Season 3 of The Morning Show is now streaming on Apple TV+. With some of the most engaging actors working in television (Jennifer Anniston, Reese Witherspoon, Billy Crudup and Nicole Beharie), showrunner Charlotte Stoudt talks with us about some of the most shocking and groundbreaking scenes that are meant to blow your mind this season. This dramaturge-turned-showrunner, Stoudt's love of working with other writers is palpable. “The delight of sharing a story space with other writers is one of the great joys of this job. I never get tired of sitting across from a writer and having them say, ‘What if we did this?' It's like a Christmas present every day,” Stoudt says. Stoudt also gives her advice on what to include in a spec script, no matter what kind of writing job you're up for. “The best writing samples give some insight and truth about what it means to be alive. That can take any form – comedy, sci-fi – I don't think the genre matters if you're able to put something of your most primal self on the page. There has to be something that's alive inside of you, that hooks you and makes you go, ‘Who is this person telling this story?'” To hear more about the challenges and delights of running The Morning Show, take a listen to the podcast.

[NB: Due to file-corruption issues, this episode's sound isn't stellar; apologies for any inconvenience!] Critics were kindly disposed towards The Express, a well-meaning Ernie Davis bio-pic that seems to count on knee-jerk positive responses to 1) sports movies that 2) defy bigotry. It's done well, mostly, even though the dialogue really isn't how people speak to each other, mostly, and the traditional football-feelm structure wastes certain excellent actors while giving others more than they can handle -- so we're landing on "creditable, but not crucial." The Quaidosity is a more ambiguous prospect; after SDB regrettably uses the phrase "liminal space," we ponder the changing nature of the "qua" in "Quaid Qua Quaid," and DQ's transition from rakish pilot to avuncular coach/cop. Will Roy Williams-branded cliché containers, teratomae of movie rage, and the birth of a weird Brittany Murphy runner add up to a victory for our side? Happy Wine Wednesday! It's the holiday season and shows are on hiatus, so it's the perfect time to discover new faves and take the occasional trip down memory lane to revisit past shows. In the previous episode, Reverend Solomon Missouri and I discussed a new fave - The Bear. This week, I'm switching gears and revisiting a show that had so much potential and then completely alienated its audience in an astonishing fashion - Sleepy Hollow.I'm joined this week by Stacey and Tamara to unpack our very complicated relationship with this series. The discussion is broken out into two parts. In part 1, we discuss the Sleepy Hollow pilot and revisit the magic of Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie on screen. As always, the pilot discussion is spoiler free and limited to the events of the pilot only. In part 2 of the discussion, we talk about the series as a whole and pull no punches. We get into the terrible treatment of Abbie Mills as a character and Nicole Beharie as an actress. We discuss the writers biggest crimes against the audience and the many, many times the show completely wasted the potential of its talented cast. It was a long overdue, cathartic conversation about a show that went from being must see television to me blocking most of the writers' room on social media after their poor responses to valid criticisms from the fans. Check the chapter markers to see where part 2 of the discussion begins (roughly around the 1:16:00 mark).Friendly reminder: we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a good time! You can find all of the links to support Stacey here. This week on the pod John, Jeff & Dave discuss Breaking, the new film, based on a true story, starring John Boyega as a US Marine veteran who demands the VA pay him his disability checks, which have been held up by bureaucratic crap that the US military doesn't want to confront ever, ever. Therefore, Boyega's Brian Brown-Easley makes a bold decision to make his situation known at the risk of his own life. We discussed the incredibly important content of the film as compared to the final product, which was directed by relative new-comer to feature film directing, Abi Damaris Corbin, who co-wrote the script with Kwame Kwei-Armah. Boyega also co-exec produced, and the supporting cast is led by Michael K. Williams in one of his final performances. RIP! Composed by frequent Jordan Peele collaborator Michael Abels, the film was also co-produced by Euphoria's Sam Levinson. Director: Adamma Ebo Screenwriter: Adamma Ebo Starring: Regina Hall, Sterling K. Brown Runtime: 102 min Synopsis: As the proud first lady of a Southern Baptist megachurch, Trinitie Childs carries immense responsibility on her shoulders. Her church, Wander To Greater Paths, once served a congregation in the tens of thousands, but after a scandal involving her husband, Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs, forced the church to close temporarily, Trinitie is struggling to manage the aftermath. Now Trinitie and Lee-Curtis must rebuild their congregation and reconcile their faith by all means necessary to make the biggest comeback that commodified religion has ever seen. *Originally part of MTR's Sundance 2022 Coverage Snapshot Review: Written and directed by Adamma Ebo, Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul, pulls viewers through the side door of the church for a behind-the-scenes look at a ministry in crisis and a marriage at a crossroads. Inspired by the real-life fall from grace of megachurch pastor Eddie Long amid accusations of sexual misconduct, Honk for Jesus goes deep in its bag for a biting commentary on the parasitic relationship between megachurches and the Black community, deification of religious leaders, denial, rejection of the self, and trying to hold on to success at any costs. Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown) and First Lady, Trinitie (Regina Hall) are in dire need of some good press. They've lost their standing in the community. Amid public scandal, their congregation fled. Now former parishioners, Keon and Shakura Sumptor (played with by Conphidance and Nicole Beharie) reign supreme and they have no intentions of stepping aside. In the hopes of revitalizing their image as they plan a grand re-opening, the Lee-Curtis hires a documentarian. But what's intended to be a record of their celebratory return, swiftly takes a turn. Because that scandal upended the delicate balance of this couple's complicated marriage arrangement too. Unlike the majority of feature films taking aim at religious institutions, Ebo's dark satire presents (partially) as a mockumentary. It's a choice that allows the implied (scandal) narrative to work in tandem with an intimate fly-on-the-wall portrait of a partnership under stress. Offering this narrative up as “story within a story,” is a savvy way to lean into the messiness that is church communities, while keeping the story accessible to a wider audience. Read that back one more time, Honk For Jesus. Save Your Souls is a movie with a specific audience in mind, but everyone is welcome to partake. Just know Ebo's storyline relies on the kind of sly references, call and response mentality, and church-folk banter that are the hallmark of many a Southern Baptist household all specifically designed to work on multiple levels. If you let it, in between laughing at moments of sheer outrageousness, Honk For Jesus will greatly inform your understanding of Black culture, community, and its complicated relationship with religious hypocrisy and the gospel of prosperity. A subtly building tension between Lee-Curtis and Trinitie sets the stage for a nuanced take on partnership, love, marital sacrifice and betrayal. Hall and Brown have a kind of chemistry a relationship under pressure needs to sell such over the top characters like Lee-Curtis and Trinitie. Individually and collectively the pair set the tone and masterfully control the ebb and flow of the storyline that deliberately speaks around complicated issues. Juxtapose with the more composed - but no less engrossing - dynamic of rival pastors played with a mesmerizing poise by Conphidance and Nicole Beharie Honk for Jesus offers a not-so-quiet commentary on complexity of morality. Thankfully, Ebo deftly dovetails the more serious moments with the kind of insightful comedic edge that balances rather than breaks that tension. As this disgraced couple's relationship unravels, Trinitie unresolved pain comes into sharp focus,

"Breaking" premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received strong notices for the performances by the cast, John Bodega, Nicole Beharie, and the late Michael K. Williams. Director Abi Damaris Corbin and her co-writer, Kwame Kwei-Armah, sought to tell the tragic true story of former veteran Brian Brown-Easley and looked at many other tension-filled, single-location thrillers to capture the anxiety and drama of such a high-stake situation. Abi was kind enough to spend some time talking about what drew her to the story, working with the cast, her inspirations, and what she took away from the experience of making her first feature-length film. We hope you take a listen down below and check out the film, now playing in theaters from Bleecker Street. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Frederick Douglass was not only one of our greatest activists, he was a great writer, an artist who worked in words. Director Julie Marchesi (P.O.V., American Masters, African-American Lives) and producer Seun Babalola (NOVA, The United Shades of America, Africa Everywhere) explore the growth of his mind and the power of his words in their Emmy-nominated “Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches.” Each speech is performed by one of the film's all-star cast (Nicole Beharie, Colman Domingo, Jonathan Majors, Denzel Whitaker, Jeffrey Wright) and André Holland provides a narrative spine by reading from Douglas' autobiographies. Inspired by David Blight's magisterial biography, the film is light on didacticism but shot-through with the inspiration that can only come from one born under slavery and freed by his own actions and words. “Frederick Douglass: In Five Speeches” is now streaming on HBO.
