SEASON 2 - EPISODE 140 - Jon Alexander - Compositing Supervisor In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with compositing supervisor and visual effects artist Jon Alexander (DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE, AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, THE PHANTOM MENACE). Jon was witness to a number of milestones in the history of visual effects, and throughout the episode, Jon shares numerous stories from his long career at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), granting us insight into a time he likens to as the Italian Renaissance. From optical printers to artificial intelligence, Jon shares his experiences working with the many pieces of technology responsible for manipulating images, and he reveals the level of focus he and his colleagues at ILM shared when it came to problem-solving (even during an earthquake!). In addition to his work in film, Jon has also worked on projects for The Sphere in Las Vegas, and he shares what he believes to be the distinctive traits of and the possible uses for the new technology. Jon also reveals what he saw as a groundbreaking advancement in visual effects while working on HOWARD THE DUCK, and we compare past and present VFX techniques. Plus, we break down how optical visual effects are actually made. - This episode is sponsored by Profoto & Aputure

"Civil War" was released last spring to a positive yet somewhat polarizing reception from critics and audiences as its story drew some controversy while the technical crafts were lauded with praise. The film grossed over $126.2 million worldwide, becoming A24's second-highest-grossing film to date, and has been nominated for the American Cinema Editors Awards and won the British Independent Film Craft Awards for Best Sound and Effects. And now, the film's visual effects have been shortlisted by the Academy's visual effects branch for the 97th Academy Awards. Visual Effects Supervisor David Simpson, Visual Effects On Set Supervisor/Compositing Supervisor Chris Zeh, and CG Supervisor Freddy Salazar were all kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work on the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to rent or own from A24 and is up for your consideration in all eligible categories at this year's Academy Awards, including Best Visual Effects. Hugo Guerra is the dictionary definition of multitasking. Having taken his eye for compositing into directing short films and commercials, and supervising VFX, Hugo fills his spare time with producing content for his successful YouTube channel and recording the VFX Notes podcast with Ian Failes. If that's not enough, he's also produced a cookbook with his wife. Hugo talks about his early career in Portugal and how he took his love for movies into short films, and then compositing and directing. He also tells you why you need to go on-set, talks about the benefits of teaching, gives his thoughts on AI and “invisible” CGI, and reveals the inner workings of YouTube.

Acomi and Turk182 take on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) generated art. AI art isn't work created out of a program or prompts, but from a specific request, using other artist's work as the main component. Compositing the art work and styles, provided by the requestor, into a "new" piece of art. This "new" AI generated art retains the some of the unique artistic stylings of the chosen artists; sometimes even carrying over the signature from the original piece. While some say it's unique and original, many others claim it's a new form of plagiarism. Creating the so-called art doesn't take any artistic talent or understanding of shapes and composition. All you need is the AI, a request, and a handful of varying art work. People that create these piece call themselves artists. But, even if it wasn't seen as stealing someone else's work, who is the actual artist? The AI, or the person? Acomi and Turk rage at this talentless and morally void form of "art", and the losers that call themselves artists because of it. #OMTWF #Acomi #Turk182 #KorovaEntertainment #AI #AIArt Follow Acomi on Twitter at @AcomiDraws and on Instagram at AcomiDraws. Despite this, we discuss how much she gives to her community, her workshops and her humanitarian work with The Light Space.Of course, we also talk about her approach to her photography and the often dark subject matters, dealing with death and decay, that she visits.
