On this episode, we are joined by Susan Heinrich from Midlife Globetrotter. Susan is a Canadian writer living in Denver, Colorado. She is passionate about travel and supporting women in tourism. In 2020, she created Midlife Globetrotter, a website and platform that helps women over 40 follow their travel dreams to new places, with destination guides, practical tips and stories of her own adventures. Susan is passionate about reframing midlife as an opportunity, and explores themes of reinvention and self-discovery in her work.  You can follow Susan on Instagramand Pinterest. In this episode, we talk about group tours and group tour operators, especially those that offer group trips just for women. To learn more, see Susan's blog posts about: Women's tours around the world: https://midlifeglobetrotter.com/womens-tours/ How to select a small group tour: https://midlifeglobetrotter.com/how-to-select-a-small-group-tour/ Croatia group tour with Adventure Women: https://midlifeglobetrotter.com/a-womens-sailing-trip-in-croatia/ Episode Highlights Some things to think about when choosing a group tour include: What is the pacing of the trip -- is there any free time, how often do you switch hotels? What is the group size? Small group tends to be under 14 people. Small groups have advantages in terms of the type of accommodation and the size of the tour group when exploring cities What is the activity level? Some companies like Adventure Women and Adventures in Good Company specialize in active trips and offer detailed explanations of the activity level involved in the trip If you are traveling solo, you can also look for tours that are only solo travelers When you are evaluating a group tour, be sure to read the itinerary in detail. You can also call the tour operator and see if they can give you any information on how many solo travelers there might be versus those traveling with a friend or relative. Also look at what the single supplement is. Some companies like Girls Guide to the World have private rooms by default but typically group tours are priced based on double occupancy and if you want your own room they charge a single supplement. Some companies will pair you with another solo travel as a roommate if they don't charge a single supplement. Be sure to read through the documents to understand what is included in terms of transfers and meals Understand who is guiding the trip -- is it a local or a U.S.-based guide Make sure you understand the cancellation policy and buy travel insurance If you aren't sure if a group trip is for you, opt for a private room, start with a shorter trip, feel free to opt out of activities, and maybe start with a trip in the U.S. that doesn't require a more expensive airfare. If you just want to relax or if you don't like having scheduled activities, then a group tour may not be a good fit Good tour operators for budget travelers include G Adventures (now have tours for women and certain age groups) and Intrepid Travel (who have women expeditions to places where you can meet and interact with locals in a way that you couldn't if there were men on the trip) For a luxury trip, Girls Guide to the World is a good fit and Insight Vacations is upscale and have women-only trips For nature and wildlife, Natural Habitat Adventures partner with the World Wildlife Federation and are known for wildlife trips and have women's only expeditions Adventure Women is one of the first companies to get into women only tours and typically offer four-star accommodations with active adventures Backroads is known for cycling and hiking tours and offers some just for women and they have trips that accommodate a variety of activity levels each day There are also group tour operators focused on certain destinations like Viking Women in Iceland Another themed tour is the British Book Club Tour: https://thebookclubtour.com Susan is also co-hosting an art-history based trip to Paris this spring Some women-only focused travel companies and others that have women-only trips Next Chapter Travel - small group, curated trips in Europe Next Tribe - over 45 women Gals Abroad Getaways - luxury Untethered Expeditions - adventure Adventure Women - small group adventure Adventures in Good Company - active  Girls' Guide to the World - authentic, responsible (luxury) Sisterhood Travels - over 50 Country Walkers - walking/hiking Scout Escapes - mother daughter travel and group trips for women over 40 Viking Women - Iceland Explorer Chick - hiking and adventure in National Parks and abroad Insight Vacations - upscale group trips some women only Backroads - women only hiking and cycling Road Scholar - educational, some women only, over 50 Uniworld - women's cruises

In November, Kim and Tamara took a trip to Turkey for a travel writer's conference. After their time in Istanbul, they jetted off to different parts of the country to see more of Turkiye. This week, Kim shares her experience in Cappadocia and offers up tips for anyone that wants to experience this magical world of fairy chimneys and sunrise hot air balloon rides. Episode Highlights Plan to stay in Cappadocia at least four days It pairs well with three to four days in Istanbul (it is about a 2 hour flight from Istanbul) Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) is the main airport for the region Cappadocia is not a town but region that is made up of multiple towns Going up in a hot air balloon is a bucket list experience for many but sometimes flights are cancelled because of various weather conditions so you want to leave some extra time in case you need to reschedule Göreme is the main town and definitely a tourist town If you want something quieter, you can stay in Uçhisar Kim stayed in Ürgüp at the Avant Garde Cave Hotel The Pigeon Valley Hike goes from Uchisar through the National Park to Goreme (about 3 miles) The Valley is where all the balloons fly above Göreme also has beautiful sunsets Goreme National Park is where you will find all the fairy chimneys or hoodoos You can book a balloon ride through your hotel or online, there are many tour operators that offer balloon rides Departure time depends on the time of year, but it is usually fairly early morning The balloons are big with large baskets that hold at least 20 people, with 4-5 people in each section Make sure you have a lanyard or strap for your phone or camera The pilots take photos and then sell you the photo package if you want at the end of the ride At the end there is a light breakfast and champagne but no tables or chairs They pick you up and drop you off at your hotel Use AllTrails to find and download nearby hiking trails The Goreme Open Air Museum gives you access to some of the ancient churches You can have a hammam experience for a traditional Turkish bath Pack layers and shoes or hiking boots with a good grip Stay tuned for our next episode about some of our favorite Spring Break destinations! Today I'm talking with Doni Belau. Doni fell in love with Paris when her sister took her there as a high school graduation gift. She knew then Paris and traveling would need to be a part of her life. After a girl's trip to Paris one year with friends, a light bulb went on. Doni realized something magical happens when a small group of women travel together to a place of great beauty and culture. So in 2009, she started Girls' Guide to the World. So she no longer had to choose between what she did and what she loved. In this episode, the FAQ is: What are the best theme parks for those in their Prime Years? Today's Destination is: Istanbul, Turkey (part 1 of 2) Today's Misstep- Ask for specific directions and then listen better. Travel Advice: Get a better exchange rate than in a busy tourist city. FAQ:  What are the best theme parks for those in their Prime Years? Answer: I think the best theme parks for adults are the Disney ones. They have been friendly for generations, and you can always find someone to answer your questions, i.e., a cast member. You will pay more than for other parks, but you have the franchise behind you to almost guarantee you a good visit. Prepare ahead of time with any needs you have for accommodations. My friend Ron was in a wheelchair there recently and agreed that the multi-generation experience was good for him. Listen to some of my previous podcasts about Disneyland and California Adventure. Today's destination: Istanbul, Turkey https://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g293974-Istanbul-Vacations.html   Turkey was a different type of experience, and I highly recommend you go there if you want to see some variety of culture. It is different from most places I have been to in my life. Yes, I did find someone selling carpets, so I will share that later in the episode. I was in Turkey for 7 nights. First, it is centrally located near Taxsim Square at the Wabi Sabi Hostel for four nights, then the Second Home for two nights, plus the Airbnb with “Miss” for one night. With all my travel, I managed a budget one-hour massage, which I highly recommend here. Here's a Carpet store tale: I was asking for directions and encountered a man named Burak Solak who worked at the Red Apple Carpet store. He sells carpets, purses, and jewelry at his uncle's store. I told him to put an apple sign out front, but he disagreed. What do you think? If you are solo like me, I recommend the day Tours: Try one of the Hop-on-hop-off $40 for 24 hours. Stretch that over two days so you can do a half trip in the PM and the rest in the next AM.  Museums: The Cistern Museum was an underground water system where you could see all the remnants from centuries ago. It cost $22 to explore and was cooler than the outside baking heat of the day, so it was refreshing. https://mshiddengarden.com/  Today's Misstep: Ask for specific directions, listen better, and exchange rates.   My missteps in Turkey   Missing the pickup point: I was getting off the hop-on-hop off the bus and should have been more specific about the pickup point. The driver pointed, but I did not pay attention. That caused me a lot of confusion. It was probably the busiest part of the city and under construction. I was dangerously lost and finally found someone to help me out after walking back and forth for a long time. It was maybe 30 minutes, but the heat was strong, so I was stressed. Next time, ask for the pickup point. Second mistake: Don't try to exchange your cash in any Turkish currency exchange in Istanbul. I got 12 euros for $20 US, which is not a good exchange rate. I should have brought my debit card. Don't make my mistake.   Today's Travel Advice- Money Exchange Woes   Don't try to exchange your cash in any Turkish currency exchange. Episode Naples, Italy Part 1   In this episode, the FAQ is: How do I get to and from the airport? I am an inexperienced flyer and need to know how to get there and back if I don't take a taxi or Uber/Lyft, which can be very expensive.   Today's Destination is Naples, Italy Part 1   Today's Misstep- I took the Subway in the wrong direction.    Travel Advice: Use Chat GPT for travel ideas, but verify the results       Today's destination: Naples, Italy Part 1   Naples, Napoli is about an hour from Rome by train. It's an Under-rated city. Some rough edges may exist, but give it a chance. It's a city not to be missed. It's a Step 5 trip because you need to be experienced as a traveler to be here solo.   https://www.lonelyplanet.com/italy/campania/naples My new Servas friend Rossana has lived in the Vomero neighborhood for 20 years. Here's some more background. The third-largest city in Italy is full of history, art, architecture, and delicious food, yet it gets a bad rap for its crime and grime. While these blemishes are a reality for residents, they're far from ubiquitous, especially where tourism concerns them. Find higher ground at places like Certosa e Museo di San Martino, and you'll be rewarded with spectacular views. Stroll the Via Caracciolo e Lungomare di Napoli as I did for a full day, or chat with friendly locals like Rossana, and you'll experience some of the magic this port city holds. And, of course, you can't forget the joy that comes from that first bite of Neapolitan pizza (in the city credited with inventing the pizza), nor that perfect gelato.  https://www.amoitaly.com/napoli/vomero.html   The Art Stations, distributed along Metro lines 1 and 6, include more than 180 pieces of art created by 90 international authors and local architects, allowing them to combine different architectural styles. I often used the Quattro Giordano metro stop. If you don't ride the subway, you miss all of these.   Mappatella Beach is where I went swimming along the coast. Via Chiaia (Vee-ya, Kaya heeya) district is a high-end and strolling area.   https://www.visititaly.eu/places-and-tours/district-chiaia-naples Art Museum with Toledo. https://www.lonelyplanet.com/italy/naples/toledo-quartieri-spagnoli-1342344/attractions/museo-archeologico-nazionale/a/poi-sig/422621/1342344   Beautiful old and pop art. Don't make my mistake. Ask if there's another level before you board the wrong train. And if you are wrong, you can always go back the other direction. Today's Travel Advice- Use Chat GPT for travel ideas, but verify the results   In previous podcasts, I mentioned how to use Chat GPT for travel. If you're not using it, you could miss out on some great hidden gems for your travel. I bet your tour guides use this tool to learn some secrets and factoids for their upcoming tours. This episode's FAQ is: Do I need a local SIM card? Today's Destination is The Dead Sea and Masada, Israel Today's Misstep- Screenshot your MAP before you travel Travel Advice: Wear a money belt. FAQ: Do I need a local SIM card? Response: When you travel abroad, you don't need a local SIM card anymore. It's found in nearly every airport and is expensive, but you get your own phone number. It does involve opening your phone up.   Read the show notes if you want to try an esim and need help. I've been using an esim called Airalo for a year, and I have a referral code for you to save $3.00. It is MARY2856.   https://www.airalo.com/blog/roaming-vs-international-sim-card-vs-local-sim-card-heres-what-to-know     Today's destination: Israel (split into three parts, Jerusalem, Dead Sea/ Masada, and Tel Aviv. This episode is part 2 of three.   Because I was a solo female traveler, I booked a full-day tour of the Dead Sea and Masada. On my tour, I asked, “Where is the West Bank”?   I learned that it originally meant West of the Jordan River. Now, it is a shared space between Israelis and Palestinians. There are three settlement types here. Palestinian, Mixed, and total Israeli control has about 13 million people living there.   The land also has date trees, vineyards, and olive trees. With advances in agriculture, the soil has been cleansed from salt, so trees grow abundantly. There are many vegetables and greenhouses with drip irrigation, and I was told that cherry tomatoes were invented here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6UxvYeH_v0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bno1m1zhIWs   Masada is part of Rift Valley. Masada is the last Judean stronghold not taken by Romans. In 70 AD, the temple was destroyed and never rebuilt. Nine hundred thirty-two people went to Masada to escape the Roman Empire and lost. How did the Romans win? They built a ramp, had a catapult, and knocked down the wall. A gondola brings you to the top of the mountain now. You see storage rooms with places where date trees grew. There were plenty of touristy things to do here in Masada, but the history made it come alive today for me.   The lake is dried up, mostly, with remnants of where the water used to be. Jordan Valley is 450 meters below sea level. Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered here.   https://library.gordonconwell.edu/Old_Testament/Texts/DSS   Want to ride a camel? You may pay 20 shekels to ride and another 50 to get off. West of the Jordan River, 13 million people, primarily Arab, Jews, and mixed.   Businesses are harvesting minerals and creams from the Dead Sea. For example, we stopped at a factory where Ahava is sold; sunscreen is $50. Mud is also sold here for $13.60. The mud comes directly from the Dead Sea in a bag. They say it is suitable for your skin. I did not purchase any.   https://www.ahava.com/pages/about-us   People from around the world travel to the Dead Sea to bathe in its water and to cover themselves with its mud to relieve symptoms of skin conditions, including psoriasis and eczema, as well as rheumatoid arthritis, cardiac disease, respiratory illnesses, and more.    https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293979-i8272-k5751280 The Dead Sea has no fish. That's not a joke because it's poison. Spend 20 minutes maximum in the water—no splashing, drinking, or tasting. Don't get in your eyes. Don't wet your head. Dangerous. My genital area was burning, so I think I was more sensitive than others. I didn't stay in very long as my private parts were uncomfortable. While getting in and out of the water, I got two minor scratches on my hand. The mud felt oily and slick.    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Sea   https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/1040/   Rick Steves two minutes on Masada   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXQg-H4GsWA Today's Misstep- Screenshot your digital MAP before you travel   Today's Travel Advice- Wear a money belt.   Connect with Dr. Travelbest 5 Steps to Solo Travel website Dr. Mary Travelbest X Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Page Dr. Mary Travelbest Facebook Group Dr. Mary Travelbest Instagram Dr. Mary Travelbest Podcast Dr. Travelbest on TikTok Dr.Travelbest onYouTube In the news

In this episode, FAQ is: What are the best stretching methods for solo travel. Today's Destination is: Kerala, India Today's Misstep- I did not get to use my airline credits on Spirit. Travel Advice: U-shaped airline pillows can be stuffed with clothes. FAQ:  What are the best stretching methods for solo travel? Stretching offers several benefits for your solo female traveler's body, including improvements in flexibility, range of motion, and overall well-being. Here are some ways stretching can positively impact your body: Increased Flexibility: Stretching helps lengthen muscles and tendons, which can improve your flexibility. This increased flexibility can enhance your ability to perform various activities and exercises. Improved Range of Motion: Regular stretching can contribute to an increased range of motion in your joints. This is particularly beneficial for activities that require a wide range of motion, such as playing sports or performing certain exercises. Enhanced Circulation: Stretching promotes better blood circulation throughout the body. Improved circulation can help deliver nutrients to muscles and remove waste products, improving overall health. Reduced Muscle Tension and Soreness: Stretching can help alleviate muscle tension and reduce soreness after physical activity. It can also aid in preventing muscle imbalances, leading to discomfort or injury. Improved Posture: Stretching the muscles around the spine, shoulders, and hips can contribute to better posture. Proper posture is essential for preventing musculoskeletal issues and promoting overall spinal health. Enhanced Athletic Performance: Athletes often incorporate stretching into their warm-up routines to prepare their bodies for physical activity. Improved flexibility and range of motion can positively impact athletic performance and reduce the risk of injuries. Stress Relief: Gentle stretching exercises like yoga can promote relaxation and reduce stress. This is achieved through physical movement, controlled breathing, and mindfulness. Joint Health: Stretching helps maintain the health of your joints by promoting fluid circulation and preventing stiffness. This is especially important as you age, as flexibility and joint health become increasingly crucial. Improved Balance and Coordination: Stretching exercises that target specific muscle groups can enhance balance and coordination. This is beneficial for activities that require stability and precise movements. I would like to point out that stretching should be done gradually and in a controlled manner. Avoid bouncing or forcing your body into extreme positions, as this can lead to injuries. A well-rounded fitness routine that combines strength training, cardiovascular exercise, and flexibility training (including stretching) is generally recommended for overall health and fitness. Today's destination: Kerala, India Kerala, a state on India's tropical Malabar Coast, has nearly 600km of Arabian Sea shoreline. It's known for its palm-lined beaches and backwaters, a network of canals. Inland are the Western Ghats, mountains whose slopes support tea, coffee and spice plantations and wildlife. National parks and other sanctuaries are home to elephants, langur monkeys, and tigers. Named one of the world's ten paradises by National Geographic Traveler, Kerala is famous especially for its ecotourism initiatives and beautiful backwaters. Its unique culture and traditions, coupled with its varied demography, have made Kerala one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. I flew Indigo Air to Cochin, near Kerala. Phnom Penh, Cambodia     I've been on a 90-day trip to every time zone around the globe. My mission is world peace through cultural exchange. I was sustainable when I could by using local transportation, buses, and trains. I was solo, carrying a small backpack, called a “personal item,” that fit under the seat in front of me on a plane.   In this episode, the FAQ is: Should I bring earplugs on my trip? . Today's Destination is Phnom Penh, Cambodia Today's Mistake- I left my phone at the bus office. Travel Advice: Keep a pen handy   FAQ: Should I bring earplugs on my trip?   Yes. You can first step away from the noise, turn the volume down, or try these tips to save your hearing. Noise-canceling headphones may be preferred, but you can use earplugs if traveling light. Do they work well? They are better than nothing. Here are three steps to using foam earplugs: Roll, pull, and hold. Roll them to fit your ear, pull back your ear, and then insert them until they fit comfortably. The show notes have tips to help you out.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM3R_1JceWo     Today's destination: Phnom Penh, Cambodia   …..before you go, read up on the region's history and try to understand the heartbreaking things that happened in this country. The country went through some tough years in the last century. They are a comparatively less developed country, but the people have hope for the future. Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital, meets at the junction of the Mekong and Tonlé Sap rivers. Historically, it became a trading hub for the Khmer Empire and French colonialists. Listen to the Siem Reap podcast if you can later on.   I flew here from Ho Chi Minh City, but taking a bus and a lot cheaper would have been easy. Cambodia Angkor Airlines is reputed to have the best safety standards in the country, although I noticed that my plane was very seasoned. It was a much older model.   https://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-guides/cambodia-travel-tips/phnom-penh/   US citizens need to apply for a Cambodia visa. Cambodia e-visa cost: The Total fee is USD 36, and the E-visa processing time takes 2 - 5 business days. I had to change the date of birth on my visa application, as it was incorrect, which was easy to accomplish. Between when I first submitted it and it printed out, the date got switched, so I fixed it ahead of time. Rice (bai) is the most essential food in the country, and more than 2,000 species once grew in Cambodia. There's hardly a dish that does not contain rice, including noodles made from rice, desserts, cakes, and alcoholic beverages, and no Khmer meal is complete without boiled rice.   Although Cambodia's official currency is the Riel, the US Dollar is used in most transactions, so I recommend taking some US Dollars in cash (with some small denomination notes).   The city's walkable riverfront is lined with parks, restaurants, and bars, including the ornate Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, and the National Museum, displaying artifacts from around the country. At the city's heart is the Art Deco Central Market. I did a lot of mid-day walking along the river at Sisowath Quay, the most popular downtown promenade. There were few people there mid-day. It is scenic; you can see boats on the Tonle Sap River and look across a beautiful vista. Walk here between the Royal Palace and Wat Phnom.   My hotel in Phnom Penh was across the street from the Independence Monument and near the Cambodia Friendship Monument. They called it the Monument District. At night, the locals, by the hundreds, walked in a counterclockwise direction around the park to get some fresh air and exercise. It was a social experience, too. Families and singles all gathered here. I was part of the walk since I had been too hot to walk much during the day's heat.   The Independence Monument in Phnom Penh was built in 1958 to memorialize Cambodia's independence from France in 1953. It stands on a roundabout at the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard in the city's center.   https://www.planetware.com/cambodia/phnom-penh-cam-1-2.htm   In the Khmer Rouge's Security Prison S-21, it was here that some of the regime's worst torture atrocities were carried out. More than 17,000 people passed through these gates between 1975 and 1978, accused of betraying the revolution in some way. The Tuol Sleng Museum was where prisoners were housed, a former school. You can see photographs of what happened here. You can walk through the prison rooms, formerly classrooms. It's two stories, with offices and rooms with evidence of those killed. The detailed notes and photographs remain along with some of the remnants of furniture and statues of those who died. I took a tuk-tuk to visit this sad place at Street 113, Phnom Penh. I was unhappy but hopeful for a better future when I left here. Today's Mistake- I left my phone at the bus office.   While waiting for the bus, I entered the station and met the people working for the bus tour company. I had about an hour to wait, so I said hi and then sat down to relax from the sun. What I forgot at the desk was my phone. About ten minutes later, the driver arrived and said it was time to board the bus. In my rush, I left my phone on the desk. We started down the road, and then I remembered, so I told the tour guide I needed to get out. He said he would call and make sure they had it, and we would soon go back for it after we dropped someone at the hospital. I thought that was strange, but that's precisely what happened. That was my second time leaving my phone behind on this trip. I was learning a lesson again. Not to leave my phone anywhere. Don't be like me. I was lucky. You may not be so fortunate.   Today's Travel Advice-Keep a pen handy   In today's world of digital technology, one thing you will still need is a pen. There will be a time you need to write down something to remember. It could be a code, a phone number, or a key phrase. Keep something to write with nearby.     I want to bring meaning to your travels. Send a question or travel tip to info@drmarytravelbest.com. Sign up for the mailing list here. This is Dr Mary Travelbest: FAQ is: What about immunizations other than Covid? Where can I go for good medical advice? . Today's Destination is: Little Rock, Arkansas Today's Mistake- Taking too much luggage Travel Advice: Tips for Wildlife Watching: photos and using binoculars   FAQ:  Do I need other immunizations besides Covid, such as Typhoid fever immunization?   Answer: Are you traveling to countries that are known for having diseases? Find out. This makes a big difference when solo, especially in Steps 4 and 5 travel.   RSV, Covid, Flu? Triple whammy. Typhoid is bad in what countries? Hepatitis is bad. Malaria is where? Tetanus shots? Every ten years? Polio?   Ask your doctor. What immunizations do you need? Get your official International Certificate of Immunization that contains a record of your vaccinations and immunizations for you to keep with your passport. There are at least 10 recommended immunizations you may need. Go to a health seminar for travelers, and search for the best ones. You will likely be paying out of pocket for all of the services, including immunizations, so choose wisely. In most cases, health insurance does not cover these visits, generally speaking. Today's destination: Little Rock, Arkansas 200,000 people live here. It's a step one or two trip, in the 5 Steps to Solo Travel. Best time to visit is the summer, even though it's muggy hot. Long days and short nights make for some fun in the sun, shade, and breezes along the river. The hospitality is wonderful in Arkansas. Clinton Presidential Museum is one of the highlights of downtown. Indians influenced the river and are honored at Riverfront Park. Carve time to enjoy this park, free and easy to navigate. If you're coming from the east, it's an easy drive from Memphis, Tennessee.  Bright parts: Greenery is abundant here. Plenty of water is available for walks on the paths, along the shore, and exploring solo as a Step 1 or Step 2 traveler. https://www.littlerock.gov/ https://www.rivermarket.info/ Riverfront park has concerts, events, and plenty to entertain and amuse. Check the calendar when you are visiting. There's plenty to do here, just find what makes you tick. zoo, river, parks, museums, and history, including a lof of Arkansas history. Don't forget to sample some of the local home-style cooking and local favorite dishes. Do pack the bug repellent and watch for poison ivy. Today's Mistake-  Too much luggage Today's Travel Advice-Tips for Wildlife Discovery: photo tips and using binoculars First: Wildlife Watching Tips: Your car serves as a good “blind” for watching wildlife, protecting you and the animals from one another. Pull all the way off the road, turn off the motor and the lights. Keep young children and pets quiet and inside the car. Don't trespass on private property and, when in the national park or national forest, observe posted signs.  Next: Photo Tips: Use a telephoto lens and tripod. Respect the safety and welfare of your subject, aiming for photos of calm, dignified, unstressed animals. Morning and afternoon lights are best, with the sun at your back. If you don't have a telephoto lens, show the animal in its natural surroundings rather than trying to move in too close. You could lose the shot altogether by spooking the subject.  Last: Binocular Tips: First find the subject with the unaided eye and, bringing the eyepieces just under your eyes, sight the subject over the tips of the eyepieces. Slowly bring the binoculars to your eyes and focus. I like binocs that are small and compact. Welcome to Cairns, Australia and Dr. Mary Travelbest   In this episode: FAQ is: Dr. Travelbest, What are the seven natural wonders of the world? Today's Destination is: Cairns, Australia  Today's Mistake- Leaving my wallet in a taxi Travel Advice:  Avoid single supplements when you travel. FAQ: What are the seven natural wonders of the world? Answer: One will be talked about on this podcast, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, which is located by Cairns. The other six are:   Aurora Borealis (also known as the northern lights) Harbor of Rio de Janeiro. Grand Canyon, USA Mount Everest. Victoria Falls. Parícutin, Mexico volcano   Today's destination: Cairns, Australia It's a city in Queensland, on the tropic north east coast.  The population is about 150,000 plus lots of tourism is happening here. Some of the world's most beautiful diving spots are here, on the Great Barrier Reef.   It's known for agriculture, the port, and now a destination for worldwide travel. The best time to visit is spring or fall, as the tropical rainforest and climate is lovely nearly anytime.    The people here are genuine and really easy to relate to. They are kind and personal and warm. You can meet them where they are and get to know them with a few nice greetings and respect for their surroundings. When I visited, I met several of the locals and they were all helpful and accommodating.    I flew to Cairns from Brisbane, and stayed for about a week before flying to Alice Springs. The Great Barrier Reef was my destination and I enjoyed the boat trips Snorkeling with the turtles and seeing the many Islands.nI'd like  to name all of the nearby islands, but there too many to name. Some islands are not for humans because they are protected. Here are three main ones, where you can spend the night if you want.    https://greatbarrierreef.org/islands/best-islands-to-visit-near-cairns/ Fitzroy Island Green Island Lizard Island Besides the ocean, on land, you'll want to visit the Kuranda Scenic Railway. It's built into the mountain it seems in some areas. It's a train right through a dense rainforest, with steep ravines and picturesque waterfalls within the World Heritage listed Barron Gorge National Park. This 2 hour journey gives a view of Barron Falls, 15 hand carved tunnels, 37 bridges and waterfalls you will love. https://www.kuranda.org/listing/kuranda-scenic-railway Today's Mistake-  Leaving my wallet in a taxi Today's Travel Advice- Avoid solo travel's single supplement fees when you travel
