We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.

We had a great conversation with comedian Mike GlazerOriginally from St. Louis, MO, Mike Glazer is an entertainment juggernaut with extensive credits including appearances at the 2023 NHL Awards, HBO's Night of Too Many Stars (earning an Emmy nomination), Comedy Central, and Food Network's Worst Cooks In America. Glazer's live shows, which consistently sell out, have been praised as "the most promising show in LA" by Rolling Stone and hailed as an "instant classic" by High Times magazine, who also recognized him as one of the "Most Influential People in Cannabis" in 2021. Mike Glazer's portfolio extends to high-profile events like the Outside Lands Festival, SXSW, and the immensely popular BuzzFeed series, High Guys, with over 100 million views. His comedic genius has shone on truTV's Billy on the Street and even at the renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival. As if his impressive resume wasn't enough, Mike Glazer has shared a smoke session with the legendary Snoop Dogg, has cooked alongside Gordon Ramsay, attended culinary school, worked at Second City in Chicago, PA-ed for the Late Late Show upon arriving to LA, wore the Left Shark Super Bowl costume while being interviewed by John Mayer and clinched a gold medal as a roller hockey goalie with Team USA.Now, he's set to release his debut comedy special Life Rules! Mixtape Vol 1., alongside the release of his newest limited podcast series Life Rules! and a national tour to support (starting at SXSW's Sharpie event which he's hosting and making its way back to the Comedy Store in Los Angeles). With wild stories from all layers of his life (his grandfather worked for Al Capone!), Glazer is truly an enigma within the industry. His philanthropic passion is as strong as his devotion to comedy. Over the years he has raised money for the Missouri Wildlife Foundation, Best Friends Animal Society, the Downtown Women's Center in LA and helped coordinated a ‘letters to Santa' program with Second City Chicago which helped deliver the Christmas present requests of children less fortunate in the Chicago-area community. Most importantly, he is dedicated to normalizing the stigma behind mental health (especially in men), as he is a diagnosed Manic Bi-Polar and grew up with Schizophrenia in his immediate family. His additional hobbies include hockey, cooking, Al-Anon, sneakers, hip-hop, basketball, Eskrima (martial arts), bowling, weightlifting and hiking. He is currently Los Angeles-based.

Introduction: Minutes 0 to 7 We'll have episodes out for the next two weeks and will be off December 24th and 31st for the holiday. My dog has been doing great at the dog park. We've both been watching Wednesday and love it. Chandra's mom got covid but she's on the mend. Royals: Minutes 7:00 to 35 Will and Kate got booed at the Celtics game when they were shown on the Jumbotron. A Black reverend mentioned the legacy of colonialism and racism at one of their events, which the British tabloids saw as an attack on Will and Kate.  Before this tour we had so many lead-up stories hyping what a big deal it would be and how it was William's Super Bowl moment. We wonder why they made this comparison, which makes no sense. Chandra thinks it's because Harry went to the Super Bowl. We also heard that the Earthshot Awards would be better than the Ripple of Hope awards, which are honoring the Sussexes. The NY Times quoted a Boston University historian who said that the Waleses need to “maintain a sense of relevance” and “justify their existence.” Meghan did a speech in Indianapolis at a fundraising dinner for the Women's Fund of Central Indiana. It had a media blackout so all we got was a photo and some eyewitness accounts. She also helped serve Thanksgiving lunch for the Downtown Women's Center in LA and donated 500 purses to her British charity, Smart Works. We got a teaser for Harry and Meghan's Netflix docuseries. It looks amazing and we're glad it's just called Harry and Meghan. We got new photos of them in the trailer and some brief statements. It looks like it has the same energy as Harry's Apple series, The Me You Can't See. We remember some of the scary things that have happened to Meghan when she was in the UK. The biggest story this week is about an activist named Ngozi Fulani who was invited to a reception at Buckingham Palace held by Camilla. Fulani founded Sistah Space, which supports African and Caribbean heritage women affected by domestic violence. While at the event, Fulani was accosted by one of Camilla's aides named Lady Susan Hussey, who touched her hair, repeatedly asked her where she was from as if she didn't belong, and wouldn't accept her answer that she was a British national. Hussey resigned after this and Camilla's office issued a statement calling this “unacceptable and deeply regrettable” and claiming they reached out to Fulani, but that was not true. Fulani has said in interviews that we shouldn't vilify Hussey and that she's an elder, but that's not an excuse for racism. She also said the palace is taking the easy way out by letting Hussey resign. Fulani would be happy to hold diversity training for the palace. Hussey is Prince William's godmother and said to have been Queen Elizabeth's favorite lady-in-waiting. She's 83 years old and Charles personally asked her to stay on after the Queen passed. She's also quoted by Tom Bower in his Revenge book saying that the Sussexes would “end in tears.” The royal family knows who she is and gave her a platform. At least two other women were with Fulani when this happened. One was Mandu Reid, Leader of The British Women's Equality Party. She did an interview where she described what happened. Reid said that this shows how the royal family needs to acknowledge institutional racism and commit to changing the culture. I play a segment from her interview where she explained how this corroborates Harry and Meghan's account. On one hand it's funny to see the royals expose themselves yet again, but on the other we feel terribly for Fulani and others who have had to deal with this racism. We're excited for Harry and Meghan's docuseries and Harry's memoir. Comments of the Week: Minutes 35:00 to end My comment of the week is from SideEye on the post about Camilla's staffer being racist. Chandra talks about people questioning where she's from. Chandra's comment of the week is from ElleV on the post about the White House Christmas decorations. Thanks for listening bitches!

Hello Bundle Buddies listeners! We're back, and for our first episode of Season 2, we're joined by our new producer Matt Hadick for a free-ranging conversation about a whole bunch of video games we think you should check out this holiday season. It's a doozy of an episode -- and no, we don't cover any new bundle games, so we're not making any progress on that front.  Our cause this week is The Downtown Women's Center of Los Angeles. The Downtown Women's Center (DWC) envisions a Los Angeles with every woman housed and on a path to personal stability. Its mission is to end homelessness for women in greater Los Angeles through housing, wellness, employment, and advocacy. Check out https://downtownwomenscenter.org/ or @dwcweb on twitter to learn more and donate. As always, we've donated to them, if you donate and send proof to bundlebuddiespodcast@gmail.com we will shout you out on the show

Matt talks to Amy Turk, CEO of the Downtown Women's Center in Los Angeles, an organization whose mission is to end homelessness for women in greater Los Angeles through housing, wellness, employment, and advocacy. The pair discuss the importance of trauma informed care and the mindset shift from, “what's wrong with this person?” to, “what happened to this person?” They debate the merits of homeless shelters vs. permanent housing solutions, and celebrate the presence of the long overdue conversation about how systemic racism can lead to homelessness. We also learn that Amy considers researchers to be celebrities and both Matt and Amy warn listeners about the dangerous pitfalls of the “reply all” email.

It becomes clear that Dana should ask Jessica for advice the next time she finds herself in a laundry dilemma.  A perfect segue to Jessica ranting about socks and how her washing machine and husband continue to torment her.  Dana doesn't seem to mind people asking her for advice and then doing what they want because she admits she does that when she asks Dan Tipton for his opinion on a situation. Corrections Corner is very educational regarding the Canadian Parliamentary system of government as explained by a listener from Montreal. Weirdos of the Week are two identical twins who share everything, including their boyfriend.  Double the Pleasure, double the creepy. Rave #1 shows the power of asking for help within your community, when our friend Tracee requested people donate some housewares for someone who lost everything in a fire and within hours had an apartment full of new stuff.  Rave #2 is The Downtown Women's Center, named the 2020 California non profit of the year, providing a full scope of services for homeless women. By 2005, Mariah Carey had been through the wringer. Her debut film Glitter bombed at the box office and  the accompanying soundtrack  performed poorly, at least in comparison to Mariah's previous efforts. Her intended comeback album Charmbracelet received some praise but still failed to bring her back into the limelight. Mariah took a break from music for three years to focus on herself and came back with The Emancipation of Mimi. She worked with top producers in hip-hop like The Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri, and Kanye West, but still featured her signature ballads with that unmistakable whistle register. It was a much more personal album, but with enough jams to succeed in the clubs.Music writer Brittany Spanos sits down with us remotely to discuss the tough road that led to this album, the timelessness of some of the singles, and where Mariah belongs in the current music landscape. We are selling custom 45 adapters with the proceeds going to the Downtown Women’s Center. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Lisa Napoli has lived in Los Angeles since 2004, where there’s hardly been a dull moment. In over three decades as a journalist, she’s covered presidential campaigns, a hostage standoff, an outdoor hacker convention and the culture of technology, all at a wide variety of news outlets (some which no longer exist) including the New York Times, CyberTimes, MSNBC, and the public radio show Marketplace. For five years, she also covered arts and culture at KCRW. Her first book, Radio Shangri-La, is about the impact of media culture on the mysterious Kingdom of Bhutan, where she was invited to help start a radio station at the dawn of democratic rule. Her second book is titled Ray & Joan, about the late philanthropist Joan Kroc and her husband, the irascible founding chairman of the McDonald’s corporation. Lisa’s latest book, Up All Night, has just been released. She’s at work on a new one about another slice of American media history, the creation of NPR through the lens of the four “founding mothers” of the network. A graduate of Hampshire College, Lisa led an award-winning volunteer cooking group at the Downtown Women’s Center on Skid Row in Los Angeles for over five years. She’s also the founding board president of the Bhutan Media Service, an all-volunteer news outlet created by Bhutanese refugees in the diaspora. On today's episode we flip the script, beginning with a personal story from Pamela Marshall. She tells us how a health crisis lead to finding herself living on Skid Row. A moment of human connection with a worker at the Downtown Women's Center gave her the confidence and information she needed to begin on her road to recovery.  Having been on the receiving end of positive outreach, in turn, she helps a woman she meets at the shelter secure services and housing, and eventually becomes a Peer Advocate at Skid Row Housing Trust. Then, Keris Jän Myrick, Chief of Peer and Allied Health Professions at LA County's Department of Mental Health, joins us to discuss mental health, and challenge our assumptions about the nexus of work required to ameliorate our nation's homelessness crisis. We close with a live poetry reading by Suzette Shaw at the Housing Justice LA Summit earlier this year.

Why Not Both is an exploration of how our multiple passions shape our identity, hosted by musician and therapist Pam Shaffer. For our third season, we partnered up with Under The Radar to explore the lives of musicians, writers, actors, and creatives. We loved getting metaphysical with Ioanna Gika. From sharing how the nature of loss and grief informed her work to discussing the finer points of how to meow a violin line, Ioanna let us catch a glimpse of her particular form of sonic sorcery. Ultimately, it’s all about staying in the present moment to let the beauty of chaos reveal itself. Ioanna has a generous humanitarian side as well, sharing that all of the proceeds of Devendra Banhart’s cover of her track “Swan” go to the Downtown Women’s Shelter in Los Angeles. Ms. Faludi is determined both to demystify the father of her youth―‘a simultaneously inscrutable and volatile presence, a black box and a detonator’―and to re-examine the very notion and nature of identity.”―The New York Times In The Darkroom is Susan Faludi’s most personal book to date—an extraordinary inquiry into her family saga. When the feminist writer learned that her 76-year-old father—long estranged and living in Hungary—had undergone sex reassignment surgery, she felt compelled to confront a past she knew little about and a person she had long put aside. How was this new parent who identified as “a complete woman now” connected to the silent, explosive, and ultimately violent father she had known? What did this mean for her as a feminist and daughter? If who we are is most profoundly forged by who our parents are, what did her father’s metamorphosis say about her own identity?  Faludi chases that mystery into the recesses of her suburban childhood in Westchester County, New York, and her father’s many previous incarnations: American dad, Alpine mountaineer, swashbuckling adventurer in the Amazon outback, Jewish fugitive in Holocaust Budapest, commercial photographer who had built his career on the alteration of images.
