Welcome to Living Well with MS, where we are thrilled to bring you our 150th episode! Donations make our podcasts possible – so we'd like to take the opportunity of this milestone to ask if you could support us. As we mark this significant milestone, we are pleased to welcome Overcoming MS CEO, Alex Holden as our guest. Alex joined Overcoming MS in March 2023 and, during her time at the Charity, has completed a lot! In this episode, she talks to Geoff about meeting the Overcoming MS community, her experience at the ECTRIMS conference (the world's largest research meeting in multiple sclerosis) and the exciting plans for the Overcoming MS charity! Watch this episode on YouTube here. Keep reading for the key episode takeaways. Topics and Timestamps: 01:17 Learn about Alex's background, expertise and how she became CEO of Overcoming MS. 03:30 Alex's view of the most compelling pillars of the Overcoming MS Program and changing your lifestyle based on evidence. 04:46 The mental and physical benefits of wild swimming. 05:56 Meeting the resilient and hopeful Overcoming MS community. 07:58 Abseil off the ArcelorMittal Orbit and other ways to support Overcoming MS. 10:22 How she keeps busy with her teenagers outside of work. 11:23 In-person Overcoming MS events taking place in 2024 you might like to attend. 14:15 Join the Live Well Hub – the Overcoming MS app – where over 2,000 community members are already sharing tips and advice. 17:43 Alex's experience at the largest MS research conference in the world, the 2023 ECTRIMS conference (European and American Committees for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis). 21:06 Future plans for the Overcoming MS charity. Selected Key Takeaways: Put respect for individuals at the forefront. 02:32 “Everybody needs respect, no matter what struggles they have, no matter what they've gone through. Understanding people's situations are so individual to them, I think that's shaped where I've gone with the rest of my career.” Your diet can contribute to your well-being and energy. 03:42 “I've always been very interested in nutrition. At one point I did consider training as a nutritional therapist. So that's something that I'm really passionate about the importance of diet and how that contributes to your wellbeing rather than taking things out of your diet, how you look at what's contributing to energy.” One of the main reasons Alex was drawn to Overcoming MS was because of the community 06:42 "It is such a strong community and a very giving community. People who have had really quite devastating news are managing to give each other so many levels of support, tips, positivity and hope. To be part of that community and amongst those people who have that mindset, I feel very fortunate. As an organisation, we're really small. We are absolutely dependent on people who are in our Circles, our Ambassadors, and people fundraising for us. There are only twelve staff members, and most of us are part-time; the only way we can support a global community is through the community themselves.” Want to learn more about living a full and happy life with multiple sclerosis? Word of the Day

Abseil is a verb that means to lower with a rope. Our word of the day comes from the German word abseilen (ob SILE en) which means ‘to descend by a rope.' Its English equivalent, Abseil, has retained the same meaning. The word is often used when describing coming down a mountain or a building. For example: When scaling Mount. Columbia became too much of a challenge, we had to abseil roughly halfway down. Sometimes descending on rope is the smartest thing to do.

For many, the onset of the coronavirus pandemic was terrifying. Descriptions of the outbreak in Europe and Asia led to panic buying and sheltering in place here at home. But, as time passed and people became acclimatized to life with masks and social distancing, many of those same people who were terrified at the outset began to let their guard down and take unnecessary risks. In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at a peculiar inconsistency around how we perceive risk and rare events.Jeff Elison is a professor and an avid rock climber. Jeff tells the story of a fateful climb on a beautiful sunny day just outside of Alamosa, Colorado. Jeff normally climbs with friends, but on this particular day, none of his regular partners were available. Early in his climbing career, Jeff might have balked at a solo climb, but as a veteran, he felt confident that he could manage the familiar climb safely. But then, he slipped and fell. …Jeff Elison is a professor of psychology at Adams State University. He is also the author of the book Vertical Mind: Psychological Approaches for Optimal Rock Climbing.Next, Ido Erev joins Katy to explain how we often overweight rare events when we make decisions based on a description and underweight rare events when we make decisions from experience. You’ll hear about his research identifying this phenomenon, as well as several personal anecdotes demonstrating how all of us fall prey to these miscalculations from time to time.Ido Erev is a psychologist, professor, and vice dean of the MBA program at the Technion–Israel Institute of Technology. Finally, Katy discusses strategies to mitigate the downsides of the description-experience gap in risky choice and ways to leverage the fact that we often underweight rare opportunities as well.Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab. There are so many opportunities for adventure travel in Oman. Rock climbing, abseiling, caving, canyoning, via ferrata, hiking, and off-road driving are just a few adventurous activities practiced in the sultanate. One man, who has been to all of the great places, is Justin Halls. Justin Halls is a Senior Instructor with Muscat Adventure Center, and basically he takes clients to wonderfully beautiful places in Oman that you can not access without special knowledge, training, or equipment. He's the man when it comes to adventure travel in Oman. In this episode of the Sultanate, I sit down with Justin to discuss the places that are currently open to adventure travel in Oman, including what we can expect from Oman in the future. We discuss canyoning in Wadi Tab and Snake Canyon; caving in the 7th Hole Cave and al Hoota Cave; abseiling off Jebal Shams; and climbing the Jebal Shams via ferrata. I finish the conversation by asking Justin to share with us his idea of the best way to see Oman, using his ten years of experience traveling around the sultanate. So, join Justin and I as we travel beyond the tourist route to see Oman's hidden beauty. Episode Glossary There are a few words used in this episode that not all listeners will understand, and that's okay, because I have a handy glossary right here: Abseil - (v) to descend a steep slope or vertical drop using a rope secured from above - sometimes called rappel in North America. Khareef - (n) the name of the wet monsoonal flow that affects the Dhofar region of Oman. Via ferrata - (n) a protected climbing route that often includes a cable secured to the rock every 1-10 meters and allows safe climbing without the use of a rope.

Special Episode #6: Kate Shindle may have come to our attention first as Miss America 1998, but she has clearly staked out a place of her own in the musical theatre world. She's appeared on Broadway in Jekyll and Hide, headlined as Sally Bowles in the Sam Mendes/Rob Marshall revival of Cabaret, and originated the role of Vivienne in Legally Blonde, the musical.Kate was always on my radar because a) she's a fellow Northwestern University alum, and b) she was a super cool Miss A., in that she was really talented and she had a great platform (AIDS awareness and education). So when I was asked to write a song for a benefit and I heard Kate was one of the singers I could write for, I snapped her up PDQ! It's great to finally work with her after years of rubbing elbows at Northwestern events and Julia Murney's annual Pancakes and Bacon Party. The benefit, called Broadway in South Africa, will take place on October 6th at Symphony Space. Ten songwriters (including Henry Krieger, Michael John LaChiusa and Bill Russell) were asked to write songs inspired by the essays and drawings of South African children. I took my inspiration from Khensoni Mabaso's sketch of Johannesburg, which features a very tall building with the word "Voda" on top. This piqued my curiousity, so off I went to research what turned out to be the Ponte City Tower, a 54-story cylindrically-shaped apartment building with a hollow core. ("Voda" is short for Vodacom, a cellular phone company that owns a huge LED wraparound sign on the top three stories of the building.)When Ponte was built in 1975, the surrounding neighborhoods were "whites only," but with the end of Apartheid, the area quickly filled with blacks and immigrants, and the white people fled to the suburbs. The building became notorious for criminal activity, suicide jumpers, and the garbage that built up inside the core. The building is currently being renovated and resold as high-style condos. Last October, before the sales office opened, the building co-sponsored an event with the city to offer people the opportunity to "Abseil off Ponte," i.e. rappel down the building on ropes like mountain climbers use.(Sorry to those who downloaded the original version of this episode with the audio issues. This new version is issue-free.)"The Core of Ponte" was recorded on 9/27/08.
