Authors Joseph Laycock and Eric Harrelson discuss with host Aaron Sagers their new book The Exorcist Effect: Horror, Religion, and Demonic Belief on the 50th anniversary of the iconic film that changed the horror genre, and impacted belief in demons and possession. On Dec. 26, 1973, The Exorcist — directed by William Friedkin, based on the book by William Peter Blatty — debuted in theaters. Released with low expectations, it became a box office hit, and radically changed the horror genre as serious and realistic. But it also led to a wave of reports of vomiting in theaters, people claiming they themselves were possessed by demons and it became a great recruitment tool for the Catholic Church, and career launch for Ed and Lorraine Warren. In the new book The Exorcist Effect: Horror, Religion, and Demonic Belief, authors Joseph Laycock and Eric Harrelson explore the ongoing relationship between horror movies and Western religious culture, with a focus on the period from 1968 to the modern day through the lens of The Exorcist — as well as Rosemary's Baby, and The Omen — widely believed to be based on a true story. The book outlines a cycle in which religious beliefs and practices become the basis of films — including 2013's The Conjuring — that in turn inspire religious beliefs, practices, and experiences in response. Drawing on psychology, sociology, and folklore studies, the authors theorize how film informs religious experience and shapes religious culture. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Podcast with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, with a weekly "Small Talk" mini-sode with reader submitted letters and spooky tales. The Satanic Temple has gathered a lot of media attention and Christian protest for various activities which provide an opportunity for Christians to reflect on the meaning of religious freedom, including that for religious minorities and those who make them feel uncomfortable. In this podcast I talk to Lucien Greaves, the co-founder and spokesperson for The Satanic Temple, about their After School Satan Clubs: what they are, how they relate to various Good News Clubs on school campuses, and how this relates to religious freedom and the public square. Vampires are not just the stuff of folklore and fiction. This book explores the modern world of vampirism in all its variety. Based upon extensive interviews with members of the Atlanta Vampire Alliance and others within vampire communities throughout the United States, "Vampires Today" looks at the many expressions of vampirism: lifestyle vampires, those who adopt a culture and a gothic ascetic associated with the vampires of art and legend; real vampires, those who believe they are a separate race and must actually consume blood and/or psychic energy in order to survive; or others who self-identify in some way as vampires. Over the years, but particularly in the past decade or so, vampirism has come under increased study, yet most scholarship has portrayed the vampire community at best as a cultural phenomenon and at worst as a religious cult. In this book, author Laycock explores the modern world of vampirism in all its variety. Having interviewed many vampires across the country, he argues that today's vampires are best understood as an identity group and that vampirism has caused a profound change in how individuals choose to define themselves. - http://people.bu.edu/jlay/cv.html *** AND NOW *** The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.com The ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewspaper.com Now listen to all our XZBN shows, with our compliments go to: https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv or www.xzoneuniverse.com *** AND NOW *** The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.com The ‘X' Zone TV Channel Radio Feed (Free - No Subscription Required) - https://www.spreaker.com/show/xztv-the-x-zone-tv-show-audio The ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewspaper.com (Free) To contact Rob McConnell - misterx@xzoneradiotv.com

The 1980s saw the peak of a moral panic over fantasy role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons. A coalition of moral entrepreneurs that included representatives from the Christian Right, the field of psychology, and law enforcement claimed that these games were not only psychologically dangerous but an occult religion masquerading as a game. Dangerous Games: What the Moral Panic over Role-Playing Games Says about Play, Religion, and Imagined Worlds (University of California Press, 2015) by Joseph Laycock, explores both the history and the sociological significance of this panic. Fantasy role-playing games do share several functions in common with religion. However, religion—as a socially constructed world of shared meaning—can also be compared to a fantasy role-playing game. In fact, the claims of the moral entrepreneurs, in which they presented themselves as heroes battling a dark conspiracy, often resembled the very games of imagination they condemned as evil. By attacking the imagination, they preserved the taken-for-granted status of their own socially constructed reality. Interpreted in this way, the panic over fantasy-role playing games yields new insights about how humans play and how they construct and maintain meaningful worlds together. In 2013, when the state of Oklahoma erected a statue of the Ten Commandments on the grounds of the state capitol, a group calling themselves The Satanic Temple applied to erect a statue of Baphomet alongside the Judeo-Christian tablets. Since that time, The Satanic Temple has become a regular voice in national conversations about religious freedom, disestablishment, and government overreach. In addition to petitioning for Baphomet to appear alongside another monument of the Ten Commandments in Arkansas, the group has launched campaigns to include Satanic "nativity scenes" on government property in Florida, Michigan, and Indiana, offer Satanic prayers at a high school football game in Seattle, and create "After School Satan" programs in elementary schools that host Christian extracurricular programs. Since their 2012 founding, The Satanic Temple has established 19 chapters and now claims 100,000 supporters. Is this just a political group perpetuating a series of stunts? Or is it a sincere religious movement? Joseph Laycock's new book, Speak of the Devil: How The Satanic Temple is Changing the Way We Talk about Religion (Oxford University Press, 2020) is the first book-length study of The Satanic Temple. Laycock contends that the emergence of "political Satanism" marks a significant moment in American religious history that will have a lasting impact on how Americans frame debates about religious freedom. Though the group gained attention for its strategic deployment of outrage, it claims to have developed beyond politics into a genuine religious movement. Equal parts history and ethnography, Speak of the Devil is Laycock's attempt to take seriously The Satanic Temple's work to redefine religion, the nature of pluralism and religious tolerance, and what "religious freedom" means in America. Joseph Laycock is an associate professor of religious studies at Texas State University. He has written several books on new religious movements and American religious history, including one on role playing games and the satanic panic. He is also a co-editor for the journal Nova Religio. Kicking of a multi-part series on Demons and Angels, here we explore the concept of exorcism in the Catholic and Evangelical frameworks.  We survey some early Church history and discover some of the attitudes and assumptions surrounding exorcism in those early centuries following Christ, and we conclude with the story of Anneliese Michel, which is loosely the basis of the movie The Exorcism of Emily Rose. Speak of the Devil is the first book-length study of The Satanic Temple. Joseph Laycock, a scholar of new religious movements, contends that the emergence of "political Satanism" marks a significant moment in American religious history that will have a lasting impact on how Americans frame debates about religious freedom. In understanding a tradition what is the relationship between the ‘center' and the ‘periphery'? How do the lived religious lives of practitioners contest or affirm authority? In The Seer of Bayside: Veronica Lueken and the Struggle to Define Catholicism (Oxford University Press, 2014), Joseph Laycock, assistant professor of religious studies at Texas State University, explores the implicit power of definitional boundaries through a study of a community that is simultaneously insider and outsider. The book is an introduction to Veronica Lueken, who had apparitions of the Virgin Mary, Jesus, and other Catholic saints, and a history of the movement that developed around her, the Baysiders. Laycock framed this unfolding history within the movement's evolving relationship with Church authorities. The narrative presents Lueken's early visions, the community of followers that rose up around here, and the continued conflict they received from the Church, their neighbors, and each other. The case is useful for understanding the creation of meaning through the contestation of tradition and questions of what gets to count as orthodox. In our conversation we discussed the Second Vatican Council, UFOs, technologies of power, the Pope, imagined communities, ethnography, New Religious Movements, abnormal Polaroid pictures, conspiracy theories, and the construction of sacred space.
