On Tuesday, President Trump unleashed an angry tirade in which he threatened to stop doling out food stamp payments until Democrats capitulate in the government shutdown. He seethed over “crooked Joe Biden” and made up stuff about food stamp fraud. Coming after a judge ordered payments to continue, Trump's threat seemed to suggest he's now directly defying the courts. But then White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt quickly clarified that Trump will obey the law, after all. Given that Trump intended his threat as a dominance display over Democrats, Leavitt undercut him, because she had no choice. We think this shows Trump's team knows they cannot be seen as breaking the law to deny food to the hungry. We talked to David Dayen, executive editor of The American Prospect, who has a good piece arguing that Trump has lost the shutdown. He demystifies the food stamp battle, explains why Trump's terrible standing on the economy has made him vulnerable in the standoff, and discusses how this all shows that Democrats need to get in the fight and engage. On a flight back from Las Vegas, I found myself sitting next to a man that decided to watch Fox News on his monitor while also streaming conservative media on his phone. During this time, I couldn't help but pay attention to the parade of lies I saw on both screens, even without audio. It was obvious that this passenger was so far gone that he couldn't function without conservative media being constantly pumped into his brain, and this made me come to unfortunate conclusions. In an interview that was published this week, Marjorie Taylor Greene admitted that Republicans are going to lose the midterms next year, and the thought of actually gaining any seats is now a distant memory. Greene is continuing her assault on her own Party, but her hatred of her own side aside, she actually has a good point that is rooted in all of the available data - an unusual coincidence for her.ICE was gifted an additional $170 billion from the "One Big Beautiful Bill" this summer, and they have already gone on a massive spending spree. The spending is mainly focused on weapons, but they aren't just settling for routine cop gear - The agency has gone all out buying military weapons that include "guided missile warheads." ICE is not supposed to be attacking anyone, as their job is to apprehend and detain, but they are clearly aiming to become an extension of Donald Trump's domestic warfare. Alina Habba is still fighting to keep her job as the temporary US Attorney for New Jersey, and the courts in New Jersey heard her appeal on Monday. There is a lot riding on her success or failure with this case because it could determine whether all of Trump's political prosecutions get immediately thrown out. The prosecutor in Virginia, Lindsey Halligan, is serving under the same circumstances as Habba - so if Habba can't prosecute then neither can Halligan. It was only a month ago that nearly every conservative pundit and politician was sounding the alarm about the so-called violent and hateful rhetoric from the Left. But they clearly have forgotten how much they hate the meanness, because Karoline Leavitt recently decided to go full fascist during an attack on every Democrat in the country. A-BLOCK (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: TRUMP SUDDENLY SPECULATES ABOUT LIFE WITHOUT HIM: From anybody else it would be trivia. From Trump this is startling. Buried in an ordinary narcissistic flight: "It'll be very unfair in the future when they (Republicans) don't have Trump to fight for them." That quote, might be the biggest headline Trump has made this year and it sailed RIGHT past the American news media yesterday. What in the HELL did he mean by that and more importantly why did he suddenly acknowledge there is an end, maybe soon? After being MIA for five days – no live public viewing of him, just one video that according to White House time stamps took more than two hours to produce even though it only required him to try to speak for a minute-ten… he EMERGED with what was, even for him, such an utterly bizarre and especially vulnerable admission. He was out of view for FIVE DAYS. FIVE. From that bizarre “please clap” speech before the Generals at Quantico on Tuesday – the Pete Hegseth International Day of Military Hair Care Symposium and Product Sampling – through yesterday morning when he managed to stagger out of the White House, blast a series of non sequitirs at the press pool, and then go to another military celebration for which we have the money even in the middle of his shutdown of the government. Nobody asked: HOW have you been, WHERE have you been, WHAT are they treating you for, WHAT does that "when they don't have (you) to fight for them" quote mean? Because again, as in the week he went MIA at the beginning of LAST month, nobody had a clue what would take a man with compulsive talking disease and an ego so large it has own it zip code, from appearing in front of crowds and cameras for FIVE DAYS. And THEN Trump went in front of the Navy and said he warned about Osama Bin Laden last year, and told Pete Hegseth about it a year before 9/11, and claimed he was president in 2016 but they fixed the 2016 election, but they ran it again and he "got 250." What. In The Hell. Is Wrong. With Trump’s Health? B-Block (27:44) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: A $1 Trump coin? Ten cents per chin? Ian Miles Cheong doesn't think they'll eat his face. Things are not okay in the White House. Numerous new national polls show President Trump and the GOP taking far more blame for the government shutdown than Democrats. One polling analyst flatly declared that the gap has reached double digits. Meanwhile, at a media briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt twice lost her temper under tough questioning. Notably, what angered her was the spectacle of reporters punching holes in the leading White House arguments in the shutdown standoff. Why is this happening, given that many pundits predicted Democrats are in the weaker position? We talked to Salon's Amanda Marcotte, a sharp observer of MAGA follies. She explains why the Trump-GOP talking points are failing, why Democrats have fresh incentives to hold firm, and what all this reveals about the deepening fissures in the Trump coalition.
