Something you hear our last year described as a lot is a “dark time” or a “dark season.” Getting to the end of all that was described as a “new day” or a “new morning” for us. And there's a lot of truth to that, since so many of us lost so much in 2020. But it's worth asking if our immediate impulses to avoid, ignore or rush through those dark times and get right to the morning is the healthiest way to deal with pain and hardship. Last year at STORY, we asked that question, and one of our most talked about speakers, Brooke Shaden, had some really great thoughts to share. Brooke is a wonderful artist who uses her work to explore things like darkness, pain, death and decay. She wants to find beauty in those things, and hopefully help us have a better understanding of the dark and hard times in our own life. It's an experience she's walked through, and now she wants to help others do it too.

Brooke Shaden is a conceptual fine art photographer specializing in self-portraiture. After graduating college with degrees in film and English, she turned to photography to tell the stories she always wanted to let loose. Photography provided a medium that was faster than film with the richness of story that writing had, and she built a career from those passions. Her work has received awards for it's cohesion and storytelling abilities. Many of the images are dark yet timeless and whimsical, creating a sometimes disturbing yet beautiful montage of worlds that people feel connected to. Shaden's work reminds us that there is dark and light inside us all, and that element has allowed for openness and sharing of the ideology behind the works, garnering more than one million followers online. When not creating personal work, Brooke is a dedicated philanthropist, teaching self-expression workshops for survivors of human trafficking. She has also started photography schools for the same community in India and Thailand. Brooke lives in a small mountain town with her husband and kitties.

As 2020 comes to a close, This Conversation will be featuring two classic episode from the "early days". This episode featuring Brooke Shaden was originally released on January 8, 2018. Brooke explores the darkness and light in people, and her work looks at that juxtaposition. As a self-portrait artist, she photographs herself and becomes the characters of dreams inspired by a childhood of intense imagination and fear. Being the creator and the actor, Brooke controls her darkness and confronts those fears. After studying films for years in college, she realized her love of storytelling was universal. She started photography then in 2008, excited to create in solitude and take on character roles herself. Brooke works from a place of theme, often gravitating toward death and rebirth or beauty and decay. Ultimately, her process is more discovery than creation. She follows her curiosity into the unknown to see whom her characters might become. Brooke believes the greatest gift an artist has is the ability to channel fears, hopes and experience into a representation of one's potential. While her images come from a personal place of exploration, the goal in creating is not only to satisfy herself; her greatest wish is to show others a part of themselves. Art is a mirror for the creator and the observer . Brooke's passion is storytelling, and her life is engulfed in it. From creating self-portraits and writing to international adventures and motivational speeches, she wants to live a thousand lives in one. She keeps her curiosity burning to live a truly interesting story. Self Description: Intensely anxious, powerful little creative soul. Favorite Memory: Flying into the sky before she lost her wings at the age of 5. Greatest Achievement: Starting The Light Space, a photography school for survivors of human trafficking in India and now Thailand. Greatest Fear: Whales. Favorite Book: Dune by Frank Herbert.

Despite this, we discuss how much she gives to her community, her workshops and her humanitarian work with The Light Space.Of course, we also talk about her approach to her photography and the often dark subject matters, dealing with death and decay, that she visits. I am not a Barbie mom. The reason I'm not a Barbie Mom is that when my daughter asks me to sit and "play" with her– whether it be with her Barbies or lego or stuffed toys–I freeze. Imagination is not my superpower. And...I don't think I'm alone in this. As a mom, my guess is you are more accustomed to cycling through your endless to-do list or getting your family from point A to point B than expressing your creativity.  Somewhere between childhood wonder and adult responsibility, we lose sight of what it means to play. We forget how to use our imagination and express ourselves creatively. And that is why all this month at Momtography we're exploring imagination and how we can infuse it into our lives and our photos in a way that makes us feel excited–not awkward. For today’s return-guest, Natalie Allgyer, (Episode #68) photography started like it does for many new moms, taking photos of just her daughter. As her photos improved and people began asking her to start a family and newborn business, something didn't feel right. She realized her imagination was much bigger than her reality.  Today, Natalie and I chat about her process and the world of fine art photography. We talk about what happens when you step out of your comfort zone, use your imagination, and step forward with a healthy dose of patience and consistency. Photography tip: Every episode, Momtography Club community Director Jen and I sit down together and share a tip you can use to get more comfortable with your camera so you can capture more of what matters in your life. Jen's unofficial title at Momtography is the Queen of Photo Projects. So with that in mind, this month Jen and I will be sharing photo projects to spark your imagination and inspire you to go capture, develop, and preserve more photos!  Listen to the full episode to hear: Natalie’s story of going from mom with a camera toward fine art photography and why she didn't go the traditional photography route as most moms do How she discovered her process of intricate details and how that process is largely a process of patience  The importance of mentors when we are trying to learn a new skill What it takes to get a foot in the door of Fine Art Photography World  And how Natalie was able to heal her crippling anxiety by embracing her imagination and expressing her creativity Links: Natalieallgyer.com Natalie on Instagram  Natalie on Facebook Fine Art Compositing with Brooke Shaden  Momtography Club

Brooke Shaden has clarity. She knows why she’s making. And that why pervades everything. The why is her legacy, her message, her brand. Brooke’s why is to inspire creativity in others. When you have that kind of clarity you don’t worry about changing creative direction or trying out a new medium. You don’t concern yourself with those who rail against your making or criticize your style. Her why is bigger than her art. It’s bigger than her audience. It’s her north star. Brooke’s additional love of motivational speaking, writing, and education led her to bring the Promoting Passion Convention to life — a series of hands-on workshops, lectures, and creative panel discussions dedicated to helping artists make a difference with their passion. She’s also responsible for starting The Light Space — a photography school for survivors of human trafficking in India and Thailand. In this conversation, Branden and Brooke hash out the belief that the greatest gift an artist has is to promote passion and share your unique self. soundsgoodpodcast.com/brooke

Brooke Shaden is a prolific artist, photographer, writer, and speaker. In addition to her work, she also runs a charity in India that helps the victims of sex trafficking make money from photography. We cover a lot of topics in our conversation and Brooke gives great advice to anyone just starting out. MEET BROOKE: Brooke Shaden was born in March of 1987 in Lancaster, PA, USA. She grew up near the “Amish Country” until attending Temple University. Brooke was photographically born in December 2008 after graduating from Temple with bachelor degrees in film and English. She began creating self-portraits for ease and to have full control over the images, and has since grown into a self-portrait fine art photographer. Self-portraiture for her is not autobiographical in nature. Instead, she places herself within environments she wishes to explore, where secrets are exposed, impossibilities are tested, and life is questioned in eras beyond our own. Brooke works to capture fantastic realities within her photographic frame. By using painterly techniques as well as the square format, traditional photographic properties are replaced by otherworldly elements. Brooke Shaden is a fine art photographer, author, and motivational speaker from Lancaster, PA.  She grew up near the "Amish Country" until attending Temple University. Brooke was photographically born in December 2008 after graduating from Temple with bachelor degrees in film and English. Self portraiture for her is not autobiographical in nature. Instead, she places herself within environments she wishes to explore, where secrets are exposed, impossibilities are tested, and life is questioned in eras beyond our own. Brooke works to capture fantastic realities within her photographic frame. By using painterly techniques as well as the square format, traditional photographic properties are replaced by otherworldly elements.Full shownotes: http://yourcreativepush.com/brookeshaden In this episode, Brooke discusses: -How photography felt like a rebirth for her because it was one of the first things that she considered herself “good at.” -The story of the first time she picked up the camera and started with self-portraiture. -How she has always loved writing and her reason for starting her blog “Promoting Passion.” -Her reason for starting her YouTube channel despite her extreme fear of public speaking. -How she doesn’t like working in teams if she can avoid it. -How she is able to balance her time and produce all of the content that she is able to put out in her various mediums. -The importance of knowing your business so that you can focus solely on the things you love and want to produce and say “no” to things that don’t fit that. -The story behind “Phoenix.” -The story behind “Capturing Inspiration.” -The many factors that contributed into her starting self-portraiture. -How she feels like "The Falling of Autumn Darkness" entirely captures her essence. -One of the things that holds her back is wanting to create images that are darker in nature and fearing the backlash that might come from doing so. -How she has recently decided to slow down her creative pace to make work that will take her longer but will be more creatively fulfilling. -A creatively fulfilling moment in Iceland where she was able to really push herself. -How it's okay if who you think you want to be ends up not being who you become, especially when it comes to art. Brooke's Final Push will inspire you to ignore others and forge your own path! Quotes: “It was quickly evident that photography would morph into the thing that I would continue to pursue.” “I could just pretend that my camera was a friend standing in front of me and sharing my insights, my failures, my successes – anything I had going on at the moment and do that really vulnerably. “I think the moment that we accept our weaknesses and turn them into strengths, then we have control over those things. "To me, self-portraiture is the best way of expressing who I am and being able to do that in the most genuine way while keeping control of the whole creative situation." "Art is the best way of understanding yourself and the better we understand ourselves the more fulfilled our lives can be." "Every single time I put pen to paper or I pull out my camera, it's that question of "Who am I now?  Who do I want to be?  And how will I portray that?  And that is the biggest gift." "It's fine if who you think you want to be turns out to not be true." "Whatever you feel you need to be doing in your life, do it.  Forge your own path and let others follow in your footsteps." Samantha Geballe's photographs made a deep impression on me when I first saw them back in 2014. Her fearless series of self-portraits are some of the most intense, honest portrayals of an artist's inner life I've seen, documenting her emotional journey from obesity through gastric bypass surgery toward self-acceptance. In this week's episode we talked about her work, about honesty and fear, and about the importance of connection and being heard. Samantha's discussion topic, which we talked about in the second half of the show, was benefit of the doubt. I had decided to walk away from photography, but I had these tickets to attend After Dark in St. Louis. This would be my last hurrah. Or so I thought until I met Brooke Shaden. She showed me that fine art photography was within my reach. Over those three days, she would show me how to transform my photography. I am far from alone when I say that Brooke Shaden changed my life. She has a community of hundreds of thousands who would likely chime in with similar stories.  Note that this was recorded in December of 2014. When we refer to next year, we are speaking of this year (2015).
