Have you ever felt overwhelmed trying to learn herbal medicine and astrology? This is one of the biggest challenges I hear from people studying herbalism on its own… throw astrology on top of it, and it just seems like too much. They say, “I was already overwhelmed trying to learn how to become a great herbalist. And now, to practice this way, I have to learn the massive system of astrology too. I'm busy with my day job, family, home, and garden, and it's too much.” But it doesn't have to be that way! There is a strategic approach that allows you to study herbal medicine and astrology at the same time. The philosophical bases of both herbal medicine and astrology are, at their core, one and the same- for they are built off the same fundamental blueprint of nature. When you study these fundamental principles and patterns of astrology and herbalism simultaneously, it enhances your learning of both systems, making it quicker to learn them and thus incorporate them into your work with people. This is what I call the Zodiacal Study Strategy. It is a model for study that you can incorporate into the time you have available—or rather the time you create—to optimize your learning process of both herbalism and astrology. It is built on the similarities between the philosophical foundations of holistic herbalism and astrology, or what I think of as the architecture of the zodiac. As with anything worth learning, you must make time to study, integrate, and practice. Unfortunately, it won't magically appear. What differentiates a good herbalist or astrologer from a great one is discipline and consistency in studying and gaining experience. And it's about using your time strategically. What follows is one year's worth of study. By the end of that year, you will have a solid foundation in both astrological medicine and clinical herbal medicine. ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at: http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/ Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/ ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. You have a double treat in store with this episode.First, have you ever wondered what it takes to grow herbs commercially on a large scale? I kept hearing about Oshala Farm from my students, so last year, I placed an order to check them out. I was so impressed with the herbs I received and knew immediately that I wanted to interview Elise Higley, the farm's cofounder! From finding the right location to the hard work of growing, harvesting, processing the harvest, fulfilling orders, stewarding the land… there are so many details to juggle! I came away from this episode with even more respect for herb farmers than I already had. I hope you'll enjoy this peek into running a successful herb farm, too!Second, stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) is one of those herbs that people grow to love and crave, even if they're not initially drawn to the taste. I loved discussing the gifts of this nutrient-dense herb with Elise! Who couldn't benefit from an herbal ally that:► Is deeply nourishing, strengthening, and energizing – an herbal tonic you can enjoy every day (and that your body will thank you for)► Can provide support to folks who suffer from seasonal allergies► Supports kidney health► and more…To quote Elise, “Nettle is nutritive, high in iron, high in minerals… I feel like it's a staple as far as nourishing and fortifying the body.” I completely agree. This episode is full of tips and ideas you can borrow like:► Best practices for growing medicinal herbs (whether you use this to inspire your own garden or as a springboard for asking questions when you're sourcing herbs to purchase)► Possible herbs to blend with nettle when making infusions (and how they complement nettle)► Various ways to work with both fresh and dried nettle leaf► How to grow stinging nettle in your own gardenFor those of you who don't already know her, Elise Higley is a folk herbalist, wife, mother, grandmother and farmer. With her background in Western Herbalism at California School of Herbal Studies and her husband Jeff's background in organic farming, they blended their dreams and created a full-fledged herb farm in 2013. Together they own and operate Oshala Farm. Located in Applegate Valley, Oregon, Oshala Farm has over 80 medicinal herbs in cultivation.Elise's teachers and mentors include Cascade Anderson Geller, Rosemary Gladstar, Karen Aguiar, Teri Jensen, Lily Mazzarella, Autumn Summers, David Hoffman, Shana Lipner-Grover, Jon Carlson and, of course, the plants themselves! In her downtime, (9pm-5am) she helps with the Breitenbush Herbal Conference and TerraVita Herbal Symposium and works on agricultural advocacy with Our Family Farms. If you'd like to hear more from Elise, which I highly recommend, then head to the show notes where you can get easy links for her website and social media. You have a real treat in store with today's episode, all about the many gifts of stinging nettle (Urtica dioica). My guest, renowned herbalist David Winston, shares multiple stories about the rich herbal medicine of nettle leaf, nettle root, and nettle seed, gleaned from his decades of clinical practice. David shares so many pearls of wisdom about stinging nettle, herbs, and herbalism during our conversation that I think you'll agree I made the right choice in letting the interview meander longer than usual. As a listener, you'll also receive access to David's recipe for Green Powder Spice Blend. This nutrient-dense blend is delicious sprinkled on eggs, cooked grains, soups, stews, salads, cooked greens, and other savory dishes.By the end of this episode, you'll know:► What are the benefits and applications of nettle leaf, nettle root, and nettle seeds?► Is there any real hope for remineralizing bones weakened by osteoporosis?► How herbalism and Western medicine beautifully shore up one another's weak spots► Why it's so important to treat the person rather than the disease► Why do so many herbal traditions emphasize complex formulations?► What is David's advice for aspiring herbalists? Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation: “Opening your mind to listen…I'm a big fan of research and science and looking at the old literature and clinical experience, but never downplay the importance of learning to listen to the plants.”For those of you who don't already know David, he's an Herbalist and Ethnobotanist with 54 years of training in Chinese, Western/Eclectic and Southeastern herbal traditions. He has been in clinical practice for 47 years and is an herbal consultant to physicians, herbalists and researchers throughout the USA, Europe and Canada. David Winston, RH (AHG) is an internationally known lecturer, author, ethnobotanist, and the founder of Herbalist & Alchemist. For over 45 years, David has been studying, practising, teaching, and researching Chinese, Western/Eclectic, and Southeastern American herbal traditions. In this episode, David clarifies sound-byte popular herbal misinformation. Many ancient herbal traditions address an energetic approach that he has seen as far more effective than a single herb approach to treating disease, envisioning a sustainable future for medicine as a synthesis of Western and complementary botanical medicine. David's world-renowned two-year herbal studies program, the David Winston Center for Herbal Studies, has been educating Herbalists, Physicians, Nurses, Naturopathic Physicians, Veterinarians, and Nutritionists in the art and science of clinical herbal medicine since 1980.David has one of the largest private herbal research libraries in the U.S. The Herbal Therapeutics Research Library has over 8000 volumes, from 1550 to present, and over 15,000 articles on file. This library is a working library used for research for the herbal and nutritional industry as well as for his writing and for Herbalist & Alchemist.David was one of the professional herbalists who founded the American Herbalists Guild, the first professional herbalists' organization in the US, which certifies clinical herbalists. He is on the professional membership review committee. David Winston has been on the Review Committee of the Botanical Safety Handbook, which produced a significant information resource, which the entire botanical industry, from manufacturers to researchers, relies upon.He is the clinical herbal consultant to hundreds of prominent physicians (MDs, NDs, DOs, DCs) throughout the US, Canada and Europe. Mankind's relationship to the natural world is as diverse and dynamic as each individual plant, animal, mineral, and piece of geography. There are many ways that we can engage with our living planet, be it through herbalism, gardening, hiking and other explorations, meditation and observation, and even artistic expressions. There are many ways for us to connect, and it is important to do so, as the human species is not a separate entity from the whole web of life. Each takes their own path. This series explores some of the many ways in which people may weave a tapestry of meaning in coexistence and mutuality with what surrounds us, these are Stories From the Earth.

Marija is a research scientist-turned-clinical herbalist, practicing in Colorado since 2010. In this episode, Marija talks to us about the fascinating world of endophytes, their surprising influence on the herbal medicine we make, and explains the difference between good and bad research articles. Before becoming an herbalist, she spent a dozen years as a research scientist, focusing on cancer and infectious disease. Despite the high-tech past, Marija's focus as an herbalist is a simple and holistic approach to health that integrates botanical tradition with a critical evaluation of what botanical research science has to say. Marija has been studying herbs, mushrooms, and essential oils intensely since 2008. As a clinical herbalist, Marija helps people to take charge of their health and reconnect with the green world of which we're all a part. As a writer and teacher, the goal is the same, simply on a larger scale. A goal, in particular, is to use her background in biomedical science as a bridge to introduce botanical medicine to those not already on the bandwagon. Marija studied botanical medicine with Pam Fisher at the Berkeley Herbal Center (formally the Ohlone Center of Herbal Studies), with Kathi Keville at the Green Medicine Herb School, and shorter stints with others herbalists. She earned her doctorate in microbiology from the University of Washington School of Medicine while studying cancer-promoting mechanisms of human papillomavirus, the primary cause of cervical cancer. Her postdoctoral research on dengue virus replication was through the School of Public Health at the University of California-Berkeley. She was an infectious diseases trainee at the UW Center for AIDS & STD and an infectious diseases fellow through UC San Francisco Division of Infectious Diseases. Marija grew up running wild in the woods. (Well, at least 'til sunset.) Patricia Kyritsi Howell, RH (AHG), is the founder and director of the BotanoLogos School of Herbal Studies, and author of Medicinal Plants of the Southern Appalachians. Patricia has been a practicing clinical herbalist for over 28 years, and in this episode, she shares with us two of her favorite herbal allies- motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) and mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris). In our conversation, we discuss the traditional ways in which these plants have been used to support women's bodies and cycles, and different ways of working with them. Patricia shares with us her own personal accounts of how and why these plants have been such an important part of her own healing journey, in addition to numerous clients she has worked with over the years. While each of these plants has a rich history of medicinal uses, Patricia also gives some insight to a more magical and energetic side of these wild weeds, and shares some tips for forming your own connection with them.
