Voices of Leadership: Insights and Inspirations from Women Leaders
Today, we're joined by an individual whose roots in our community run as deep as her impact: Joan Fisk. This past May, Joan was the recipient of the 025 Oktoberfest Women of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award. Joan is a powerhouse leader. Her incredible career began right here at her family's business, the Tiger Brand Knitting Company. It's a place that holds a surprising bit of fashion history; if you wore a Cotton Ginny or Beaver Canoe t-shirt in the '80s, you were likely wearing a piece of Joan's legacy. As the current CEO of the United Way, Joan is now focused on strengthening the fabric of our community. I was curious to have this conversation because, like most people I know, I understand what the United Way is and I can recognize its logo, but I didn't fully understand its unique funding model and the many ways it can help a community.Joan explains it as this: United Way is a little bit from a lot of people to make a difference for people that you don't even know.Links and ResourcesJoan's LinkedInThe United WayConnect With UsVoices of Leadership PodcastInstagramLinkedInBespoke Productions WebsiteBespoke Productions Instagram

What does gender representation in economics really look like today—and why does it matter? In this episode of Talk That Science, we're joined by Kaneta Zillur, Head of Research at the Women in Economics Initiative (WiE), to explore the state of gender equality across academia, the private sector, and public institutions. Kaneta introduces us to the Women Economics Index, a tool that tracks female leadership globally, and unpacks this year's spotlight on African economists. We discuss how the Index is built, what the numbers reveal (including it's surprising trends in Africa and the private sector), and why representation in leadership is so crucial for shaping policy, business, and the next generation of economists. Kaneta shares insights on the barriers women face, from the “leaky pipeline” to financial and caregiving pressures, and highlights the importance of mentorship and intersectional approaches—including amplifying voices from the Global South and addressing gaps in Asian data. Tune in for a deep dive into the challenges and progress of breaking up the glass ceiling in economics! Tracks played during the episode include: Tomar Ghorey - Anusheh Anadil Anxiety - Doechii No Hands - Joy Crookes Woman (Feat.

From Burnout to Boundaries: Redefining Female Leadership in Private EducationIn this deeply honest and emotionally resonant episode, Chanie Wilschanski invites female school leaders into a transformative conversation about the “impossible standard” of leadership in education. She explores the emotional labor women carry, how over-functioning and people-pleasing lead to burnout, and why leading with warmth shouldn't come at the cost of boundaries or energy. Chanie offers practical strategies—and powerful mindset shifts—to help leaders reclaim their authority and redefine what it means to lead well. What You'll LearnThe impact of emotional exhaustion and over-functioning on female school leadersThe “double-bind” dilemma: being warm vs. being decisiveWhy noticing feels like a leadership burden—and how to distribute itHow rescuing becomes reactive leadership disguised as delegationThe importance of identity work, not just strategy, to break burnout cyclesHow to create rhythms, boundaries, and systems that protect your warmthSimple journaling prompts to rethink your leadership postureKey Insights1. Emotional Labor HurtsWomen in school leadership hold not only logistical responsibility but also the emotional pulse of the building—staff, parents, students. This leads to heightened emotional exhaustion compared to male counterparts.2. Warming Doesn't Mean WeaknessHormonal responses like “tend-and-befriend” push women to soothe and rescue rather than set boundaries and enforce standards. Warmth is powerful… until it becomes draining without structure.3. Rescue ≠ DelegationBringing in supplies or stepping in during a lesson might feel supportive—but if not shared, it's rescuing. True leadership distributes responsibility and builds capacity.4. “Noticing” Is the Hidden LoadYou see the trash that won't get emptied, the subtle shift in energy… and you carry it. That invisible “20%” needs leadership, not martyrdom. Build systems so teams learn to see.5. Boundaries Honor the MissionWarmth becomes weaponized when it's the only way you've learned to lead. When boundaries are in place, you're not being cold—you're protecting your mission from burnout.6. Identity Shifts MatterYour strategy is useless if your identity isn't aligned. If “rescue leader” stays in your identity, you'll recreate burnout cycles—even with perfect systems.Memorable Quotes“You were meant to build a school that holds you.” – Chanie Wilschanski“Excellence is built through rhythm, not martyrdom.” – Chanie WilschanskiWhy It Matters for School LeadersReclaim your authority and energyBuild team culture around shared responsibility, not dependencePrevent burnout through healthy boundaries and accountability systemsShift mental load so your presence enhances, not depletes, the communityResources & Lead MagnetExplore Leadership HQ coaching for ongoing support - schoolsofexcellence.com/consultSubscribe for future episodes on leadership rhythms, emotional clarity, and strategic systemsAbout Chanie Wilschanski & Schools of ExcellenceChanie Wilschanski leads Schools of Excellence with a passion for cultivating soulful, effective leadership through intentional rhythms. Career success takes a status boost, not a power grab. How do you chart the career course you've always imagined? According to Alison Fragale, it's about gaining influence through status, power, and ultimately, being “a likeable badass.”As a research psychologist, professor, speaker, and author, Fragale is on a mission to help women take control of their careers. In her book Likeable Badass: How Women Get the Success They Deserve, she argues that most people have it backwards when pursuing career advancement. "We have talked for a long time [about] getting more power," she explains. However, by focusing first on achieving status (how respected we are), power will often come as a natural byproduct. "If you pursue status before, or at least alongside power, everything is going to fall into place," she says. “Status makes power a lot easier to achieve, and it makes power a lot easier to use.”In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, hosted by executive producer Jenny Luna, Fragale explores the communication strategies of a likeable badass, from building warmth and assertiveness to authentically connecting with colleagues. Whether you're building relationships in a new company or have been leading one for years, Fragale's insights will help you command respect while communicating with kindness. To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premiumEpisode Reference Links:Alison FragaleAlison's Book: Likeable BadassJenny LunaEp.12 It's Not What You Say, It's How You Say It: How To Communicate PowerEp.15 The Art of Negotiation: How to Get More of What You Want Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:21) - Defining Power and Status (05:26) - Why Status Comes Before Power (06:19) - Communication Techniques to Build Status (09:27) - Evaluating Your Habits: Nonverbal and Verbal Cues (11:21) - Mentorship in Developing Communication (13:13) - Adapting to a New Work Culture (18:41) - Representing Difference Without Distance (19:49) - Overcoming Bad First Impressions (21:47) - The Final Three Question (25:32) - Conclusion *****This episode is brought to you by Babbel. In this bold and honest episode, Amy welcomes executive coach and author Marcy Moriconi to unpack the real message behind her book My Boss Is a Bitch: Changing the Paradigm of Female Leadership. Together, they unpack the invisible expectations placed on women in leadership, the unspoken patterns we inherit from outdated systems, and the real emotional toll of navigating power as a woman. I couldn't help myself. I mean, how American can you be? In fact, I do what I can when travelling to absorb culture and not compare to the American lifestyle. But I had to ask "Is the Chinese food in China the same as it is in the states?" The answer....listen to the podcast! I was completely taken by Emilie...She brings warmth to her perspective but at the same time, taking a firm position that is rooted in vast experience and educated conjecture. Emilie Steckenborn makes a living where most of us can only dream—at the intersection of wine, culture, and cutting-edge business in China's ever-evolving market. But don't let her youthful charm and “very strong Chinese accent” (as Paul jokes) fool you. Emilie is a polyglot insider who's spent over a decade breaking barriers in Shanghai, consulting for both airlines and luxury giants like LVMH, and unraveling the intricacies of food, wine, and social connection in the world's most populous country. You will come away from this episode with a front-row seat to Emilie's striking journey from Toronto to Asia's fine wine circles, and you'll learn how Western and Chinese culinary myths feed both perceptions and markets. She'll shed light on why most "Chinese food" in North America bears little resemblance to dishes in Beijing or Guangzhou, how social media platforms like Xiaohongshu change what's in your glass and on your plate, and why the Chinese DTC (direct-to-consumer) model leaves American wine buyers in the dust. You'll also get a candid look at the role of women in China's wine scene, why brand is king (or queen) from Yellowtail to Lafite, how fake wine scams erupt and vanish, and what it really takes to build—and protect—a luxury wine label in one of the world's most challenging markets. Emilie's passion for connection glues it all together, whether she's navigating bottles at 50-table banquets or forging authentic stories through her own "Bottled in China" podcast. Expect to leave with a new appreciation for the complexities of selling, sharing, and savoring wine across cultures—and the secrets behind the conversations that only a great glass can unlock. ✅ Ever wondered how wine, culture, and business blend together in China's booming scene? ✅ Host Paul Kalemkiarian sits down with Emilie Steckenborn—wine industry leader, podcast host, and all-around trailblazer—for a globe-spanning conversation you won't forget. ✅ From myth-busting Chinese cuisine to insider stories on luxury wine brands, social media's impact, and the secret sauce behind wine's magic, Wine Talks uncorks big ideas and bigger stories. ✅ Discover why wine isn't just a drink, but a bridge for connection and innovation—and why the next “aha moment” in your own wine journey might be just one sip away.
