Welcome to Season 12 Episode 29 of the ParentingAces Podcast, a proud member of the Tennis Channel Podcast Network. In this week's podcast, we take a deep dive into the NCAA's Name Image Likeness (NIL) rule and how tennis families can use it to their advantage throughout the Junior Tennis Journey. Joy Harris is a mom and an entrepreneur. While her two sons followed their dreams in football, she is no stranger to youth sports and the expense involved in helping your child achieve their athletic goals. Joy found a way to offset the high costs of her own children's' athletic development by helping them develop their personal brand then leveraging it into brand deals with local and national businesses. As a result, other sports parents started asking her advice to help them do the same with their young athletes. She then parlayed her knowledge and expertise into a consulting business that helps junior athletes and parents find ways to parlay their sport and other interests into income opportunities. While the NCAA NIL rule applies solely to college student-athletes, brand deals are open to athletes of all ages and stages of development. Since the cost of junior tennis development continues to increase, why not learn how you might be able to offset some of those costs while helping your child learn valuable life skills in the process? To find love and lose it, to start a life together and have it torn away, to raise a child who suddenly loses their life, to get that phone call that changes everything, to think that you had more time, only to have it stripped away by illness, tragedy, or any other means, is one of the most difficult and profound trials a person can go through. Today I am blessed to be joined by Joy Harris, who, at young age found love, and while she always knew her boyfriend had a risk of a shorter life with the cancer he was fighting, she never expected it to be over so soon. Their lives as a married couple had just started when the cancer came back with a vengeance and the good fight was lost. Join us today and hear her story of how she sought out healing and worked through the grief of losing a loved one who was gone too soon. And had to work through finding understanding and comfort and peace, to eventually find love again. Navigating infant or pregnancy loss is confusing, heartbreaking, and can feel very lonely. So many things become difficult, including simple questions like “How many kids do you have?” Since October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, I wanted to invite a guest that would be able to help the many families out there who may be walking through life after the loss of a child. I'm thrilled to introduce you to Joy Harris. Joy is a serial entrepreneur and motivational speaker who tragically lost her son, Darien, to stillbirth nearly 20 years ago. Since then, she has written a book (and companion journal) titled Missed Baby Steps: an extremely helpful resource for families that are missing all those firsts with the child they dreamed of. Joy shares some excellent advice on navigating the different phases of the grieving journey, connecting with other parents going through similar journeys, and even supporting your other children through the grief. She reminds us to validate our feelings: whether you've lost an infant or had an early miscarriage, your feelings of loss and grief are real and important to process. Most importantly, Joy reminds us that it is possible to find meaning and joy after experiencing loss. Key Takeaways with Joy Harris Navigating life after loss of an infant during or after pregnancy. Joy's advice for anyone that would like to support parents dealing with loss. The impact that can be made by connecting with other parents who experienced a similar loss to yours. The challenge of watching your other children manage grief after loss of a sibling. How moms deal with difficult questions like “How many children do you have?” The importance of honoring the memories and life of a lost child. Understanding that it is a family affair (everyone experiences the loss in one way or another). How Joy turned a tragic journey into one with meaning and purpose. Is there such a thing as consent in marriage? Is there ever a time when you can say no to your spouse? Can someone be raped in a Christian marriage? These are some of the questions we will answer with my two guests from Down Under, Joy Harris, and her son Pastor Jason Harris. Joy is a survivor of years of verbal, emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse at the hands of her now ex husband, Larry. Larry was convicted of raping his wife and was sentenced to serve a brief prison sentence. Jason, along with the rest of his 6 siblings, suffered horrible child abuse growing up as missionary kids. On Part One of this interview, Joy shares with us how she met Larry, when the abuse started, and the church culture that enabled the abuse to take place. We talk about corporal punishment vs physical abuse of a child, what does the bible say about sex in marriage, and what their Pastor did when the abuse was reported. You don't want to miss this powerful story and valuable perspective from Joy and Jason. https://www.facebook.com/jasonharrisaustralia https://twitter.com/tojasonharris.  www.thefiles.com.au  https://jasonharris.com.au/domesticviolence/ Bio: Joy studied elementary education before going on to teach at the primary school level as well as homeschooling for twenty-six years. Today, I'd like to introduce you to the authors of the upcoming book, The ABC's of Diversity: Helping Kids (And Ourselves!) Embrace Our Differences. Joining me to share some of the ABC's are Carolyn Helsel and Joy Harris-Smith.  As I was reading their book, I was struck by how compassionately Carolyn and Joy set the table to speak for these hard conversations. Their goal is to walk parents and kids through the learning process of living fully in the diversity of who we are as families and as a society. I am excited to share their work and message with you today.  Show Highlights: Conversations about identity, gender, race, or religion are not easy.  Carolyn and Joy’s work is an attempt to put forth a balanced view about how we move forward in a world that is increasingly globalized and becoming more globalized every day. Some of the challenges parents and children face when embracing diversity. Conversations don't move toward action. They are the catalysts. But at some point, you have to move beyond the dinner-table conversation.  How to practice moving from dialogue to informed action. Carolyn and Joy share some of the ABC's of Diversity from their book, including the unhelpful reactions we typically have talking about or being around people who are different.  How to address white fragility - aka exerting control over the situation as a way of dealing with your anxiety, acknowledging those automatic ABCs, and moving into a more intentional response. "We don't want people to feel bad about being fragile. We want them to move through and past the fragility." Helping children educate themselves about social media sources and encouraging them to embrace diversity within social spaces.  We explore the question, "Is it possible to have nuanced conversations that lead to real change?"   Links (affiliates included): The ABCs of Diversity: Helping Kids (and Ourselves!)
