Adam Scott Bellos, an entrepreneur, political commentator, social media figure, and ardent Zionist joins People Jew Wanna Know Podcast to drop some hot takes on the current landscape for American Jews. Adam has grown on social media for his ardent criticisms of organizations like ADL and JNF, as well as criticisms of Jewish activists and influencers. His provocative and controversial commentary challenging the organizations and people who claim to protect us makes you wonder - but does he have a point? While Margarita does not agree on numerous things with Adam, this thought-provoking episode revisits the age old question: Are we Jews first and American second? The CEO of the embattled Jewish National Fund of Canada, Lance Davis, insists he is now “running a very tight ship” in the wake of the Canada Revenue Agency's recent decision to strip the historic Zionist fundraising organization of its charitable status. Davis, who became JNF Canada's CEO in 2017, maintains that many of the government's longstanding concerns had already been addressed in years past. In an interview with The CJN Daily, Davis blasted the CRA for deliberately choosing the harshest punishment for the venerated Zionist charity, which has sent more than $200 million to beautify Israel and help vulnerable people there. He also argues the CRA rushed to pull the trigger on its status too early, given how JNF's legal dispute is still before the courts. However, documents obtained by The Canadian Jewish News paint a more nuanced picture of why the CRA lost its patience after a decade of "major concerns" about "repeated and serious non-compliance” with Canada's Income Tax Act rules. As reported in The CJN's print feature that digs into the paperwork, the auditors quietly told the Jewish charity several times that it needed to clean up its act, and by 2019, JNF Canada knew Ottawa was moving to revoke. Yet the charity still got five more years to comply. Lance Davis joins The CJN Daily to explain JNF Canada's point of view, then we're joined once again by charity law expert Mark Blumberg who helps explain how the charity got to this point, what could have prevented this scenario and why the government stopped waiting. The official revocation notice of the Jewish National Fund of Canada's charity status, published in the Canada Gazette on Aug. 10, caught many by surprise—especially JNF officials themselves. Lance Davis, CEO of JNF Canada, says the venerable Jewish charity was “blindsided” by the Canada Revenue Agency's move because it came so quickly, despite efforts to negotiate a solution. It also came only two weeks after JNF Canada said that, if no deal was reached, it would appeal the government's “biased” findings to the Federal Court of Appeal. Experts say losing the charitable status means JNF Canada can no longer issue tax receipts for donations; it has one year to wind down business, dispose of all its financial assets or pay 100 percent tax on the millions in its accounts, and go out of business. JNF Canada says it is now going to apply for an immediate judicial review to stop the clock on what its spokespeople call Ottawa's “draconian” approach. Meanwhile opponents of the six-decade-old pro-Israel charity—including the NDP, the Green Party, Independent Jewish Voices and Just Peace Advocates—have been loudly proclaiming victory after years of complaints that the charity's Canadian donors have been funding projects in the West Bank and directly helping the IDF. (JNF Canada says they stopped doing this in 2016.) On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we ask if JNF Canada was a victim of politics—or the author of its own misfortune. Our guest is charity law expert Mark Blumberg. What we talked about Read why the CRA revoked the charitable status of the Jewish National Fund of Canada on Aug. 10, 2024. We have two interviews in this episode. First, I'll talk to Mondoweiss's Palestine News Director, Yumna Patel, about her new video report published today titled On The Brink: Jenin's rising resistance. Then we'll hear from Ahmad Abuznaid, the executive director of the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights, about their legal battle with the Jewish National Fund. First, to the Jenin refugee camp. On January 26 the Israeli army conducted a deadly invasion into the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. In the span of a few hours, the army shot and killed 9 Palestinians. A 10th Palestinian died a few days later from injuries sustained during the raid. It was one of the deadliest single invasions into the Jenin camp, and in the West Bank, in years. It came on the heels of a year-long effort by the Israeli military to quash the resurgence of Palestinian armed resistance. The Jenin refugee camp has a long history of armed resistance to Israel's occupation. Yumna traveled to Jenin just days after the deadly raid to speak to the people there and hear about what they experienced. Then, back to the United States. In 2019 the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and a group of American Israelis sued the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR) over its support for the nonviolent BDS movement. The US Campaign is a fiscal sponsor of the Boycott National Committee, which has ties to various groups in Palestine. According to the lawsuit, some of those groups are terrorist organizations responsible for fire bomb attacks on land owned by the Jewish National Fund in Israel. Activists say this is simply the latest attempt to suppress human rights work. Earlier this month Diala Shamas, a lawyer at the Center for Constitutional Rights and one of the attorneys representing the US Campaign, told The Guardian, “The goal here is to harass the US Campaign [for Palestinian Rights]. This is something that we're seeing more broadly: smearing human rights advocates with accusations of terrorism, and efforts to drag human rights advocates and protesters into court, into extended litigation that distracts them from their advocacy. In the Palestine context we see that happening a lot, both in the United States and by Israel." In 2021 the case was dismissed by a federal court in Washington DC, but the JNF appealed and it's now back in court. Mondoweiss's US correspondent Michael Arria spoke with US Campaign Executive Director Ahmad Abuznaid about the legal proceedings, the history of the JNF, and the wider context of this fight. - - - - - Support our work Help us continue our critical independent coverage of events in Palestine, Israel, and related U.S. politics. Today marks the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 al Qaeda terrorist attacks in the United States that killed 3,000 people and set off America's War on Terror. On the outskirts of Jerusalem is the only memorial outside of the United States that commemorates that event. This evening a ceremony was held there, attended by the US ambassador to Israel, dignitaries and top officials from Keren Kayemet L'Israel, the JNF which set up the memorial. Representing the JNF was David Borowich Yaari, director of the board of KKL. He told reporter Arieh O'Sullivan that commemorating 9/11 was also a message that when people make threats against Israel and Jews they have to be taken seriously and confronted. Jeff Yates nous explique le fonctionnement des jetons non fongibles et la genèse de l'épidémie de fraude dans ce marché.

Dear Curious Listener, every day in the UK, 18 people take their own life. The full picture of how the pandemic has affected this statistic is yet unknown. Collectively, we all seemed to have experienced a negative impact on our mental health however, not sure how to bridge the conversation on those who suffered so greatly that they died by taking their own life. That abyss between depression and suicide is a dangerous gap that has taken too many lives already, it's time to investigate it. Look into that abyss. While I prepared to walk 18 miles to raise money for the Joshua Nolan Foundation, I spoke to Laura Nolan, the founder of JNF, to understand more about the charity and her process in starting JNF after her son's suicide. Laura's vulnerability evoked necessary conversation around mental health and forced me to look in the mirror when it came to my own past, a journey documented in this episode... Jews are no strangers to the apocalypse. Having survived centuries of persecution and the biggest genocide in human history, generational trauma and fears of fatality come pretty naturally to us. Jay Baruchel is no exception. He's transformed those anxieties into a brand-new TV show, debuting Apr. 30 on Crave, called We're All Gonna Die (Even Jay Baruchel), in which he explores the myriad ways in which humanity can end, from nuclear disasters to alien invasions. For Yom ha-Shoah, Baruchel joins the program to chat about how his Jewish heritage helped inspire the show and take a stab at the ultimate post-apocalyptic question: what happens to us after we die? Plus, David lays out the latest development in the truly never-ending Israeli/Palestinian wine saga, Avi plays highlights from the JNF's recent Tech Shuk in Montreal, and Rabbi Joshua Corber discusses modern takeaways from Yom ha-Shoah. Today's episode highlights an incredible organization that is affiliated with JNF, Jewish National Fund, and yes, JNF doesn't fit our criteria of being under 10 million dollars, but the affiliate organization, The Lauder Employment Center, known as the LEC certainly does - I chose to not only highlight them for this episode, but ask you to please consider a donation for my April 1st./April Fool's birthday - my.jnf.org/laudercenter/Laurawittcoff Their mission is to diversify economic opportunities in Israel by providing career services through employee partnerships, training, resources, career counseling and actual internships that often turn into jobs for folks choosing to move to either the Southern or Northern part of Israel in order to reduce the overcrowding in the typical larger cities known as the triangle cities. Their current effort is to support the resettlement of Ukrainian refugees fleeing; donations are needed! THANK YOU!
Before there was a state of Israel, there was the Jewish National Fund. The JNF, or Keren Kayamet L'Yisrael in Hebrew, was founded in 1901 to buy land in Palestine for Jewish settlement. Today, most American Jews know the JNF for its tin tzedakah boxes and tree planting campaigns. But KKL-JNF owns 13% of the land in Israel — which it allocates exclusively to Jews — and has been involved in evicting Palestinians in the Negev, East Jerusalem, and the West Bank. This episode was produced by Ilana Levinson. Music by Nat Rosenzweig and Blue Dot Sessions.
For decades, the Jewish National Fund has been creating connections between Jews and the land of Israel. In these challenging times, when Israel is under more pressure to justify is existence than ever before, JNF is changing the conversation and making a massive impact on the next 100 years of Jewish and non-Jewish life in Israel. In this episode, Rabbi Pont is joined by Russell Robinson, CEO of JNF USA, whose infectious passion for Israel will inspire all of us to get involved.

Israel's government passed a law to legalize more than a hundred thousand illegal Arab Bedouin structures in the Negev Desert and hook them up to electricity. At the same time, Israel is cracking down on Jewish settlement in Judea and Samaria. Homesh, where Yehuda Dimentman was murdered several weeks ago, is currently in process of being destroyed. JNF, who has been planting trees in Israel for more than a hundred years, tried to plant trees in the Negev recently and the Arabs rioted. Mansour Abbas, leader of the Arab party in the government, pushed for the tree planting to stop, and Israel caved to the pressure. Israel's un-unified government is facing pressures from within themselves, and from the international community. How long will they hold up?

For the past year, as the coronavirus pandemic spread across the world, home has become an especially important source of shelter and safety. While some governments have responded to pressure from activists and paused evictions, Palestinians in East Jerusalem still face uncertainty. That’s the case with the Sumarin family, who live just outside Jerusalem’s Old City in the Palestinian village of Silwan. The Jewish National Fund and the Elad organization have long been promoting Jewish settlement in the area — often at the expense of the Palestinian residents. In April, after a decades-long legal battle, an Israeli court will finally decide whether the Sumarin family will be forcibly evicted from their home. Often in politically progressive spaces, Zionists are asked to leave their pro-Israel politics at the door, or else face exclusion and be branded as racists. Amanda Berman, the founder and executive director of the Zioness Movement, is aiming to address this problem by empowering and activating Zionists on the progressive left to stand proudly in social justice spaces as Jews and Zionists. In this episode, our podcast host and B'nai B'rith International CEO Daniel S. Mariaschin talks with Berman about the work of the Zioness Movement and the main challenges ahead for her organization. Until she recently made the transition to focusing exclusively on building the much-needed Zioness community, Berman was also a civil rights attorney fighting anti-Semitism legally, spearheading such groundbreaking initiatives as the international action against Kuwait Airways for its discrimination against Israeli nationals, and the dual cases against San Francisco State University for its constitutional and civil rights violations against Jewish and Israeli students and community members. The Jewish National Fund is an international charity with branches around the world, including Canada. The organization describes its work on its website this way: “For decades the Jewish National Fund of Canada has cared for the land of Israel. This mission took the role of planting trees, building water reservoirs, preserving natural habitats, and building parks and bicycle trails. More recently, JNF Canada has taken on projects to build the social infrastructure of the land of Israel for the benefit of the People of Israel.” Critics say that its activities are not all benevolent. Today's guest is one of them. David Mivasair is a rabbi living in Hamilton, Ontario. In an email to rabble radio, David said “I am writing to people I know in Canada to ask you to please sign this formal, legal petition to Canada's Minister of National Revenue to revoke the charitable status of the Jewish National Fund Canada, if it is audited and determined to be in violation of Canada's Income Tax Act and foreign policy, as I am thoroughly convinced it is.” He listed a number of reasons, including (in his own words): 1) The JNF is dedicated to acquiring and providing land for Jews. It excludes Palestinians and other non-Jews. It outright owns 16% of the land in Israel and controls the management of about 90% of all land in Israel. It violates the provision in the Canada Tax Act that stipulates that a charitable organization must provide a “public good”, which means does not discriminate on the basis of ethnic identity. 2) The JNF uses charitable donations from Canada to support projects and programs in coordination with the Israel Defense Forces. Charitable organizations are not allowed to support foreign militaries. 3) The JNF funds projects in Israel which displace Palestinians from their homes, demolish villages, build on their sites and otherwise make physical changes in a militarily occupied territory. This violates international law and Canadian foreign policy. He talks to rabble podcast executive producer Victoria Fenner about the petition which he has launched. At posting time, it has been supported by approximately 1800 Canadians, including NDP MP Niki Ashton and Pierre-Luc Dusseault. You can find out more by going to the Stop the JNF Canada website. Brendan interviews Rabbi David Mivasair about recent developments in the campaign by Independent Jewish Voices and other concerned parties to end the tax exempt status for the "Jewish National Fund." The JNF is an Israeli tool for the dispossession of Palestinians. It has been used to erase Palestinian settlements, in one case replacing villages with "Canada Park." Use of occupied land for one ethnicity only contravenes international law, and Canadian domestic law. The JNF has also been implicated in funding Israeli armed forces projects, something which a Canadian charity cannot do.

A conversation with JNF head Russell Robinson on planting new seeds of life in the holy land. By 2007, the JNF owned 13% of the total land in Israel. Since its inception, it has planted over 240 million trees in Israel. It has also built 180 dams and reservoirs, developed 250,000 acres of land and established more than 1,000 parks. This week on Unorthodox, boy are we grateful. We're grateful for our gentile of the week, Shay Khatiri, the Iranian-born political refugee who raised more than $1 million for the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh following the Oct. 27 massacre. He set up a GoFundMe page, which quickly went viral, and the campaign has so far raised $1.2 million, which will go directly into the synagogue's bank account. He also tells us about being blacklisted by the Iranian government after signing a 2016 letter urging President Trump to impose sanctions on the country, disappointing his mother by not becoming a doctor, and the asylum trial that awaits him in order for him to stay in the U.S. And we are triply grateful for our Jewish guest, bestselling author A.J. Jacobs, who returns to the show for the third time! (Don't miss his first and second visits.) He tells us about his new book, Thanks a Thousand: a Gratitude Journey, in which he thanked every single person responsible for his morning cup of coffee—from the barista at his local coffee shop to the coffee farmers in South America. He tells us why gratitude is a deeply Jewish value, and offers advice on how we can all embrace our Mr. Rogers side instead of our Larry David side. They were also joined by Russell Robinson, CEO of the JNF to discuss the important work the JNF does in Israel and how we can get involved.
In 1998, Russell became the youngest CEO in JNF's history. He works tirelessly, traveling around the country and visiting Israel almost every month, to ensure JNF's vision is more relevant and meaningful today than ever before. Today, more than 110 years after it was founded, JNF gives all generations of Jews a unique voice in building and ensuring the prosperity of the land of Israel through their generosity and partnership with the people of Israel. Jewish National Fund is a leader in environmental activism, Zionist education, sustainable community development in the Negev and Galilee, the protection of historical landmarks, and water resource development. No other organization makes a greater impact on the land and the people of Israel. Under Russell's direction, JNF is one of the most recognized non-profits for its work, cultivation of a younger donor population, business management, financial integrity and volunteer involvement. Russell is featured in the best selling management book, “The 24 hour Turnaround, How Amazing Entrepreneurs Succeed in Tough Times.” Russell is a sixth generation American Jew. His family first laid down its American roots in Petersburg, Virginia after emigrating from Alsace Lorraine in the late 1700's.
On this week’s edition of Radio Chavura, we feature exclusive interviews with two Denverites who will be active participants in the upcoming JNF National Conference, scheduled to be held here in Colorado from October 25th through October 28th. Our first guest is noted historian Jeanne Abrams. Dr. Abrams – author of the newly published book, Revolutionary Medicine: The Founding Fathers in Sickness and health – will lead an afternoon session on Sunday the 27th, during which she’ll share the amazing and at times harrowing tales of Colorado’s early Jewish Settlers. After Jeanne, we talk about the Jewish National Fund with Gene Kay, board chair of the JNF’s Rocky Mountain Region. Gene, along with Stanley Kamlet, are well-known throughout the United States for their tireless work on behalf of the Jewish National Fund. Both Gene and Stan will be honored at the national conference on Monday morning, October 28th. If you haven’t yet registered to attend the JNF national conference, we at Radio Chavura encourage you to do so today. Simply visit JNF.org and click on the national conference logo. The JNF Conference, like the JNF itself, is a chance to give of yourself and discover how much personal satisfaction you will reap in return. The national edition of Radio Chavura is intended to build support for the Jewish National Fund conference to be held in Denver from October 25th through October 28th. The conference will bring together hundreds of committed Jewish leaders from across the United States to learn about JNF's ongoing work on behalf of the land and people of Israel. Those attending will also have the opportunity to meet and interact with committed volunteers of all ages, as well as to contribute their own ideas for enriching the work of JNF. Russell F. Robinson, JNF's CEO and a member of its global board of directors, is the featured guest on this inaugural national edition of Radio Chavura. Robinson divulges that at this year's national conference, JNF will formally announce an unprecedented 10-year, $1 billion fundraising campaign, that he says will be "the most innovative, most bold campaign" even untaken by a Jewish organization. "Colorado has a flourishing and vibrant Jewish community which couldn't be more excited to welcome the JNF national conference," says Maxwell Rotbart, co-host of Radio Chavura. Rotbart notes that the Colorado Jewish community, which predates statehood in 1876, gave rise to the United Way and helped inspire Golda Meir's Zionism during her sojourn in Denver as a high schooler. Well-known global brands that have Jewish roots in Colorado, include Samsonite Luggage, Hot Pockets, and perhaps most famous of all, the Barbie doll. (Inventor Ruth Mosko Handler was born and raised in Denver.) Today, Colorado is an incubator of many cutting edge companies in the technology and health sectors, serving as the global headquarters of the Society of Physician Entrepreneurs, which educates and connects biomedical and health innovators who seek to commercialize their ideas, inventions and discoveries. Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, who recently returned from an inspiring visit to Israel, will be the JNF conference's opening speaker on Friday, October 25th. Other Coloradans scheduled to participate in the program include Rabbi Joe R. Black, spiritual leader of Temple Emanuel; Jerome "Jerry" Tinianow, chief sustainability officer for the City of Denver; and Dr. Jeanne Abrams, an historian and professor at the University of Denver. At the breakfast and closing plenary on Monday, October 28th, Ken Salazar, former Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior and a former U.S. Senator from Colorado, will be the speaker. During the breakfast, longtime JNF lay leaders, Eugene "Gene" Kay and Stanley Kamlet will be honored for their years of service. Come October 25, 2013, the eyes of the Jewish world will be focused on Denver, as the Mile High City hosts the annual Jewish National Fund national conference. JNF, which is also known by the initials KKL (for its Hebrew name - Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael), is one of the largest and most prominent Israeli environmental groups, tracing its origins back to the days of Theodor Herzl and the Zionist Congresses (during which time it was tasked with buying land in Israel). Today, JNF is mostly often associated with reforestation efforts in Israel (planting 250 million trees in the last 100 years). But JNF is also deeply involved with other missions crucial to Israel and its people. Boaz Meir, the recently-appointed director of JNF's Mountain States region (encompassing Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho), joins us in the studio to discuss what JNF looks like today; the work of its Mountain States regional office; and what we can expect at the national conference this October. One of the most exciting endeavors that Boaz discusses with us is the work that the Mountain States office is doing to lend its support to JNF's campaign to populate the desert regions of Israel. This week's show is the final episode of our first season. We began broadcasting Radio Chavura on Sunday, July 1, 2012. Our program airs weekly on 990 KRKS AM. For more information on JNF, contact Boaz and the Mountain States offices of JNF at 303-573-7095. Radio Chavura is co-hosted Maxwell Rotbart and his father, Dean – both homegrown members of the Denver Jewish community. The program is broadcast each Sunday at 6:30 pm on 990 KRKS AM in Denver. Do you want to suggest a potential guest for the show or learn how to become a sponsor? Call Dean & Maxwell at 1-855-JEWISH-4 or email them at radiochavura@gmail.com.
