Host Spirit Tawfiq talks with Jocelyn Boreta, the co-founder of a bilingual mobile herb clinic by and for Latinx and Indigenous people. The Botanical Bus is helping people in her community through the power of plants and a connection to ancestors, helping cultivate health equity and the feeling of belonging. Community health workers called promotoras are providing culturally-centered health services. The promotoras meet people where they are, literally and figuratively, by taking the bus out to worksites and family service center hubs.
Jocelyn Boreta is the cofounder of the Botanical Bus, the granddaughter of a farmworker, and a community organizer committed to cultivating health equity through the empowerment of indigenous knowledge and self-healing communities. Long before the Botanical Bus became a bilingual mobile herb clinic serving Latinx and Indigenous farmworkers in Sonoma County, the seeds of this project were sprouting as Jocelyn Boreta and other local herbalists met weekly at a community garden to share their herbal knowledge. And when the devastating 2017 North Bay fires hit, they knew it was time to address health inequities in their community and launch the Botanical Bus.In this episode, Jocelyn shares the origin story of the Botanical Bus, why herbalism is activism, her go-to herbs for stress relief, how food is medicine, and the importance of culturally relevant care. You can learn more about Jocelyn and the Botanical Bus at TheBotanicalBus.org and follow them on Instagram @botanical.bus and Facebook @bilingualmobileherbclinic.
It's when we learn to cultivate a relationship with our death and make peace with the fact that one day our lives will come to pass that we can learn to lean into living life more fully and more wholeheartedly. Founder of Entheowheel, Dream Mullick is a death coach. She leads people through what she calls the ceremony of living and dying, guiding you through the portal of death into rebirth, allowing your awareness of death to become a powerful catalyst for living life more joyfully right now. In this conversation, we explore the intersection of psychedelics, death, and eastern philosophy. We explore the paradox of what it means to be human and how to hold space for opening to feeling the full spectrum of what life has to offer us, from joy and inspiration to grief, pain, and suffering, while learning how to hold our center through it all. We talk about creativity and what it takes to anchor big visions, and the necessity of slowing down and finding stillness, opening the channel to receive guidance that comes from a higher place, so we can create from that space. Justin Boreta is a founding member of the influential and iconic electronic group, The Glitch Mob. LA Weekly noted that they "have undoubtedly found the largest audience of any L.A. beat scene artist yet." Boreta explores the innate connections between music and mindfulness by creating songs out of recorded meditations, his latest project being a musical rendition of Alan Watt’s “Dream, Listen” meditation. Justin began his journey in meditation with TM, and from there became deeply interested in vipassana, or insight meditation. Justin discusses the importance of authenticity, and how learning to tell your own story is essential for a successful music career. He shares the wonders of the transformative moments found in silence, and how to restructure one’s relationship with pain. It's that time again! Which reminds me... we're rolling out a new feature this month. It's a little something we refer to affectionately as "twice as many episodes." Starting... NOW! We will be releasing a new episode every two weeks. Now, i know what you're saying. "Twice as much memekast? Won't that like... rip a hole in the universe or something?" And it might. I, for one, am willing to take that risk. To mark the occasion, i contacted a very skilled agent, and founder of one of our favorite corporate allies, benchun of False Profit, LLC. For those who don't know, False Profit hit San Francisco in 2000 like a 7.5, with a relentless series of aftershocks at their corporate headquarters at 43 Norfolk lasting five years. During that time, benchun held down a two-year run of Wednesday's at Wish (with Halon of Fake Science), later called Samurai Soundsystem (with Joe Encarnacion of BFamily Records). He started FP's monthly Dividend events at 26Mix, later moving them to Nickie's in the Lower Haight. Dividend continues under the direction of other FP agents, currently at Anu. He also started their monthly happy hour at Il Pirata, Equity, with Boreta from Nexus. He was instrumental in orchestrating the legendary Priceless campout. He also rolls with the Space Cowboys, has rocked the Unimog in BRC, Tahoe, Breakfast of Champions... Yeah, the list totally goes on. But you get the point.
