was understanding our own definitions of balance within our careers, and how it looks for everyone individually.“I think near the, end of last year, though, I did begin to realize that I need to take more time for myself as a creator, as somebody who is, who has to be on. In order to do the jobs that I do, It's important to have periods of rest. I think that for a lot of young creatives or people who are up and coming, we sometimes imagine that our schedule is going to have time for a day job that gives you a good paycheque every two weeks. And then underneath that, you're going to have your creative career where you can perform at night. Then you can schedule vacation time and hang out with friends. “And unfortunately it doesn't work like that at all. I think I expected that. And instead what I got were these weird periods, like two, three months at a time where everything is so busy and I'm getting not that much rest, but then a month or so after that I'll have an extended period of not working and not getting gigs and kind of just chilling at home.“I think that is also a type of balance. And for everybody our balance doesn't have to look the same. It can be this organized schedule of taking time off, or it can be working in these crazy spurts and then having extended periods of rest.”Links mentioned in this episode:Nostalgique Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/nostalgique/id1492223483 The Sketchersons https://www.sketchersons.com/Aba's Twitter https://twitter.com/abaistalkingAba's Instagram @abaquann

Scott Sawyer is the writer and artist behind North – an independent comic chronicling the adventures of Canada’s newest superhero team. Think of North as the Justice League if the Justice League were made in Canada and on their first adventure together, they found themselves dangling from the CN Tower. Then, we talk about his failed pilot for a Canadian superhero show, Split City, starring The Kid’s in the Hall’s Scott Thompson and Geri Hall from This Hour Has 22 Minutes. This week, Ken Steele looks back at some of the biggest PR headaches afflicting Canadian colleges and universities in the past year, looking for common causes and some lessons we can learn about crisis communications. Academia may well be the most challenging environment in which to manage messaging, with opinionated faculty, unrestrained students, and concerned parents, alumni, and taxpayers in the community. Without a doubt, many PR headaches are caused by the students, intentionally or not. In previous episodes we’ve looked at sexist behavior in social media and during orientation, but Dalhousie’s School of Dentistry struggled with the biggest PR headache of 2015, when 13 male students posted sexist, misogynistic remarks to a supposedly private Facebook group. Protests, suspensions, a task force – in all, it cost the school about $650,000. And the underlying culture of sexism should have been addressed years earlier. CBC’s “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” parody commercial – https://youtu.be/RtffrcWeMf0 Last year the University of Toronto had to ramp up campus security in the wake of a series of online threats posted by an anonymous user named “Kill Feminists.” The University of Ottawa coped with the fallout of the alleged sex assault by male hockey players, and a $6 million class action lawsuit. Several universities tore down posters for “White Students Unions.” 2 Montréal CÉGEPs had to cope with more than a dozen students leaving Canada to join Jihad. But of course, students aren’t the only creative, intelligent and outspoken people on your campus. Last year we saw plenty of PR headaches caused by faculty members, too. In the UK there was Nobel-prize-winning biochemist Tim Hunt, and his ill-advised attempt at humour about the distraction of women scientists in the lab. (His botched apology made things far worse, and cost him his job.) In Ontario it was St Lawrence College business professor Rick Coupland, who was fired for violent homophobic comments last summer. At Carleton University, biology professor Root Gorelick has caused a stir with his blog, commenting on his experiences as a member of the university board of governors. He sees himself as elected by faculty, with an obligation to his constituents, but the rest of the board and the administration are concerned about the ways in which his blogs do not always agree with the official minutes. He is accused of attacking the personal integrity of fellow board members. Carleton has put in place a new code of conduct for board members, making it clear that governors must not criticize decisions once they have been made. Several campus groups are concerned that Gorelick may be removed for his refusal to sign this “gag order.” It seems pretty clear that when students or faculty behave badly, the institution needs to condemn their actions swiftly and unambiguously, suspend the perpetrators, start a thorough investigation, and possibly a restorative justice process. The institution may have to address the problem, through enhanced campus security, harassment policies, or codes of conduct. Sometimes swift action will lead to accusations of overreaction, such as at Ottawa and Dalhousie, where potentially innocent students are considered guilty by association. But these responses seemed to be the most popular approach in 2015. Next time we’ll look at some of the most serious higher ed headaches of all. And as the metaphor might suggest, they often start at the top, with presidents and board chairs. Meanwhile you might like to check out our review of the biggest higher ed headaches of 2014 - https://youtu.be/TJaZsXv68s4 Ken Steele is available to facilitate workshops or present at conferences and on campuses about PR headaches and how to manage media relations in a crisis. Last year we saw plenty of PR headaches caused by faculty members, too.In the UK there was Nobel-prize-winning biochemist Tim Hunt, and his ill-advised attempt at humour about the distraction of women scientists in the lab.
