When artist Vincent Fantauzzo was a boy he was a street-fighting petty criminal with dyslexia and a blazing talent for drawing. He escaped jail time, and grew up to become one of Australia's most well-known portrait artists.VIncent Fantauzzo is one of Australia's most successful portrait artists. For his luminous, photo-realistic paintings he's won the People's Choice Award at the annual Archibald Prize more than any other artist. He's also won the Moran National Portrait Prize twice, once with a painting of his friend, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, and the second time with a painting of his wife, actor Asher Keddie. All the success is a long way from his upbringing in Broadmeadows in Melbourne, when at times it seemed like he was going to end up in jail, or dead.Vincent struggled so badly with dyslexia that he developed elaborate rituals to avoid writing at school, which is partly how he came to drawing. He became a street-fighting petty criminal and he was kicked out of school at 14 and was drawn into a violent world where he had to be extraordinarily streetwise to survive.Vincent still carries the scars of surviving his childhood into the big, beautiful life he's built for himself as one of Australia's most well-known artists. This episode of Conversations explores origin stories, social disadvantage, parenting, father son relationships, boxing, learning disabilities, struggling in school, Hollywood, the art world, Heath Ledger, Kim Ledger, Batman, family, family dynamics, life story, art, portraits, painting, juvenile crime, drug dealing, hot houses, brothers.Unveiled, written with Craig Henderson, is published by Penguin.

"A lot of times I either put Him under shade, under the shadow or thinking really small, the face is not clear enough. I'm a portrait specialist. English portrait artist and sculptor, Eleanor Cardozo, is known for her bronze sculptures and the dynamic movement in her work. Eleanor was born in London in 1965, the second of 10 children to Colonel Benedict Cardozo, a Military Attaché in the British Army, and Caroline Cardozo, an artist and musician. Her childhood was subjected to the typical adventures of a military family when her father was posted overseas to Aden, Malaysia, Germany, Malawi, Ghana, Cyprus and Gibraltar. Eleanor's education began at a French school in Ghana, followed by boarding school from ages 8 -18 at St Mary's Convent in Dorset. Her interest in art began as a small child so it was with a degree of inevitability that she chose the City & Guilds School of Art London for Fine Art in Sculpture, followed by the Florence Academy and Cecil Graves School in Italy for portraiture. She says: ”I think because I respected my parents so much and they had very high expectations, pretty much everything we did, whether it was piano or art or academics, they wanted it to be at the highest level.” This episode is more than an interview; it's an intimate portrait of an artist's life, filled with anecdotes that make you laugh, moments that inspire, and revelations that make you ponder the nature of creativity. Eleanor's reflections on her boarding school days, her family's musical legacy, and her spiritual journey add layers to her persona, revealing a woman who is as multifaceted as the sculptures she creates. We hear how being a gymnast and dancer through her teens informed her appreciation for athletic movement. Her love of beauty is evident in her work, which has adorned venues such as the Beau-Rivage Palace hotel in Lausanne, Cirque du Soleil, Harrods in London, Terminal 5 at Heathrow, Westminster Abbey, the Palais Wilson in Geneva to name a few. He mentioned that he'd been fascinated by self-portraiture as a kid, so much so that when he was doing his industrial design degree, he wrote his thesis on artists' self-portraits. Fast forward a few years, and we are all taking photos every day and learning really fast how to compose images and read images and why they've been cropped in a certain way. How can the arts help cultivate our intuitive intelligence? What does visual art teach us about consciousness and the human condition? Jonathan Yeo is one of the world's leading figurative artists and portrait painters. From celebrated figures such as Sir David Attenborough, peace activist Malala Yousafzai, the Duke of Edinburgh, Nicole Kidman, and Tony Blair, sitting for a portrait with Yeo is a provisional necessity for any 21st century icon. His work, which has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, is the subject of several major mid-career retrospectives in the UK and internationally. Yeo's course on portrait painting is available now on BBC Maestro."What are you trying to do with the portrait? On a basic level, you're trying to communicate something about the essence of who someone is. You're trying to figure out who they are, not necessarily who they present themselves as. The two things can quite often be different. And then, you're trying to find ways of showing that through their face, their posture, or any other context. My instinct is always to try to reduce down to the essential elements. We read faces. It's obviously very, very deep in our DNA, really our survival instinct. We are programmed to read faces in a very fine-tuned way.Painting is a two-dimensional thing. You're basically taking real, three-dimensional things and making them into fake, two-dimensional ones. When you get into the 3D space, some of those distinctions aren't there anymore. I remember when I showed David Hockney the VR project I'd been working on a few years ago, and he put his finger on this quite well. Most art is about perspective. Certainly, for what he is interested in. As soon as you see something in 3D, whether it's a physical sculpture or a virtual object, that's not there anymore because you're in the space with whatever's being shown, so you're in a very different place."www.jonathanyeo.comwww.bbcmaestro.comwww.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastImages courtesy of Jonathan Yeo

An artist as a child, today's special guest Heather Eck set about on a path of Human Resources and coaching until 2017. Then she suddenly and intuitively returned to art making, creating portraits that capture the color she sees for people, spaces, and animals but also prescribes a healing color to support, balance and heal. Leaving her full-time job in 2019, Heather traded pens for paintbrushes and creates 'Spirit Portraits' where she reads someone's color and paints the aura she sees, plus the prescriptive colors that will help that person discover more about themselves and ultimately heal. Heather Eck, Synesthesia Artist & Color Alchemist, brings extraordinary color insights, perspectives, and wisdom through her unique approach to perceiving, creating, and healing through her artwork. Her background as an HR Manager and Certified Authentic Leadership Coach, ACC, combined with her unique gift of synesthesia, gives her a special skill to communicate, in simple terms, the hidden dynamics and solutions to everyday challenges through clairsentience, intuition, and color reading. As an expert on color, chakras, spirituality, and energy healing, you will gain tips and new tools to uplift and inspire your heart and mind. Heather is a renowned and award-winning artist, intuitive, thought leader, spiritual intuitive healer, passionate coach, and facilitator. Dextra Hoffman's talent as a portrait artist first captured Elle's attention when Dex posted a WiP (work in progress) of Kate McKinnon as Holtzmann on Facebook. Elle quickly procured the portrait (which now hangs in their bedroom), spent a Comic Con with Dextra, and asked their brilliant friend to come on the podcast with the hopes that she would share the story of her grandpa and Captain America. She lovingly obliged. In this far-ranging conversation, Elle and Dextra share how their art has been impacted by grief, their sometimes goofy strategies for breaking out of the tunnel vision of ADHD-driven creative activities, so they remember to do things like eat and stretch, and as many things as their ADHD can fit into a meandering 45 minute episode.Subscribe to Hoorf! Why it was selected for “CBNation Architects”: In this episode, the guest is Angela Singleton, a Baltimore-based portraitist focusing on newborn photography. Angela Sanford's work targets encapsulating the touching connection existing between parents and their children. Key Points: Background and Artistic Goal: Angela Singleton's passion for photography started while she was young and amplified when she had her own child. Angela aims to eternalize the emotional bond between parents and their children, focusing on the near-spiritual connection that the latter bring into the parents' lives. With the accelerating shift into the digital age and the risk of many memories being lost, Angela finds it crucial to provide her clients with a tangible memento to carry throughout their generations. Work Process: Angela offers a high-touch concierge type of service, likening herself to a home-visiting doctor but in the photography context. Angela manages everything from start to finish, including custom planning, outfit selections, backdrop decisions, image selection, album design, and even installation of wall portraits. CEO Hack: To improve her productivity and mental clarity Angela resorts to doing a "brain dump" by writing everything down and removing the negative aspects from her life. CEO Nugget: 'Be yourself' is Angela's nugget of wisdom for business success. CEO Defined: Angela sees empowerment as the core of what defines a CEO. Angela Singleton is also a devoted member of the Professional Photographers of America and offers her photographic services to "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep," an organization providing bereavement photography. How we visualise the Tudors largely comes from their portraits painted by Hans Holbein the Younger.  Between 1526 and 1543, he captured the elite of the Tudor court and beyond - Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Thomas Cromwell, politicians, courtiers, soldiers and countless others.  Every Holbein portrait seems to have begun with a drawing taken at a live sitting. An exhibition of these drawings in now on at Buckingham Palace and allows us to see Holbein's process at work.  In this episode of Not Just the Tudors, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb tours the exhibition with its curator Dr. Kate Heard and art historian Dr. Elizabeth Goldring. This episode was produced by Rob Weinberg.Discover the past with exclusive history documentaries and ad-free podcasts presented by world-renowned historians from History Hit.
