What are the business techniques leaders can learn from a Chess Master CEO and how should they be thinking about the future of AI? In this episode, Rich sits down with Alan Trefler, a chess master and the Founder and CEO of Pegaystems, the Enterprise Transformation Company that helps organizations Build for Change® with enterprise AI decisioning and workflow automation. Alan has earned multiple patents and overseen the expansion of Pega from start-up to a $1.3+ billion, global, public company with about 6,000 employees. In this episode, he discusses the lessons he has taken from chess into business, and how he thinks companies should be strategically thinking about AI. ---------Key Quotes:“The chess master will look and identify a set of candidates. They don't just stare at the position and magically figure out what to do. They say, ‘hey, here are three, four, five things that appear to be credible alternatives' and then very methodically dig through them to figure out which might be the best one or what the holes are.”“In the four decades of Pega's existence, we've done five complete technology shifts….And every single one of those encompass the risk of doing something that was materially different. And there's always risk when you're doing something the first time, or you're doing something that is hard. Ultimately I think evaluating those risks is key, but you also need to think about the risk of not making a change.”“If you think of AI as an accelerant, as a way to, for example, tell you something about your business that you should make better and then you have the chance with your team to weigh in and don't necessarily do what the AI is telling you, but use the AI as a stimulus. Boy, you can use the AI as it exists now, and it can profoundly change the way a business works.”Practice Makes Profit: Increasing productivity and efficiency by scoring and categorizing your interactions. League of Strategic Minds [listener question]: What are the keys to running a good strategy offsite meeting? Winsights: Ideas for Advantage: Jack Welch, former CEO of GE, said, “When the rate of change inside a company is slower than the rate of change outside, the end is in sight. Under Alan's leadership, Pegasystems has become a powerhouse serving some of the world's largest organisations by streamlining operations and improving customer experiences through AI-driven platforms. The ‘centralized brain' in the context of an Autonomous Enterprise refers to a centralized system or platform that serves as the core intelligence and decision-making hub for the organization. It draws inspiration from the human brain, which acts as the central command center for processing information, making decisions, and coordinating various functions. In the context of an Autonomous Enterprise, the centralized brain typically involves leveraging advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Data Analytics to collect, process, and analyze vast amounts of data from various sources. But what is the importance of a centralized decision-making system compared to a human being? In this podcast episode, Alan Trefler, Founder & CEO of Pegasystems, discusses the evolution of digital transformation and the vision for the future of enterprises with Pari Natarajan, CEO, Zinnov. Their conversation reflects on the progress made in digital infrastructure over the past decade, such as Cloud infrastructure, data layers, and advancements in technology. Alan goes on to talk about the need for a centralized brain in enterprise systems to replace the existing decentralized approach, which is scattered across various channels and systems. Alan and Pari also discuss how technologies such as Intelligent Automation are critical to build Autonomous Enterprises, where human involvement is centered around empathy rather than merely running processes. The episode also touches on the role of Pegasystems in serving both legacy enterprises and digital-native companies, emphasizing the significance of having a centralized brain for effective orchestration. Is a paradigm shift in enterprise systems towards a more intelligent, automated, and centralized approach the need of the hour to drive digital transformation? Find out more in this exciting episode.

PegaWorld, the annual event put on by Pega, a leading customer engagement and process automation platform provider, will be taking place virtually on May 4th. And earlier this week my CRM Playaz co-host Paul Greenberg and I had the opportunity to hold a LinkedIn Live conversation with company founder and CEO Alan Trefler to talk about the event a lot more leading up to the event. Actually, “a lot more” may be an understatement when it comes to speaking with Trefler as there are so many areas you can delve into with him. Not only is he still at the helm of the company he founded back in 1983, he’s having a lot of fun while also leading Pega to cross $1 billion in annual revenues for the first time last year. He credits a lot of Pega’s success to the lessons he learned working in the family’s restoration business – which will be celebrating its 100th year anniversary next year. He’s also a chess master and an accordion player. So Paul and I covered a lot of bases in our time with Alan, and below is an edited transcript of a portion of our conversation. While the focus in on improving the customer experience, few organizations have leveraged intelligent technologies to deliver on this mission. To discuss this research report and the implications of the findings, I am joined by Alan Trefler, Founder and CEO of Pega – the sponsor of the Digital Banking Report research. Alan not only provides his perspective on where the industry is from a technology perspective, but also discusses the challenges of embracing new business models, finding the right talent, changing internal cultures and creating customer engagement.

Trefler believes that although there was a time when you would hear ‘silicon valley’ and think of innovation, today when you think of it, most people would think of ‘entitlement’. They’ve been so successful they have begun to ‘read their own press clippings’ - which is a very dangerous thing. When asked to define leadership, Trefler says, leadership is defined by character and leadership by the ability to show a level of reliability. Ultimately, it involves people choosing to follow. We have moved past the era of coercion. The elements include being highly informed and knowledgeable - and being able to describe the sensibility. Technovation with Peter High (CIO, CTO, CDO, CXO Interviews)
307: In this interview, Alan Trefler, discusses World Class IT Principle Four, IT & Business Partnerships. Some of the topics discussed include: The evolution of business process management to digital process automation Pegasystem’s Model-Driven platform The value of “cloud choice” for customers Pegasystems’ customer- driven acquisition strategy The rational for Pegasystem’s decision to not pursue venture capital Alan’s book: Build for Change: Revolutionizing Customer Engagement through Continuous Digital Innovation How Alan’s passion for chess influenced his career path
In this week’s episode of SMACtalk, hosts Brian Fanzo and Daniel Newman had the opportunity to speak with Pega CEO, Alan Trefler. Known for his “Pull no punches” approach to business, Alan makes for the perfect “SMAC” guest because he’s going to take questions head on and leave the audience wanting more. At Pegaworld, we found out that Mr. Trefler isn’t only the CEO at Pega, he is also a chess master who can engage in 20 simultaneous chess matches while enjoying a beer and having a chat with his customer and partner community. Impressive Alan! In this show, we talked about a topic that Alan is uniquely passionate about, and that is the challenges of enterprise software. Knowing today’s importance on having tools that drive businesses forward, the Pega CEO believes that companies cannot risk investing and implementing software that is more hype than substance. We agree with this, but needed to make sure that this provocation from Alan wasn’t hype itself. This is where the interview came into play. During this episode, Alan provided insights on the following questions and a few bonus questions that you will have to tune into to learn more about: At PegaWorld, you mentioned the delusional behavior out there about software, specifically around cloud, AI, and bots. What is the industry getting wrong and how can it get back on the right track? How can organizations “get real” and cut through the hype when it comes to these technologies? You also discussed that many organizations aren’t getting it right when it comes to their end-to-end technology. How can organizations fully connect their organizations in a practical way? You have been quoted saying that software is being built “wrong” these days. What do you mean by that and what should companies be doing instead? A lot of the recommendations you are making have as much to do with culture as they do with technology. How do you build a great culture to succeed with digital transformation and the shifting customer landscape? What do you envision the future of software, apps, and CRM looking like? What will drive the biggest change to business (at Pega and beyond)? Throughout this episode of SMACtalk, Tom takes on the challenging questions that many of us are wondering about the role of the CMO in today’s enterprise as well as how that may change into the near future as Digital Transformation continues to shape industries. Following another successful #Pegaworld in Las Vegas, this show was a timely episode to learn more about the challenges and opportunities for software in your business and getting inside of the mind of CEO of one of the fastest growing software companies in the CRM and Customer Intelligence spac. According to Build for Change: Revolutionizing Customer Engagement through Continuous Digital Innovation, a recent book authored by Pega’s CEO and founder Alan Trefler, companies are not moving fast enough to keep up with behavioral changes customers are going through, which is causing what he calls an oncoming customerpocalypse. Trefler recently shared with me what exactly is the customerpocalypse and why he feels many companies will not survive it. He also discusses why he’s not worried about bots and machine learning technology putting executives out of business just yet.
