Shoot us a Text.Episode #1291: An activist investor pushes CarMax to overhaul its digital game, Carvana accelerates same-day delivery into Los Angeles, and Lucid rolls out CarPlay and Android Auto updates while resetting its software strategy. Activist investor Starboard Value is turning up the heat on CarMax's incoming CEO, arguing the used-car giant has plenty of untapped potential, and they've got a $350 million stake to back up that opinion.Starboard sent a letter to CEO-elect Keith Barr calling out CarMax for falling short, and pushing for a streamlined online trade-in process and better digital conversion rates. The firm wants SG&A expenses capped at 70–75% of gross profit, and believes modest price cuts of $100–$300 per vehicle could restore competitiveness.Starboard is also nominating two board members, including its own CEO Jeffrey Smith, signaling this is more than a suggestion.Analysts at Truist agree there's room to improve, but warn that gaining ground on Carvana while cutting costs at the same time won't be easy."If CarMax can get its flywheel moving again as Starboard talked about, then I think the stock would be drastically higher than it is today," said Morningstar analyst David Whiston.Carvana is taking its same-day delivery service to the City of Angels, and if you thought they were already moving fast, Los Angeles is about to find out what that really means.Carvana has rolled out same-day vehicle delivery to the Los Angeles metro area, letting eligible customers go from online checkout to driveway delivery in a matter of hours.Customers looking to sell can also get same-day pickup or drop-off after completing an online appraisal — making the whole transaction, buy or sell, a same-day affair.LA joins Sacramento and San Diego, making California one of the more saturated same-day markets, with Carvana now operating the service across 20 states nationwide.Lucid Motors is delivering some good news to Gravity SUV owners just in time for its investor day. After a rough few months of software headaches, it's a welcome update.Lucid is pushing a software update to North American Gravity SUV owners Thursday that enables Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with European and Middle East owners getting it in late March. The features have been available on the Lucid Air sedan for some time, but the Gravity has had a rocky software rollout, significant enough that Lucid's interim CEO issued a public apology to owners.Lucid recently parted ways with several top software leaders and last month laid off 12% of its workforce.Today's show is brought to you by iPacket Value. False Bay missing great whites: Chris Fallows blames nets, longlines & Aussie “flake and chips,” not orcas

The great white sharks of False Bay – once so abundant that film crews from around the world came to document them, have all but vanished. Wildlife photographer and conservationist Chris Fallows says we're looking for blame in the wrong place. In this interview with BizNews Fallows, famous for capturing the world's first images of breaching great whites at Seal Island – explains why the two orcas, Port and Starboard, who are widely blamed for the sharks' disappearance, “arrived after the crime scene”. Instead, he points to government sanctioned policies, shark nets demersal shark longline fisheries; and Australia's appetite for “flake and chips” as the real culprits. These sharks, immortalised in world famous series such as Blue Planet, once attracted more than 100,000 visitors to South African shores every year. Fallows argues they have now been lost through bad management and political infighting. And for those who insist shark nets remain essential in places like KwaZuluNatal, Fallows says modern technology and a different way of thinking offer a far more progressive solution. He also believes there are clear lessons to be learnt from the protection of humpback whales. While humpback numbers have surged under protection. including a world record sighting of 300 whales in a single day, great white sharks, an ecologically vital apex predator, are disappearing from our oceans.

Welcome back to Day Drinking on Delmarva. In this episode, Todd returns from a month-long hiatus in Florida while Tony shares major career updates and a deep dive into the business of death care.Episode SummaryThe “Snowbird” LifeTodd shares his experience spending a month in the Florida Keys, specifically Key Largo and Islamorada. After surviving a brutal cold snap on Delmarva, Todd spent two weeks relaxing by a canal-side pool. He notes the unique perspective of getting a “summer” experience in February, something local beach business owners rarely enjoy during their own peak season.Career Pivots and SubstackTony reveals he has quit his job to become his own publisher. He has moved his focus to Substack, launching a podcast series on the Ocean City Film Festival and a new niche industry project called On Deathcare. Tony discusses the early success of these newsletters, noting high open rates and the unique community growing within the death care space. The Business of DeathThe duo explores the “final act” of life through a capitalist lens. Tony shares insights from a recent survey by a death care lawyer:* Cremation Trends: While most people choose cremation, it is often their “second choice,” primarily driven by cost.* Alternative Methods: They discuss “aquamation” (alkaline hydrolysis), which is often restricted by protectionist laws in the funeral industry.* Gen Z Preferences: Interestingly, younger generations express interest in traditional state-style funerals and open caskets but are often resistant to embalming—a combination that presents significant logistical “unpleasantness.”The Digital “Condemned Building”They share a mutual exhaustion with Facebook, which Tony compares to trying to find a place for new graffiti in a filthy, condemned building. Both hosts emphasize moving their energy toward platforms like Substack and Beehiiv for more authentic connection and better business sustainability.Upcoming Delmarva Events* Ocean City Film Festival: Celebrating its 10th anniversary.* Oceans Calling: Tickets are on sale for the massive beach concert featuring a newly released artist lineup.* St. Patrick's Day: The Ocean City parade and Dewey Beach opening weekends (including the Starboard) are just around the corner.* Freeman Arts Pavilion: New stage construction is underway with a long-format video project in the works. S&P Futures are edging modestly lower this morning as investors sift through a flood of corporate earnings results. President Trump's newly announced bailout plan for Argentina includes an additional $20 billion in financing — though U.S. banks involved are reportedly seeking significant collateral given Argentina's ongoing instability. Treasury Secretary Bessent met with top private equity leaders to discuss funding for a $150 billion infrastructure initiative. On the corporate front, Starboard has taken a nearly 5% stake in Fluor (FLR), sending shares higher. Earnings momentum continues with GE, GM, MMM, KO, DHR, and DGX all trading to the upside following their releases this morning. After the bell, results are due from NFLX, TXN, COF, and CB — setting the stage for another busy night of earnings.

How Starboard uses door-to-door prospecting with donuts to win freight forwarder clients | Sumeet Trehan ($5.5M Raised)

Starboard is building AI-first infrastructure to transform global trade by improving the productivity of freight forwarders—the central coordinators who connect 15-20 different parties in every international trade transaction. With 15 years of experience in the industry, including roles at Maersk, BCG, and Flexport, Sumeet Trehan saw an opportunity to modernize an industry that has invested heavily in physical infrastructure but neglected technological innovation. The company has raised $5.5 million and is approaching $1 million ARR while creating an entirely new category they call "AI-first forwarders." Topics Discussed: Building AI infrastructure to automate freight forwarding coordination and quoting processes Creating a new category in the traditional, relationship-driven logistics industry Go-to-market strategies for selling to an "old boys club" industry that operates differently from typical SaaS markets The founder's decision to personally handle the first 20-30 sales before hiring any sales staff Vision for transforming global trade by creating a comprehensive platform for small-to-mid-sized importers   GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Cold calling still works in traditional industries: Starboard generates significant top-of-funnel activity through direct cold calling, with freight forwarders actually appreciating the personal touch. Sumeet's team achieves a 10% pickup rate and converts 15-20% of answered calls to discovery meetings by being upfront about the cold call nature and immediately focusing on business outcomes. The approach works because their target market—freight forwarders—are accustomed to making and receiving cold calls as part of their daily business operations. Door-to-door prospecting remains viable for relationship-driven markets: In industries where personal relationships dominate, physical presence can be a differentiator. Starboard literally brings donuts to prospects' offices, which works because their target market values face-to-face interactions. This approach only makes sense when your industry culture supports it and when the lifetime value of customers justifies the time investment. Founders should personally execute early sales to understand the playbook: Rather than immediately hiring sales staff after raising funding, Sumeet chose to personally close the first 20-30 deals. This allowed him to deeply understand customer pain points, refine the sales process, and develop a replicable methodology before bringing on sales team members. Only after proving out the top-of-funnel motion did he hire his first SDR, and only after closing 15-20 deals did he hire a sales leader. Physical implementation presence drives early-stage product adoption: For complex B2B products still achieving product-market fit, being physically present during implementation creates stronger relationships and better feedback loops. Starboard's team travels to be on-site when clients first use the product, which helps with both adoption rates and product development insights. They maintain ongoing communication through WhatsApp and Teams channels rather than Slack, adapting to their customers' preferred communication methods. Category creation requires education over product promotion: Starboard's marketing strategy focuses entirely on educating the market about AI's potential impact on logistics rather than promoting their specific product. By speaking at events, writing blogs, and participating in podcasts about industry transformation rather than Starboard features, they position themselves as thought leaders. This approach builds trust and creates demand for the category before potential customers are ready to evaluate specific solutions. Sequencing product development based on customer feedback: The company's current quoting product serves as a wedge, with plans to expand into marketplace functionality and then full operations automation. Each expansion builds on customer relationships and data from the previous phase. This measured approach to product development ensures each step creates value while building toward the larger vision of comprehensive trade infrastructure.   //   Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe.  www.GlobalTalent.co   //   Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams.
