Scientists say a fossil jawbone found in Taiwan belongs to a type of extinct early humans. AP correspondent Jennifer King has more.
Scientists are now saying the multiverse isn't just a wild theory—it might actually be real. That means our universe could be just one of many, each with its own rules, realities, and even versions of us. Some of these universes could have totally different physics, like no gravity or light that behaves in strange ways. It sounds like something straight out of a sci-fi movie, but researchers are taking it seriously. The idea comes from trying to explain some of the weird things we see in space that don't make sense with just one universe. So yeah, the multiverse isn't just real—it's way stranger than we ever imagined. Credit: Universe Evolution: By NASA / WMAP Science Team, https://map.gsfc.nasa.gov/media/03065... Scientists are saying that the Sahara Desert is expanding, and if it keeps going, it could eventually gobble up parts of Europe. They're not talking about some giant sandstorm swallowing cities whole or anything dramatic like that. It's more about how the desert is slowly spreading southward, eating up fertile land and making it harder for people to grow crops. It's a big deal because it could mess with the climate and make life a lot harder for millions of people who live nearby. Here's a mind-blowing thought: what if our entire universe is actually inside a black hole? Some scientists think it's possible, and the idea is wild. They say the Big Bang might have been the result of a black hole forming in a larger universe outside ours. Inside that black hole, the laws of physics stretched and warped to create everything we know—stars, planets, even us! It's like a cosmic Russian doll, with universes inside universes. If this theory is true, it could explain some of the biggest mysteries about how our universe works. Credit: CC BY 4.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/... Did you know gray hair might not be permanent? Scientists found out that stress can speed up hair turning gray, but it's not always a one-way street. In some cases, when people relax and stress less, their gray hair can regain its original color! Researchers believe it's because hair follicles have "color memories" and can sometimes restart producing pigment. It doesn't work for everyone, and the chances depend on age and how long the hair's been gray. But hey, it's a cool reminder that our bodies can sometimes bounce back in amazing ways! #brightside Animation is created by Bright Side. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music from TheSoul Sound: https://thesoul-sound.com/ Listen to Bright Side on: Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/0hUkPxD... Scientists have discovered that, far in the future, our Sun will go through a massive transformation! Right now, it's a stable star in the middle of its life, but billions of years from now, it will start to run out of fuel. As this happens, it'll expand into what's called a "red giant," growing up to 300 times its current size! This means it could become so big that it might swallow up the planets closest to it, like Mercury, Venus, and possibly even Earth. The Sun's outer layers will drift away, creating a beautiful shell of glowing gas called a planetary nebula. Eventually, it'll shrink back down to a small, cool star called a white dwarf, ending its long life as a faint point of light. Scientists warn that climate change is boosting the strength and rainfall from hurricanes. AP correspondent Jennifer King reports.
Twelve years ago, a group of scientists studied the way the federal government manages fish stocks. They concluded the powers of the fisheries minister must be limited. That's because past ministers routinely ignored scientific advice in favour of making politically-based decisions instead. Now, more than a decade later, the commercial cod fishery has reopened. Federal fisheries minister Diane Lebouthellier made that announcement even though scientists warn against it. Ian Fleming is a professor of ocean sciences at Memorial University, and he co-wrote that paper twelve years ago. He spoke with the CBC's Leigh Anne Power.

A controversial plan to protect the threatened California Northern Spotted Owl is official, and that means 450,000 Barred Owls in the West Coast will be killed over the next three decades. While opponents believe this strategy is cruel, scientists insist it's the most effective way to not only protect the Northern Spotted Owl population, but also the forest ecosystems where the threatened bird evolved. For a closer look, KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart spoke with Jack Dumbacher, Curator of Birds and Mammals at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco.

Climate scientists are warning methane - a highly potent greenhouse gas - is being "dangerously overlooked" when it comes to addressing global warming. Since it was first announced in 2021, more than 150 countries, including Australia, have signed up to the Global Methane Pledge. But just two per cent of climate finance goes towards slashing methane emissions.
Last week, journalist Bruce Arthur wrote a piece for the Toronto Star, quoting scientists who are afraid because of their work. People who publish research that is contrary to conservative points of view say they're being threatened and harassed -- online, and in public. They fear a potential Pierre Polievre government because they expect the pressure -- and the abuse -- to increase. Chris Turner is an author and journalist who wrote The War on Science, about the Stephen Harper years. He spoke with the CBC's Leigh Anne Power.
“All I will say is that my scientific opinion is that there is something real going on in New Brunswick that absolutely cannot be explained by the bias or personal agenda of an individual neurologist.” Those are the words of Dr. Michael Coulthart, a microbiologist employed by our federal government, specifically by Public Health Canada. He's talking about the mysterious neurological disease that is striking down people in New Brunswick. We were not supposed to read his words. They are from a leaked email obtained by Canadaland, first published by the newspaper The Guardian. Then there was another leaked email. Doctor Samuel Weiss, a neuroscientist and the scientific director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. In his leaked email, he states, “I felt incredibly optimistic that an all out government effort to unravel the mystery was in the cards. However, in short order, the scientific effort was shut down at the request of the governments.”It's nine years since the first case was documented. The numbers, by some reports, have grown to over 300 suspected cases. And we still have no answers. Some scientists suggest that certain planets, like Earth and Mars, were once flat or disk-shaped during their early formation stages. This theory proposes that through processes like collisions or tidal forces, these flat disks eventually transformed into the spherical shapes we recognize today. The concept challenges traditional ideas about planetary evolution and highlights the dynamic nature of celestial bodies. Further research and evidence gathering are necessary to better understand this hypothesis.
