Interview by Kris PetersBy sheer virtue of the fact they were hand-picked by Foo Fighters for the Australian support slot, Hot Milk just HAVE to be a good band. But it's not until you sit back and listen to the band that it becomes evident that they are actually shit hot and if the Fooeys hadn't chosen them as support then they probably wouldn't have been doing their job right.Comprised of co-front people Han Mee and Jim Shaw who grew up together in Manchester, Hot Milk have captured people's attention on a global scale, amassing 50 million global streams across 3 x EPs and playing the likes of Reading + Leeds, Download, Lollapalooza, Rock Am Ring and more.Just looking through their brief, but busy career trajectory tells the true story of success, with Hot Milk deliberately restricting themselves to three EPs initially as a way of discovering their sound and musical identity and allowing time to fully flesh out their vision, rather than rushing to put out a full album. That planning and patience was realised earlier this year with the release of their debut album A Call To The Void, which has elevated Hot Milk even further into the sonic stratosphere. Thus, their current Australian run of shows, not just supporting Foo Fighters, but also containing two headlining shows in Melbourne and Sydney.HEAVY caught up with Han and Jim not long before their second headlining show, which is tonight in Sydney."It was great," Han enthused when asked how the first show of the tour went. "But we're changing the set because we got angry at ourselves. It's one of them, it's like, when you're playing with the Foos you just have to do your best and have fun doing it. You've gotta absorb those moments. It's the stuff dreams are made of, really."We press Han on what she means by saying they got upset at themselves."We're perfectionists, and we didn't play the best set we could play," Jim chimed in."We basically came off the back of our own headlining tour," Han continued, "and didn't have time to think about what we were gonna do for the Foo Fighters. We kind of did a stripped-back version of that, and then we realised we need to do something specific for this crowd and specific for the Foos."In the full interview, Han and Jim talk about the magnitude of sharing a stage with Foo Fighters, having to shut that out and focus on the task at hand, playing their own headlining shows, the emotional difference between playing to tens of thousands with FF one night and then playing to a more intimate pub crowd the night after, what to expect from their shows, their debut album and how it was received, how they planned the album over three EPs and more.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Barny Fletcher over Zoom video!London artist Barny Fletcher has released his new mixtape, JETPACK!Barny Fletcher has seen a meteoric rise since his debut, garnering support from BBC's Radio 1, Australia's Triple J, and features everywhere from a collaboration on the latest DJ Shadow album, a Euro 2020 fashion design campaign with Umbro, as well as inclusion on the soundtrack for Michaela Coel's HBO series I May Destroy You. Today's new single comes on the heels of previous track "Backstroke," which landed on Spotify's New Music Friday and has already racked up 250K Spotify plays since its release last month. Barny first started teasing the forthcoming JETPACK mixtape late last year with "Breakfast at Isabel's," which featured a playful video co-directed by Barny himself, and then followed with track "90s Baby" this summer. A budding pop prodigy with undeniable charisma, Barny Fletcher first debuted in 2019 with singles "Christ Flow" and "Blu Skyes," which set the stage for his hotly-tipped debut project, CANVAS2033, and its follow-up, BOZO. The releases sparked support from BBC Radio 1 on their 'Introducing Playlist,' leading to a prestigious performance slot at the BBC Introducing Stage at Radio 1 Big Weekend. He has also played a sold out London headline show as well as festival appearances at Lollapalooza Paris, Reading & Leeds, and The Great Escape.Growing up in a small Somerset, UK village to a photographer father, filmmaker mother, and very little else to occupy his hyperactive nature other than an eclectic record collection, Barny delved into the catalogs of artists such as The Kinks, Eminem, Bob Dylan, and Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, a chaotic fusion that still influences him today. Getting his start uploading weekly tracks to SoundCloud, Barny's sound has evolved into a kaleidoscopic mix of hip-hop, R&B, pop, and disco, alongside a distinct lyrical take on the absurdity of the everyday. He has landed on Spotify's NMF UK playlist 7 times, has seen Front Left, Our Generation, and Free Form (including the cover!) Spotify placements, as well as on Apple Music's New Music Daily. Outside of music, Barny enjoys developing his fashion brand 'Verlimont,' a passion project of which he enjoys sourcing quality materials and even hand-applying finishing touches himself. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing BAD CHILD over Zoom video! After five years of writing, recording, and performing around the world, the Canadian artist known as BAD CHILD presents his comprehensive debut album Free Trial today via Capitol Records stateside along with 21 Entertainment and Universal Music Canada and Virgin Records in the UK. Listen to Free Trial HERE.Free Trial examines the distorted experience of creating human connection online and acknowledges the challenges that come with navigating emotional concepts through your phone. A concept album structured to feel like a satirical dating app, Free Trial is narrated by voice over clips that guide the listener through the phases of the record like phases of a relationship. The 19-track album features previously released songs and six brand new tracks including “$1,000,000.”Reflecting back on the album now, BAD CHILD puts the music into perspective and honors his early creative process, “I started writing ‘Free Trial’ as a reaction to how I saw people using each other in love and in business, especially online. Almost as if they were Free Trials. I felt a coldness and disconnect from those around me after the trauma I had experienced. This album to a degree was the beginning of my journey trying to understand myself. It’s neurotic and childish in some ways and extremely adult and empty in others. Five years of time passed while making this. I started when I was 18, I remember the summer was colored by Frank Ocean’s ‘Blonde.’ I’ve turned into an adult since then. I’m turning 24 next month. This album in a lot of ways is my coming of age. I listen back to it and I feel like I’m listening to an experiment come alive. Its disregard for genre and technique makes me excited for the next chapters in this project. I feel like I’ve knocked down a barrier of my identity. At the end of the day when you hear this record, you’re starting your Free Trial of me.” Digging deeper into the tracks, BAD CHILD notes the importance of each song as building blocks that shaped his sound but also helped him to understand his early experiences of love, loss, intimacy, and anger. “The first song I ever wrote ‘BAD CHILD’ its auto filtered guitar and drum machine. I remember feeling free when I sang about my trauma and when people reacted to me saying it helped them, I knew I had to write more. Songs like ‘Rouge’ dive into the intimacy of becoming an adult and how love is violent and delicate. ‘Royalty’ is a song I want to scare people, it’s about wanting too much and becoming enveloped in greed. It’s very angry and NIN inspired it heavily.” Over the past three years, BAD CHILD has quietly been gathering momentum as an artist. In the summer of 2019, he released his thematic debut EP Sign Up. His song “Candy,” featuring Ryan Chambers, was included on the soundtrack for the highly publicized Netflix film, To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. BAD CHILD spent the last year reflecting on the music that shaped him; releasing a COVERS EP that included his own interpretations on songs by Harry Styles, Bill Withers and Soundgarden. As well, he flexed the production side of his artistry, experimenting with new sounds and instruments on his own tracks and collaborations.BAD CHILD’s eccentric music and unique vision landed him on the festival circuit last summer playing some of the world’s most prestigious line ups including Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Reading & Leeds and Osheaga. Earlier this year, BAD CHILD was gearing up to join grandson and NoMBe as support for concerts across North America.  Both tours have been postponed in light of the global situation. We want to hear from you! “The venues are more of a pay off than the awards, they’re the benchmark for us” Bondy, Catfish and the BottlemenAli and Dan discuss Catfish and the Bottlemen and their ascent from small, independent venues to bona fide festival headliners since their debut album, The Balcony, was released in 2014. As well as making their cases for their favourite Catfish anthems to be included in the final seven song setlist, they also compare the songwriting talents of Van McCann and Arctic Monkey's Alex Turner, the Reading/Leeds announcement that there will be two headliners per night, snobbery in the music press, the UK arenas most likely to score low on the gameshow Pointless, whether Scottish music fans are the best in the world, Jimmy Nail and Kempy's favourite soft beverage, Robinson's Blackcurrant corida.THIS WEEK'S HEADLINERS An adolescent Van McCann, frontman of Catfish and the Bottlemen, began submitting his tracks to the BBC Introducing Uploader a decade ago. He did so with intent, quoted as saying “we believe that once our music is heard, the people will love it”. He was relentlessly committed to the world hearing their music; throwing demos onstage at gigs and stuffing them under car windscreen wipers to get the word around the country. The journey started to pick up pace after their 2013 appearance on the BBC Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds’ festivals. A year later, their debut album, the Balcony, was released. Filled with perfect three-minute indie-rock anthems that resonated not just in their hometown of Llandudno, but nationwide. BBC Radio 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq described them as his favourite band of the year and, judging from their ascension up the line-up posters of festivals across the country, he wasn’t the only one who fell in love with the 11 songs on The Balcony, all of them – according to Van in an interview with Lammo - about girls and getting out a small town. The songs on their debut were made to be played live – or rather screamed back at the band from their legions of devoted fans - and follow-up The Ride, released in 2016, and last year’s effort, The Balance, have capitalised on Van’s instinct for a great hook and huge singalong choruses that match the bands’ stadium sized ambition. Experiencing Catfish live – even watching footage of their gigs and the reaction of their fans – prove that they are worthy festival headliners and next year, alongside Stormzy, come full circle as they top the bill at Reading and Leeds festival. The boys are back as a twosome this week after treating you all to a run of guests - let them know what you thought of them all and if there's anyone you want to see next! There's been some big news in the industry this week - as the lineup for Reading and Leeds 2021 has been released... It's a controversial one! With six headliners included (is it too many?), Liam Gallagher being there (again), a lack of true punk acts and the complete omission of female acts!! This leads to a more general discussion about how woman are treated in the indie music industry and what needs to be done to change it for the better... including a look at themselves!! As always two up and coming bands are discussed - CALLOW YOUTH and LYONESS. They also have two new releases to check it: She by No vacancies and Head in the Clouds by SHADE. As always any feedback is much appreciated so please do let the lads know if you enjoyed (or didn't) on the social media's - @theSRpodcast on Twitter and Instagram. Also they've been getting a lot of support on the YouTube channel so keep that up, make sure you're subscribing, liking and commenting!! Until next week everyone, peace xx

We had the opportunity to interview The Faim at SOMA San Diego!"For The Faim, an album is not only about showing what you can do now, but what you want to do in the future. The Perth four-piece went into the making of State of Mind, the band’s debut full-length, with the goal of expanding their range and getting out of their comfort zone. Over the course of two years, the musicians worked with numerous songwriters and producers to craft a collection of songs that showcase a vast range of styles and tones.“We wanted to the show the variety of skills between the four of us,” says Stephen. “But we also want to write and record the music we want to hear. We asked ourselves, ‘What is missing? What do we want to be hearing?’ And then we decided, ‘Why don’t we just write that?’”“We wanted to stick true to our roots and where we came from, which is essentially just us being able to explore the passion and love we have for music,” Josh adds. “But we also wanted to experiment and to have fun with the songs.”The Faim (French for “the hunger”) have been building to this moment since they performed their first show at Stephen’s 18th birthday party, then known as Small Town Heroes. Josh and Stephen grew up together, playing together on various sports teams, and began writing music together after an assignment in Stephen’s music class. Soon the musicians were penning their own songs, inspired by bands like Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, and Metallica, and each brought in an array of musical influences, from indie rock to jazz to pop-punk. Sam and Linden, who met working at The Hen House Rehearsal Studios in Perth, rounded out the band’s lineup after they changed their name to The Faim. For several years, The Faim hustled to build a following in Perth, regularly handing out flyers and posters outside Perth Arena and recording 30-second covers of their favorite tracks to post online. That motivation was important in the isolated community’s small music scene, and the band was dedicated and willing to sacrifice everything to follow their dream. That hard work paid off when the band got the attention of producer John Feldmann in the summer of 2016. They noticed that Feldmann had posted a call on Instagram for unsigned bands with touring experience, and although The Faim had no real touring experience, they messaged him anyway. The producer wrote back a few weeks later and everything instantly went from zero to a hundred. The musicians brought 30 half-written ideas to Feldmann’s studio in Los Angeles the following year, where they enlisted the help of several co-writers, including Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy), Mark Hoppus (Blink 182), Josh Dun (Twenty One Pilots) and Ashton Irwin (5 Seconds of Summer). Their debut EP, Summer Is a Curse, dropped in the fall of 2018, hinting at the potential for a full-length album. The title track, “Summer Is A Curse,” an anthemic song the band wrote with Irwin about realizing that you have to follow your dreams even if it requires a sacrifice, became an immediate hit, with over 15 million streams worldwide to date. The songs on State of Mind encapsulate nearly four years, ranging from an old favorite called “Infamous” to “Summer Is a Curse” to a brand new track “Humans,” the first single off the album. The songs, recorded mostly in Los Angeles in various studios with a collection of different producers, reveal how The Faim has evolved since their inception. Co-created with Patrick Morrissey and David Dahlquist while the band was writing songs in New York, “Humans” is an epic rock anthem with a massive, resonant chorus that reflects on how connected we all actually are. “Tongue Tied,” produced by Drew Fulk, takes the band even further out of their comfort zone, as does “State of Mind,” which was created with the purpose of testing new waters.“We wanted to shake up our mindset and our way of doing things,” Stephen says. “For ‘State of Mind,’ I picked a chord I never play and that’s how the song starts. That song was originally five or six minutes long and it comes from the idea of doing something we’ve never done before. We wanted to go to a place we’d never gone to. Sometimes you have to do the complete opposite of what you think you should do to make sure that’s very much yourself. It came together really well.”Overall, the songs contain a variety of influences. The musicians looked both to artists they grew up with like Red Hot Chili Peppers to newer bands like The 1975. The lyrics come from emotions or experiences personal to the band members as a whole, with each song centering on an idea that’s relatable to both themselves and their listeners.“We write from an honest place,” explains Josh. “That’s something we always want to stay true to. If you write songs that are real, people will be able to connect to them, especially during the live performances. It has to resonate with us for it be relatable to our fans as well. On this album it was about connecting with ourselves and explore our influences and our own talent. If we stick to who we are and what we feel hopefully everyone else will find something in the music too.”Over the past year, The Faim has built up a strong following around the world, from Australia to Europe to the States. They’ve performed at Download Festival, Slam Dunk, and Reading & Leeds, and toured with PVRIS, Against the Current, Sleeping With Sirens, and Andy Black. In 2018, The Faim performed 100 shows across three continents and 13 countries, while in 2019 the band embarked on their first headlining tour, selling out shows in cities like London, Sydney, Amsterdam and Hamburg. “Summer Is A Curse” has become a bona fide hit Germany, hitting No. 12 on the airplay charts after being played 24,000 times on German radio in 2018. The track, which appears in a Jeep commercial in France, hit No. 2 at radio in the Czech Republic. The band also scored the soundtrack to Coca-Cola's global advertising campaign for Coke Zero, which was shown in 18 countries worldwide. Overall, The Faim have racked up over 26 million streams globally – and that’s just the beginning.State of Mind reveals a band on the rise, a group of musicians who are all about making genuine songs that bring people together and create a community.“You’ll never get anything fake from us,” Stephen says. “Our hearts and souls are on our sleeves 100 percent of the time. We want to keep things true to how we started. We do this because we love music and we want to play music and that’s it. There are no ulterior motives. The goal is to play music and that will be the goal for our entire career.”Josh Raven – Lead VocalsStephen Beerkens – Bass/KeyboardSamuel Tye – GuitarLinden Marissen – Drumshttp://thefaim.com/https://www.bringinitbackwards.com/Tera@BringinitBackwards.comCREDITS:Theme Song: Scott RussoDesign: Oscar RodriguezPhoto: Michelle Grace Hunder

The Co Waterford-born, London-based self-made mogul started his Mean Fiddler empire in 1982 with one humble yet revolutionary venue: innovations at The Mean Fiddler in Harlesden included cold Budweiser beer, a proper PA system and decent showers for the bands. The Fleadh, Benicassim, and the Reading & Leeds festivals all soon followed as part of an illustrious career in the live music industry. Having also run the likes of Madstock, The Phoenix Festival, Tribal Gathering and Homelands, in 2001 Mean Fiddler overhauled Glastonbury, revitalising it for the 21st century. Power never forgot his Irish roots whilst building Mean Fiddler into a global promotional enterprise, which he finally sold to rivals Clear Channel in 2005 for £38 million.
