Rhode Island's capital city, Providence, is overwhelmingly Democratic. But that doesn't mean the city is beyond reach of the sweeping changes in government being promoted by President Donald Trump and his supporters. Even under the best of circumstances, Providence struggles to generate enough revenue to pay for city government. And despite decades of talk about the need to improve Providence schools, that goal remains elusive. The man responsible for taking on these challenges is Providence Mayor Brett Smiley. He emphasized a so-called back to basics approach when he won election in 2022. But what can Providence do if cuts in Washington, DC, have a big local impact? Does Smiley have a real plan for improving city schools? And what does the first-term mayor think Democrats need to do to raise their national appeal? This week on Political Roundtable, I'm going in-depth with the mayor of Providence, Brett Smiley.

Send us a textBill Bartholomew discusses the pop-up homeless shelters at Providence City Hall and The DaVinci Center, which were organized by Councilors Miguel Sanchez and Justin Roias. The centers drew the ire of Providence mayor Brett Smiley, however, given an apparent need for additional shelter space, particularly acute during the current extreme cold, the defiant nature of the shelters represent what Bartholomew calls a "punk rock, DIY approach... something that has historically informed officialdom about reimagining their own approach and practices".Support the show

As ever, the accolades go to our benevolent sponsors Optimove and Clarion Gaming. We love you in a big, real kinda way. Thankfully this episode's intro is considerably less fanciful than last; Jon has new neighbours, and some hedgehogs have had a dodgy meal in his back garden [0:00 – 14:07]. Then our hosts are joined by Brett Smiley, Chief Content Officer of CasinoReports.com, a publication focused on comprehensively covering the US iGaming industry. They aim to offer quality journalism and unique perspectives in a crowded marketplace. Brett brings us up to date on some of what's going on in the US right now, including the current legislative season, with Maryland and Maine failing to legalize casinos. How the industry is facing negative blowback from scandals and oversaturation of advertising is discussed too, then tangents might be gone off on, including Jon's experiences working at QVC in the early 2000s. Online drunk shopping mishaps also come up [14:08 – 1:10:03]. In a nutshell: CasinoReports.com aims to provide quality journalism and unique perspectives in the crowded US iGaming and online casino industry. The current legislative season has not resulted in any wins for the industry, with Maryland and Maine failing to legalize casinos. The industry is facing negative blowback from scandals and oversaturation of advertisements. There is still potential for growth and opportunities for independent media outlets to provide in-depth reporting and differentiate themselves. Online shopping can lead to unexpected purchases and regrets. This podcast is presented by Optimove, which is used by 56% of the EGR Power50 to personalize player experiences. Providence is the business, political and cultural capital for the state. But it faces some of the same hurdles as other cities, including the question of how to maintain a vibrant downtown when more of the people who used to fill offices are now working remotely. After decades of talk about the importance of public education, is there a plan for improving Providence schools when the city regains control of them from the state in the next year or two? Our guest for Political Roundtable this week is Providence Mayor Brett Smiley.

Brett Smiley has benefited by presenting a fresh face as the mayor of Providence. But the city's underlying fiscal challenges are never far from the surface. Smiley's first budget proposed raising residential taxes by 5 percent. Conventional wisdom holds that the first year of a new administration is the time to raise taxes. But Rhode Island's capital city faces other challenges, including the slowdown on development caused by high interest rates.
