Seoul, South Korea and travel insurance comparisons

Seoul, Korea episode Listener Story Spotlight A friend and a listener named Lois recently went to Hawaii. She told me she spent much time getting travel insurance for herself and her partner. She had to pay more than she expected as her partner was having a birthday between the day she bought the service and the day of the trip. But she said it was well worth it for her peace of mind. The FAQ for today is: Where to find the best travel insurance for a long trip abroad. 1. Start with a neutral comparison engine; you can see this in the show notes. Why use it first? Where to click Smart filters to enable It lets you price 30-day single-trip plans from dozens of underwriters side-by-side, then click through to the policy certificate in one step. Squaremouth (toggle "Comprehensive" or "Medical-only" to see apples-to-apples pricing). Squaremouth Travel Insurance Medical ≥ $100k, Evac≥ $250k, "Cancel for Any Reason" if you want maximum flexibility. Gives you consumer-written claim reviews plus AM Best financial ratings in the results grid. InsureMyTrip (same data feed as Squaremouth but different sort logic). Add "PIf relevant, existing condition waiver" if rek "Adventure sports" if you'll hike or dive. Pulls quotes from some insurers that don't feed aggregators (e.g., Allianz's higher-tier plans) and lists A.M. Best scores. TravelInsurance.com Use the "24/7 assistance" toggle to see which plans outsource helplines. Skeptical check: All three make a commission, and none of them has every carrier. Run your trip through at least two engines and see if the so-called "cheapest" plan is available.     2. Cross-reference with an independent ranking list U.S. News "Best Travel Insurance Companies 2025" ranks plans by coverage and claim-paying history—not advertising spend. It's a fast way to see which names (Travelex, Allianz, Tin Leg, etc.) consistently show up in the top tier. U.S. News     3. See what other solo women say SoloTravelerWorld.com keeps an updated "Best Travel Insurance for Solo Travelers" guide that spells out what to look for if you're traveling alone—single-supplement benefits, harassment coverage, and 24-hour crisis lines. Solo Traveler AbsolutelyLucy.com lays out five red flags that matter disproportionately to women (e.g., personal-assault medical limits, emergency contraception exclusions). Absolutely Lucy Read these before you fall for glossy Instagram ads that treat "female-friendly" as a slogan.     4. Kick the tires on the insurer's site If a plan looks good in a marketplace, open the policy certificate directly on the carrier's website (World Nomads, SafetyWing, Allianz, IMG, etc.). World Nomads publishes unfiltered claim reviews, which help sniff out chronic payout delays. World Nomads     5. Verify what your government will—or won't—do The U.S. State Department's Insurance Coverage Overseas page makes it crystal-clear that Uncle Sam does not pay your hospital bill or med-evac. It also links to the embassy medical resources for every country, which tells you how far the nearest trauma center is from your trekking trail. Travel.gov     6. Double-check your credit-card benefits Cards in your wallet may cover trip delays, baggage loss, or secondary car rental insurance. The Points Guy keeps a running tally of cards whose built-in coverage is worth something and where the gaps are (e.g., no medical evacuation).     How to use these resources efficiently Quote your exact dates (don't round your trip to a calendar month; excess days add cost). Filter for medical & Evac first; those two benefits can bankrupt you. Ignore marketing buzzwords like "explorer" or "adventure" until you've opened the PDF certificate and searched for the activity you plan to do. Run your final four shortlist past recent claim reviews (Squaremouth, Trustpilot, Reddit r/solotravel) to see if the carrier ghosted people during COVID or the Israel–Gaza cancellations. You can purchase directly from the insurer once you've chosen, which avoids aggregator change fees if you need to modify dates. Stay curious, question every "Top 10" list's methodology, and you'll land the coverage that fits your risk profile—nothing more, nothing less. 60-second confidence challenge 3 things: neighborhood selection, daylight itineraries, scam avoidance Select walkable neighborhoods with public transportation nearby if you don't drive. Read reviews on the AirBNB website before you select. When booking a flight or train, be sure it arrives at daylight, which can differ in winter months. If it comes after dark, it will be more challenging.  To avoid scams, be cautious when choosing passwords, logging out of websites, and making online purchases. These are very typical scams. If you are suspicious, you may be right to avoid that vendor and choose another. Don't look like a target, either.   If you like today's Confidence Challenge, Chapter 1 of my book dives deeper—https://www.5stepstosolotravel.com   See Book A for addressing all of these items. Find it on the website or Amazon. It's a series. Today's destination is:  South Korea  I visited South Korea last month. I landed at Seoul's Inchon Airport. My Korean pronunciation is not good, so please understand that as I describe my trip. I was excited to see the city through the eyes of my friend Chris. We were whisked away to a hotpot dinner, then taken to the French neighborhood in Seoul, where we rested for the night. The next morning, we drove south to visit a town about 2 hours away and stayed in Wolbong-ro (Road), in Seobuk-gu, near SeongJeong.   For example, the Seoul Noryyanglin Fisheries Wholesale Market is five stories tall and open to the public. It's worth seeing if you like seafood, and you can roam the aisles looking for your favorite fish delicacies.   I visited the Vovo Bidet company and met with the director and some of his team. Have you seen the #1 Bidet firm in Korea? They have retail and wholesale offices in the Los Angeles area, too. I liked the tour of the offices here in Seoul. They even have a Bidet to go. Think about that for a minute. That was in Daebang-dong or Seocho4-dong. I visited retail stores such as Zara, one of my favorites for fashion. I had Chinese, Japanese, and Fusion foods. I took subways, busses, taxis, and Ubers plus trains. I went to Gwannghumun Square, the purple Station #9. I went to the shopping mall called The Hyundai. and found stores like Zanmang Loopy, the Hyundai Present, and a great coffee and tea shop. I learned about Hanguel, the Korean alphabet, and saw the statue of Sejong the Great. There was also another statue of Admiral YiSun Sin. The Bukchon Honok Village is a quiet residential area. Jogyasa Temple is where you will see Buddism. Hongdae is the neighborhood for independent artists.   Yonsei University was a place I wanted to visit next time, as I was in the neighborhood and liked it a lot. Gangnam style, well, maybe next time. I tried new foods, such as mung bean pancakes and hotleok desserts. We had a wonderful dinner at Sushi-ya Shabu-ya, about an hour from Seoul, near Korea Nazarene University in Cheonan-si-Buldang1-dong. Recommended: Relax in a tea house. Smart Move and Slip up pairings In Korea, we were departing from the airport without enough money on our transit cards, so we could not enter the building. Instead, we had to see the office at the kiosk and pay for the train. It was not much, but it did take a few minutes. We arrived well ahead of the recommended 3 hours, so that was not an issue. 60 second confidence challenge Do you or don't you tip? Not in South Korea. But it's always smart to ask. Be confident when you know what the expectations are.   Resources Roundup   If you are looking for more solo female travel resources, you can find several tips and ways to navigate the pitfalls, such as paying the difference on the transit card when you go long distances or knowing when to tip.   When you get lost, don't get upset. Get found. You will be better off if you cool down instead of heating your brain incorrectly. Chill, and you'll be found sooner. Dr. Travelbest's tip #760.

Nuala is joined by social worker Jo Ritchie, who is employed by Barnardo's, and sex work liaison officer Rose Brown.Model Leomie Anderson was just 14 when she was scouted, and has since gone on to work with fashion houses like Burberry, Giorgio Armani and Vivienne Westwood. Leomie joins Nuala in the studio.More women than ever are deciding to not wait for friends, or family, to go on an adventure. The hashtag #Solotravel has over 5 million posts across TikTok and Instagram and in a recent Press Association interview Hostelworld's CEO, Gary Morrison, said that a surge in solo travellers - especially young female backpackers - is reshaping the travel industry. So, is 2025 the year of the solo female traveller? Journalist Chanté Joseph and Solo in Style creator, Deborah Ives, tell Nuala why women are deciding to go on holiday alone.Women in the North of England can expect to live fewer years in good health, are more likely to be unable to work due to long-term sickness and disability and are losing out in terms of wages, compared to other areas of England, according to new analysis. Health Equity North academics studied the latest available data to see whether there have been improvements in the inequalities faced by northern women since the publication of last year's damning Woman of the North report. Nuala discusses the findings with Professor Clare Bambra of Newcastle University and co-director of Health Equity North. We have an update from Tilly Cripwell about her campaign to protect the Molly Malone statue in Dublin.Presenter: Nuala McGovern Producer: Emma Pearce

Delhi, India Part 2 In this episode, your FAQ is: Safety in India for solo travelers Today's Destination is: Delhi, India. Part 2 Today's Misstep- Cellphone issues that were my fault and more Travel Advice: Safety tips for travel in Delhi. FAQ: Let's talk about safety in India. My friend Kathryn is going to Delhi and is worried about being a solo woman. Can I talk to her about what she can expect? The short answer is that Kathryn is already back home, and she had a great trip, but she was nervous and needed confirmation that all would be well. Today's destination: Delhi, India Part 2 One of the best parts of India…and Aero City Let's discuss a region of Delhi called Aero City.  It's really close, just minutes from the airport. Indira Gandhi International Airport, that is. It's well connected to the rest of the city through the Airport Metro Line. And you can get to places in the center of Delhi, like Connaught Place, in about 25 minutes. Aerocity is a top priority for safety and security for female travelers, with state-of-the-art cameras, staff, and surveillance. The hotels and surrounding public spaces are really nice. Aero City was full of what's new about India. There are hotels, shopping centers, and restaurants. I felt Safe being here. I took the AirPort Express Metro to Aero City and walked for about 6 minutes in the 105-degree heat. Drenched in sweat, the pool was on my mind when I arrived! It made the walk bearable! There were girls and sisters in the pool, my new friends, ages 8 and 11. They were in the room next to me and on School holidays in Dehli—a break for the families and fun for me.  Today's Misstep: Cellphone issues:  Here is when I discovered my cellphone issues with Airalo and why my WhatsApp was not working! India is not in the Asia plan! That was my failure! I did not have internet service when out of Wi-Fi coverage in India.  Something with the eSIM, Airalo plan, which was not covered under “All Asia”. I need to tell them to label that better. If you want to sign up for the plan I have used worldwide, get $3.0ff with the code MARY2856.  Today's Travel Advice- Dehli Safety Tips Dress Conservatively: Especially in urban villages and when visiting religious sites Avoid Crowded Areas at Night: Stick to well-lit and populated areas, and avoid walking alone at night Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Keep an eye on your belongings and be cautious of pickpockets and scams Use Trusted Transportation: Prefer pre-paid taxis, Uber, or Ola, and avoid accepting rides from unknown drivers Act Confident: Walk with confidence and firmly decline any unwanted attention or offers Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube In the news

Delhi, India Part 1  In this episode, the FAQ is: My listeners ask: How do I check for the weather where I'm going?    Today's Destination is: Delhi, India   Today's Misstep- Stuck in India and missed the bus   Travel Advice: Ask a group of people for directions   FAQ: You asked me how to get the most reliable weather forecast:   Here's how> Use apps like AccuWeather, weather.com, and windy or local services, with hourly and long-range forecasts, radar maps, and severe weather alerts. For more local alerts, sign up for location-based apps on Google Weather or MyRadar.  Look for seasonal patterns that are already known. Goa, India has monsoons from June to September. Wind and rain forecasts like windy.com will tell you the wind and wave conditions, especially to help with beach plans. Check for Cyclone Warnings in places like coastal India.   Answer: Reliable Weather Apps and Websites: For accurate forecasts, use apps like AccuWeather, Weather.com, Windy, or local Indian weather services (like IMD). Many offer hourly and long-range forecasts, radar maps, and severe weather alerts. Localized Alerts: Sign up for location-based alerts on apps like Google Weather or MyRadar, which provide real-time weather updates for your location. This can be especially helpful for any sudden coastal storms or cyclones. Seasonal Patterns: Since you're going to Goa or nearby coastal regions, familiarize yourself with local weather patterns. For example, Goa experiences the monsoon season from June to September, with dry and sunny weather from October to March. Wind and Rain Forecasts: Coastal areas are affected by both rain and wind speed. Windy.com offers detailed wind and wave conditions, which can help with beach plans. Check for Cyclone Warnings: Especially in coastal India, monitor IMD's cyclone warnings as they provide updates on tropical storms that may affect Goa. Lastly, social media can help by using WhatsApp groups to get firsthand information from locals. Today's destination: Delhi, India Part 1 My visit to Delhi, or New Delhi, India  Which is it? New Delhi when referring to the specific district that serves as India's capital. New Delhi is a planned city developed during British rule and officially designated as the capital in 1931. Delhi refers to the larger metropolitan area, encompassing both New Delhi and other historical and residential parts like Old Delhi, which includes the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. Delhi is the correct term when speaking broadly about the city and its culture, so we will use that one here. After two weeks in India, visiting four southern cities, I flew north to Dehli from Goa, barely missing the seasonal monsoons. My flight had a Female co-pilot who Said hello to me with a big smile, which made me happy to see a woman pilot there.   The flight attendants checked my boarding tickets. Again, getting off the plane! That was a first. Who checks them getting off the plane? Should I take a Bus, train, or taxi to Agra? Even after arriving, I could not decide. I was overwhelmed with the decisions, but I knew I had to get there.  A taxi costs at least $6000 rupees each way, maybe more. Although this sounded like a lot, it was only $72 USD. Bus or train may be best. However, the temperature is

Ever wondered what it would be like to cycle through Africa? Well this is part 1 of a special 2 part episode featuring guest Rob MacLennan who in 2023 cycled from his home in the UK to Cape Town in South Africa. A journey of over 17,000kms and infinitely more experiences. In Part 1 Rob will share with us how he prepared for such a trip as a complete beginner, what he packed, how he worked out his route and some of the key experiences along the way. He crossed through Europe via France and Spain, and it was really from Morocco that the real adventure began. From there he cycled down through the Sahara desert - discovering the joy of melon milk! He also learnt how to push his limits, realising he was capable of more than he thought. He enjoyed exploring through West Africa, observing local life, battling terrible roads in Guinea while also enjoying some of the best coffee there.  Then in Nigeria things took a serious turn when at Christmas Rob found himself held at gunpoint by militia who mistook him for a government spy. His recollections from this harrowing event were eye opening - but as Rob said, were in no way the narrative that his journey need be remembered by. You can follow Rob via his instagram account - @Robbo_On_The_Road and be sure to tune in next week for part 2 to hear the rest of this incredible story. Celebrate our 100th episode with guest Madeline Hoffmann, as she shares her incredible cycle tour from Germany to Australia.I first featured Madeline for episode no. 1 of the podcast, in January 2023, when she had just arrived in Türkiye, having cycled there from Germany to meet her father for the very first time. In this episode I pick up where we left off, and hear Madeline's experiences after leaving her father's home, and cycling all the way back to Sydney, Australia. All up Madeline's journey took her through 23 countries over 15 months and we reflect on the adventures, challenges, and transformative experiences she encountered all along the way.  This journey wasn't all smooth sailing, she faced numerous challenges and setbacks.  When her visa for Iran was denied she instead chose to cycle home via the Middle East, which entailed cycling through the heat and desert of Saudi Arabia. On leaving the Gulf region she then continued in Pakistan and India, and it was while cycling in the high Himalayas that she was struck with a painful illness. She'd contracted  Chikungunya - a mosquito borne virus, which sparked reactive arthritis throughout her body. But despite this Madeline continued her journey through S.E Asia, before finally finishing off the final leg of her journey from Brisbane to Sydney. Dr Mary Travelbest Guide

In this episode, the FAQ is: How do I manage increasing technology and security for travel?   Today's Destination is: Milan, Italy   Today's Misstep- I almost took a train to Switzerland at the Milan station   Travel Advice: Bring a handheld portable fan for the heat. It can be oppressive.   FAQ: The level of technology and security has stepped up for travel and entertainment. How do I manage it as a senior citizen in a very busy world?   Answer:    There is a growing level of distrust in today's environment. For some venues, you can no longer use a screenshot of a QR code to access a ticket, so it must be a live link if you don't have the paper ticket. If you are not on Wi-Fi, you may have trouble accessing the venue, like I did in July at the Symphony, where we used handwritten paper tickets.  The Crowdstrike tech shutdown of computers in July 2024, with thousands of airline flights canceled, was a peek into what could be an even longer period of shutting down air travel, train travel, and more. So, you need to develop options for adapting your transportation.  Get educated. The questions will keep coming, but you can figure it out. Keep listening here for more confidence-building guidance.   Today's destination: Milan, Italy   Milan is in northern Italy and is known for its history, culture, and fashion. Many styles originate here, so people-watching is a favorite activity.   The famous Duomo Cathedral, a Catholic Church, is in the city's center. I walked around twice to get the full picture and people-watch. I also did some pigeon watching, as there were plenty of them here in this vast square, filled with tourists in the middle of July. Metro stops were plentiful below the square, and the church filled the plaza. People are walking above the church's structure, near the roof, and you can see them below.  Shopping: You can shop at great stores, especially in the Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele II. It's great even just for looking for fashion ideas.     Tip 2: Don't be afraid to ask for help.     Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube In the news

In this episode, the FAQ is: What are the best theme parks for those in their Prime Years? Today's Destination is: Istanbul, Turkey (part 1 of 2) Today's Misstep- Ask for specific directions and then listen better. Travel Advice: Get a better exchange rate than in a busy tourist city. FAQ:  What are the best theme parks for those in their Prime Years? Answer: I think the best theme parks for adults are the Disney ones. They have been friendly for generations, and you can always find someone to answer your questions, i.e., a cast member. You will pay more than for other parks, but you have the franchise behind you to almost guarantee you a good visit. Prepare ahead of time with any needs you have for accommodations. My friend Ron was in a wheelchair there recently and agreed that the multi-generation experience was good for him. Listen to some of my previous podcasts about Disneyland and California Adventure. Today's destination: Istanbul, Turkey https://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g293974-Istanbul-Vacations.html   Turkey was a different type of experience, and I highly recommend you go there if you want to see some variety of culture. It is different from most places I have been to in my life. Yes, I did find someone selling carpets, so I will share that later in the episode. I was in Turkey for 7 nights. First, it is centrally located near Taxsim Square at the Wabi Sabi Hostel for four nights, then the Second Home for two nights, plus the Airbnb with “Miss” for one night. With all my travel, I managed a budget one-hour massage, which I highly recommend here. Here's a Carpet store tale: I was asking for directions and encountered a man named Burak Solak who worked at the Red Apple Carpet store. He sells carpets, purses, and jewelry at his uncle's store. I told him to put an apple sign out front, but he disagreed. What do you think? If you are solo like me, I recommend the day Tours: Try one of the Hop-on-hop-off $40 for 24 hours. Stretch that over two days so you can do a half trip in the PM and the rest in the next AM.  Museums: The Cistern Museum was an underground water system where you could see all the remnants from centuries ago. It cost $22 to explore and was cooler than the outside baking heat of the day, so it was refreshing. https://mshiddengarden.com/  Today's Misstep: Ask for specific directions, listen better, and exchange rates.   My missteps in Turkey   Missing the pickup point: I was getting off the hop-on-hop off the bus and should have been more specific about the pickup point. The driver pointed, but I did not pay attention. That caused me a lot of confusion. It was probably the busiest part of the city and under construction. I was dangerously lost and finally found someone to help me out after walking back and forth for a long time. It was maybe 30 minutes, but the heat was strong, so I was stressed. Next time, ask for the pickup point. Second mistake: Don't try to exchange your cash in any Turkish currency exchange in Istanbul. I got 12 euros for $20 US, which is not a good exchange rate. I should have brought my debit card. Don't make my mistake.   Today's Travel Advice- Money Exchange Woes   Don't try to exchange your cash in any Turkish currency exchange. This is Bucket List Travel, a special series within the podcast Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide. This is Carolyn Ray, CEO and editor of JourneyWoman, a women's solo travel publication based in Toronto. I'm going to share some tips and advice about my hometown with you. I'm actually a sixth-generation Torontonian, and my daughter is a seventh-generation Torontonian.     So this is my hometown, and I can tell you, if you're looking for an exciting, vibrant city, Toronto is it. We are, you might be surprised, the fourth largest city in North America, and very easy to get to from just about anywhere in the world. Toronto is a great getaway for those living in Canada and a steal for women coming from other countries because of our Canadian dollar. So you'll find a lot of value coming here for your money,    I want to share with you a bit about how to get to Toronto, which may surprise you. Of course, you may know about Toronto Pearson Airport, our international airport, but we also have a smaller island airport called the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, which is right downtown. So if you can get a flight into Toronto Island, that's much easier.    But if you are flying into Toronto, Pearson, we have a wonderful train called the UP Express, which will get you downtown in about 25 minutes. If you are arriving at Union Station, you can get right on our subway system, the TTC, the Toronto Transit Commission. And it's very, very easy to get around on the TTC. It's a U-shaped route that goes north, just kind of starts at Union Station, and goes up both ways. And then there's an east, west route across the city at Bloor Street, which is B, L, O, O, R, we're building some more subways. You'll notice that when you're in town, and because of that, I just want to speak to a little bit about safety on the subways. Toronto is a very large city, and I just want to encourage you to be very aware. I know everyone thinks Canadians are very nice, but I also just want to remind you to be very self-aware when you're on the subways and on public transit.   For things to do in Toronto, my number one experience would be to go to Toronto Island. It's very easy to get there on a ferry, and you can take a ferry over for the day. You can ride a bike, enjoy the beaches, or even get on a boat.   If you are looking for a place to stay, there are many different kinds of hotels in Toronto, but I will say one of my favorites is the Fairmont Royal York, which is right across from Union Station. But I also like some of our boutique hotels, the Gladstone, the Drake, the Broadview Hotel. These are very lovely, locally owned hotels, creative, artsy, with really great rooftop restaurants and great views.   I'll end with some tips on places to eat that you may not know about. I really love Spanish food, so I wanted to recommend Madrina y tapas and Patria. Patria is on King West, which is a very popular place to go for bars and restaurants. The Distillery District is one of our historic areas in Toronto, it's a wonderful place to walk around and spend the day. And Madrina y tapas is one of my favorite restaurants there. There's also Yorkville, which is on at Bloor and Yonge Street. Kasa Moto is a Japanese restaurant that I would suggest there. And a secret you may not have heard of, this one is called Scaramouche, and it's a little bit farther north, but you can get wonderful views of the entire city. It's actually in a condominium, and you can see all of Toronto at night. It's lovely. And for those of us who like vegetarian food, it's Planta. There are two Planta locations in Toronto, maybe more now, great vegetarian menu. And of course, I must mention the St Lawrence Market, which has all, you know, all of the fresh food you could ever want. But also in the basement Manotas, which is a Spanish takeaway restaurant, and then also Busters, which is at the back of the St Lawrence Market, where you can get some wonderful seafood.   Whatever you're doing in Toronto, I hope you have a great time. There's so much to do. There's so much to see, and I look forward to seeing you there. And if there's more information need about Toronto, please visit JourneyWoman.com. We've got lots of articles about the city.  Thank you, Carolyn Ray and Journey Woman for this excellent episode. Imagine setting off for a bicycle tour from Europe, destination the other side of the world. Well in this episode I speak with guest Laura Willerton who has done exactly that.  Her journey started as a team of two,  with her then boyfriend Bruno.  They parted company part way through the trip, but Laura has chosen to continue on this journey solo.Laura shares her experiences of cycling through various countries, the challenges she faced, and the incredible hospitality she encountered along the way. From the initial anxiety of tackling Central Asia's daunting terrains to the heartwarming kindness of strangers offering melons, meals and a place to stay for the night. This hospitality has been a constant on this tour.Laura's journey also highlights the importance of mental strength in cycling. She discusses how she has learned to find peace with her own thoughts during long, solitary rides and how these moments have helped her grow as an individual. Her story is a great reminder that many times the journey is as much about self-discovery as it is about the physical act of cycling. You can follow Laura on her instagram account - @OnOurBicycles and check out the informative website: https://onourbicycles.com/Click to send me a text message and let me know what you think of the showSupport the Show.Enjoying Seek Travel Ride? Florence, Italy Part 1   Welcome to Dr. Mary Travelbest's 5 Steps to Solo Travel Guide  The FAQ is: My friend Jean asked about recommendations for the best rental car deals.  Today's Destination is Florence, Italy. Part 1 Today's Misstep-  Legal troubles: I was caught in Florence without a bus ticket and fined 42.5 euros. Travel Advice: Bring an umbrella for shade FAQ: My friend Jean asked for recommendations for the best rental car deals this year. She says it used to cost more if you picked it up at the airport, but now it's the opposite. She's asking for the best deals, whether AAA, Sam's Club, Expedia, Kayak, Booking, etc. They all seem extra high to her. Answer: Yes, the car rental business is doing well these days. I remember when, during COVID-19, I booked a car in Denver for eight days for $32. No longer is that the case. My best thing is to shop around and keep shopping. Finding your best deal may take a few or even 30 minutes, but it's worth waiting. I have used all the options mentioned here, plus Turo, which is like Airbnb for cars. They all have plusses but check to ensure you have the car you need a few days before you travel. I just checked with my Turo for next weekend in Ohio, and the host says the car was in an accident, so it's unavailable, but Turo did not inform me. So, I contacted Turo, and they helped me re-book a different car. Expect prices to be high in peak times like summer and holidays and destinations like Chicago. Consider cutting the number of days you're renting your car, so only for the days you need it, and use public transportation, Uber/Lyft, or walking on the other days if possible.   Today's destination: Florence, Italy Part 1 Art Galleries: Ticketed entries: https://www.destinationflorence.com/en/blog/401-tours-and-activities-for-solo-travellers-in-florence https://10best.usatoday.com/destinations/italy/florence/florence/restaurants/gusta-pizza/   http://www.museumsinflorence.com/musei/museum_of_bargello.html   Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube In the news

Today's Destination: Chickamauga National Park: Part 2 of Chattanooga episode. Today's Misstep- Driving over hills, a tire came at us Travel Advice: What exercises should I do when I travel?   FAQ: What do you wish you knew before booking your flight?   Response: A few more questions you can ask someone before you plan your trip are:  Did you experience any frustrations related to the destination or the actual traveling? If so, what should people be aware of to avoid those frustrations, hopefully? What websites or services were the most helpful for planning/booking your trip? What advice would you give someone going there for the first time? What was the most enjoyable or relaxing part of your trip?   Today's destination: Chickamauga National Park Part 2 of the Chattanooga series It's officially called Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park near Lookout Mountain. Use your National Park Pass for free entry. http://cityofchickamauga.org/ When I first visited Point Park, I explored this area on the border of Georgia and Tennessee for about an hour. It's across from the visitor center and was built by the Army Corps of Engineers.  You can see artillery from the Confederate fighting. The Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863, marked the end of a Union offensive in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia called the Chickamauga Campaign. The battle was the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. It involved the second-highest number of casualties in the war, following the Battle of Gettysburg. It was the first major battle of the war in Georgia. The battle was fought between the Army of the Cumberland under Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans and the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Gen. Braxton Bragg, and was named for Chickamauga Creek, which meanders near the battle area in northwest Georgia (and ultimately flows into the Tennessee River about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northeast of downtown Chattanooga) There is also a monument to peace, The New York Peace Monument, symbolizing reunification and reconciliation.    http://cityofchickamauga.org/about-history-chickamaugabattlefield.asp Look for marble and pink granite materials. Visit the museum at Ochs Memorial Observatory for views of the Chattanooga area from the terrace. You can continue hiking the trails to other scenic views from Lookout Mountain. I first visited this area on a bus trip with my high school friends in the 1970s, and this was my first visit to return.  I drove the two hours from Atlanta through some small towns and highways and finally to some neighborhoods and scenic drives. When you get to the neighborhood, you will drive on windy roads that take your breath away.  This is a Step 1 or Step 2 destination and easy to explore independently. There is also a cute Visitor Center with restrooms and a small museum. The awe-inspiring view from Lookout Mountain Battlefield over Point Park shows a bird' s-eye view of the Tennessee River and how it bends, a bit like a foot at the ankle. You see the city of Chattanooga from above when you go around the bend. You can even see the three bridges that cross the river to the town. The battlefield here was memorable, and you can follow the signs for the Chickamauga Battlefield Tour. Or you can just enjoy walking the grounds around the peace monument and listening to the birds chirping. It's an excellent way to enjoy your day in Georgia or Tennessee.   http://cityofchickamauga.org/about-history-trainmuseum.asp Today's Misstep- Driving on the road over hills, a tire came rolling at us and hit our car. You're generally safe from tires in a car, but this tire stopped us. We hit the tire and could not drive any further. We got a tow truck to bring the car home, about 200 miles away. It was an expensive tow, and I hope you don't have that experience.  Today's Travel Advice- What exercises should I do when I travel? Try to stay as active as you are when home, which means you should try to maintain the same levels of activities, even if you are on the road a lot. You may need to take frequent breaks in your drive to stretch, walk a bit, and even do more intensive exercise. Stretch every two hours on a plane or train. I try to find a pool where I can swim anytime I travel. I am a member of the YMCA, where I can go anytime. There are more than 2700 YMCAs in the USA and also in 120 countries around the world. That's how we both can keep our exercise routines when we travel.    Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube In the news
