Are vampires purely creatures of myth—or do they represent something deeper within culture, history, and human belief? In this fascinating episode, Joseph Laycock takes us into the world of vampires, not as supernatural beings lurking in the shadows, but as a subject of serious academic study. Drawing from his research into religion, folklore, and subcultures, Laycock explores how vampire legends have evolved over time and how they continue to influence modern society. From ancient myths to contemporary communities that identify with vampirism in symbolic or lifestyle terms, he examines what these beliefs reveal about identity, ritual, and the human imagination. This episode goes beyond the gothic stereotype, offering a nuanced look at how stories of vampires intersect with religion, psychology, and cultural expression. Why do these legends endure across centuries and continents? And what can they teach us about fear, transformation, and the boundaries between life and death? Join us for a thought-provoking and enlightening conversation that explores the vampire not just as a figure of legend—but as a powerful symbol embedded in human culture and consciousness.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.Please note that all XZBN radio and/or television shows are Copyright © REL-MAR McConnell Meda Company, Niagara, Ontario, Canada – www.rel-mar.com. Clare Laycock – You Make It Look Too Easy: Leaving Status Behind to Redefine Success

The Legendary Leaders Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 10, 2026 81:42

What if your career success was never meant to be about the next promotion—but how free you feel every single day when you show up?  In this powerful episode of Legendary Leaders, host Cathleen O'Sullivan sits down with Clare Laycock—former SVP at Warner Brothers Discovery who spent 30+ years leading major UK television brands—whose honest account of walking away will make you question what you're actually chasing.  Clare shares how she fell into TV by grabbing someone else's unwanted placement, why her boss told her "you make it look too easy" when she asked for promotion, and why in television if you're not failing you're not trying hard enough. With disarming candor, she explains why she ran an Epic Fails Day with her team every year, why losing status hit harder than expected when people stopped returning her emails, and why she spent months dreaming about work even though her shoulders felt physically lighter the moment she left.  Together, Cathleen and Clare explore what it means to protect your team while the pressure crushes you, why "soft skills" being dismissed made her want to scream, and the shock of having to rehearse what to say at events when "I used to be..." doesn't work anymore. This conversation is for anyone navigating change, stuck at a crossroads, or binge-watching The Sopranos while processing what just happened to their identity—because sometimes the bravest thing isn't climbing higher, it's finally admitting you're done pretending easy work means it doesn't matter.    Episode Timeline:   00:06:24 Falling into TV by grabbing an unwanted placement  00:10:04 If you're not failing, you're not trying hard enough  00:14:21 Selling creativity to the bottom line  00:18:48 Protecting your team through brutal restructures  00:25:15 Vulnerability without losing strength  00:29:35 What difficult leaders taught her  00:31:45 Make a decision and make it the right one  00:35:09 Epic Fails Day and undervalued soft skills  00:43:06 You make it look too easy  00:50:28 When a culture just isn't right for you  00:59:53 Her shoulders felt instantly lighter  01:05:02 Redefining success beyond title and salary  01:10:59 Losing status and binge-watching The Sopranos  01:14:29 Introducing yourself without a big title   Key Takeaway: Walking Away Isn't Failure—Staying Stuck Is: Just because you've spent 30 years building success doesn't mean you can't choose differently. Clare's shoulders felt physically lighter the moment she left, even through the shock. The real trap isn't leaving—it's staying somewhere that crushes you when you know you're ready for something else.  "You Make It Look Too Easy" Is a Leadership Compliment—Not a Reason to Deny Promotion: When your boss tells you this, it means you've mastered the hardest skill: making complex work feel simple. But organizations undervalue leadership as a "soft skill," so you have to learn to dial up your profile by just 5%—not to brag, but to be seen for what you're actually delivering.  Failure Isn't Something to Hide—It's How You Innovate: Clare ran Epic Fails Day every year with her team. In TV, most programs fail—so if you're not failing, you're not trying hard enough. Getting failure out in the open takes the fear away and feeds into your strategy for next year. It's liberating when you stop pretending everything's perfect.  Losing Status Hits Harder Than You Think—And That's Okay to Admit: When you leave, people stop returning your emails. You have to rehearse new words at industry events because "I used to be..." doesn't work anymore. Clare dreamed about work for months even after leaving. Processing the identity shift takes time—and pretending it doesn't is what keeps people trapped.     About Clare Laycock:   Clare Laycock is a leadership coach working with media professionals navigating transition, growth, and change. A former SVP and Head of Content Networks & Streaming UK at Warner Brothers Discovery, Clare spent over 30 years leading major UK television brands. She launched channels during the digital revolution, managed multi-million dollar content strategies, and built fiercely loyal teams through brutal restructures and industry upheaval. Clare brings hard-won experience in protecting creative teams while managing business pressures and leading through ambiguity. Since retraining as a coach, she works with leaders who are stuck, burned out, or ready for something different—helping them redefine success beyond titles and build careers that feel aligned instead of crushing.   Connect with Clare Laycock: Website: https://www.clarelaycock.com/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/clare-laycock-2200b821/  Email: clarelaycock5@gmail.com    Connect with Cathleen O'Sullivan:  Business: https://cathleenosullivan.com/  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cathleen-osullivan/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/legendary_leaders_cathleenos/  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@LegendaryLeaderswithCathleenOS   FOLLOW LEGENDARY LEADERS ON APPLE, SPOTIFY OR WHEREVER YOU LISTEN TO YOUR PODCASTS.

Laycock is an associate professor of religious studies at Texas State University. He holds a MTS from Harvard Divinity School and a PhD from Boston University and has written several books on new religious movements and American religious history. Much of his work explores how pop culture and religion collide, and The Exorcist Effect looks at the ongoing relationship between horror movies and Western religious culture, with a focus on the period from 1968 to the modern day. He joins Kelly and John to talk about how and why The Exorcist changed the Catholic (and broadly religious) imagination, and why so many moral panic stem from people who can't distinguish movies from real life. What happens when a work of fiction becomes a real grimoire? In this episode, we explore The Demons of the Necronomicon, H. P. Lovecraft's imagined pantheon of cosmic entities and their extraordinary transformation into living figures within modern occultism. Drawing on peer-reviewed research, we trace how Cthulhu, Yog-Sothoth, and Nyarlathotep escaped the pages of pulp horror to become objects of ritual, devotion, and philosophical speculation. From Kenneth Grant's Typhonian Thelema to chaos magic's postmodern experiments, this video unveils how fiction, faith, and imagination converge in the making of contemporary demonology.CONNECT & SUPPORT

However, Joseph Laycock and Eric Harrelson's new book, The Exorcist Effect, demonstrates that deliverance ministries have shaped their theoogy around the monstrous movies they condemn. This week's Local Legends episode is a very special conversation in which Martin gathers round the Three Ravens campfire with Tim Laycock, an inspirational, multi-talented person and a true champion for the county of Dorset.Author of books including Dorset Folk Tales, writing is just the tip of the iceberg with Tim, who came to the attentions of many in the British folk community through his work as part of Magic Lantern with the one and only Taffy Thomas. Music is absolutely key to Tim's life. He is a tremendous singer and multi-instrumentalist, and, like a crafty folk song magpie, he has been finding stories and songs, and story-songs, and bringing them out and into the light across his many years of performance. With a rich catalogue of wonderful recordings available as CDs and through streaming services, his talents stretch yet further, including into theatre, where he has worked with the likes of the National Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe, Festival Theatre Chichester, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and many others. He has written ten plays, too, some award-winning, and has had a long and successful career as a performer and director. Being a Dorset man, it's perhaps necessary that Thomas Hardy would feature in that mix, and Tim is also the Artistic Director of the New Thomas Hardy Players, while also performing Hardy's poetry and works as part of his work as a storyteller and entertainer. On top of which, he is an extremely friendly and knowledgeable chap, so, please settle in and get comfortable for one of the richest, most interesting conversations we've had for Local Legends so far. One that folds in everything from nativity plays with John Eliot Gardiner to the Dorset Oozer, the poetry of William Barnes to false teeth being lost off fishing boats. It's a great one, as is Tim himself. And to learn more about Tim and his work, do visit his website at https://timlaycock.co.uk/ Otherwise, we'll be back on Monday with our brand new episode all about the history and folklore of Northamptonshire! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Sure. This is definitely something I'm really passionate about and I love talking about. So I was happy to jump at this opportunity. Yeah. So my name is Dustin Laycock. I have been an accidental recruiter for going on 14 years now. I currently work for a company called Zillow. Zillow is really more of a more of a scale up and a startup. I mean, we've been around ten years, so I feel like we're kind of further along on that maturity curve, but we're still smaller. We're about 55 people today, and what we do is that we enable front line workers or desk workers through communication solutions such as Push-to-talk. So we're really big on helping out of all types of industries. We're not industry specific. One cool thing that we do do is we offer our platform for free to first responders. And in fact, last year I think we gave out something around $3.2 million worth of free licenses to first responders. So. Before this. Chuck Solomon Yeah. That's awesome though, that you're that you're doing that. I mean, anything that supports first responders is is really good in my book. According to the late Father Gabrielle Amorth, co-founder of the International Association of Exorcists, Hitler, Stalin, ISIS, Harry Potter and Yoga were all, in one way or another, touched by demonic influence, This does perhaps go some way towards explaining how he managed to rack up over 150,000 exorcisms throughout his long life. Of all of these cases, however, he admitted openly that only a small minority had been true, legitimate cases of demonic possession. Despite this, exorcism remains more popular today than in any other time in history, where it has existed as a long running ritual spanning centuries, continents and cultures. From personal demons to group possessions, humans battle with the Devil is a long, winding history of violence, perversion and projectile vomit. Gloria Laycock headed the Home Office Police Research Group and was founding Director of University College London's Jill Dando Institute of Security and Crime Science – the first such institute in the world. In this masterclass on the 50-year history of crime prevention, you will learn about how the UK got its first government Police Research Group, the foundation of the Jill Dando Institute for Crime Science, the successes and failures of working in a crime prevention policy world, the importance of tackling repeat victimization as a way to reduce crime, how Laycock and the Home Office shamed car manufacturers into improving vehicle security, the crime lessons from a wobbly bridge in London, and what crime prevention success story was objected to by a government minister because it was too many syllables.
