Selected as winner of the inaugural 96-Hour Opera Project Showcase in 2022, Forsyth County is Flooding (with the Joy of Lake Lanier) is the first new opera launched from the annual competition. Joining us on Perspectives are the creative genius' behind the story and the music - writer / director Adamma Ebo and her fiancé' Marcus Norris. Their one-act dark comedy explores some of Georgia's terrifying, uncomfortable, and uncanny happenings at Lake Lanier in Forsyth County, Georgia. In what might just be a modern-day ghost story: a private detective and a witch, who claims to be connected to spirits are hired to uncover a weird supernatural mystery happening—puddles. Everywhere … It premieres on June 15, 2024 at 8 PM. The performance will be at the Martin Luther King Performing Arts Center on the Morehouse College campus. The opera also reflects an environmental and spiritual retribution by unknown forces for the lake's creation. The opera is sung in English and includes explicit language.

Williams is Associate Professor of African American history at Monmouth University and Uhuru is Assistant Professor in the Department of African American Studies and an affiliate faculty member with the departments of Philosophy and Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Their research focuses on human value based on race, gender, sexuality, and ableism with publicans in the Journal of Hip Hop Studies, The APA Newsletter, Philosophy and the Black Experience, and Radical Philosophy Review. They are also known for teaching popular courses at Wayne State on Black Detroit and Politics and Culture in Anglophone Caribbean. In this episode, they discuss with Williams the satire Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul a recent film by Monkeypaw Productions and executive producer Jordan Peele directed by Adamma Ebo. It didn't help that he made a super weird and loud noise while making his assent think guttural moans while simultaneously slamming his hands down on the altar over and over. So weird! It was all too much and Moni had to retreat to the church basement quickly as not to lose it in the sanctuary in front of the entire congregation. This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to announce the next film to be reviewed, "Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul" directed by Adamma Ebo, and stars Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown. The film follows the aftermath of a huge scandal, in which Trinitie Childs, the first lady of a prominent Southern Baptist Mega Church, attempts to help her pastor-husband, Lee-Curtis Childs, rebuild their congregation. The random topic this week is all Jay-Z saying that being called a capitalist is equivalent to being called the N-word in his eyes.
Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul is a satirical dark comedy and mockumentary about Trinitie Childs, (Regina Hall) the “First Lady” of a Southern Baptist mega church and Lee-Curtis Childs, (Sterling K. Brown) her pastor husband. The pastor is accused of sexual misconduct and the two are struggling to relaunch their megachurch in the face of the controversy. As part of their public relations campaign, Trinitie and Lee-Curtis consent to a documentary crew following them. Adamma was the writer and director of the film, and her twin Adanne was one of the producers of the film. The sisters have been partners their entire life, and enjoy working together. They grew up southern Baptist in Georgia, immersed in the megachurch culture. Both Adamma and Adanne felt that any evangelical megachurch's messaging seemed insincere and un-Christian to get rich off of their congregants' donations. With that background, Adamma decided to write a satire about a black southern megachurch- a fresh subject that she'd never seen on screen before. Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul started out as a short film that Adamma was able to develop into a feature. Cinematographer Alan Gwizdowski (nicknamed Gwiz) took over the production when fellow DP Adam Bricker had a scheduling conflict. Adamma wanted the film to look and feel very much like a real documentary, mixed with a more cinematic, narrative film look. Gwiz knew they needed the two different worlds to be separated- the part of the documentary that the Childs want the “filmmakers” to see, vs. what the documentary filmmakers are able to capture behind the curtain. They decided to keep the more illicit documentary scenes handheld and the official documentary scenes had a more cinematic look. Inspired by the real-life fall from grace of megachurch pastor Eddie Long amid accusations of sexual misconduct, Honk for Jesus goes deep in its bag for a biting commentary on the parasitic relationship between megachurches and the Black community, deification of religious leaders, denial, rejection of the self, and trying to hold on to success at any costs. Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown) and First Lady, Trinitie (Regina Hall) are in dire need of some good press. They've lost their standing in the community. Amid public scandal, their congregation fled. Now former parishioners, Keon and Shakura Sumptor (played with by Conphidance and Nicole Beharie) reign supreme and they have no intentions of stepping aside. In the hopes of revitalizing their image as they plan a grand re-opening, the Lee-Curtis hires a documentarian. But what's intended to be a record of their celebratory return, swiftly takes a turn. Because that scandal upended the delicate balance of this couple's complicated marriage arrangement too. Unlike the majority of feature films taking aim at religious institutions, Ebo's dark satire presents (partially) as a mockumentary. It's a choice that allows the implied (scandal) narrative to work in tandem with an intimate fly-on-the-wall portrait of a partnership under stress. Offering this narrative up as “story within a story,” is a savvy way to lean into the messiness that is church communities, while keeping the story accessible to a wider audience. Read that back one more time, Honk For Jesus. Save Your Souls is a movie with a specific audience in mind, but everyone is welcome to partake. Just know Ebo's storyline relies on the kind of sly references, call and response mentality, and church-folk banter that are the hallmark of many a Southern Baptist household all specifically designed to work on multiple levels. If you let it, in between laughing at moments of sheer outrageousness, Honk For Jesus will greatly inform your understanding of Black culture, community, and its complicated relationship with religious hypocrisy and the gospel of prosperity. A subtly building tension between Lee-Curtis and Trinitie sets the stage for a nuanced take on partnership, love, marital sacrifice and betrayal. Hall and Brown have a kind of chemistry a relationship under pressure needs to sell such over the top characters like Lee-Curtis and Trinitie. Individually and collectively the pair set the tone and masterfully control the ebb and flow of the storyline that deliberately speaks around complicated issues. Juxtapose with the more composed - but no less engrossing - dynamic of rival pastors played with a mesmerizing poise by Conphidance and Nicole Beharie Honk for Jesus offers a not-so-quiet commentary on complexity of morality. Thankfully, Ebo deftly dovetails the more serious moments with the kind of insightful comedic edge that balances rather than breaks that tension. As this disgraced couple's relationship unravels, Trinitie unresolved pain comes into sharp focus,
Based on writer-director Adamma Ebo's 2018 short film of the same name, Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. follows Trinitie Childs (Regina Hall), the first lady of a prominent Southern Baptist Mega Church, as she attempts to help her pastor-husband, Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown), rebuild their congregation after a scandal. Adamma shares how a visit from writer-director Damien Chazelle and editor Tom Cross during her time at UCLA influenced her decision to film a short as a proof of concept for the feature: "...they talked about how they made Whiplash as a short as a proof of concept, because in actuality, the movie is a thriller about jazz musicians, and you're like, 'What does that mean?' It's easier to show than tell... I knew it was going to be a pretty tough elevator pitch, and so I was like, 'I need to make something to show for it.'" Adamma's sister, Adanne Ebo, serves as a producer on the film; when asked what advice she would give to aspiring writers from a producer's perspective, she said, "Read as many scripts as you can. I didn't go to film school… I learned how to write just by working with Adamma... even if you don't go to school for it, even if you don't go about it the institutional type of way, reading scripts will always make you a better writer."
