Farmers markets are often touted as a key to revitalizing failing downtowns. And while they aren't a panacea for all Main St. issues, when executed well, they really can turn around a business district in a special way. Our guests this week represent one of those Main Street success stories: Ivy Hagedorn and Lindsay Gagnon, of the Downtown Joplin Alliance and Joplin Empire Market. Back in December of 2016, the Empire District Electric Company donated to the Downtown Joplin Alliance over 33,000 square feet of buildings on 3.34 acres in the center of Joplin. Downtown Joplin Alliance re-purposed this historic building and its attached 11,000 sqft. garage as the new four-season Empire Market which opened in April 2018 and is now home to a growing roster of farmers, vendors and a brand new shared use commercial kitchen. Not only did the Joplin Empire Market reactivate a lackluster business district, it also breathed new life into a defunct historical building! Listen along to hear this incredible story. This week's episode is made possible by support from The Food Corridor.

An episode 74 we have Rich hagadorn, a 25-year combat veteran, senior non-commissioned officer and inductee to the Nebraska national guard Hall of Fame, and most importantly childhood friend from over 40 years ago. Here's an infectious storyteller and recounts what it was like during the first Gulf warSince he has retired from the military on his off time, he works with disabled veterans and take them out into nature and guides them and hunting and fishing. Now Rich is co-owner of soldier valley spirits which is a veteran owned veteran, run Spirit company, making great bourbon, whiskey vodka and rum and winning many national awards. But more importantly their why is to give back to non-profit organizations that support veterans. With every sale they give a portion of each sale back to non-profit veteran organizations. We are honored on the Gut check project to have a combat veteran who now is the co-owner of a business that gives back to less fortunate veterans. It's a little less sciency than we normally do, but it is entertaining For more information visit https://soldiervalleyspirits.com

The special primary election in Minnesota's first Congressional District this week narrowed the field of candidates for an August special election. Republican Brad Finstad came out on top in his party and Jeff Ettinger won the DFL primary. Now they'll compete in a special election in August to determine who fills the remaining months of former Rep. Jim Hagedorn's term. Hagedorn died in February after battling cancer. And the Legislature ended its session after lawmakers missed a deadline to pass major tax and spending bills. Some Republicans say the work can wait until after the November election, while Democrats want a special session. MPR News host Mike Mulcahy talks to Brad Finstad and Jeff Ettinger about how they won their parties' nominations and how the next round of the campaign is shaping up. Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Jensen also will join Mike to talk about what he thinks should happen to Minnesota's budget surplus and DFL House Speaker Melissa Hortman will weigh in on a special session. Guests: Brad Finstad is a Republican candidate for Congress. Jeff Ettinger is a DFL candidate for Congress. Dr. Scott Jensen is Republican candidate for governor. Rep. Melissa Hortman (DFL-Brooklyn Park) is Speaker of the Minnesota House.

How do we solve the persistent problem of youth unemployment in South Africa? In this episode of the Solutions With David Ansara podcast, I speak with Shawn Hagedorn, an independent analyst and strategy consultant, about how to promote export-driven labour-intensive growth. Shawn and I discuss the origins of South Africa's low growth trap, and the tragically high unemployment rate, which disproportionately affects the country's youth. Shawn believes that the current policy framework is too inwardly-focused, with its emphasis on localisation and beneficiaition. Instead, he argues, we need to embrace globalisation and grow the economy through exports, as many East Asian economies have successfully done. Shawn and I debate the role that ideology plays in informing economic policy, and explore how labour market regulation effectively excludes millions of people from the job market. We also speculate on the political battles that will define the run-up to the 2024 elections. How will a potential coalition government respond to the growing economic crisis facing the country?
