Carolina Allen discusses motherhood with Erica Komisar, LCSW and Madeline Wallin from FEFAF and Haro    “Free women. Free women from feeling terrorized and imprisoned by the narrative that unless they are a hard driving career woman, making lots of money competing with men out in the world, that they have no value. Free women, and give them permission to embrace instincts that they feel, but society doesn't give them permission to feel.” - Erica Komisar   “How can we talk about the future of the world if we can't talk about, and especially in a forum that's supposed to be for women, [if] we are not using the word ‘mother' or ‘family' and we're talking about the future?” - Carolina Allen   “We need to use the words more. We need to show motherhood. We need to talk about it so much more and use the correct words. … Nobody exists without the mother!” - Madeline Wallin   https://bigoceanwomen.org/our-work/subscribe/ A graduate of Georgetown and Columbia Universities and The New York Freudian Society, Erica is a psychological consultant bringing parenting and work/life workshops to clinics, schools, corporations, and childcare settings, including The Garden House School, Goldman Sachs, Shearman, and Sterling and SWFS Early Childhood Center.    Erica Komisar is a clinical social worker, psychoanalyst, parent coach, and author. Timmerie addresses a show that you might want to steer clear of: Netflix’s new series Adolescence, which explores the crisis of boys today. It’s based on a story of a 13-year-old boy, Jamie, who murders a classmate after being rejected. Yes, that’s the plot, and the show tries to explore why he did it: including his deep hurt from bullying, the isolation of modern boys, and impurity. Some of the content, while important to talk about, may not be appropriate for sensitive ears. Timmerie’s big takeaway is that this show is part of the problem, not the solution. We’ve become so desensitized to disturbing content that we keep craving something more shocking. But what’s really chilling is that the show nails one thing: Boys are very much hurting. Badly. And the culture is not making it any better. The Crisis of Boys: Jamie’s character reveals a lot about the struggles young boys face today: isolation, lack of real relationships, confusion over identity, and being glued to screens. Pornography comes up in the third episode, and it’s clear it has wrecked his ability to form healthy relationships or even see himself properly. What’s Making This Worse: -The "Incel" culture: radicalized online communities of isolated men. -A society where boys are constantly told they’re “toxic” just for being themselves. -A school system that’s not built for them (sit still, be quiet, don’t move... yeah, no). -Being over-medicated and told their natural energy is a “problem.” What Parents Can Do (According to Timmerie): -Tech Lockdown: Cut down on screen time. Seriously. Let kids be bored, climb trees, get dirty, and create stories with their imagination. -Real Interaction: Kids need real FaceTime: like playing outside, talking with adults, hanging out with friends... not just scrolling through TikTok. -Empathy and Faith: The number one thing that keeps kids away from porn is developing empathy. Guess what builds empathy? Faith and good moral values. -More Time with Parents: Kids can't just get the leftover part of your time. They need the real deal, every single day. And yes, that’s exhausting, but it matters. -Parent Watchfulness: You have to be there to notice the little things. A lot of the damage happens when kids are left alone with screens. Timmerie raves about the work of Erica Komisar: particularly her books about raising resilient children by being there for them. No shortcuts. No outsourcing. Just being present. The Faith Angle: Timmerie explains why sending your children to Catholic school and going to Mass on Sundays is just the bare minimum. It’s about living the faith daily, praying with your kids, and building a strong foundation of grace and virtue. The popularity of this Netflix show is just another warning sign. We’re addicted to the messed-up stuff because we’ve let it seep into our culture. The solution? Get your kids off screens, outside, and surrounded by loving, intentional parenting.

Do you strongly feel that staying home would be best for your child? Listen in to find out why your hunch is correct and critical. Click here for the show notes and extra resources. We know in our mama's heart that staying home with our children is important because they need us to. Today, my guest confirmed this instinct we have as mothers and why it is critical to do so. What We Talked About: Understanding why the first three years are critical for our child's long-term mental health Why are daycare centers not equipped to support our children's attachment needs What is “consistency of care,” and why is it essential in the early years? What are other critical stages for our children's mental health? The important revolution that needs to happen for the health of families Things to Remember “There is no parenting without presence.” “Without guilt, our conscience isn't working.” “The foundation of resilience is that feeling of security in the first three years.” “Mothers are very attuned to babies' distress.” “If you are present for your children in the first three years, you're encouraging a tremendous amount of neural connections to be formed.” “Your babies are not resilient; your babies are incredibly vulnerable, and they need you.” -Erica Komisar “There are many who hold, as I do, that the most important period of life is not the age of university studies, but the first one, the period from birth to the age of six. For that is the time when man's intelligence itself, his greatest implement, is being formed. But not only his intelligence; the full totality of his psychic powers.” - Dr. Maria Montessori   Click here for the show notes and extra resources.

Erica Komisar is speaking truth backed by physical and social science. Turns out, infants need their mothers. Infants detached from their mothers have an increase in cortisol, the stress hormone. This can cause increases in anxiety and depression later in life. Is this one of the causes of the spike in mental illness? "We're in the Upside Down." We treat very young children as if they are much older and capable than they are. We treat older children as if they are not capable and don't allow them any freedom or free play time . . . We need to reverse this." Boys are feminized in our schools. We treat their energy as bad behavior and don't allow more physical activities to release it. Schools are built today for girls. Boys have high surges in testosterone between the ages of 3-6 years old, and we often treat this with medication. Website- www.cwicmedia.com

When Erica Komisar, a venerated psychoanalyst, joined me for a heart-to-heart, we peeled back the layers of motherhood's unspoken complexities and its intersection with professional life. We navigated through the cultural currents that often undervalue the art of nurturing, while also examining how the professional world beckons women with the allure of success outside the home. This conversation isn't just about the choices we make; it's a deeper look into the societal narratives that shape these decisions and the profound impact of maternal presence on the emotional and psychological development of our children.Being a mother who transitioned from government service to homeschooling, I've lived the tug-of-war between career ambitions and the yearning to be an anchor in my children's life. This episode is a canvas of my reflections, shared struggles, and the wisdom Erica brings on how societal changes influence our parenting skills, including the often-overlooked need for recognizing and respecting the emotions tied to our sense of loss and gain in this journey. We ponder the significance of being fully present, the enchantment of early childhood development, and the imperative to guard our young ones from the potential pitfalls of technology. With the world polarized on how to balance career and family, our dialogue aspires to foster respect for the myriad choices parents face, advocating for an integrated approach that honors different paths to shaping our children's futures. Evolutionary psychologist, Doug Lisle, PhD  discusses the following listener questions with host, Nathan Gershfeld: 1.  I'm trying to decide whether to go back to work a year after my second child, or to stay home with her till preschool. I have heard you say on your podcast 'it doesn't matter who raises your kids' which I understand to be a reference to twin studies that show that parents have very little influence on how their children turn out (outcomes are about 80% genetic). How do you square this with attachment theory, and psychologists who say that children need one primary caregiver for the first three years or they will be beset with anxiety and depression in their teen years. I am thinking of the book 'being there' by Erica Komisar in which she advocates very strongly for being a stay at home mother for the mental health of your children. I would like to have a third child, but being out of the workplace for 6 years would dent our finances and possibly my self esteem. 2. Dear doctors, I grew up in a Christian home but stopped going to church once I left home. All of my immediate family are still very religious and my parents financially support someone who was my best friend in high school, who has become a missionary. I find that dynamic very unfair and recently told both parties that I feel boundaries have been crossed. My friend asked my parents to stop supporting her but they refused. I feel betrayed by my parents. How do you advise I deal with the relationship moving forward? I've already ended my friendship but wish I could be emotionally closer to my parents.   Watch this episode on Youtube!   @BeatYourGenes   Host: Nathan Gershfeld                               Interviewee: Doug Lisle, Ph.D.  Podcast website:  http://www.BeatYourGenes.org True to Life seminars with Dr. Lisle and Dr. Howk : http://www.TrueToLife.us   Intro & outro song: City of Happy Ones · Ferenc Hegedus.
