Stones and Bones Ep. 6 - The Magnificent Seven

History Goes Bump Podcast

At the same time that the rural garden movement was launching and thriving in Victorian America, the Magnificent Seven were being established in London. The founding of these seven cemeteries was an effort to establish private cemeteries outside of London to alleviate the overcrowding in the city's churchyards. Small parish churchyards had provided burial space for hundreds of years, but with a burgeoning London population, burial space was shrinking and citizens were becoming worried about the unhealthy conditions. These new suburban cemeteries would be Kensal Green Cemetery, West Norwood Cemetery, Highgate Cemetery, Abney Park Cemetery, Brompton Cemetery, Nunhead Cemetery, and Tower Hamlets Cemetery. These cemeteries wouldn't get their nickname until 1981 and the name came from architectural historian Hugh Meller who was inspired by the 1960 western film "The Magnificent Seven."  Intro and Outro music "Stones and Bones" was written and produced by History Goes Bump and any use is strictly prohibited. Sir Arthur Sullivan became the most renowned composer of the Victorian era, with his fame spreading across Europe and America too. His output spanned many genres including oratorios, a symphony, chamber music, hymns and anthems, but it was for his collaboration with the librettist W. S. Gilbert on operetta's that he is best remembered today. He was a personal friend to royalty, and he was knighted when he was in his early forties. He also had a liking for playing cards, buying race horses and gambling, frequently loosing the substantial earnings from the stage works he'd composed. Sullivan became a pillar of the British musical establishment, so that when he died, despite wanting to be buried with his family in Brompton Cemetery, he was laid to rest in the crypt of St Paul's Cathedral, with an additional service at the Chapel Royal in St. James's Palace. UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES with bestselling author and researcher Steph Young

To an old and ornate cemetery now, and ‘Is the secret to time travel lurking in an old London Cemetery?’ asked Helen Smith in the Daily News of October the 29th 1998. You see, there is a story that deep within the Brompton Cemetery in London is a time machine for teleportation or time travel. It sounds an extraordinary claim and there is much intriguing mystery to this story. This portal to another world is said to be within the Egyptian mausoleum of a spinster named Miss H. Courtoy and her daughters… Tales of Mystery Unexplained

“IS THIS MAUSOLEUM A TIME PORTAL?” and More True, Scary, Paranormal Stories! #WeirdDarkness IN THIS EPISODE: Elva Heaster was dead – but that didn’t stop her ghost from solving the murder. In Stephen King’s “Pet Semetery”, beloved family pets could come back from the dead; in Washington there is a hole that some say brings animals back to life – for real. In the middle of the Brompton Cemetery grounds, shrouded by trees stands a mausoleum… and what some believe is a time machine. The Mothman is apparently no longer bound to Point Pleasant, West Virginia – in 2017 he appeared 55 times in Chicago. Plus another entry into my Dark Chapters series where I narrate an entire chapter of a horror novel or paranormal book. Here we are for episode 196! This one has also been brewing for quite some time - in fact I started work on it when we last visited Brompton Cemetery in early 2017 and then recorded scenes with a number of guests throughout the year and into 2018; finally I'm ready to release it! Thank you to all my special guests for this episode - Toby, Alena, Toppie Smellie, Nick Goodman - with additional thanks to Big Fatty for allowing me to use clips from the pilot episode of Big Fatty Online. Special thanks should also go to Paul H and The Odstock Players - as recorded back in 1984 during a production of "Joshua Scamp - The Musical!" Our next episode, number 197 is all about what happens when Paul finally gets to meet a long lost relative named Algernon! How ever will Yeti Uncle John react!? Do join us, won't you?! Please email me at shyyeti@yahoo.co.uk if you have any comments - you can even send me a sound-file and I'll include it on the show. The music is by Shy Yeti and Luca. Sound effects by Paul Chandler. All content of this episode is Copyright Paul Chandler, 2018 except for clips from the BFO.  Episode 196 was recorded between the 25th February 2017 and the 14th September 2018.

Chelsea Supporters' Trust held their second Special General Meeting of the season after the Swansea City match. The SGMs are a good chance to report back to the membership, in person on progress with the issues we are mandated to pursue and have a face to face dialogue with the members. Held in a venue new to us, The Lillie Langtry Pub we were well looked after and a decent turnout from the membership were updated on issues such as the Membership Survey and the move to a Temporary Stadium. In addition, board members reported back on initiatives such as 'Kick-Off Times'; the Stamford Bridge Redevelopment; work on improving the atmosphere at the Bridge; work with Supporters Direct, The Football Supporters Federation and with fellow Premier League Trusts and work with the Overseas Membership. Cliff Auger formerly announced our work towards the commemoration of 'Founder's Day' at the Brompton Cemetery and our continued work helping to clean up Chelsea related graves at the cemetery.
