Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

When the daughter of a Vietnam veteran asks you to review "Apocalypse Now," you answer the call. Both Gene and Dick agree this movie is epic, but the topic of Marlon Brando's weight sparks an all-out war. This 1979 adaptation of "Heart of Darkness" is both miracle and masterpiece, expertly depicting drug use (Big D verified) and the convoluted crossroads of the Vietnam War (Gene is a bit of an expert.) The attention to detail, recklessness and introspection hit American audiences with a film unlike any they'd seen before, and the shockwaves still resonate on this 2023 podcast. Where Dick Ebert sees a disjointed plot, Gene Lyons sees the direct DNA of Joseph Conrad's groundbreaking novella. And where Gene sees a disappointing ending, Big D tells the story of the John Milius ending that never was.     SUBSCRIBE Android: https://shatpod.com/android Apple: https://shatpod.com/apple All: https://shatpod.com/subscribe CONTACT Email: hosts@shatpod.com Website: https://shatpod.com/movies Leave a Voicemail: Web: https://shatpod.com/voicemail Leave a Voicemail: Call: (914) 719-7428 SUPPORT THE PODCAST Donate or Commission: https://shatpod.com/support Shop Merchandise: https://shatpod.com/shop Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Grant Farhall has been with Getty Images for 10 years, the last two as chief product officer. Earlier, he worked for Rogers Communications as a broadcaster/newsroom assistant at radio station CFFR. Before that, Grant was a studio manager for Evolvs Media Inc. Gene Foca has been with Getty Images since 2017. In his role as chief marketing officer, he reports directly to the CEO and serves on the executive committee that oversees the brand's global marketing and communications efforts. Before joining Getty Images, Gene was senior VP of marketing for Fresh Direct. Earlier, he spent four years with Amazon, ultimately rising to the post of senior director of marketing.  In this interview with Lippe Taylor CEO Paul Dyer, Grant and Gene focus their thoughts on the merging of marketing and product teams, data-driven visual-content procurement, the trust-damaging impact of deep-fake technology, and what Getty's acquisition of free photo source Unsplash might mean to creatives. Here are some key takeaways from this talk with Gene Foca and Grant Farhall: Visuals of all mediums are in a crisis of trust.  It is becoming ever easier to produce "deep fake" photos and videos, which is causing consumers of media to question whether anything they're seeing these days is real - representing a trust crisis for visual-based companies and news media alike. Grant said part of the response to this emerging crisis of believability must be an insistence that creators of visual content clearly label their works as real or augmented—and, if the latter, to identify the CGI elements so that prospective users can exercise informed consent before buying. Beyond that, multiple measures are being taken to ensure that all changes and alterations made to visual files (both video and images) have an indelible record of alterations visible to anyone with the file.  Marketing pros must embrace the merging of their discipline and that of product managers. Grant said it once was common for marketing and product development to be separate entities that each did its own thing, but more and more, they're being pressed to work collaboratively. Consequently, said Gene, marketers have to be "less hung up" about having control of the things traditionally within their discipline and to instead partner with the product team in order to more successfully support the customer journey. This is a naturally cohesive path forward that integrates marketing insight and consumer demand with product development, enabling insight-based innovation. In order to rise to a position of leadership in your organization, become better at finding problems and turning yourself into a solutions architect.  Both Gene and Grant agreed that people on their way to the top need to be able to play well with others. Additionally, Grant said ladder-climbers should be on the lookout for shortcomings in the organization's operations, take ownership of them, and figure out how to fix what's broken or not running right. “Be the expert in the area that needs an expert,” he said. Meanwhile, Gene cautioned against misunderstanding what it means to “follow your passion”—according to Gene, “people too often think that following their passion means they can and should jump from the tasks they don't like to those they think will be more satisfying. But to understand the underpinnings of the business, you first have to do the tedious, menial work. You have to learn how the pieces connect. From there, you start being able to exercise your passion.” Thanks for listening to Frictionless Marketing! If you enjoyed this episode, why not share it with your friends and colleagues on LinkedIn. Should Apple replace these potentially "defective" products? Bryan dischttps://www.technightowl.com/radio/usses the history of supposedly flawed Apple gear, including the Antennagate controversy that impacted the iPhone 4. Other topics on the menu include Facebook's ongoing problems, and the negative impact to Apple's stock price after the company announced  that it would no longer report unit sales of individual products in its quarterly financials. And what about the promised 2019 Mac Pro? Bryan repeats his theory that it will be the first Mac to be powered by one of Apple's custom-designed ARM processors instead of an Intel CPU. The discussion also focuses on the HomePod and its possible value as a smart speaker. Both Gene and Peter explain, at length, why a HomePod is not on their shopping lists right now, and whether Apple could sell more copies if it loosened its dependence on Apple's ecosystem when it comes to being able to listen to your stuff.

But does its thin and light design still prevent the powerful Intel Core i9 processor from reaching its full potential? What about reports of a kernel panic bug that impacts some of the new MacBook Pros and the iMac Pro? What about giving consumers the right to buy genuine OEM parts for their tech gear, such as iPhones, and have access to service manuals? Can Apple and other companies void your warranty because you decided to fix your gear yourself, buy gray market parts, and/or have the repairs done at a shop not authorized by the manufacturer? Gene and Russell also talk at length about Samsung's Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ smartphones, recently introduced, and how they might compare with the iPhone X. What about the cameras, and which model delivers the best pictures? Did Samsung improve the quality of its facial and iris recognition features? On today's episode of the Healthy Wealthy and Smart Podcast, I had the pleasure of collaborating with Dr. Gene Shirokobrod from the Therapy Insiders Podcast to discuss female leadership in physical therapy. Gene is a doctor of physical therapy and entrepreneur and is currently the CEO of Recharge LLC and CEO and co-founder of UpDoc Media. He is also the co-inventor of arc and has had experience with crowdfunding, having raised $30k in 40 days on Kickstarter.   In this episode, we discuss: -Why are women not thought of as leaders in the physical therapy profession? -Creative solutions for hiring the best fit for your company's culture -Enhancing the female voice through amplification -How to grow an audience with solid content and consistency -Strategies to overcome imposter syndrome and how to foster an environment for vulnerability -And so much more!   Although women occupy many of the highest leadership roles in physical therapy, the influence of female therapists at professional conferences and on social media is not comparable. At a higher level, Gene notes, “We hark on evidence based and we hark on following data and data has shown that women are as good and in most cases better leaders than men but we are still entrenched in more traditional mindset of leadership.”   Both Gene and I stress that more conversation around gender in leadership roles in physical therapy needs to continue with the overall goal to ensure equality of opportunity. Gene believes, "It's about having the opportunity to be a leader and be seen based on merit and not on sex.”   Many different qualities can encompass successful leadership however the one value a leader must possess is the ability to, “make sure that other people around you are succeeding and I don't think that that's sex dependent.”   For more information on Gene: Dr. Gene Shirokobrod is a physical therapist guided by entrepreneurial passion. He is the CEO of Verve LLC, who along with his business partner Corey Fleischer, developed and created arc. In 2014, arc was successfully funded on crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, raising over $30k in 40 days. After the launch of arc, Dr. Gene and Corey had the great experience of auditioning for Shark Tank. They made it through round 1 and being called to move on to round 2. While working as a full time clinician, Dr. Gene started a podcast called Therapy Insiders. What started out as a fun hobby, quickly grew into a serious endeavor. Therapy Insiders steadily gained listeners and followers, eventually reaching #1 Medical Podcast on iTunes. Due to the success of Therapy Insiders, Dr. Gene co-founded UpDoc Media, a company focused on producing high quality custom content and digital marketing for healthcare companies. UpDoc media launched with 4 podcasts, focusing on business, fitness, running and of course medicine. UpDoc media is focused on providing "content you NEED to know, that is delivered with clinical precision." In March 2017, he became CEO of his new venture Recharge. The company is a unique combination of physical therapy, CrossFit and Mindfulness training. Incorporating three important elements of health under one roof with a focus on the customer experience and fun. Recharge is home to HoCo CrossFit which is also owned by Recharge. Dr. Gene is also an adjunct faculty member at University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Physical Therapy, which is also where he received his doctorate degree. When not focusing on growing his companies, he is chasing his son Aaron (5) and daughter Zoe (1) with the help of his wife Jaimie.     Resources discussed on this show: Women in Physical Therapy Summit Therapy Insiders Podcast Gene Shirokobrod twitter UpDoc Media   Thanks for listening and subscribing to the podcast! This week the Two Guys with PhDs review Seth's Palookaville #21 (Drawn and Quarterly) and The Fox #1, by Dean Haspiel and Mark Waid (Red Circle Comics). They begin by providing a primer on Palookaville and the 16-year run (so far) of the serialized Clyde Fans. They spend a good amount of time talking about the latest installment of Clyde Fans, part four, and then move on to the two overtly autobiographical sections of this issue of Palookaville: “Rubber Stamp Diary” and “Nothing Lasts, Part One.” Both Gene and Derek are fascinated with the very concept of the former, using specially designed rubber stamps to keep an illustrated diary. And they are bowled over by “Nothing Lasts,” a section from one of Seth's sketchbooks and a better story than most people's finished comics. Next they turn their critical eyes to Haspiel and Waid's The Fox, a new superhero title for Archie Comic's Red Circle imprint. (Yes, we know that The Comics Alternative doesn't focus on superhero comics, but this first issue is a notable and justifiable exception, especially since Dean Haspiel is a friend of Gene's.) They comment on the history of The Fox, beginning back in the 1940s, and then discuss how Haspiel and Waid revive the character for current times. What the Two Guys discover inadvertently are the thematic similarities between The Fox – Haspiel's critique of social and digital media — and Seth's emphasis on the past and older printed materials. All in all, it is a fun review show for Derek and Gene, and they both wholeheartedly recommend Palookaville #21 and The Fox #1 to everyone.

Both Gene and Stan will be honored at the national conference on Monday morning, October 28th. If you haven’t yet registered to attend the JNF national conference, we at Radio Chavura encourage you to do so today.  Simply visit JNF.org and click on the national conference logo.
