Dr. Ainsley Hawthorn, cultural historian, sensory scholar, and author, joins Lisa Dent to talk about America’s so-called ugly laws that existed from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century that banned people with visible disabilities and diseases from public spaces. More than half of 2SLGBTQIA+ and gender-diverse people in this province say their mental health is poor or very poor. Over 73 percent say they needed mental health care services but never got them. That's according to a research project by Quadrangle NL, funded by Women and Gender Equality Canada. The report considers all health care services in this province, and the results are anything but optimistic. Charlie Murphy is the executive director of Quadrangle NL. Ainsley Hawthorn is the project's research manager.
Would You Consider Writing Under a Pseudonym? For what reason would you want to pen something not under your own name? Is it so different from what you usually write that it needs that level of anonymity? Labrador Morning from CBC Radio Nfld. and Labrador (Highlights)
Craig Rumbolt, from Mary's Harbour, is being remembered as a man who loved his family, his job and his community. We listend back to a 2019 interview between Craig and Labrador Morning reporter John Gaudi during a tour of the Plant in Mary's Harbour. Prominent feminist activists will be reflecting on the past, present and future of feminism, leadership and power at a panel event today, hosted by Equal Voice NL. To learn more Labrador Morning spoke with panel moderator Leila Beaudoin. There's a program being offered called "Cancer Transitions" which deals with helping people navigate through life after overcoming Cancer. Paula Newhook, of the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre in St. John's, explained the programs details. Yesterday afternoon provincial and federal politicians signed a complex financial agreement regarding the Muskrat Falls Project. Included in the deal: NL Hydro will borrow one billion dollars from the Federal Government and Ottawa will invest an additional billion dollars in the province's portion of the Labrador-Island Link... but the the Innu Nation is continuing to state its disapproval. Premier Andrew Furey and Federal Minister of Labour Seamus O'Regan answered questions from reporters after the announcement. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday, Feb 14th, that the Federal Government would be invoking the Emergencies Act to help deal with current issues in Ottawa. We hear some of what he had to say, following that decision. Have you ever wanted to write a true and meaningful story about your, or someone else's, life experiences? Art Force NL is holding a writing course for youth. Ainsley Hawthorn described what the course entails. We are joined again by Heather Scoffield and she elaborated on the details surrounding the invoking of the Emergencies Act, plus other political progressions.

This episode Phoebe blew a hole in limbo and sucked away our audio with it! So after a catastrophic equipment failure, Andrew has pieced back together the episode into a shambling patchwork mockery of a man that shows up just in time to grab Dracula by the neck and impale him on a cross! Ainsley Hawthorn returns to help us figure out this magic spell thing. “Monster Mash” ©Reservoir 416 (BMI) Published By Reservoir Media Management, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Used By Permission.
Ainsley Hawthorn joins us once again for what may be, if not the best single minute in any movie ever done in the movies by minutes format, certainly the best of this particular film. Justin settles the eternal question of Horace vs Chunk, Horace settles the eternal question of Fishman vs shotgun, Ainsley gives Andrew the eternal gift of an opening to talk about Horatio Nelson. “Monster Mash” ©Reservoir 416 (BMI) Published By Reservoir Media Management, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Used By Permission.
Dracula attempts to use the Force to lift his X-Wing from the swamp in this minute, with Ainsley Hawthorn once again joining us for the topographically confusing introduction of the Gillman. “Monster Mash” ©Reservoir 416 (BMI) Published By Reservoir Media Management, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Used By Permission.
We visit the newly-vacated sarcophagus of Kantanka-Ra! Dr. Ainsley Hawthorn returns to explain to us some issues with an ancient Egyptian mummy being only 2,000 years old, and talk about what the Egyptian gods and Haitian voodoo have in common. We're breaking out the dictionary of Middle Egyptian for this one, folks. You aren't going to find a more in-depth analysis of this mummy. “Monster Mash” ©Reservoir 416 (BMI) Published By Reservoir Media Management, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Used By Permission.
Ainsley Hawthorn from No Time for Heroics (and also coincidentally a doctor of Near Eastern language and civilizations) joins us to talk us through this mummy business. “Monster Mash” ©Reservoir 416 (BMI) Published By Reservoir Media Management, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Used By Permission.
For our official Creepy Clown Watch 2016 episode, we welcome back Ainsley Hawthorn and invite her to become the Hermione of our podcast team (and argue over who's Ron enough to take the heat) just in time to throw her in at the deep end with a good old-fashioned Halloween hazing, forcing her to watch 1997's Spawn. How many sheiks does a party need for it to tip over into being an evil party? How tall is Martin Sheen? And why the heck isn't Michael Jai White starring in all the movies? Come back to the hey-day of Wizard Magazine, variant covers, and a plucky little upstart comic company that stood up for the noble idea that an artist could own and profit from their work, took that momentum and made Spawn with it.
After a year of offstage shout-outs, citations and cameos, Ainsley Hawthorn comes on the show to complete the Hawthorn collectors set, and also to talk about the 1985 animated spectacular Rainbow Brite and the Star Stealer! Does Rainbow Brite fit the definition of superhero? How is this movie a functional rebuke of Orwellian dystopia? Why can't anyone in Star Trek: The Next Generation figure out how to use a bed? And how many Akira tattoos does Anthony have secreted around his person? PLUS! We rate history's greatest horses in our new, short lived, quickly off the rails segment "Horses More Magnificent Than the Most Magnificent Horse in the Universe"! We're still workshopping the title. Get ready for a deluge of obscure references being described with even more obscure references as the team loses all touch with modern reality and dives into the pot-o-gold at the end of the Rainbow. YAY RAINBOW!!!
