MICHAEL JAI WHITE BIOA highly trained martial artist and actor, Michael Jai White has broken barriers as a Hollywood star and international box office sensation. With his dynamic personality, agile abilities and a physique of a bodybuilder, Michael has earned respect for his versatile talents both on and off screen.Born November 10th in Brooklyn, New York, it was after watching the movie Five Fingers of Death, Michael's interest in the martial arts began. At the tender age seven, Michael started taking weekly Japanese Jujitsu classes to stay focused while growing up on the tough streets of Brooklyn. By age eight, Michael's family relocated to Bridgeport, Connecticut where he studied the Shotokan and Kyokushin forms of karate and earned his first black belt by age 13. Upton graduating from Bridgeport's Central High School, Michael went on to further his education, first attending Southern Connecticut and then UConn. While winning multiple championships as a national martial arts competitor, Michael became a Special Education teacher at Wilbur Cross Elementary School in Bridgeport.Bitten by the acting bug in college, while teaching, Michael began auditioning for commercials and acting gigs on weekends and summer breaks. Michael landed the lead role of Tom Robinson in the first Off-Broadway adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird, starring opposite Tony Award Winner George Grizzard. Shortly after, Michael began landing jobs in commercials and guest starring roles on television shows and films; he eventually left teaching and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career full-time.Before long, Michael would go on to guest star on such hit television shows as Saved by the Bell, Martin, NYPT Bue, and CSI. Proving his acting ability, Michael would soon be cast for the lead role of legendary boxer Mike Tyson in the HBO biopic Tyson which solidified his legitimacy as a dramatic actor in Hollywood.Michael was then cast to play the title character in the movie Spawn which came with the distinction of being the first black superhero in a major motion picture. As white cemented his Hollywood status as a bonafide action star, more diverse roles emerged that allowed him to showcase his physical prowess as well as display his on-screen charisma and comedic ability in such films as Exit Wounds, Undisputed 2, Silver Hawk, Blood & Bone, Black Dynamite and Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married and Why Did I Get Married Too playing opposite Tasha Smith. The two would ignite such on-screen chemistry, they would go on to start together in the long running OWN Network series, For Better or Worse.Having proven himself as an actor, White would make his directorial debut with the action film Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown, in which he also starred. Based on the cult film Black Dynamite which White created and starred, he would go on to write and produce the hit animated television series bearing the same name. He would also win over audiences in a string of films, including Chain of Command, Chocolate City, Skin Trade, and Falcon Rising. He also guest stars in the recurring role of Ben Turner / Bronze Tiger on The CW hit series Arrow. He is currently directing and starring in Sony Pictures third install, Never Back Down 3: No Surrender, and will also reprise his role as Princeton in the upcoming Chocolate City 2.As a martial artist, in 2013 Michael achieved his 8th black belt from mentor and legendary undefeated kick-boxing champion, Bill "Superfood" Wallace and was honored by Black Belt Magazine as their 2014 Man of the Year. Continuing the legacy of such greats as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme, Michael is now the #1 martial arts action star in in America. This week on The Joe Rogan Experience Review, we break down Joe's latest conversations with Michael Jai White, Michael Malice, and Matt McCusker. White brings a disciplined, martial-arts worldview and a blunt argument about why challenge matters for young men. Malice turns the temperature up with politics, immigration, and institutional distrust, the kind of episode engineered for viral clips. McCusker is classic comedian chaos, funny on the surface, darker underneath, with the conversation drifting into modern paranoia and the Epstein gravity well. The Joe Rogan Experience Review is the show where we separate signal from noise, track the online reaction, and tell you what actually mattered so you don't have to wade through three hours of internet fog to find the point. If you've been listening for years and you like the mix of psychology, culture, and real-world consequences, this week was a clean snapshot of why Rogan still sets the agenda, even when the conversations go off-road. From emotional decisions to business reality: Why moving to Ghana requires logic over romance - and the brutal truth about relationship-based relocations, the 80% business mindset shift, informal economy advantages, and why the Year of Return became overwhelming when social media turned 100 expected arrivals into 3,000 unprepared diasporans kissing the ground at slave rivers while ignoring the practical questions of how to make money, raise children, and survive when emotion fades and bills arrive. In this raw episode of Konnected Minds, host Derrick Abaitey sits down with Ivy Prosper - former social media manager for Ghana's Year of Return secretariat and diaspora relocation expert - who dismantles the dangerous "just follow your heart to Africa" mentality keeping diasporans shocked when they land with spiritual connections but no business plan, when the Steve Harvey viral video snowballed into CNN and BBC coverage that nobody was prepared to handle, and when the historical trauma of the transatlantic slave trade creates such powerful emotional pulls that people ignore logical questions about income, healthcare, and whether they can actually build a life beyond the ancestral connection they feel at Assin Manso slave river. This isn't motivational pan-African talk from Instagram activists - it's a systematic breakdown of why Year of Return was designed for 100 people but got 3,000 because social media made it massive and overwhelming, why the team didn't realize how big it would become until celebrities like Steve Harvey, Boris Kodjoe, Rosario Dawson, and Michael Jai White started posting and suddenly ABC, ITV, and BBC Africa were covering Ghana like never before, why COVID killed the Beyond the Return momentum that was supposed to guide investment and relocation logistics. Critical revelations include: Why Year of Return became overwhelming: the team prepared for success but didn't realize it would be massive - like planning a party for 100 people and 3,000 show up, you're not ready for that scale The social media snowball effect: when Steve Harvey's Du Bois Center video went viral, people from abroad started asking "what is Steve Harvey doing in Ghana?" and suddenly everyone wanted to know what was happening Why celebrities accelerated the movement: Boris Kodjoe, Bozma St. John, Michael Jai White, Rosario Dawson posting from Ghana created traction that brought CNN, ABC, ITV, and BBC Africa coverage nobody expected The Beyond the Return follow-up plan: launched December 2019 to address investing, moving, and diaspora support in collaboration with the Diaspora Affairs Office - but COVID killed the momentum when airports closed Why communication about reality got lost in hope: when there's a lot of hope, you miss out on sharing the realities of what people should know - the positives overshadowed the practical negatives The historical diaspora versus African diaspora distinction: historical diaspora are descendants of the transatlantic slave trade with no direct lineage connection, African diaspora have birth or parental/grandparental ties to the continent - the experiences are completely different Why historical diaspora make more emotional decisions: centuries of disconnect create a feeling of not knowing where you're from and wanting to connect with home, wanting to be with your people and escape systemic racism The systemic racism escape fantasy: the pressures of living in systems built on racism are so painful that you want to go somewhere you feel like home, where people look like you and nobody says "I don't like you because you're black" because everyone else is black The spiritual connection reality: people kiss the ground when they land, feel ancestors' spirits at Door of No Return, Cape Coast dungeons, Elmina dungeons, and Assin Manso slave river where the last bath happened before people were shipped off The cameraman's spirit encounter: a Ghanaian cameraman filming diasporans at Assin Manso slave river felt like somebody was grabbing his leg in the water - he looked and nobody was there, he believes it was a spirit The relationship relocation trap: moving to Ghana based only on emotion is like staying with someone who treats you badly because you love them - you ignore the logical side that supersedes the emotional feeling Why 80% of people coming to Ghana think of business: they see the opportunity to start easier than somewhere else without as much red tape - the informal relationship-based system makes it possible to just start doing something The UK council shutdown example: a lady making food in her house with customers coming to buy got shut down by the council because of regulations - when you come back to Ghana, it's slightly easier because of the informalities Guest: Ivy Prosper - Former Social Media Manager, Year of Return Secretariat (Ghana Tourism Authority) Host: Derrick Abaitey

This week on BEHIND THE LENS, it's all about action thanks to director SHANE DAX TAYLOR and his new film, EXIT PROTOCOL, and director MICHAEL DOWSE and his latest film, TRAP HOUSE. First up, let's take a look at TRAP HOUSE and my exclusive interview with director MICHAEL DOWSE. TRAP HOUSE is set in El Paso, Texas, at the border where DEA Agent Ray Seale and his team infiltrate a drug trafficking operation run by notorious cartel boss 'Guzman'. But things go wrong, and one of his team is shot and killed. In the aftermath, the slain agent's son, Jesse, is devastated and struggles financially, having to move back to Spain with his mom. Ray's own son, Cody feels sorry for Jesse and bands together a group of other DEA kids to utilize their skills and access to resources to enact revenge, stealing money from trap houses operated by the Guzman family. Directed by Michael Dowse and written by Gary Scott Thompson and Tom O'Connor, TRAP HOUSE stars Dave Bautista and Bobby Cannavale as DEA agents Ray Seals and Andre Washburn, Jack Champion as Ray's son Cody, and Sophia Lillis, Whitney Peak, Zaire Adams, and Blu del Barrio as Cody's friends Deni, Sophia, Kyle, and Jesse. Plus, Inde Navarette and Kate del Castillo. Now let's keep the action going with director SHANE DAX TAYLOR and his new film, EXIT PROTOCOL. I love this film. I had so much fun watching the film with a terrific blend of action, emotion, humor, and performances from some of my favorite actors, ike Dolph Lundgren, Michael Jai White, Charlotte Kirk, and Scott Martin. And the story itself is great! A simple tale of assassins, aka hitmen. A notorious hitman, Sam Hayden, who made a career of killing other assassins, wants out. But walking away is not that easy. He's got one last job to do, and that is to take out his rival Charles Mangold. Unfortunately, Hayden gets double-crossed by his boss, who has hits out on Mangold AND Hayden. Now marked for death, Hayden unexpectedly finds himself partnering with Mangold to outrun his boss and the third hitman in the mix. Directed by Shane Dax Taylor and written by Chad Law, EXIT PROTOCOL stars Scott Martin, Dolph Lundgren, Charlotte Kirk, Lina Maya, Stephanie Beran, and Michael Jai White. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

It's nothing new to see a fighter make the transition from the ring to the cinema, with people as far back as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Chuck Norris pioneering the way before a procession of fighters followed. From Van Damme to Ronda Rousey to Michael Jai White to Gina Carano, the list goes on, but while some of the attempts at acting have not been quite as impressive as the actual fighting career itself, there is always one thing in common. The fight scenes in their movies are always much more realistic and believable.Naturally, someone who has fought professionally would have a better idea of the practicalities of fighting, and, let's face it, there are numerous movies out there that depict fighting with no degree of accuracy whatsoever. But just the mere presence of a trained fighter in an action movie should instil more confidence in the final product. At least, it does for me.Which is why the upcoming action extravaganza The Workout - which premieres on Amazon on October 28 - was ahead of the game before the cameras even started rolling, when Ashlee Evans-Smith was cast in the role of Tank. Evans-Smith has previously fought in the UFC's bantamweight and flyweight divisions, giving her added advantage and knowledge when it comes to effectively knowing how to injure an opponent. The Workout is an intense found-footage action thriller about an army ranger whose plans to launch a workout video empire are shattered when a mob attack leaves his pregnant wife dead. The film stars Peter Jae (Darkness of Man), Josh Kelly (S.W.A.T.), UFC fighter Ashlee Evans-Smith, and Augie Duke (Yellowjackets), with co-writer David Lawrence bringing a sharp narrative edge. Director James Cullen Bressack has directed over twenty feature films known for bold storytelling and explosive action, including collaborations with Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, and Steven Seagal, all of which sounds like a damn good start!HEAVY recently sat down with Ashlee Evans-Smith to talk through the worlds of filmmaking and martial arts. We start by asking Ashlee about her role in the movie."Oh, I love the storyline," she replied. "It's basically two army rangers - former army rangers - and they have a gym together. Unfortunately, somebody gets caught up in some bad stuff, and the pregnant wife gets killed. Then you basically go on a revenge journey with these badass former Army Rangers who are now doing crazy stunts. I'm also a former Army Ranger, so I'm basically who I am in real life - a big old tomboy without the military training - and I come in and want to help these guys seek revenge, and we spend the whole movie kicking butt and taking names."We ask Ashlee if making the transition from the UFC cage to acting is a difficult process."You think it's either going to transfer really easily or be scary for a stunt partner, but a fun fact is it's both," she laughed. "There are times where it feels seamless and effortless, and then there are times where… to pull a punch is so taboo in my sport. You step all the way into the punch; you don't pull it. And to train something like that for years and years, it's now a natural reaction to go full on. So that was a little scary, because I want to be safe and professional first and foremost. I don't want to hurt anyone, and I don't want to hurt myself, obviously."In the full interview, Ashlee discussed her transition from UFC fighter to actress in The Workout in greater detail. She described her character, Tank, a former Army Ranger seeking revenge after a tragic event, and expressed excitement about the project despite her nerves regarding audience reactions and mixed reviews. Ashlee reflected on the challenges of adapting her fighting techniques for film stunts, sharing a humorous incident where she accidentally landed real punches during a fight scene. She also emphasised the importance of collaboration with the stunt coordinator, who helps balance choreography with the actors' input, and noted the difference between real martial arts and cinematic portrayals.Ashlee described The Workout as a blend of action and patriotism, drawing comparisons to John Wick, and highlighted the authenticity of the fight scenes due to her martial arts background. Additionally, Ashlee shared her feelings on this, her debut major acting role, the differences with filming a 'found footage' movie, the importance of not paying too much attention to reviews and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Description: On this episode of The Nonsense Podcast, we're putting our survival instincts to the test! First up, which action star would you trust to save you from 50 bad guys? We've got picks like Taimak, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, and Michael Jai White—who's your hero? Then, FNBob poses a million-dollar (literally) question: Would you take TWO uppercuts from prime Mike Tyson for $20 million? Henvincible thinks speed is his only hope, while FNBob isn't convinced survival is even an option. This leads to a chaotic round of "Would You Rather"—Wrestling Edition, where we debate which iconic finishing moves we could actually endure. Then we dive into gaming! Henvincible shares his excitement for Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, while FNBob reveals he's finally taking the plunge into Magic: The Gathering for the first time. We wrap things up with a hot take—FNBob is officially taking a break from Kendrick Lamar after almost a year of his music being played everywhere nonstop. This episode is packed with off-the-wall debates, hilarious hypotheticals, and pure nonsense! Episode Highlights:

Manny Muskets is back in the store to talk about the most important piece of black cinema ever made, Black Dynamite. This film came out in 2009 and was a hilarious parody of 70s blaxploitation films. It stars Michael Jai White and has cameos from some of the funniest black comedic actors ever. Sit back and watch us talk about why this movie is so funny.
The Spin Chagrin, a concept that finds Frank having to watch a movie he's never seen before based on the random spin of a wheel filled with off-the-wall genres, continues into its third year; the twist this year is that all the categories are quotables from Frank himself. In this episode, Frank's category was "Postmodern Tech Bum Fight. For this, he reviewed two movies - the Michael Jai White 2009 movie Blood and Bone and the recent follow-up to the 1987 Street Trash, also titled Street Trash.
This week! Lots of movies! We can't figure out why Michael Jai White isn't in more movies (or how to pronounce his middle name correctly), Rebel Ridge is an action thriller with a hint of First Blood, and why did the sequel to Joker fall so flat? PARTY PLEASER: Systematic Geekology: Spotify / Instagram Will Rose of Systematic Geekology joins Melvin to summarize Spawn, a notoriously bad superhero movie from the 90s! From John Leguizamo imitating Jim Carrey's The Mask, to shockingly bad CGI, the two get into the not-so-good, the pretty dang bad, and the stupendously ugly. It's a trip! Topics:(PATREON EXCLUSIVE) 34-minutes discussing Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU as Dr. Doom, and playing a trivia game called "Boo or False?" where, after guessing true or false, Pastor Will Rose has to utilize the trivia fact as a sermon illustration. (PATREON EXCLUSIVE)Will Rose shares a brief history of how the Lord cultivated his enjoyment of comic books into a means for evangelism. Also, surfing! As is tradition with most Party Pleaser episodes, the movie begins with a lore-dump to make sure the audience knows what's going on.The filmmaking, aesthetic, and basically the whole package feels like a TV-production, not a Hollywood blockbuster. Will & Melvin talk about the shockingly bad CGI, something that precedes the film in a lot of online film spaces. The subtitles for the film were often adult in nature compared to the actual film, leading Melvin to believe the project was made "PG-13" during editing. Will finally realizes why he can't stand John Leguizamo's Clown; he's doing his version of Jim Carrey's The Mask. The final fight scene is incomprehensible. Good luck understanding what's happening.Recommendations:Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2022) (Graphic Novel)Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (2015) (Video Game)MAILBAG: Send questions with your first name and we'll answer them in future episodes!
