She's the one who compared daycare to an orphanage (sort of) and said that when you let you babies 'cry it out' or are gone for prolonged periods of time, they assume you've died (kinda). That's how it may seem in short online clips, but the truth of what she has to say regarding neurology and attachment theory is far more complex. This week, Katherine's Telling Everybody Everything about brilliant psychoanalyst, author, and parent guidance expert, Erica Komisar as she joins us at Acast studios in London to discuss her newest book, The Child-Friendly Divorce. A sometimes controversial figure, The Left often rejects Ms Komisar's work because they see it as a retrogressive guilt-trip to push women out of the workforce. The Right embraces it to enforce traditional gender roles. Is anyone actually listening to the nuance of what she's saying regarding motherhood, criticism of how Western Capitalism pushes families to their limits and the toll it's taking on children and their mental health? Lots of people are actually, and Erica Komisar was recently featured on THE ACTUAL Kardashians! Whether you're about to be a parent, you're in the midst of parenting, or you didn't have the tools or information to parent the way you would if you could do it all again and you'd like to strengthen your parent-child bond now, it's never too late for repair. If you're going through a divorce, are thinking of leaving, or are single and wanting some RED FLAG case studies on why you should be super careful, Erica Komisar's The Child-Friendly Divorce is for you. www.komisar.com@EricaKomisar Hosted on Acast. I have spent decades helping patients heal through diet, exercise, and natural remedies, but there is one injury that supplements can't fix: emotional trauma. Whether it's "Big T" trauma or the "Little t" trauma of chronic neglect, these emotional scars manifest as autoimmune disease, cancer, and hormone imbalances later in life. In this episode, psychoanalyst Erica Komisar joins me to explain why the first three years of life are the "critical period" for physical health and how we can heal the mind-body connection. We explore the mechanics of the HPA Axis, focusing on the Amygdala (the stress "on" switch) and the Hippocampus (the "off" switch). Erica explains how early childhood stress can "burn out" the brain's ability to regulate cortisol, leading to a permanent state of survival mode. We also discuss the definition of Depression (preoccupation with past loss) versus Anxiety (preoccupation with future loss) and how both act as pathogens on the human immune system. Our culture tells parents that “you can do it all” – but that's “a very dangerous narrative” and “a narcissistic trope,” says social worker and parenting coach Erica Komisar. Is it time for our culture to grapple with a hard truth: life requires setting priorities and making trade-offs between items like career and family, rather than trying to have it all at once?Modern societies invest a great deal of resources into children. But often it comes in the form of trends like helicopter parenting, bulldozer parenting, or intensive parenting. Are these short bursts of anxious, structured engagement what children really need? Or do we use these to paper over the gaps our modern culture has left in traditional family and social structures? Our economies and social norms prize autonomy, flexibility, and paid work. Meanwhile, many parents feel more stretched and isolated than ever, and the social networks they inhabit feel thin.To discuss these challenges, Komisar joins Inside Policy Talks. Komisar is a clinical social worker trained in psychology, and an author whose work argues that the first years of childhood are foundational for attachment, mental health, and later resilience. On the podcast, she tells Peter Copeland, deputy director of domestic policy at MLI, that “it's a narcissistic trope that you can do it all, that you don't have to take anything off the plate, that you don't have to sacrifice anything, that you can have everything and do everything all at the same time.”She says that messaging sets up internal conflict for parents, especially mothers, when they face choices around whether to stay home with their toddlers or return to work. She says deep down many mothers would rather stay home, and the pressure to return to a career sets up internal conflicts leading to health problems or even resentment towards the child. For example, she points to the growing trend of women posting online that they regret becoming mothers.“When you reject your own children and mothering, we know that we've taken a turn in society,” says Komisar.

433: Erica Komisar on Why the First 3 Years Matter More Than You Think (And How to Parent with Presence, Not Perfection)

"Don't live your life based in fear. Be courageous." (Erica Komisar) What if the deepest struggles we face as adults: anxiety, addiction, emotional emptiness, the constant need to prove ourselves, don't begin in adulthood at all? What if they begin in the earliest, most fragile years of life… when presence matters more than anything else? In this powerful episode of SoulTalk, I sit down with renowned psychoanalyst and parenting expert Erica Komisar for a conversation that challenges many of the assumptions we've been taught about success, independence, and what it truly means to raise emotionally healthy children. At the heart of this conversation is one radical and deeply confronting idea: human beings are born neurologically unfinished and the first three years of life are not optional when it comes to emotional development. Erica explains why a mother's physical presence acts as a child's external nervous system, how early emotional absence creates a quiet but lasting void, and why so many adults spend their lives unconsciously trying to fill it. We explore the differences between maternal and paternal roles, and the biological intelligence behind nurturing and play.  Erica also speaks candidly about the cost of modern pressures, professional ego, and cultural narratives that undervalue caregiving, and how these forces have reshaped families in ways we are only now beginning to understand. Whether you are a parent, planning to become one, healing your own childhood, or simply curious about the roots of emotional well-being, this conversation will impact you. Timestamps (00:01:50) – Erica explains why mothers and fathers should not compete to perform the same tasks. (00:03:53) –  An exploration of the concept that human infants are born nine months "too early" in terms of neurological fragility and require total vulnerability. .(00:05:32) - How a mother's physical presence regulates a baby's heartbeat, breathing, and emotional regulation. (00:07:43) -  Why a child first sees and understands themselves by looking into the mother's eyes. (00:09:37) -  Understanding the biological drivers behind maternal nurturing. (00:11:14) -  How fathers use physical play to teach children how to regulate high levels of excitement and aggression. (00:17:04) -  Erica challenges the modern notion that a parent can be "emotionally present" during the first three years without being physically present. (00:19:32) -  A discussion on how early emotional absence creates a vacuum that adults often try to fill with technology, drugs, or eating disorders. (00:21:26) - A courageous look at whether the "need" to work is driven by survival or by ego gratification and the desire for materialism. (00:26:00) -  Encouraging mothers to let go of professional ego and consider a "mommy track" to prioritize the critical early years of their children. (00:30:03) -  How the feminist movement's dismissal of caretaking as "unproductive" disrupted family structures and impacted the development of young men. (00:34:01) - Insights from Erica's new book on how to avoid treating children as "possessions" or "weapons" during a separation. (00:39:15) – Three Wisdoms for Life: Erica shares her ultimate lessons: prioritize relationships, value interdependence over independence, and live a life driven by courage rather than fear. In this episode, you'll discover: Why the first three years of life are foundational to emotional regulation and mental health. How a parent's physical presence shapes a child's sense of safety, identity, and self-worth. Why emotional absence often shows up later as addiction, workaholism, or disconnection. The biological differences between maternal nurturing and paternal play and why both matter. A courageous reexamination of work, ego, and the fear of "falling behind". How to protect a child's emotional health during separation or divorce. Why interdependence, not hyper-independence, is the key to resilient human beings. Questions I Ask What is the "Fourth Trimester" and why are we born nine months too early? Is parenting a competition or a team exercise? Can you really be "emotionally present" if you are physically absent? What is the true origin of our "voids" and addictions? When we say we "have to work," is it for survival or for the ego? How do we stop weaponizing our children during a divorce? Should we be raising our children for independence or interdependence? How do we heal the "Mother Hunger"? Do you ever feel like you are doing everything “right,” and your kid still seems anxious, dysregulated, or shut down? This conversation made me rethink what we have been told about parenting, work, and what kids actually need to feel safe. In this episode of Habits & Hustle, I sit down with psychoanalyst and parent guidance expert Erica Komisar to break down what kids actually need to build emotional resilience, why “quality time” alone isn't enough, and how parental presence shapes brain development, stress tolerance, and long-term mental health. We talk about how stress shows up as fighting, avoidance, and attention issues, why transitions like mornings and after school are when kids need you most, and how overscheduling can become a quiet form of avoidance. She also explains why social media is a pressure amplifier, not the root cause, and what it takes to build real resilience before life gets hard. Erica Komisar, LCSW, is a psychoanalyst and parent guidance expert with nearly four decades of clinical experience. She is the author of Being There and Chicken Little, the Sky Isn't Falling. This episode might be one of the most confronting and important conversations I've ever had. I'm joined by psychoanalyst, parent coach and author Erica Komisar to talk about the emotional and neurological development of children in the earliest years of life – and why those first three years matter more than we've been led to believe.Erica doesn't sugarcoat things. She talks openly about how modern parenting culture – especially the pressure on mothers to “do it all” – is clashing with what babies actually need to feel safe, regulated, and securely attached. We explore everything from daycare and maternal instinct to eating disorders, attachment trauma, and the long-term mental health effects of early separation. It's a conversation that may stir discomfort, but that's kind of the point. Because if we want to raise healthy, emotionally resilient children – or begin to heal from our own childhood wounds – we have to be willing to look at the hard truths.Find Erica:Instagram: @ericakomisarWebsite: https://www.ericakomisar.com/Try Bettervits for yourself, head on over to bettervits.co.uk and get 15% off your 1st order with my code PANDORA15.Find Dr Judith Joseph:Website: https://drjudithjoseph.com/Book: https://amzn.eu/d/bZZreAaInstagram: @drjudithjosephStay Connected with Hurt to Healing:Instagram: instagram.com/hurttohealingpodTikTok: tiktok.com/@hurttohealingpodLinkedIn: linkedin.com/company/hurt-to-healingSubstack: substack.com/@hurttohealingWebsite: hurttohealing.co.uk Hosted on Acast. Is the modern parenting playbook failing us?In this powerful and thought-provoking episode of UNLOCKED, Krista Franks sits down with psychoanalyst and author Erica Komisar, a bold voice challenging how society is raising its children—and what it's doing to our mental health.Erica unpacks the myths we've been sold about motherhood, resilience, and career ambition—and reveals the neurological consequences of early childhood stress, emotional neglect, and fractured family dynamics.Whether you're a parent, future parent, leader, or simply someone trying to live with more intention, this conversation will shift your perspective—and maybe even change how you live.Episode Summary02:45 - Why parents today are exhausted and overwhelmed  03:13 - The myth of “having it all” and the cost of two full-time jobs  07:50 - Lifestyle inflation and how children become the collateral  10:20 - Why you *can* have it all—but not all at once  14:30 - Erica's career decisions and choosing work that fits family  18:45 - Babies are NOT resilient: the science of early brain development  21:40 - How parenting literally wires the brain—for life  25:45 - What if I missed the first 3 years? Can you repair it?  28:20 - What are we *really* aiming for as parents?  30:25 - The truth behind the “quality time” myth  34:00 - Defining what it *actually* means to give your kids a good life  36:15 - Divorce, narcissism, and raising kids in two homes  40:45 - Erica's final thoughts on intentional parenting  42:20 - Where to find Erica and her upcoming work  About Erica KomisarErica Komisar, LCSW is a clinical social worker, psychoanalyst, and parent guidance expert with over 30 years of private practice experience in New York City. Timmerie addresses a show that you might want to steer clear of: Netflix’s new series Adolescence, which explores the crisis of boys today. It’s based on a story of a 13-year-old boy, Jamie, who murders a classmate after being rejected. Yes, that’s the plot, and the show tries to explore why he did it: including his deep hurt from bullying, the isolation of modern boys, and impurity. Some of the content, while important to talk about, may not be appropriate for sensitive ears. Timmerie’s big takeaway is that this show is part of the problem, not the solution. We’ve become so desensitized to disturbing content that we keep craving something more shocking. But what’s really chilling is that the show nails one thing: Boys are very much hurting. Badly. And the culture is not making it any better. The Crisis of Boys: Jamie’s character reveals a lot about the struggles young boys face today: isolation, lack of real relationships, confusion over identity, and being glued to screens. Pornography comes up in the third episode, and it’s clear it has wrecked his ability to form healthy relationships or even see himself properly. What’s Making This Worse: -The "Incel" culture: radicalized online communities of isolated men. -A society where boys are constantly told they’re “toxic” just for being themselves. -A school system that’s not built for them (sit still, be quiet, don’t move... yeah, no). -Being over-medicated and told their natural energy is a “problem.” What Parents Can Do (According to Timmerie): -Tech Lockdown: Cut down on screen time. Seriously. Let kids be bored, climb trees, get dirty, and create stories with their imagination. -Real Interaction: Kids need real FaceTime: like playing outside, talking with adults, hanging out with friends... not just scrolling through TikTok. -Empathy and Faith: The number one thing that keeps kids away from porn is developing empathy. Guess what builds empathy? Faith and good moral values. -More Time with Parents: Kids can't just get the leftover part of your time. They need the real deal, every single day. And yes, that’s exhausting, but it matters. -Parent Watchfulness: You have to be there to notice the little things. A lot of the damage happens when kids are left alone with screens. Timmerie raves about the work of Erica Komisar: particularly her books about raising resilient children by being there for them. No shortcuts. No outsourcing. Just being present. The Faith Angle: Timmerie explains why sending your children to Catholic school and going to Mass on Sundays is just the bare minimum. It’s about living the faith daily, praying with your kids, and building a strong foundation of grace and virtue. The popularity of this Netflix show is just another warning sign. We’re addicted to the messed-up stuff because we’ve let it seep into our culture. The solution? Get your kids off screens, outside, and surrounded by loving, intentional parenting.
