This week we're joined by Chalice and Dex, two ordained Ministers of Satan from the Satanic Temple! You've probably heard about the Satanic Temple's activism through things like erecting Baphomet statues in contrast to Christian statues in that area, or maybe through their "After School Satan" program meant to contrast the many Christian after school programs. We were fascinated by some of the things they are doing to fight for the separation of church and state, reproductive and sexual rights, and what it means to be a secular Satanist. Spoiler alert - cable news and youth pastors don't exactly have a good grasp on it. Chalice and Dex have been leaders in the Satanic Temple for years, and they are the best possible people to explain what their branch of Satanism is all about. To find out more about the Satanic Temple, you can visit their website: www.thesatanictemple.com! But first we welcome back our friend Blake, host of the Back In the Cool Day Podcast! Blake and his wife are both teachers in Texas, so the Uvalde school shooting is something that has weighed heavy on them both. In the introductory segment, Blake shares his thoughts on the gun violence epidemic that is plaguing the United States, we discuss the ideology behind gun ownership, and some potential ways to at least try to counteract these painful and tragic instances of domestic terrorism. If you're a fan of punk, emo, metal, hardcore, or just music as a whole, check out Blake's show, Back In the Cool Day. Follow them on Instagram (@backinthecooldaypodcast), and stream episodes wherever you listen to podcasts!

They finish with a discussion of a great concurrence in an infuriating case. On this episode, the Satanic Skeptic examines The Satanic Temple, a political activist group who also claim to be Satanists- but are they really? We'll be discussing some of their more well-known publicity stunts such as the Baphomet Statue and their After School Satan program, whether or not their strategy is actually effective, and finally, whether or not they are a religion at all and, if so, are they Satanic?
Contemporary Satanism. Part II of our Satan series moves from historical analysis of Satan in the Dead Sea Scrolls and so-called Lost Books of The Bible through Dante Alighieri to investigate Lucien Greaves and the political protest movement of the Satanic Temple with “After School Satan,” Satanic coloring books for children, and explores key differences from Anton Levey's Church of Satan, including study for the Satanic priesthood and everything you ever wanted to know about: Satanism today. Joe Wojie and Britnee Smith are joined by historians Ted Sisco and Adam Iessi, Ethics Professor Tim Collins, and special guest psychologist and horror writer Frank Jakoweicz. In 2013, when the state of Oklahoma erected a statue of the Ten Commandments on the grounds of the state capitol, a group calling themselves The Satanic Temple applied to erect a statue of Baphomet alongside the Judeo-Christian tablets. Since that time, The Satanic Temple has become a regular voice in national conversations about religious freedom, disestablishment, and government overreach. In addition to petitioning for Baphomet to appear alongside another monument of the Ten Commandments in Arkansas, the group has launched campaigns to include Satanic "nativity scenes" on government property in Florida, Michigan, and Indiana, offer Satanic prayers at a high school football game in Seattle, and create "After School Satan" programs in elementary schools that host Christian extracurricular programs. Since their 2012 founding, The Satanic Temple has established 19 chapters and now claims 100,000 supporters. Is this just a political group perpetuating a series of stunts? Or is it a sincere religious movement? Joseph Laycock's new book, Speak of the Devil: How The Satanic Temple is Changing the Way We Talk about Religion (Oxford University Press, 2020) is the first book-length study of The Satanic Temple. Laycock contends that the emergence of "political Satanism" marks a significant moment in American religious history that will have a lasting impact on how Americans frame debates about religious freedom. Though the group gained attention for its strategic deployment of outrage, it claims to have developed beyond politics into a genuine religious movement. Equal parts history and ethnography, Speak of the Devil is Laycock's attempt to take seriously The Satanic Temple's work to redefine religion, the nature of pluralism and religious tolerance, and what "religious freedom" means in America. Joseph Laycock is an associate professor of religious studies at Texas State University. He has written several books on new religious movements and American religious history, including one on role playing games and the satanic panic. He is also a co-editor for the journal Nova Religio. Carrie Lynn Evans is a PhD student at Université Laval in Quebec City.

In this episode, hosts Simone, Daniel, and Tabitha go back to childhood (or at least to last Saturday morning), and examine depictions of the devil in animation. Funny devils like Satan from South Park and scary demons like Chernabog from Fantasia make appearances as we discuss how potent these cartoons can be, and what it says about the way we teach children lessons about morality. Also in this episode we talk about After School Satan, and our experiences with expected religious participation. Chad and Amanda discuss more political topics to start but move on to the After School Satan club and Ken Ham's twitter rant. Amanda finishes with a couple of big articles about women atheists and an NPR interview from a while back about a female preacher and her congregation. https://www.salon.com/2016/11/17/sore-winner-syndrome-why-are-donald-trumps-supporters-still-so-angry-abraham-lincoln-understood/ http://www.thegailygrind.com/2016/11/15/trump-supreme-court-pick-william-pryor-thinks-gays-jailed-sex-homes/ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/why-donald-trumps-victory-terrifies-some-of-your-ethnic_us_582689f0e4b057e23e314370 http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2016/11/17/after-school-satan-club-holds-first-ever-meeting-but-not-without-protesters/ http://deadstate.org/guy-who-spent-100-million-building-replica-of-noahs-ark-thinks-were-wasting-money-on-scientific-research/ http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/09/village-atheists-history-nonbelief-united-states/499520/ Twitter: @SecularPodcast @TSPChad Email: TheSecularPerspective@gmail.com Facebook: facebook.com/thesecularperspective Tumblr: http://thesecularperspective.tumblr.com/ Episode Index Website: TheSecularPerspective.com Theme Music Provided By: http://www.jewelbeat.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPu9jawLiiCqWmnGNYC9ivA
You know what? We've had just about enough of all these politics! At least for one week. So this week we're doing a bit of a palette cleanser! No politics this week, we promise! First, some revelations about the benefits of floss. In Pop Culture Round Up: Suicide Squad news, Tyler Posey isn't gay and the Bachelorette finale! A new segment this week: Weird But True Corner! In the WBT Corner: burning manure, After School Satan, traffic straddling bus and age difference and how it effects couples! All that, plus the Wi-Five of the Week! Enjoy!
