Rerun: Capt. James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Lt. Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) embraced and kissed on "Plato's Stepchildren"; an episode of ‘Star Trek' broadcast on 22nd November, 1968 - just a year after the Supreme Court declared interracial marriage to be legal. However, despite popular belief that this was TV's first interracial kiss, it wasn't. It wasn't even the first interracial kiss on TV featuring William Shatner… In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly examine just how slowly attitudes to ‘mixed marriage' were shifting in the United States; compare this iconic Trekkie moment to homoerotic frat-boy YouTube videos; and reveal how the actors concerned deliberately sabotaged ‘the wide' so their kiss would be screened coast-to-coast… Further Reading: • Kirk and Uhura kiss on ‘Star Trek' (Paramount Television, 1968): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lThvEsP5-9Y • ‘'Star Trek's' interracial kiss 50 years ago boldly went where none had gone before' (NBC News, 2018): https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/star-trek-s-interracial-kiss-50-years-ago-went-boldly-n941181 • ‘Nichelle Nichols on filming the first interracial kiss on American television' (Archive of American Television, 2010): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hKKkGhEDoU ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' Follow the homies Cam (Cameron Cox) and Dylan (Dylan Hernandez) two former AMC Theater employees as they take a nostalgic trip back in time to rewatch films that mean the most to them! Today we do things a little different and discuss a show! The 2018 Netflix smash hit "The Haunting of Hill House" With Special Guest ANDREW GARCIA!! The Haunting of Hill House is an American supernatural horror drama television miniseries created and directed by Mike Flanagan, produced by Amblin Television and Paramount Television for Netflix, and serves as the first entry in The Haunting anthology series. It is loosely based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. The plot alternates between two timelines, following five adult siblings whose paranormal experiences at Hill House continue to haunt them in the present day, and flashbacks depicting events leading up to the eventful night in 1992 when the family fled from the mansion. The ensemble cast features Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, and Victoria Pedretti as the siblings in adulthood, with Carla Gugino and Henry Thomas as parents Olivia and Hugh Crain, and Timothy Hutton appearing as an older version of Hugh. TV CONFIDENTIAL: A radio talk show about television

TVC 652.1: Ed welcomes Joel Thurm, former Vice President of Talent and Casting for both Paramount Television and NBC, and one of the most accomplished and most respected casting directors in the film and TV industry. Joel's memoir, Sex, Drugs, and Pilot Season: Confessions of a Casting Director, provides both a backstage look at the boardrooms of New York and the executive suites in Hollywood (particularly during the 1970s, '80s, and '90s) and a history of how TV casting decisions were often made during the era of the three-network universe. Topics this segment include how Joel recognized, before anyone else, that John Travolta was more than just another teen idol; how Joel and Travolta helped convince Olivia Newton-John to play Sandy in the movie version of Grease (after Newton-John had voiced her reluctance to do the part); and how Joel first became involved in casting after working for theatrical director David Merrick in New York City. It wasn't even the first interracial kiss on TV featuring William Shatner… In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly examine just how slowly attitudes to ‘mixed marriage' were shifting in the United States; compare this iconic Trekkie moment to homoerotic frat-boy YouTube videos; and reveal how the actors concerned deliberately sabotaged ‘the wide' so their kiss would be screened coast-to-coast… Further Reading:• Kirk and Uhura kiss on ‘Star Trek' (Paramount Television, 1968): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lThvEsP5-9Y• ‘'Star Trek's' interracial kiss 50 years ago boldly went where none had gone before' (NBC News, 2018):https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/star-trek-s-interracial-kiss-50-years-ago-went-boldly-n941181• ‘Nichelle Nichols on filming the first interracial kiss on American television' (Archive of American Television, 2010):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hKKkGhEDoUFor bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/RetrospectorsWe'll be back tomorrow! In a short time, he turned KIIS-FM into the number one revenue generating radio station in America. With unprecedented ratings success, Dees garnered many accolades including being named Billboard Radio Personality Of The Year ten years in a row. Additional honors included the Marconi Award, induction into the National Radio Hall Of Fame, and his induction into the National Association Of Broadcasters' Hall Of Fame.Latest ventures expanded Dees' abundant entertainment brands to mobile apps. His innovative hit music app BYOChannel streams an ever-expanding universe of music channels, plus invites users to "build their own" personalized channels for FREE using its growing 40-million track song library. Coca-Cola C2 (also referred to as Coke C2, C2 Cola, or simply C2) was a cola-flavored beverage introduced by The Coca-Cola Company first in Japan, then later on June 7, 2004 in the United States (and shortly thereafter, Canada), in response to the low-carbohydrate diet trend. This Coke product was marketed as having half the carbohydrates, sugars and calories compared to standard Coca-Cola. It contains aspartame, acesulfame potassium, and sucralose in addition to the high fructose corn syrup typically found in cola beverages distributed in America. Aside from the high fructose corn syrup, one 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola C2 contains 19 mg of aspartame, 4 mg of sucralose and 19 mg of acesulfame potassium. The packaging design differs from other Coke products in that the logos are printed in black. For marketing on radio and television, and movie theaters the Queen song "I Want to Break Free" was used. When it was first introduced, though, The Rolling Stones song "You Can't Always Get What You Want" was used. American sales did not live up to early expectations mainly due to customer disinterest in a mid-calorie soda, and partly due to the success of Coca-Cola Zero, a zero-calorie version of Coca-Cola; however, Coca-Cola said the brand would remain in its lineup, even while Pepsi discontinued its equivalent product, Pepsi Edge, in late 2005, just one year after its introduction. Many store shelves completely replaced the product with Coca-Cola Zero due to display, shelving and storage limitations, and with the introduction of Coca-Cola Cherry Zero, the product disappeared from all store shelves where it had previously remained, and in 2013, it was replaced by Coca-Cola Life, which was marketed for using Stevia as opposed to artificial sweeteners. The United Paramount Network (UPN) was an American broadcast television network that launched on January 16, 1995. The network was originally owned by Chris-Craft Industries' United Television; Viacom (through its Paramount Television unit, which produced most of the network's series) turned the network into a joint venture in 1996 after acquiring a 50% stake in the network, and subsequently purchased Chris-Craft's remaining stake in 2000. In December 2005, UPN was spun off to CBS Corporation when Viacom split into two separate companies. CBS Corporation and Time Warner jointly announced on January 24, 2006 that the companies would shut down UPN and competitor The WB to launch a new joint venture network later that year. UPN ceased broadcasting on September 15, 2006, with The WB following suit two days later. Select programs from both networks moved to the new network, The CW, when it launched on September 18, 2006. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dwight-allen/message

Passionate, witty, vulnerable, intelligent, and honest – critics describing the work of bestselling author Elliot Perlman.A born storyteller I recall many school lunchtimes and weekends - Ell writing, creating scripts, novels, and songs. As one of the only other writers I knew, I was inspired. It was while practicing law in 1994 that he won The Age short story competition for ‘The Reasons I Won't Be Coming', which became the titular story of his bestselling short story collection. In it explores complex worlds of lovers, poets, lawyers, immigrants, students, and murderers; the corporate betrayals, the lost opportunities, the hopes, the fears, and the vagaries of desire. It would jettison him into the global literary world and see him go on to write a further 4 bestselling novels, spend nine years as a New York-based writer and swap out his law career for his passion to become a fully-fledged successful published author. His debut novel, “Three Dollars” is a deft portrait of a man attempting to retain his humanity, his family, and his sense of humor in grim and pitiless times of downsizing, outsourcing, and privatizing. The big-screen adaptation – co-written by Perlman director by Robert Connolly, and starring David Wenham and Frances O'Connor – was awarded the 2005 Australian Film Industry Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. In SEVEN TYPES OF AMBIGUITY (2003)Following years of unrequited love, an out-of-work school teacher takes matters into his own hands, in a story of obsessive love in an age of obsessive materialism.THE STREET SWEEPERRecently released from prison, Lamont Williams, an African American janitor in a Manhattan hospital and father of a little girl he can't locate, strikes up an unlikely friendship with an elderly patient, a Holocaust survivor who had been a prisoner in Auschwitz. As these two men try to survive in early 21st-century New York, history comes to life in ways neither of them could have predicted. Elliot is a wonderful mix of down to earth authentic Australian and fierce intellectual. As a teenager and an avid Carlton fan, he wrote an ode to his favorite Carlton player called “ I want to be like Stephen Silvagni” something we all ended up singing at recess, yet he'd create mixed tapes of the latest greatest bands and give you an extensive list, if not the actual books of his latest top ten books you must read. And well I did! His recent best selling novel “Maybe The Horse Will Talk” is an exemplification of this incisive, comical, timely, and engaging skill - Elliot has always had a talent for capturing the moment and tapping into the zeitgeist. Now optioned by Paramount Television his latest novel, THE HORSE WILL TALK is palpable and relatable. “I thought, let's tell a story of adults in this incredibly precarious world of work where so many … people are subject to what gets called ‘work-family conflict' – that situation where the demands of the world of work are incompatible with the demands of family and social bonds,” Perlman says.“You can't properly satisfy both. And that's the case whether you're experiencing over-work in a competitive workplace or insufficient work and insufficient income in the ever-growing, ever-threatening sideshow that is the gig economy.”As one of my favorite people in the world I'm in awe of Elliot's drive, determination, and courage - as a storyteller, he taps into the social fabric and psyche - always questioning and sensitively and empathetically carving his characters with the love and tenderness of a true artisan.

Don Reed joins Maija DiGiorgio, Heather McConnell, Felicia Chappelle, Pamela Green and Masavia Greer.Don Reed (HBO, Snap Judgment, East 14th) is a multi-hyphenate, comedian, actor, writer, producer, director, solo performer described as a "solo show powerhouse" and a comedic molotov-cocktail of storytelling, characters, sound-fx, impersonations and improvisation. His performance on an Robert Townsend HBO Special of up and coming comedians years ago caught the attention a few Hollywood players that led to the creation of many recurring and guest starring roles for him on "A Different World", "The Cosby Show" and others. Around this time, Don received some invaluable advice that spurred him to dive into the NACA college circuit, performing standup at over 300 colleges.During the same window, Don began doing audience warm-up for several sitcoms, which led to writing and creative consulting on several of those shows. Reed spent the next several years behind the camera successfully writing, producing and doing voice-over work (credits include "Spiderman", "The Flintstones", "Johnny Quest" etc.) He wrote and directed several short films for HBO, once casting himself, inadvertently sparking the revival of his on camera and performing career. His HBO shorts garnered the attention of Paramount Television who cast him as a series regular and writer on the sketch comedy show "Off Limits." His performances on that show caught the eyes of "MAD TV" executives who were producing NBC's "The RERUN Show" where he was cast as a series regular. (credits include - Comedy Central, Showtime Aspen Comedy Festival, Co-Executive Producer of "Celebrity Home Videos."Over time, Don transitioned into what many publications (The New Yorker, San Francisco Chronicle, New York Times) have referred to as the aforementioned "solo show powerhouse", writing, performing, directing and producing 5 solo shows running Off Broadway NYC, San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley (Marsh Theaters). His flagship show the award winning "East 14th" was the 2016 WINNER of the TBA: Theater Bay Area Award for Outstanding Production of a Solo Show and an NAACP Double Nominee for Best Actor & Best Playwright. The Classic Film: Aliens (1986) “Ellen Ripley is rescued by a deep salvage team after being in hypersleep for 57 years. The moon that the Nostromo visited has been colonized, but contact is lost. This time, colonial marines have impressive firepower, but will that be enough?” (IMDb.com). I mean, come on, it’s Aliens. You know what’s up. The Modern Film: Alien: Covenant (2017) “The crew of a colony ship, bound for a remote planet, discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination and must attempt a harrowing escape” (Twentieth Century Fox). With Prometheus and its place in the Alien timeline winding up a little too bizarre and esoteric for the average Alien fan, it seems Ridley Scott and Fox felt compelled to compromise and bring its sequel closer to general expectations. In doing so, they’ve managed to make a relatively good movie that’s the worst of both worlds. Audio Sources: "Alien: Covenant" produced by Scott Free Productions, et al. Oh, and we ate some Crack Pie, courtesy of Momofuku Milkbar. And it was fuuuuckin' tasty.  NEWS HIGHLIGHTS THIS WEEK: "Big Mouth" has been renewed for a third season. Jon Cryer has been cast as Lex Luthor on "Supergirl." Benedict Cumberbatch was almost cast as Vampire Bill in HBO's "True Blood." A "Jack Reacher" TV series is in the works at Paramount Television. According to TV Line, the books' author, Lee Child, said, “for all his talent, [Tom Cruise] didn’t have that physicality.” So, for the TV series, they’re looking for someone who more closely matches the books’ description of Reacher. Basically, to sum up, Tom Cruise is too short. SYFY announced its first original late-night animated series, "Alien News Desk." In this episode, I get real with DJ Tambe. For those who don't know DJ, DJ was on Paramount Television's Ink Master and the only contestant to win multiple times and he did it back to back seasons! I wanted to bring DJ on the show because of his story, like myself, DJ has overcome addiction. We often just see and hear about the positive moments in people's lives and how they are successful. But, what we don't get to hear the tough moments, those moments that we often can relate to. Part of trusting the process is knowing when you have to make a change and being brave enough to take action to make a change. Remember this; at the end of the day, we all have problems and we all have inner demons. Stop comparing yourself to others, be you, be true, and surround yourself with like-minded positive people who have your back and will support you!

Suzanne starts the episode with a “local’s view” of Oprah Winfrey’s recent “yard sale” at The Santa Barbara Polo Club just down the road from the podcast recording studio.    After Bob dodges her questions about “what’s happening with your face?”, he describes returning to the studio where he was once a “gopher”, as a writer-producer of Paramount Television’s huge syndicated hit Star Trek: The Next Generation.   With never-before revealed details of his Rolls-Royce ride and 3-martini lunch with Gene Roddenberry, Bob recalls the rapid turnover of writers, producers, and  executives on ST:TNG, which became a hugely successful syndicated series hit in spite of the downward spiral of internal staff and studio politics.   Bob pulls no punches in describing his meetings with members of the show’s cast, to the point where Suzanne says “What a mess!” Caught in the middle of what he describes as “Shakespearean complexity” on the show, Bob reveals the secret of surviving on the staff of any hit television series.   He then describes his process for writing credible science fiction in pursuit of the Star Trek vision, and provides  the behind-the-scenes motivation for his script The Icarus Factor...in which he actually tried to kill off the captain of The Enterprise!
