What's up Bros? It is the Southern Charm premiere and we are so glad that this show is back. In part 1 of our recap, we get to catch up with everyone. It's the Carolina Cup so everyone is headed to watch the race. Austen and Craig pack up and head out early to go to Shep's family farm for the night. It's been awkward since the reunion and BravoCon when the three of them had a falling out. Austen and Craig felt like it was necessary to create some firm boundaries while Shep still feels abandoned in his time of need. JT and Venita have apparently gotten closer in the off season. It looks like after JT was shot down by Taylor, he and Venita connected on the beach. We'd heard rumors of a potential relationship starting between these two and it appears like this may be setting up the ground work for that... JT had an ATV accident while in Costa Rica and now is getting around with a cane, and continues to speak on Austen and his behavior. We do not know why he cares so much but we do have theories. Shep claims to have undergone a spiritual awakening while also in Costa Rica, and credits ayahuasca for his transformation. Time will tell. We're introduced to newcomer, Molly, who seems like she'll make a good addition to the group and while she has some virtual history with Craig, its Whitney who she has her eyes set on. What's up Bros? In the conclusion of our Southern Charm recap, Shep, Austen and Craig come to some sort of agreement on how things were handled. Craig feels justified in the hard cut off, Austen is on the fence and Shep at the very least wishes that they could have informed him that they needed some space before they decided to distance themselves. The rest of the group gets. on a bsu to head to the Carolina Cup. While on the way, JT makes a HILARIOUS purchase of... More canes! Why? So he can make some AWESOME cane puns and give the other guys in the groups canes because its such a funny way to cclear the air! He's so funny! Not at all a try hard that we can't stand. While on the way, some discussion of Austen's new girlfriend and some potential hiccups in the timeline come up. JT makes more stupid exorcism jokes and still seems to care way too much about Austen and his behavior. Upon arrival, JT attempts to 'make amends' with the other guys in the group and its pretty obvious that he is clueless and that the other guys are still not interested in a friendship. Shep tries to talk to Taylor, and while she isn't our favorite, it was nice to see her not give him the time of day after blocking his number. Whitney shows up with a 20 something year old date, much to Molly's dismay. And JT does the unthinkable when he insults Ms. Patricia, the Queen of Charleston, by giving her a cane of all things... Whether he was trying to be rude or not, the implication alone is INSANE. But Patricia does the lady like thing and ignores lil JT and walks away. Because she is class and JT is ass. The Season 10 premiere of Southern Charm is here! Will these boys ever grow up? Craig drives Austen with the trunk open to meet up at Shep's family ranch so they all can mend their relationship. Austen and Shep come together after his ayahuasca trip and Craig just giggles. Venita has somehow attached herself to Willy Wonka who comes to the Carolina Cup with canes for all (Seriously is everybody o-cane?). We meet Molly, who seems to mesh well with this group and maybe Whitney? We know it's going to be rough season for JT when it seems like most of the cast (including Miss Pat!) can't stand him. In this podcast episode I had a chance to connect with Rod and Barry of ThePaddleChannel. Rod and Barry have progressed from SUP to OC to SURFSKI and their YouTube channel documents, in full transparency, the trials and tribulations of their journey along the way. They are both super passionate about paddling and more so about downwind. Their videos bring a great perspective that should resonate with both new paddlers and those transitioning across paddling disciplines. Many of you may have heard of the Carolina Cup, which is one of the biggest paddle events in the US (possibly just behind the Gorge and Chattajack). This race is put on by the Wrightsville Paddle Club which is about a 45 minute drive North of where Rod and Barry paddle at Carolina Beach. Rod and Barry have an 8 mile downwind that they typically run starting at Fort Fisher and finishing at Carolina Beach or in the Carolina Beach Inlet. This run takes advantage of the the prevailing south/southwest winds that run throughout the summer. There aren't any points, bays, shoals, or other factors to greatly influence the wave conditions along the route, so conditions remain pretty consistent. The biggest challenges are in launching and landing. The launch is directly off the beach, so there is often a surf break to navigate. They have the option of either finishing on the beach or in the inlet, both have their pros and cons which we discuss in detail during the podcast. Carolina Beach is a busy beach town in the summer, but in the spring and fall things quiet down, but the water is still warm and the wind still blows, making this an excellent time to take a paddling vacation. There aren't many other paddlers or paddle businesses in the area, so your best bet is to take your boat, but you can always get in touch with Barry or Rod and they will be more than happy to help you with finding a boat if possible. The detailed Google Maps discussion starts at around minute 24:00 on the video and in the podcast. I hope you enjoy this podcast as much as I enjoyed putting it together. Carolina Beach is now on my short list of downwind destinations. I really like the idea of an April or May trip when Lake Michigan is struggling to get above 40 degrees :-) https://youtu.be/PLTKGs7Y7Es

April Zilg has an amazing story, morphing from a couch potato to serious contender. Coming second in the Stand Up Paddle world in 2019 cements that thinking. We have huge admiration for anyone who rips their life around in such a wonderfully positive way. Chris asked on the Facebook group about competitive equity at matches: Ports - all ports being the same high or low height. Should they be mixed height? I'm taller than most shooters. Not the tallest guy on the range, but above average. Personally I don't have a problem with MD's mixing up the height of ports, as long as they aren't going too crazy with it. Tall shooters can get low, but short shooters can't get higher. I think there's a size and height of port that can work for every shooter, and then it's totally kosher to add in something like a low port here and there. I like low ports, mostly because I like to hear people grumble about them, and also because I like to see people really get tested on their prone handgun shooting skills, which is something that nobody practices, and a lot of people struggle with. Walking stages - should stages be open the day before for people that can travel? I had to ponder this one for a little bit, and while it's not completely fair that someone could walk the match the day before, and someone else couldn't, as long as the the range is open for everyone to have the opportunity to walk the match, I'm pretty much okay with it. Because if we close the stages off completely to everyone until match day, do the match staff that helped setup the match not have an advantage over everyone else? My thing is this: If the range is open to everyone to walk stages the day before, and you just can't get an early flight in to the match, that's not the concern of the match, that's your problem. What about Match Directors who setup stages that will be used at a future major match, at a local match ahead of time? Setting up exact stages seems shady. I haven't seen that before, at least that I can think of. However when the Carolina Cup was still the big IDPA match in my area every June, if you were to shoot at that range in the few months leading up to the match, you could definitely tell that the match director was working on different things to get ready for the match. Things like tweaking the speed of moving targets, engagement orders, different props, etc, but I don't think he really ever setup entire stages for everyone to shoot ahead of the match. Personally, the big competitive equity thing that I see is pepper poppers screwing people over. If I were king of the shooting sports, the first thing I would change would be to treat poppers the same as falling steel. If it's hit and doesn't fall, that should be a stage equipment malfunction, and the the shooter should get a re-shoot. Plug of the Week: Watch this episode of This Week Tonight, and tell me what you think about the messaging that they're countering. Is this the sort of messaging the pro-gun people should be putting out there?
