Democrats are rightfully panicked over their chances in the midterms and for lots of reasons. But Trump targeting the heart of their fundraising money-laundering service is cause for alarm. The backlash against ActBlue didn't come out of nowhere. In early 2025, a joint interim staff report from several House committees — including the House Judiciary Committee, the Committee on House Administration, and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform — laid out serious allegations. The report claimed ActBlue had made its fraud‑prevention standards “more lenient” not once, but twice in 2024 — even while internal documents acknowledged that both foreign and domestic fraudulent actors were exploiting the platform. PREVIEW — Chris Riegel — US Tariffs Devastate Chinese Manufacturing and Economic Stability. Riegel reports that American tariff policies have severely damaged Chinese manufacturing sectors, catalyzing emergence of dark factories with minimal human employment and declining utilization rates. Riegel documents that China's attempted export pivot toward Russia cannot compensate for lost Western markets, leaving China's economy unstable beneath catastrophic debt burden functioning as structural sword of Damocles. Riegel emphasizes that China's debt-constrained economic model prevents stimulus and infrastructure spending necessary to absorb factory closures and employment displacement from American trade restrictions. John Boyd, president and founder of the National Black Farmers Association, says President Donald Trump's tariffs have pushed up costs and cut off export markets for small and Black farmers. Boyd warns the damage goes beyond economics — calling it a civil rights crisis — and urges Americans to support Black farmers directly. The full version of today's special Friday Focus is available to all paying and non-paying subscribers. Rudyard and Janice devote today's entire show to one of the biggest news stories of the year that is not being covered by mainstream outlets: an upcoming change in the Google search engine that will have a devastating effect on everything from business profitability to how we consume news. Google's AI Overview provides AI-generated summaries instead of links to websites, which when tested in Britain resulted in a 50% drop in site traffic. 90% of Canadians use Google as their preferred search engine and smaller and medium sized businesses rely on Google to drive traffic to their websites. Even an optimistic 25% drop in web traffic to these businesses could mean the difference between being in, and out, of business. AI summaries are also going to transform the news industry, relying on one or two big media organizations for sources while shutting out independent and diverse voices. What role can the government play in mitigating the devastating effects this AI mode will have on our culture and economy? And what can businesses do to survive this AI avalanche that is just around the corner? To support the Friday Focus podcast consider becoming a donor to the Munk Debates for as little as $25 annually, or $.50 per episode. Canadian donors receive a charitable tax receipt. Friday Focus provides listeners with a focused, half-hour masterclass on the big issues, events and trends driving the news and current events. The show features Janice Gross Stein, the founding director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and bestselling author, in conversation with Rudyard Griffiths, Chair and moderator of the Munk Debates. This podcast is a project of the Munk Debates, a Canadian charitable organization dedicated to fostering civil and substantive public dialogue. More information at www.munkdebates.com.

On today's podcast: 1) More than 80 people die in flash floods across Texas as search and rescue efforts continue. A catastrophic flood in Kerrville, Texas, caused by torrential rains, has resulted in at least 82 deaths and many missing, including children, with the area remaining at risk of further inundation. Politicians are questioning whether federal, state, and local officials were adequately prepared, with some raising concerns about the accuracy of weather forecasts and potential staffing cuts at the National Weather Service. 2) President Trump shifts his economic focus from taxes to trade as his tariff deadline looms. The US is preparing to send tariff letters to dozens of countries in the coming days, with the Trump administration’s 90-day pause on higher duties set to expire on Wednesday. Trump said in a separate post that the letters would start being delivered from noon Monday, Washington time. 3) Tesla shares tumble after Elon Musk makes plans for a new political party. President Trump criticized Elon Musk's bid to start a new political party, calling it "ridiculous" and saying that third parties have never worked in the US. Musk announced the formation of a new "America Party" on Saturday, a day after Trump signed a tax-cut and spending bill into law that Musk had denounced.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The U.S. Senate is considering a spending plan that would eliminate incentives for clean energy. And some Pennsylvania companies say those cuts would devastate their businesses and raise energy costs. Meantime, U.S. Senator Dave McCormick says the future is bright for power production in Pennsylvania. He shared his vision for the state’s energy industry during a visit Monday to western PA. Republican lawmakers in Pennsylvania are applauding two Trump administration proposals to rollback rules that cut power plant emissions. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin says the goal is to, in his words, restore American energy dominance. Dozens of campuses in Pennsylvania plan to tap the Solar for Schools program to install solar panels using grant money. Some of the schools are counting on federal tax credits as well. But the budget House Republicans passed last month would make that harder. As the Trump administration ramps up efforts to deport undocumented immigrants, advocates in Pennsylvania are worried problems at the state's largest federal detention center will worsen. The Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association is releasing its latest analysis of the Susquehanna River. The nonprofit advocacy organization found high levels of E.coli bacteria at 20 public water access points. An executive order issued late last week clears the way for what's being termed as a "partnership" between Pittsburgh-based US Steel and Nippon Steel of Japan. And Pennsylvania's budget deadline is quickly approaching. Gov. Josh Shapiro and state lawmakers have until June 30th to agree on a new spending plan. Several questions remain about how to balance the Democratic Governor's spending priorities. Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mortgage rates are spiking—but the real danger isn't just the Fed. It's China. In this episode, we break down how the global selloff in U.S. Treasuries, triggered by President Trump's tariff policy, is rattling confidence in America's debt. But the bigger threat? China and other foreign nations are major holders of U.S. mortgage-backed securities—and they may start dumping them. If they do, it could send mortgage rates soaring and derail the spring housing market just as it's trying to recover. We unpack the financial fallout already in motion, and what it means for your wallet. Subscribe to the BiggerPockets Channel for the best real estate investing education online!
