Bedbug infestations are not just a modern problem—these pests have been with early human ancestors for 245,000 years, causing problems long before the invention of beds. Lindsay Miles, an entomologist at Virginia Tech, has found that changes in bedbug population size mirrored those of humans, proving they might be our first pest. Miles talks with Host Flora Lichtman about our history with bedbugs and why they're such prolific pests. Plus, the discovery of a new wasp that catches its prey… with butt flaps. Dr. Lars Vilhelmsen, curator at the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen tells us all about it.Guests: Dr. Lindsay Miles is an entomologist at Virginia Tech. In prepping circles, the idea of bugging out has almost become a religion. There's something exciting about the thought of grabbing your bag, disappearing into the woods, and living off the land while society burns. But here's the hard truth: bugging out is your worst option most of the time. In Episode 403, we're breaking down why bugging in—staying home, defending your turf, and riding out the storm—is usually the smarter, safer, and more realistic play for survival.

When I say "bugging" in the title, I mean what's on your mind? What's getting you uncomfortable? What's irritating you? What's not right in your world? Often those irritants are trying to tell us something, and we don't listen until they provoke anger and even rage. What if we learned to listen earlier? Not only to ourselves, but to others? What are they trying to tell us, even when the words they are using are clunky? Listening is an art and a skill we can get better at when we practice it. My mom used to say, referring to my piano lessons as a kid, "practice makes perfect." That's true when we are practicing perfectly. But really, practice makes permanent. The WAY we practice makes all the difference. How are we listening? ARE we listening or are we just hearing? This is a huge distinction and one I'm still working on.
