Following up starring in a string of big budget genre epics (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) in the early part of the '80's, Harrison Ford decided to detour just a bit with this smaller-scale suspense thriller directed by the legendary Peter Weir (Dead Poet's Society, The Truman Show). Here he plays John Book, a Philadelphia police detective investigating a local murder where the ONLY witness is a young Amish boy (Lucas Haas) who happened to be travelling through the area with his mother at the time. As it turns out, this murder investigation goes up the chain of the local police department and after an attempt is made on Book's life, he flees to the nearby Amish Country where the young boy lives with his mother Rachel (Kelly McGillis). There as they help nurse John back to health, he not only becomes involved with the local Amish community but develops a forbidden romance with Rachel. And what results is one of the best thrillers of the decade as it also was eventually nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, and what has remained the ONLY Oscar nomination for Ford, Best Actor. In this Kinda Murdery Classic the discovery of the child's body, lying frozen in a cornfield, on Christmas Eve, in Chester, Nebraska, turned a the solitary hunter from a mere witness to an urgent harbinger of a dark mystery that needed unraveling. His pulse quickening, he retraced his steps out of the cornfield, each footfall a heavy note in the otherwise silent expanse. He sought help with the weight of his grim find pressing down upon him, a burden he could not bear alone. The police officers, upon their prompt arrival, plunged into the investigative fray, their professional detachment strained by the young age of the victim. They were driven by the conviction that somewhere, perhaps within the quiet homes dotted across the sleepy town or beyond its borders, there was a void where this child once existed—a family missing their little one. Someone must be missing, "Little Boy Blue." I also soaked up stories of redemption in the small-town churches we attended. Even though I knew I wanted to write fiction by the time I was in the sixth grade, as I grew older I pursued other things, such as majoring in history and communications, working as a museum curator, then as a public relations specialist, and finally as a magazine editor. Once I finally started writing fiction, it was another ten years until I sold my first novel. Soon after, I received a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, which allowed me to teach writing at a local university besides writing novels full-time. I've written a large collection of dual-time, Amish, and contemporary novels, set in a variety of places—from the Pacific Northwest to Amish Country to France to Vietnam. My husband, Peter, and I have been married forty-one years and have four adult children and two grandchildren. It's time for Horse Progress Days! It's one of our favorite events of the year, and this July it was held in Lancaster County, PA - just in time for the height of a national heatwave. Everyone soldiered on through, though, with nary a complaint to be found from this stoic bunch. It was a good thing everyone pushed through the heat until the close of the day, because the HPD organizers saved some of the best for last (okay, the middle and beginning was pretty good, too). The Backyard Green Films bunch had a front row seat for the Breed Presentation. With longtime HPD participant Dale Stoltzfus doing a wonderfully informative commentary track, horses of every size, shape and color were on view, and riders, drivers, leaders and be-free-rs were putting on a show. The commentary was so informative that we wanted to bring it all to you on our podcast, but in a few days you can go to the Backyard Green Films YouTube channel to get a (dusty) front-row visual as well. Either way, we hope you feel like you were sitting right next to us for the whole show. Les, Kurt, and Jason are headed to a place where no podcast is meant the thrive: Amish Country! But first, Blac Chyna's mom Tokio Toni got heated and flirty with The Game in a way that makes you rethink your snack foods. Then, it's time for Lifetime's Amish Stud: The Eli Weaver Story a true story about an Amish guy (Luke Macfarlane) that's using a Sidekick and dating apps on the DL but still needs a taxi driver (Criminal Minds' Kirsten Vangsness) to drive him around (because Amish). You could argue that there are too many people in this movie named Barbara or you could argue that there are never enough Barbaras. But you can't deny the minister with the Spirit Gum would never turn down a pie made by someone named Barbara in much the same way that a lady would never turn down what was being offered by the Time to Make the Donuts guy. It's News Day Tuesday! The MR Crew is back from the long weekend! They speak with Dave Weigel, author of the "Americana" newsletter at Semafor, to break down the results from last night's Iowa Republican Caucus. First, Sam runs through updates on the expanding conflict in the Middle East, the massive pro-Palestine demonstrations across the globe this weekend, Israel's ongoing assault on Gaza, Biden's reelection campaign, congressional policy, and Texas' expanding domination over US border policy, plus, Vivek is cake, and Ron DeSantis is humiliated coming out of the Iowa caucus. Dave Weigel then joins, jumping right into his experience at yesterday's Iowa caucus and how the media presented Donald Trump's decisive win. Weigel then looks to second place, as he walks through what the Iowa results mean for Ron DeSantis' continuing struggle, voter turnout, and what the small gap between DeSantis and Nikki Haley in third shows about the right's general lackluster feel for non-Trump candidates. Expanding on this, Dave and Sam preview the upcoming New Hampshire primary, looking at the vast differences between the two electorates, the importance of the race as an inevitable Haley home loss looms in the next primary, and how the Democrats are organizing around it. Next, they discuss Biden's complete capitulation to a dwindling GOP majority in the House on Immigration, why it will do nothing to win him any votes, and everything to let Republicans define the debate, before wrapping up with how Biden's support for Israel is dampening the minimal excitement for his campaign that exists. Sam expands on this as he parses through Texas' recent move to block Border Patrol from rescuing migrants crossing the Rio Grande, resulting in the death of a mother and two kids, before touching on the regionalization of Israel's war on Gaza, and the Biden Administration's insistence on maintaining the obvious Kabuki theater around pressuring Israel to not do a genocide. And in the Fun Half: Sam explores recent polling on US citizens' preference between a functioning democracy and an economy, a caller asks about swaying his pro-Israel parents, and thought-leaders Tommy Tuberville and Larry Kudlow discuss the hoax of Climate Change, which is a very real threat from China. Christian from Grand Rapids discusses mobilizing for electoral issues, Matt Walsh talks about the absurdity of scientists being able to do science, the Sunrise movement meets Donald Trump, and Marty from the Amish Country walks through his experience at this weekend's march for Palestine in DC and his thoughts on the Cop City-IDF connection. Kowalski from Nebraska dives into the unprecedented horrors of Climate Change, plus, your calls and IMs! Eli Weaver was an Amish man who could have had it all. He had a kind, loving wife named Barbara, and 5 beautiful children. However, Eli wasn't satisfied with the life he had. Over his 10 years of marriage, he would leave his family more than once to live the English way of life before crawling back,m begging for forgiveness from his wife and the leaders of his community. Eli wasn't sorry though, because he had multiple women on the side, one of whom would do just about anything to make him happy, even if that meant killing for him.Connect with us on Social Media! You can find us at:Patreon: The Book of the Dead PodcastInstagram: @bookofthedeadpodX: @bkofthedeadpodFacebook: The Book of the Dead PodcastTikTok: BookofthedeadpodOr visit our website at www.botdpod.com Don't forget to Rate, Review, & Share with someone who would like the PodcastCleveland 19 News. The discovery of the child's body, lying frozen in a cornfield, on Christmas Eve, in Chester, Nebraska, turned the solitary hunter from a mere witness to an urgent harbinger of a dark mystery that needed unraveling. Someone must be missing, "Little Boy Blue." Thistle Finch Distillery Season 3 Episode 12 The CPP Crew (Bret, Dave & Kevin) had Arvin Alston, Head Distiller, from Thistle Finch Distillery in Lancaster, PA in studio. We find out Arvin's history and how he became a distiller and what actually is a Thistle Finch. If you're from Lancaster, PA you've seen the Distlefink, or Thistle Finch, bird on the hex signs surrounding the Amish Country. They used the English translation to keep with the heritage in the area. We learned a lot about them and totally enjoyed our conversation. We encourage you to make a journey to visit them and Arvin will be glad to show you around. He brought with him two styles of their rye whiskey, which was perfect for Kevin and Dave. In today's episode, Rylie Heck and Sofia Scher interview Palm Beach County high school teacher Mrs. Christine Brown. Mrs. Christine Brown grew up near Amish Country in Pennsylvania and went to school at American University in Washington, DC. While student teaching in DC, she taught many students from extremely disadvantaged backgrounds. Ms. Brown first taught in a Title 1 school and had a student named Faith who kept asking to come home with her. A few months later, Mrs. Brown and her husband became licensed for foster care. After a midnight call, a social worker showed up with a 3 year old named Navaeh and that's where her foster care journey began. In the interview, they discuss all things "back to school" including shopping, paperwork, and much more. This is part two of a two-part episode panel.
No one expects to hear stories of beard-loving, barn-raising, technology-avoiding Amish and Mennonites being involved in street crime. Let alone that they have secret pot-growing empires. And outlaw biker-supplied cocaine cowboys riding in black buggies. "Welcome to Amish Country, son! Watch your a$$!"See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Just 30 miles outside of Akron, one of Ohio's largest cities, sits Apple Creek, an Amish Country village that's a throwback to another time. Over the past two centuries, not much has changed. Modern conveniences such as appliances, cell phones, cars and computers are forbidden. They're devoted to God, family and one another. So when a young mother of five is found shot to death in her home, people are shocked. An investigation is launched, and soon, a community that has worked to avoid prying outsiders finds itself at the center of a murder case–only the second in its 250-year history. In this episode, we welcome Matt Greiner back to the show. He is the drummer and one of the founding members of one of the biggest metalcore bands of all time: August Burns Red. They just recently released their 10th full-length studio album called Death Below. In this interview, we discuss what got him into music, how he was able to start a heavy metal band while located in Amish Country, why people automatically assume that all metal music is satanic (spoiler alert: it's not), why the members of August Burns Red decided to not call themselves a “Christian metal band”, how he ministers to fans at his shows, what it's been like to be in a successful band for 20+ years, the one ABR album and one ABR song he would leave for humanity, which ABR song Kyle says is like the musical personification of wagyu beef, how he sees his band's sound evolving as the members age, and much more. Let's get into it… Episode notes and links HERE. Donate to support our mission of equipping men to push back darkness. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
