January 25, 2024, A Question of Ethics Conversation Episode Welcome to the latest episode of A Question of Ethics Conversation. The topic for this discussion is Organization Fairness. The October 26th, 2023, Question of Ethics Conversation hosted by Samantha Wallis, brought up many interesting questions. One set of questions revolved around the concept of fairness. We are all dedicated to fairness and take it seriously, Canon1.3 of NACM's Model Code for Court Professionals speaks to fairness. It reads that the court professional makes the court accessible and conducts his or her business without bias or prejudice. The Model Code actually mentions Fairness nine different times. Fairness, however, is subjective. Everyone has their own idea of what is fair. What I consider fair may not be the same as how you see things. What are the perceptions of fairness in an organization, particularly a court organization? Employees often express perceptions of fairness, with which we, as managers, might disagree. Although not all employees hold these perceptions, they are common enough that it might be instructive to ask if we, as managers, can craft responses that can convince employees of a different view of fairness. Can we come up with something more than just saying “the organization has determined the following policy is fair, the topic is not up for debate.” This Conversation recounts three specific perceptions that some employees have. The panel will discuss if there is some sort of response that could persuade employees of the validity of a different concept. In essence, is there a response that might change “hearts and minds?” · Perception 1 A manager needs to be able to perform the desk work of every employee he or she manages. If he or she cannot, that manager has no right to conduct performance reviews of the employees. · Perception 2 Managing employees is just using common sense. There is no great skill involved in management. It is ridiculous that courts pay exorbitant salaries to managers for just using their common sense. · Perception 3 The employee's manager is not the employee's friend. If an employee gets into trouble at work and they need an advocate. The manager will not save them. But as a Research Rockstar, we want you to know the correct use, and in this Conversations episode, your host, Kathryn Korostoff, shares some guidance as to how you can create a top-line with confidence. This Conversation is an excerpt from the Research Rockstar eLearning course on Writing Qualitative Research Reports, available at Training.ResearchRockstar.com.

"Some of the shared concepts - even words that psychoanalysis and musicians use - such as conflict, ambiguity, silences, dissonance, resolution or not, working through, is in the Mozart you've heard. What you hear in the very opening four measures was worked through this entire sonata, it was thematic. If we play the whole sonata, and even in the first movement, you get a taste of it. Those themes are present throughout the sonata just like in the patient's associations and interactions with you - we have music themes and we have core conflicts, and they get developed.” Episode Description: We begin by listening to the opening of Mozart's A minor sonata, performed by Professor Louis Nagel. Mozart wrote this during the time of his mother's death, and it was one of the very few instances of his utilizing a minor key. From that example, we explore the interface between the dynamic mind and the layering of classical music. Concepts of core conflict, displacement, and resolution represent important meanings in both fields. Julie shares clinical examples of how music enters her clinical space with her patients. She also shares with us her life story and how music played a central role in helping her negotiate tumultuous personal circumstances. She demonstrates what it means to be an ambassador for both music and psychoanalysis - on and off the couch. Our Guest: Julie Jaffee Nagel, PhD is a psychologist, psychoanalyst, and musician. She graduated from The Juilliard School, the University of Michigan, and The Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. She has presented widely on Stage Fright, Careers in the Arts, #Me Too and Music Education, The Value of Music in Mental Life, and “Injustice, Oppression, and Prejudice As ‘Heard'” in Music.” Her fantasy dialogue, A Conversation Between Mozart and Freud, was performed in Steinway Hall, NYC, in February 2020. She is the author of Managing Stage Fright and Melodies of the Mind. She has served as chair of the American Psychoanalytic Association's discussion group Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Music, was a member of the Program Committee, Symposium Committee, and is currently Chair of the Ticho Award Committee. She has presented at The College Music Society, Music Teachers National Conference, and National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, from whom she received their Distinguished Service Award. Additional Awards include two Nathan Segal Awards (MPI), The Karl Menninger Award, and the Ernst and Gertrude Ticho Award for contribution to psychoanalysis and music. Her latest book, Career Choices in Music Beyond the Pandemic: Musical and Psychoanalytic Perspectives, offers unique musical and psychological perspectives on one of the most important decisions made in a musician's (or anyone's) lifetime: choosing a career. She is in private practice in Dexter, Michigan. #079 This Conversation with Pastor Andrew Reilly is a must listen to episode if you are a college student or younger! Parents and grandparents, if you have kids or grandkids who are college students or younger this is a must listen episode!Andrew completely nails post-Modernism, the disconnect culturally that is totally devastating our most precious resource in colleges across the country. The ferocity at which post-Modernism is tearing apart the precious lives of Gen-Z students cannot be over emphasized.I completed an organizational doctoral leadership program five years ago specifically looking at the mindset and worldview of Millennials and Gen-Z as they entered the workplace. I wrote a 400 page dissertation based upon my research and later a book on this topic. What I discovered culturally about these two generations was so shocking I completely altered my vocational path in an attempt to warn others of what is coming our way. What we are seeing in 2022 is just the start of something much darker coming our way.Andrew nails the issue during our conversation and presents very practical means of binding the open artery draining the life blood out of our youth. You will hear truth in this conversation that will cause you to quake if you're a believer. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of listening to what Andrew has to say.PUSH PLAY and listen… you'll never think the same way afterward. This CONVERSATION occurs as the US Fed makes its latest move on interest rates to tamp down the hottest US inflation in four decades. On Wednesday, September 21, the Fed increased its key short-term rate by three-quarters of a percentage point to a range of 3% to 3.25%. The move comes on the heels of four rate hikes earlier this year with the central bank now boosting the federal funds rate by 0.75% at each of its last three meetings. Today's inflation is a consequence of the massive growth in the US money supply and the Fed's easy money policies, DICK BOVE, chief financial strategist at ODEON CAPITAL GROUP, reminds us in this episode of the ODEON CAPITAL CONVERSATIONS podcast. There are no solutions, only-trade offs [in seeking to satisfy the problems of our ages], says MAT VAN ALSTYNE, quoting Thomas Sowell, the economist and political commentator. In today's context, VAN ALSTYNE explains, that has meant the excessive printing of money to solve one problem in our economy, has led to problems elsewhere. "The chickens have come home to roost," he adds. In an in-depth new report, BOVE highlights two major Wall Street firms, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, to examine seismic changes in the US economy. "My belief is that the United States is being forced into a transformative change of every aspect of its economy and financial system," BOVE writes. "Business models that worked well in the old environment will not work well in the new environment. Therefore, investment must be adjusted to reflect the change that is now underway." How are Goldman and Morgan facing these challenges? BOVE answers by first taking a deep dive into the multiple financial and geopolitical forces buffeting the globe. Neurobiology and the SoulWhat is the connection between our mind and our soul? New discoveries in neuroscience reveal that love can literally change our minds — that our relationships and interactions with others help shape our brains – which in turn, shape our relationships and behaviors. The link between our habits and spiritual practices and the renewing of our mind may be far more direct than once supposed.Friendship Shapes our SoulOn Friday, June 24th we hosted an Online Conversation with psychiatrist Curt Thompson and The King's University philosophy professor Jeffrey Dudiak to discuss the convergence of what brain research and spiritual practices reveal about the formation and development of our mind, heart, and soul. These longtime friends shared how their relationship has been used by God to repair and shape their lives in fascinating and unexpected ways. This Conversation is part of our Discovery and Doxology series in partnership with BioLogos and Church of the Advent bringing together leading scientists, theologians, and scholars to discuss the relationship between science and faith.Learn more about Curt Thompson and Jeff Dudiak. You already know, if you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, it's time to collaborate. Yes, that's my take on that old African proverb, but I thought it was apropos because it's what we're talking about today! As we prepare to wind our series and our season down, we cannot ignore God's instruction to collaborate with others, and today Natalie Willis is joining me.Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 tell us: Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.I cannot tell you how many times I've wanted to quit, but thankfully, I've had wise counsel and healthy collaborations to encourage me to keep going.I had so much fun chatting with Natalie, and I am so grateful for the time and wisdom that she shared with us.This Conversation was So Necessary!Grab your journal because Natalie is teaching ushow friendship and collaboration work together;how to maintain healthy boundaries in a collaboration;how to communicate clearly;how to recognize warning signs it's time to end the collaboration;and what to do when you don't feel peace about a collaboration.Find the Show Notes HereConfident Collaborations: The QuizIdentifying Insecurity on YouVersionRemember, to take a screenshot of this podcast and post in on Instagram like my friend Taneya Hunter did. This episode is a nerdy one, but we are nerdy and you already knew that. This episode is inspired by a podcast episode called "This Conversation will Change How You Think About Thinking" played on The Ezra Klein Podcast. We highly recommend checking out this episode and this podcast in general. It's amazing! We discuss the book "The Extended Mind” written by Annie Murphy Paul, an acclaimed science journalist. We discuss that gut feeling or intuition many of us often dismiss. This feeling is called Interoception. We discuss its importance as it relates to food and how we think about eating and engaging in healthy habits. We also mention the book that inspired our philosophy of intuitive eating called Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program that Works by Elyse Resch and Evelyn Tribole. We go deep, and I mean, Adam and Eve deep. Cat is drinking País Viejo Old Vines by J. Bouchon Chile 2020 Kelly is drinking a Cabernet Sauvignon by Smith & Hook

To sell or not to sell? When it comes to developing a successful photography business, that is always the question. While industry experts have long since shown that there is more money in selling product, many photographers continue to prefer to shoot and burn. Why? Because making the transition to selling product feels beyond overwhelming. But you don't have to do it alone. In this four part podcast series with Jed Taufer (which originally aired on his podcast, This Conversation sponsored by White House Custom Color), we will explore the process of taking an image from Pixels to Product. Whether you are just starting out or have been selling product for years, this series will be one you won't want to miss. But since my intent is to write something useful to whoever understands it, it has appeared to me more fitting to go directly to the effectual truth of the thing than to the imagination of it. — Niccolo Machiavelli, in Chapter 15 of The Prince. According to Harvey Mansfield, these lines including the phrase effectual truth—a term invented by Machiavelli—are central to Machiavelli's founding of the revolution in philosophy, science, and politics that we call modernity. In this Conversation—our 200th episode!—our first and most frequent guest Harvey Mansfield returns to the program to discuss his recent work on Machiavelli, and presents an incisive and provocative account of some of the more challenging and too-little-understood aspects of Machiavelli's teaching. In particular, Mansfield draws out the world-historical significance of Machiavelli's discovery or invention of the effectual truth and shows why Machiavelli can justly be called the founder of modernity. This Conversation has also been added to the Harvey Mansfield site on Contemporary Thinkers and the Machiavelli site on Great Thinkers.

Before we can communicate the value of what we do to our customers, we first need to learn to value ourselves, our time, and our work. Today's episode is all about value, and who better to discuss this with than Jed Taufer, host of the This Conversation podcast, and someone who has had a positive impact on my own career. There are a number of factors which value is built upon, some of which are objective, and some of which are subjective. Jed, through his years of experience on both the studio ownership and photo lab sides of the photography industry, has created a list of game changing factors relating to value, a few of which he shares with us today. Among other topics, we discuss mentors, minimalism, and the “hire slow, fire fast” approach Jed and his business partner and wife Vicki have adopted. First released in June 2014, this Conversation is the first in our series of Conversations with Harvard government professor Harvey Mansfield, one of the leading students of political philosophy. In it, Mansfield reflects on the importance of studying political philosophy and discusses, in brief, his work on great thinkers of political philosophy such as Edmund Burke, Alexis de Tocqueville, and Niccolo Machiavelli. He also discusses the influence of Leo Strauss on his work. This Conversation offers a great introduction to Mansfield's thought and work. It is very much worth revisiting for those who heard it at the time and it serves as a great introduction to Mansfield's work for those who may be new to it.
