Cone-iving snails might look innocent, but their venom-packed tongues can leave a nasty sting. Then there's the vampire fish - not your typical underwater buddy with those razor-sharp teeth and saliva full of anticoagulants. Hagfish are like the stuff of nightmares, and their slimy secretions can clog up your gills if you're not careful. Don't be fooled by the cute name - cookie cutter killers might take a bite out of you when you least expect it. And finally, man's best friend - dogs. While most are harmless, some carry bacteria in their mouths that can lead to infections if they break your skin. So, it's best to play it safe and keep your distance from these tongue-wielding creatures! Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for January 18, 2025 is: minuscule MIN-uh-skyool adjective Something described as minuscule is very small. Minuscule can also mean "written in, or in the size or style of, lowercase letters," in which case it can be contrasted with majuscular. // The number of bugs in the latest version of the video game is minuscule compared to the number that surfaced in the beta version. // The ancient manuscripts on display are all in minuscule script. See the entry > Examples: "Resembling a stout field mouse, B. brevicauda is a tiny burrowing mammal with inconspicuous ears and minuscule eyes well hidden behind a long narrow snout." — Bill Schutt, Bite: An Incisive History of Teeth, from Hagfish to Humans, 2024 Did you know? Minuscule comes from the Latin adjective minusculus ("somewhat smaller" or "fairly small"), which in turn pairs the base of minus ("smaller") with -culus, a diminutive suffix (that is, one indicating small size). The minuscule spelling is consistent with the word's etymology, but that didn't stop English speakers from adopting the variant spelling miniscule, likely because they associated it with the combining form mini- and such words as minimal and minimum. Usage commentators generally consider the miniscule spelling an error, but it is widely used in reputable and carefully edited publications, and is accepted as a legitimate variant in some dictionaries. (Our own dictionary identifies miniscule as a "disputed spelling variant.")

A tooth is not simply a tooth, as zoologist Bill Schutt writes in his new book, Bite: An Incisive History of Teeth, from Hagfish to Humans. Teeth first showed up among vertebrates some 500 million years ago, and ever since, they've had much to do with the survival of many species. There are teeth that sharpen themselves with every snap (as with dogs and wolves), teeth that grow forever (as the poor babirusa knows all too well), and teeth that grow in a conveyer belt (ask a crocodile, but don't get too close). The shape and appearance of teeth can tell us a lot about how animals evolved—and in the case of humans, where we stand on the social ladder. And there's much more still to be learned, both about past life on this planet and future innovations in dentistry. Bill Schutt, a vertebrate zoologist and retired biology preofssor, is a research associate at the American Museum of Natural history, and he joins us today from New York. Zoologist Bill Schutt argues that teeth were pivotal to the success of vertebrate animals, they're power tools for survival. His latest book is "Bite: An Incisive History of Teeth, from Hagfish to Humans." On this podcast extra, Schutt explains why teeth are key to understanding evolution; the controversy over fluoride in water; and why people once thought decay was caused by tooth worms.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Your teeth don't just chew your food—they connect you to the deepest of deep history on Earth. Teeth have existed, in some form, for half a billion years, making them more than 250 million years older than dinosaurs. They came before the evolution of warm bloodedness, eggs, and even limbs. From that very first set of chompers emerged a bewildering and diverse group of teeth, including narwhal tusks, sharks' pearly teeth, snake fangs, and, of course, ours. Now teeth are the subject of a new book called Bite: An Incisive History of Teeth from Hagfish to Humans. Guest host Maggie Koerth talks with zoologist and author Dr. Bill Schutt about how teeth evolved, why they're so neat, and what we can learn from studying them.Read an excerpt of Bite: An Incisive History of Teeth from Hagfish to Humans.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Doni Blair is the kind of lifer that isn't content to just sit around between tours and wait for the call. He likes to get his ass kicked. Literally. You probably know him as the bass playing dynamo in The Toadies — but an ever growing number of people know Doni as a practitioner, instructor, and advocate of martial arts training. In fact, he wrote an amazing and REALLY funny book about becoming a black belt in his 40s called EVEN IF IT KILLS ME — and you should totally buy it and read it. But even with all that, all Scott really wants to talk about is Doni's old band Hagfish. So on this episode we do that — BUT we also talk about Willie Nelson, Judo, Doni's brother Zach, having a DJ for a dad, mailbox baseball, mooning, straight-edge, a new way to say Zoetrope(?!?), first tours with Bad Brains, Only Crime, learning to play bass with a pick to get the Toadies gig, recording their new album with Steve Albini, and —thanks to Doni— the long awaited Iron Maiden round of WHAT'S THE BEST?!? is NOT going to go the way Gabe had planned.

From being repeatedly thrown off your bed in a storm, to seeing blue whales out of your porthole, working at sea doesn't leave you short of stories. And with Dr Thom and the Professor both heading offshore soon, they thought what better time to share some of their sea stories. From tips on how to hold your pee for 12+ hours, to tales of typhoons, this episode is jam-packed with real-life tales from decades of working offshore. In deep sea news: Norway has decided to go ahead with deep sea mining, cold coral reefs are being discovered, and hoards of marine fungi have been found in the twilight zone! But more importantly than all of that: the Professor was awarded an OBE! His sword and noble steed are currently in the post (first class), and we're hoping they reach him in Perth from the Palace. We've also started a new segment with long-time friend of the show, Andrew Stewart who has an interesting hobby of manufacturing cod-liver shark-liver oil. Expect more unexpected stories from Andrew in future episodes! Finally, we want to say thanks again for your support! The bodies of most fish are scaly. The scales protect them from predators and rough surfaces, improve streamlining, and ward off diseases and parasites. But a few species have different forms of protection: tough skin, bony plates, or thick layers of slime.Scales vary in size, shape, alignment, and structure. The bodies of most sharks, for example, are covered by rows of tiny, pointed scales that aim toward the tail. The scales of tarpon, on the other hand, are round and can be more than two inches across.Scales are especially helpful for marine biologists. The scales grow throughout the fish's life. Each year of growth is bounded by a dark ring, allowing scientists to determine a fish's age. They can also analyze the scales to learn more about a fish's growth rate, diet, and its environment from year to year. The list of fish without scales is pretty short. It includes hagfish and lampreys—odd-looking critters that are covered in a thick layer of slime. Hagfish can shed that layer if they're attacked, allowing them to simply slip away. The slime produced by clingfish contains a toxin that can kill other fish.Moray eels have an especially thick skin. It's covered with slime-producing cells, providing two layers of protection. And a skinny species known as razorfish, which floats nose-down, is covered by bony plates that extend all the way to the tail, ending with a sharp spine. So these and other “naked” fish have good protection even without scales.
You're downtown. You're on your way to the Bengals game, and you see a panhandler on the street with a sign. Hungry. Please give. You do one of three things. You pull out your wallet and give him a dollar. Or you shake your head to say no. Or you look straight ahead, trying not to catch his eye as you walk by him. And then you feel guilty and you wonder, Did I just become a goat because I did not feed the least of my brothers and sisters? Jesus told me that when I feed the hungry, I'm feeding the king. And when I refuse, I refuse the king. And as you keep walking with those troubling thoughts, you look up and you see six more panhandlers ahead of you Is every single panhandler the king who judges us? Are we being tested every time we do or do not help the needy? Does a king really count up all of the times that we give a handout and balance them out against all the times we don't? The king gathers up everybody and separates the good from the bad. Or as we say in theological terms, separates the keepies from the creepies. The sheep from the goats. Which I kind of object to because I think it's unfair to goats. So, for today, I am going to substitute for the more accurate hagfish. Also known as slime eels. Because hagfish are out only for themselves. And they spew slime at any strangers who come near. Just like in this story.

Donivan has played bass for Hagfish, Only Crime and is now the bass player for The Toadies and has toured and recorded extensively for over 25 years. He also holds a first degree black belt in Taekwando. In the episode, the two talk Donivan's tenure with The Toadies and he shares a secret from his audition and how he nailed the gig. They reflect on their old bands, their upbringing and escape from a terrible Texas town and why they wouldn't change a thing. The Brothers Blair also talk about how their father 's great taste in music and guidance that led them to a devoted career in music. Donivan confesses an obsession with the great Rickenbacker bass guitar, and they get into a typical brotherly argument over a guitar that makes for a spicy "one that got away" segment. Pangolins try to sell SG-1 on the miracle of green coffee bean extract, but it turns out it's just Tok'ra goo from a Hagfish sack. Elsewhere, Jonas and Teal'c examine an ancient dick pic, Jack and Sam talk to a lot of people, and hagfish biology is whatever we want it to be. And don't forget, no one expects the wine clown.
Living at depths of up to 5,000 feet, the Hagfish is one of the strangest creatures in the ocean. And there's plenty on the list! The Goblin Shark, Sea Spiders, Red-lipped Batfish, and even people swimming during winter! Although it looks like an eel, this fish belongs to the Agnatha species. Terrifying monsters with disk-shaped, suction-cup mouths filled with spiraling rows of teeth! Hagfish have 2 tongues, 4 hearts, and no eyes or stomach. Like something from another planet! And what sets them apart from anything on this planet, is that they have a skull but no spine! They don't have bones either. That unique spineless skull is made entirely out of cartilage. But scaleless with skin that seems to fit them like an oversized holiday sweater, it'd be a mistake to think this frail little creature would be an easy dinner. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to this very special interview episode of the Banned Biographies Podcast where your host, Tom Austin-Morgan, talks to Zach Blair, the lead guitarist of Rise Against. I met Zach on the ferry back from both our European tours in November and he was such a gentleman. He gave me a lot of time and asked about the tour, about my podcast and told me about his own brilliant podcast, Anti-Heroes with Zach Blair, upon which he talks with other guitarists that he admires about their guitars, set ups and equipment. He also told me about the other bands he's played in including Hagfish, Armstrong, Only Crime, and GWAR, some of which he talks about on this episode. Zach is such a great guy and so full of stories, as you would expect from someone who has been doing this for as long as he has. I'm so thankful to him for talking to me, even though this is a shorter than usual episode due to how busy Zach is. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I had having it. If you have any additional questions after listening that I didn't have time to ask him, perhaps I'll be able to entice him back on in future and put them to him. Until then, if you want more Zach chat, go and subscribe to his podcast, and let him know I sent you, so he knows you heard him on here and he knows this is a good place for him to come back. " FIRST EPISODE OF SEASON TWO!!!!!! Thank you all so much for joining me! I couldn't be happier or more thankful to have this opportunity for another amazing season and we're starting it off with a BANG!! Today I get to sit down with a buddy I met almost thirty years ago! A little backstory: Chris Shiflett used to play in a punk band called, No Use For A Name in the 90's and I used to play in a punk band called Hagfish (also in the 90's...which is crazy because I'm still 25).Our paths used to cross all the time because we were on the same label (Fat Wreck Chords) and played shows together all over the place but it wasn't until one night at the famous, Bottom Of The Hill in San Francisco, Chris came out to see us play and him and i just hit it off. We realized we had a lot in common. From heavy metal to our love for the same guitars and gear and even the same players. We also both had older brothers that also played and had showed us both everything we knew. It was like we'd know each other forever and we've been close friends ever since. I called him immediately after I'd heard the news that he'd joined one of the world's biggest (if not THE biggest) bands. I was so happy for him and proud of him. He's also been a major inspiration for me to always keep pushing and wanting better for myself. He's just the best and I love the guy.He deserves everything he has ten-fold. He's also a hell of a player and we talk about all of that and so so much more.I could keep going on and on but you'll hear me do a lot of that!Once again, thank you for tuning into my first episode of my second season of this thing that I love so much. I couldn't do it without you all and I hope you enjoy!" -Zachhttps://www.jimdunlop.com/Explore more music podcasts at Ruinous Media.Find us on Instagram

Zach Blair of Rise Against joined us for this one. We went over so much during this interview! Blair is someone who is always focusing on music in some capacity. Whether it's his podcast, seeing his brother Doni's band (Toadies) on the road, or playing in his band - he's always moving. His podcast, Anti-Hereos, started this year. In some ways, his father served as a hidden inspiration for his current podcast. His father's all night request hour was his own corner of the show biz. Now, Zach is behind the mic for his podcast. Zach wanted to be involved in music from day one. He knew from the start that he was going to play music or die trying. It would one day become his main source of income. We discussed the music scene with a full conversation about the evolution of punk and how touring has changed from the days when he had to use payphones and road maps to get around. Additionally, we reviewed the term "sellout," and discussed Dan Ozzi's hit book since Rise Against had a chapter in it. Last year Blair had a full circle moment when Rise Against went on tour with the Descendents. To this day they are one of his favorite bands and a big influence for his first band, Hagfish. His journey in music has been filled with countless connections. One that eventually led to meeting the members of Rise Against, clicking with them, and joining the band.
At last, the Toadies have taken the “Rubberneck” 25th anniversary tour on the road, a tour that lands at Metro in Chicago on October 9th. Bassist Doni Blair called in just as the band was set to take the stage in Kansas City. Discussed in this episode: The legacy and impact of the “Rubberneck” album. The Texas explosion of the 90s (including Tripping Daisy, Hagfish, Course of Empire and Reverend Horton Heat). Hagfish had a one-of-a-kind anthem back in the day.
A conversation with Donivan Blair, an Amarillo resident who lives here but travels all over the world as the bassist for the rock band The Toadies, which he joined in 2008. Over the past couple decades he has recorded 17 albums—several with the band Hagfish, which he founded—and performed in hundreds of venues. Doni also holds a first-degree black belt in Taekwondo, is learning Jiu Jitsu, and is the author of the memoir Even If It Kills Me, a book about martial arts, rock and roll, and mortality. This episode is sponsored by Discover Amarillo, KWTS “The One,” and Purpose + Passion Boutique.
We have our gills clogged by the deep sea slimy blood sock that is the HAGFISH, and then it burrows deep inside our flesh to eat us from the inside out.
Kerry Crafton As a producer and sound engineer, Kerry Crafton has worked with a long list of the most revered names in Texas metal/hard rock history, including Rigor Mortis, Juggernaut, Dead Horse, Devastation, Watchtower, Butthole Surfers, Agony Column and Angkor Wat, among others. Created and Produced by Jared Tuten

On today's episode Barry observes Hagfish Day and Snoop Dog's 50th Birthday. Plus, he shares the stories of how he escaped two burglaries in the mid 1970s.
On this one, the guys get to talk to Zach's big brother, Donivan Blair, author of the self-help/martial arts book, "Even If It Kills Me", and the bassist for the bands, The Toadies, Hagfish, Only Crime, Mag 7 and The Tulsa Dooms! Things turn into a mushy bro-down as the brothers get all brotherly and shit. We discuss Doni's Book, his career, his relationship to your favorite co-host (natch) and, as always, ask him his current three favorite things. Zach tries to impress his big brother but Doni ends up liking Mike more in the end (sad face). Check out Doni's book wherever you get books and his music wherever you find music (especially the stuff he did with Zach because Zach is cool/smart/rad). This episode explores and definitively proves (in Zach's case) the age old schoolyard epithet: "MY BIG BROTHER CAN BEAT UP YOUR BIG BROTHER!!!!!!!! (shaking fist) Learn more about your ad choices.
