This episode of AI Meets Life Sci emphasizes the prognostic and point-of-care decision-making power of AI in oncology while addressing real-world implementation issues from regulation and liability to clinician trust and adoption, through conversations with leaders at GE HealthCare and Catalyze Healthcare. In the first segment, Ben Newton, General Manager of Oncology at GE HealthCare describes likely future advances in multimodal computing, which could parse diverse datasets from pathology, imaging, genomics and other domains to predict likely outcomes in given treatment scenarios. Newton also emphasized AI's ability to help overwhelmed physicians by alleviating workflow bottlenecks and assisting with point-of-care decision making. Despite the promise, he underscored that such advances rely on incorporating clinicians' valuable perspective when developing these AI systems and partnerships with other industry stakeholders, such as cloud partners like AWS and academic centers or hospitals, to access data and create foundation models. In the second segment, Haley Schwartz, CEO at Catalyze Healthcare, highlights the potential of using AI for screening applications as an initial stepping stone to build trust and adoption. She also notes that potential headwinds for hospital adoption of AI are questions related to legal liability and reimbursement impacts. In addition, Schwartz emphasizes the importance of physician involvement, especially during the early stages of AI integration into healthcare. Our guest today, Erica Komisar certainly thinks so. She believes that mothers in particular should spend significant time being present with their children in the first three years of life - quitting their jobs if necessary. To say that this topic is complex is an understatement, and it may lead to strong feelings on both sides of the conversation. As we value the opportunity to engage with experts who share differing perspectives, next week we'll be bringing you an episode with Vivvi daycare founder Ben Newton who will present an alternate view, so be sure to listen to both episodes back-to-back for the full story.More on Erica Komisar: ERICA KOMISAR,  is a clinical social worker, psychoanalyst, and parent guidance expert who has been in private practice in New York City for over 30 years.  A graduate of Georgetown and Columbia Universities and The New York Freudian Society, Ms. Komisar is a psychological consultant bringing parenting workshops to clinics, schools, corporations, and childcare settings.  Erica is the author of Being There: Why Prioritizing Motherhood in the First Three Years Matters and Chicken Little the Sky Isn't Falling: Raising Resilient Adolescents in the New Age of Anxiety.Resources:nosillyquestionspodcast.comhttps://www.instagram.com/nosillyquestionspodcast/

There are three types of people in the data world: mathematicians, scientists, and engineers. Mathematicians are interested in understanding things that are true or false. Scientists are interested in furthering knowledge and enjoy answering challenging questions. Engineers are interested in building things that are useful, so they can solve a problem that's important. Engineers in the software industry are currently searching for ways to resolve the issues associated with microservices. Right now, the software industry is facing a massive architectural transformation, and engineers have the opportunity to create systems that solve important problems. That's why Ben Sigelman — CEO and co-founder, started Lightstep, to create something useful and impactful. He saw an opportunity to accelerate the industry's transformation while improving the developer and end-user experience, and he took it. Using observability, he built something that could help people gain more confidence and understanding of their own system. As an ex-Googler and co-creator of Dapper, Ben Sigelman witnessed the birth of microservices at Google. He learned a great deal from his experiences, and Lightstep is in many ways a reaction to and a generational improvement beyond those approaches. Sigelman's fascination lies in deep systems and how they break, but he is also passionate about separating the telemetry from the rest of observability. There is a lot of noise in the marketplace and confusion about how to approach observability, but Sigelman is confident that in the next 5-10 years, applications could change the way the software actually works, not just the way we understand it. Listen to Ben Sigelman and Ben Newton discuss the future of observability, and learn more about how this transformation could impact the industry. This week's episode is the second installment of a special three-part series on observability in data. Tune in each week to hear about how the world of observability in transforming into a major player in the data realm.

Must science and religion conflict?  In our final conversation with Ben Spackman, he will compare two events that require a lot of faith to believe:  Noah's Flood and the resurrection of Jesus.  What can we learn from science and religion on these two stories? https://youtu.be/LQMBupeA4WE Ben:  When it comes to the flood, what kind of evidence would a global flood that covered all the mountains to, I don't remember 30 cubits deep, so we're talking 30 cubits over the top of the Himalayas for at least 40 days. What kind of evidence should that leave in the historical record? Absolute masses of evidence everywhere should be in the historical record across dozens of disciplines and it's simply not there. That again, is one area where I say, well, what does contextual reading actually get us with the flood? What is the flood actually trying to teach? Is it a historical event and that's the important thing? Or is it doing something different? And like Genesis, I think it's doing something quite different, but that's another book. So what can science tell us about scripture? Some things, not everything, and it depends on the question. Generalizing is dangerous and being simplistic is dangerous because things are rarely simplistic, which is a generalization. We also talk about some of our most favorite scientists, and their relationship to religion. Ben:  Newton comes up with calculus and the laws of motion and all this stuff. What you're not told is that Newton was doing this as a way to study God. What you're not told is that Newton, who was somewhat unorthodox was still deeply religious and of the roughly 5 million words of his that we have preserved, 60-70 percent of that is interpreting the Bible, writing about the Tabernacle, trying to figure out the Old Testament timeline. These people who we think we're doing science, not religion, they thought they were doing religion. So we have to be careful as we look back in time at these people, at religion and science in the past. [If you] think about Galileo's story as theology crushing science, it doesn't matter who you read, they'll tell you it's a lot more complicated than that. Galileo, for example, was not a very subtle guy. He was friends with the pope and he put the pope's argument in the mouth of one of his characters named Idiot. That's not going to go over very well. Check out our conversation… Is Noah's flood about science, or faith? Don't forget to check out our previous conversations with Ben! 248: Did Pres.
