Episode 181 is another installation of our Page to Screen series, this time with Scott Pilgrim! We read the comic series by Bryan Lee O'Malley and watched the film adaptation. It might be the most Toronto thing we've ever read or watched!Show NotesThe Scott Pilgrim comic series was released in six digest-size volumes between 2004-2010, and was originally published in black and white. Hardcover colour versions were released between 2012-2015.Edgar Wright directed the film, with Bryan Lee O'Malley as executive producer, and he nails the stylized look so that the film feels like a comic book come to life. Both the book and the film feature some iconic Toronto locations, including Casa Loma, Sneaky Dee's, the Toronto Reference Library, and Honest Ed's (RIP).This cast is stacked! In 2020, for the 10-year anniversary of the film, most of the cast reunited for a table read of the script. You can watch it on YouTubeShout out to Canadian bands Broken Social Scene and Metric for writing songs for the fictional bands in the film (Crash and the Boys and The Clash at Demonhead respectively), and to Chris Murphy of Sloan for being the musical performance supervisor on the film. Beck wrote the songs for Scott's band, Sex Bob-omb.We truly had a blast reading and watching this. It was just so much fun! We're definitely going to watch the anime series, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. We're officially kicking off spooky season with our next episode on October 1. We'll be talking about Auralee Wallace's recent relsease, The Late-Night Witches. Apparently, we're also keeping the CanCon going because it takes place in PEI!There's going to be three episodes in October, so stick around for our 7th anniversary episode in the middle of the month on the 15th, and then we're wrapping up Halloween season with Mariana Enriquez's new release, Somebody is Walking on Your Grave.Other Books and Media MentionedBy Bryan Lee O'Malley: Lost at Sea, Seconds, SnotgirlDirected by Edgar Wright: Hot Fuzz, Last Night in Soho, Baby Driver
Episode 180 is a book club episode and we're reading The Raven Boys graphic novel adaptation, based on the novel by Maggie Stiefvater, adapted by Stephanie Williams, and illustrated by Sas Milledge. This is Gen's pick and it was great to bring Jette onto the Raven Cycle bandwagon!Show NotesJette remembers Gen reading this book at their old job while on break (and being emotionally devastated by it).Luckily this one doesn't end on too much of a cliff hanger. Unlike other books we've read...looking at you Her Majesty's Royal Coven. (Don't worry, you can read all three of those now, too!)The audiobooks of Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Cycle novels is read by Will Patton, who you might know as the white coach in Remember the Titans. There are plans to adapt all four books in the Raven Cycle series into graphic novels. The second book, The Dream Thieves, is set to come out sometime next year.If you don't want to wait for the graphic novels, the other two in the series are Blue Lily, Lily Blue and The Raven King.In our next episode we'll be talking about another graphic novel, Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley, and its film adaptation. There are six books in the series and the movie is based on all of them, but we're going to at least try to read the first two before we do the episode.

Happy 2024 everybody!!! What better way to ring in the new year than with some unfinished programming from last December and a show that is the most technically Canadian thing we have ever covered. Heavily inspired by Japanese pop culture, based on a Canadian manga series and a 2010 film by a cult British director, and animated by one of the most critically acclaimed Japanese studios in the past 10 years for Netflix - there is barely any "Canadianess" in this series. But no matter how hard you try, you cannot stop us Canadian weebs from lamentably claiming Scott Pilgrim as one of our own. Episode covered for the podcast was Episode 1 "Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life." Directed and Storyboarded by Abel Góngora. Written by Bryan Lee O'Malley and BenDavid Grabinski. My guest today is a Canadian cartoonist and creator of one of the best-loved graphic novels of the 2000s. Born in London, Canada, he joined the Film Studies programme at the University of Western Ontario, but dropped out and moved to Toronto, where he became involved in the city's comics scene. His first graphic novel, Lost at Sea, was published in 2003. The following year, he published Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, a graphic novel featuring a distinctly Canadian superhero, who must battle his new girlfriend's seven supervillain exes. A melting pot of video game references and manga storytelling techniques, the story featured a cast of smart and witty twenty-something dropouts. My guest expected Scott Pilgrim to sell a thousand copies. In fact, the six-volume series sold more than a million copies, and in 2010 was adapted into a film directed by Edgar Wright in which Michael Cera played the lead role. An eight-part animated series, titled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, is due to launch on Netflix later this week, for which the entire main cast from the film have reprised their roles. Scott Pilgrim wraps up in Volume 6 with "Scott Pilgrim's Finest Hour." But is it our podcast's finest hour? Are we able to finally defeat our arch-enemy, Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim series? In the book, Scott takes the fight to Gideon Graves, Ramona's final evil ex-boyfriend. And pretty much every other character ever comes back, finds closure (of a sort), and joins in the final battle against Gideon (not the cat). We're officially kicking off our dive into Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim by revisiting the book that started it all: Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life. How does the book hold up, nearly two decades later? Is Scott still kind of a jerk? Is it still funny? What about the cultural impact of the series? These, you may be surprised to discover, are all things we discuss on the podcast....and though this isn't our discussion of the Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World movie, we do talk a fair amount about how this book fares versus the film. Looking back at the original version of Scott from the book, is Michael Cera the right pick to play our hero?
