James Biemiller, USGS An unresolved aspect of tsunami generation in great subduction earthquakes is the offshore competition between coseismic deformation mechanisms, such as shallow megathrust slip, slip on one or more splay faults, and off-fault plastic deformation. In this presentation, we first review results from data-constrained 3D dynamic rupture modeling of an active plate-boundary-scale low-angle normal fault, the Mai’iu fault, that show how stress, fault structure, and the strength and thickness of overlying sediments influence shallow coseismic deformation partitioning in an extensional setting. Similar modeling approaches can shed light on shallow coseismic deformation in contractional settings, such as the Cascadia subduction zone (CSZ). Along the northwestern margin of the U.S., robust paleoseismic proxies record multiple M>8 paleoearthquakes over the Holocene, despite limited modern interface seismicity. Additionally, growth strata in the outer wedge record Late Quaternary slip on active landward- and seaward-vergent splay faults inboard of prominent variably-vergent frontal thrusts at the deformation front. The relative importance of megathrust vs. splay fault slip in generating tsunami hazards along the Pacific Northwest coastline is relatively unconstrained. Here, we develop data-driven 3D dynamic rupture models of the CSZ to analyze structural controls on shallow rupture processes including slip partitioning across the frontal thrusts, splays, and underlying decollement. Initial simulations show that trench-approaching ruptures typically involve meter-scale slip on variably oriented preexisting planar splay faults. Splay slip reduces slip on the subduction interface in a shadowed zone updip of their intersection, with greater splay slip leading to stronger shadowing. We discuss two structural controls on splay faults’ coseismic slip tendency: their dip angle and vergence. Gently dipping splays host more slip than steeply dipping ones and seaward-vergent splays host more slip than landward-vergent ones. We attribute these effects to distinct static and dynamic mechanisms, respectively. Finally, we show initial results from simulations with newly mapped frontal thrust geometries from CASIE21 seismic reflection data and discuss future directions for our CSZ dynamic rupture modeling project.

featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2595: Incapillo Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Wednesday, 12 June 2024 is Incapillo.Incapillo is a Pleistocene-age caldera (a depression formed by the collapse of a volcano) in the La Rioja Province of Argentina. It is the southernmost volcanic centre in the Andean Central Volcanic Zone (CVZ) that erupted during the Pleistocene. Incapillo is one of several ignimbrite or caldera systems that, along with 44 active stratovolcanoes, are part of the CVZ.Subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate is responsible for most of the volcanism in the CVZ. After activity in the volcanic arc of the western Maricunga Belt ceased six million years ago, volcanism commenced in the Incapillo region, forming the high volcanic edifices Monte Pissis, Cerro Bonete Chico and Sierra de Veladero. Later, a number of lava domes were emplaced between these volcanoes.Incapillo is the source of the Incapillo ignimbrite, a medium-sized deposit comparable to the Katmai ignimbrite. The Incapillo ignimbrite was erupted 0.52 ± 0.03 and 0.51 ± 0.04 million years ago and has a volume of about 20.4 cubic kilometres (4.9 cu mi). A caldera with dimensions of 5 by 6 kilometres (3.1 mi × 3.7 mi) formed during the eruption. Later volcanism generated more lava domes within the caldera and a debris flow in the Sierra de Veladero. The lake within the caldera may overlie an area of ongoing hydrothermal activity. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:49 UTC on Wednesday, 12 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Incapillo on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Stephen Neural.

There are geochemists and isotope geochemists... this episode we're speaking with the latter and this discussion could not be more interesting! Seriously. As usual, my favorite part of the episode is Tea Time, but for a different reason. As an undergraduate, Libby asked a question to established researchers that were giving a talk to her university 8000+ of miles from their lab en route to do some fieldwork at the Platreef (Bushveld Complex, South Africa) that became a huge contribution to science and ore deposits research, as well as the focus for her MSc and PhD research. Today's Resource: 20 Reasons to Question Plate Tectonics by Ellis HughesThis book traces the history of objections raised to the theory of plate tectonics, starting in the late 1960s. A surprising number of professional geologists and geophysicists raised legitimate concerns about the theory at the time it was proposed in the 1960s. Little was known about the ocean floor at that time. As more data has become available, it has become apparent that the theory has major issues. Twenty of these issues are described in detail in this book, and fifteen additional problems are mentioned briefly. The "insider scoop" is revealed, answering the question of why so many geologists support the theory if it has so many problems. Finally, the book gives summaries of four other theories that explain the earth's geological features without using plate tectonics.

Today, Turkey experienced two devastating earthquakes, with reports of widespread damage and multiple casualties. This tragedy serves as a reminder of the importance of being prepared for earthquakes. Earthquakes are one of the most unpredictable and destructive natural disasters, striking without warning and causing massive destruction in their wake. To minimize the impact of an earthquake, individuals, families, and communities must take steps to prepare for this type of disaster. Preparation is key when it comes to earthquakes. It is important to have a plan in place in case of an earthquake, including knowing what to do during and after an earthquake. This can include developing an emergency plan, preparing an emergency kit, and knowing how to evacuate buildings and seek shelter safely. One of the most important steps in preparing for an earthquake is to secure heavy furniture and appliances, such as bookcases and televisions, to prevent them from falling during an earthquake. This can also include securing your home by installing seismic straps and earthquake valves on gas lines. Additionally, individuals should also educate themselves about the types of earthquakes that are most likely to occur in their area and understand the potential dangers of aftershocks. This knowledge can help individuals make informed decisions about the best ways to protect themselves and their families during and after an earthquake. Did you know there are four distinct categories of earthquakes? Tectonic quakes shake the earth's crust due to geological forces. Volcanic temblors occur in connection with volcanic activity, while collapse quakes take place underground during mining operations or cave-ins. Finally, explosion earthquakes come from nuclear and/or chemical explosions! https://www.un-spider.org/category/disaster-type/earthquake You may not realize it, but living in the Pacific Northwest comes with its own seismic surprises. From shallow fault quakes to deep earthquakes that occur beneath a subducting ocean slab - they can all be Big Ones! The longest of the three types are likely those monstrously powerful Subduction zone earthquakes which have been known to last several minutes at their peak strength. Better keep your earthquake kits stocked and ready for action, just in case! https://www.burkemuseum.org/static/earthquakes/bigone/threekinds.html The terms "types" and "kinds" of earthquakes are sometimes used interchangeably, but they can refer to different aspects of earthquakes. In conclusion, today's earthquake in Turkey serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of preparing for earthquakes. By taking the necessary steps to prepare, individuals, families, and communities can reduce the impact of an earthquake and ensure their safety and well-being in the event of a disaster. So, let's all commit to earthquake preparedness, and protect our children, ourselves, and our communities from the devastating effects of this natural disaster." P.S. Joan Gomberg, USGS Like many of its partners, the USGS has recognized the tremendous opportunity for advancing earthquake science that subduction zones (SZs) offer, because of 1) the extraordinary diversity of SZ earthquakes and other natural phenomena they initiate and respond to, 2) the new perspectives inspired by required multi-disciplinary and international work, and 3) technological advances enabling offshore exploration. Participation of USGS personnel in SZ-relevant partners’ programs helps to ensure that the USGS fulfills its mandate to assess earthquake hazards and provide products useful for reducing risk. This mandate distinguishes USGS’s SZ activities, but also complements the goals of its many partners. USGS SZ science has largely been motivated and guided by its scientists, but with growing engagement at higher authoritative levels to reprogram and request new SZ-targeted resources. Although not a formal USGS project or program, SZ issues figure prominently in those that are, such as Powell Center projects focused on Cascadia megathrust recurrence and another on tsunami sources, the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning project, the USGS-USAID Disaster Assistance programs, and a Risk Research and Applications Community of Practice. We present a few examples of forefront USGS SZ research, conducted in partnership with numerous collaborators. These include field and modeling studies of paleo-earthquake shaking proxies such as ‘fragile geologic features’ and onshore and offshore landslides, implementation of new seafloor geodetic measurement capabilities for event to coupling studies, terrestrial-quality resolution of submarine subsurface and surficial imaging and coring to test paradigms about recent and paleo-earthquakes, and much more!

Earthquakes at an Uncoupled Subduction Zone: The 2020-2021 Shumagin Gap Earthquake Sequence

Matt Herman, CSU Bakersfield Since 2020, three large magnitude earthquakes have occurred in the vicinity of the Shumagin Islands in Alaska: the 22 July 2020 Mw 7.8 megathrust event, the 19 October 2020 Mw 7.6 intra-slab strike-slip event and the 29 July 2021 Mw 8.2 megathrust event. The 2020 events occurred in the transition from high plate interface coupling east of the Shumagin Islands to low coupling near the Shumagin Islands, and our finite element models of coupling demonstrate that the slip behavior and kinematics of these events reflect this coupling transition. The 2021 Mw 8.2 megathrust earthquake occurred further to the east, rupturing a large part of the 10 November 1938 Mw 8.2 rupture zone. Slip models and aftershock activity suggest that nearly all the slip deficit that could accumulate since 1938 was recovered in the mainshock. We find using our coupling models that an uncoupled Shumagin Gap is most compatible with observations from the July 2021 earthquake. Although the Shumagin Gap appears to be uncoupled based on these earthquake sequences, the coupling situation up-dip of the 2021 earthquake remains enigmatic. Using our modeling setup, we explore implications for scenarios with various degrees of coupling on the shallow plate interface.

Subduction zones are places where a slab of oceanic lithosphere plunges down into the mantle below. The slab consists of the sediments on top, crustal rocks in the middle, and the lithospheric mantle on the bottom, all plunging down together as a kind of sandwich. In each of these layers is an ingredient that plays a key role in shaping the evolution of the Earth over geological time – and that is water. Geoff Abers has conducted extensive research on water in subduction zones. In this episode, he explains how he uses seismic observations to map the distribution of water in subducting plates and in the overriding mantle. He then couples these observations with computer-based models of the physics and chemistry of the subducting plates to predict the fate of the water in the downgoing plate. The results are surprising — over geological time the amount of water in all of today's oceans may have been mixed into the deep mantle by subducting plates. Geoff Abers is Professor of Geological Sciences at Cornell University.

What determines when an earthquake will happen or not? Slow-Slip Events are relatively minor movements that don't cause massive disruption like earthquakes despite having similar elements. Subduction, the process of a plate sliding under another plate, is still a key factor with slow-slip events. With the help of Pacific Triangle, Iowa State University's Geology Department is using drones for the first time to gather data on slow-slip events along the coast of California to learn more about how they happen. This research project will hopefully help us better understand its more violent cousin, the earthquake, so that we can better predict major events in the future.

On the first stop of the “Las cuatro esquinas Tour” around the United States, Dr. Adriana Pacheco and Seattle Escribe bring together a panel of key players in education, culture, and literature to discuss names, topics, trends and voices in literature by writers of hispanic heritage and their impact on the culture. The literature of writers from Spanish-speaking countries who write from the United States, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Spain is impacting the world in an unprecedented way. Awards, publishing houses, curated lists, and translations of new books give proof of the movement. Hablemos, escritoras has followed these changes and recognizes synergies that mark our contemporary world, as well as the causes and motivations that have driven the phenomenon. This talk, part of the 2022  “Las cuatro esquinas Tour” around the United States, will allow for conversations with cultural advocates, members of the community, and especially readers about what we have learned after years of work. Most importantly, it offers space to learn what is happening in our region, the challenges we face, and the road that still needs to be traveled in recognizing new names, topics, and trends. The tour's goal is to broaden the scope of the conversation beyond regional borders and to encourage and foster meaningful, nationwide conversations about the presence, impacts, and influences of literature, language, and the hispanic culture in the United States. This event will be presented in English. Presented by Town Hall Seattle, Seattle Escribe, and Hablemos, escritoras. Participants Catalina Marie Cantú (Xicana) is of Indigenous Mexican/Madeiran heritage and is a multi-genre writer, interdisciplinary artist, Jack Straw Fellow, and Alum of VONA/Voices and The Mineral School. David Bercovici on How Plate Subduction Starts

Geology Bites By Oliver Strimpel

Subduction zones are a fundamental aspect of plate tectonics, yet we still don't really understand how subduction initiates. It's a tough problem because as oceanic plates move away from a mid-ocean spreading center and cool, they get stiffer and should become more and more resistant to bending and sinking down into the mantle. But recent work suggests that the clue to this puzzle lies in the physics of grains at the microscale. David Bercovici is one of the geologists who has pioneered the approach that looks at what happens in the rocks of the oceanic lithosphere on the scale of a few microns. It turns out that stresses in the plate can generate bands of vertically aligned weakness that could make the lithosphere much weaker in precisely the direction in which it sinks into the mantle. David Bercovici is a professor of Earth and Planetary Science at Yale University. In the podcast, he explains how the behavior of stressed mineral grains at the microscale can radically affect the strength of oceanic lithosphere on the plate scale. The model is consistent with lab experiments and the contrasting seismic observations of the Pacific and Atlantic plates.

A tabletop showdown “from one killer to another,” followed by one of those killers leaning into the title. Holden reverting to form in dealing with the Protomolecule: “Blow it up real good.” Electoral troubles on Earth. Messing with Aunt Bobbie when messing with Aunt Bobbie is STRICTLY PROHIBITED by the A Legitimate Salvage Bobbie Draper Appreciation Society.
