An Indiana electrician encounters a UFO and goes insane, a baby is abducted by aliens, and scienists have a battle of the bands against a spaceship. Steven Spielberg's follow-up to the massive success of Jaws turns out to be a blueprint for the rest of his filmography: the dissolution of the nuclear family through parental abandonment; strong religous themes and yearning; aliens and horror; the difficulty of communication. Even specific scenes we find in later films first show up here. It's a skeleton key to his body of work, a fascinating bookened to 2022's The Fabelmans, and arguably his best film. Starring Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, Bob Balaban, Cary Guffey, and the great François Truffaut. Written and directed by Steven Spielberg.

On Episode 122 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis concludes the celebration of the 45th Anniversary of Steven Spielberg's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, in the second of two episodes. This 1977 film stars Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, Bob Balaban, Cary Guffey, and François Truffaut. It tells the story of Roy Neary, an everyday blue-collar worker in Indiana, whose life changes after an encounter with a UFO. CE3K became Columbia Pictures' most successful film at that time. Assisting in this endeavor are two very special guests! First of all, DANYI DEATS (the daughter of the late DICKY DEATS, the Key Grip on CE3K) shares the experiences of her and her family on the set of the film's finale at the Devil's Tower base! Danyi, who was 9 years old at the time, was one of the child actors chosen to participate in a group of small extraterrestrials who descend from the Mothership. In fact, Danyi was the "alien" who held Richard Dreyfuss' hand as a whole group of them escorted him to the platform to enter the ship! Danyi later appeared in Madonna's music video for "Borderline", and also went on to produce several music videos herself in Hollywood; including "Nothing But Love" by Mr. Big, "Desert Rose" by Sting, "I'm Gonna Getcha Good" by Shania Twain, "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran, and "When the Heartache is Over" by Tina Turner (to name just a small few). Connect with Danyi on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube! Additionally, DENNIS TROMBLY joins Curtis for a conversation about his new YouTube Fanfilm Miniseries, Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Amended. After high school, Dennis began studies at Oakland Community College in Robotics Engineering, fitting for the automotive driven industry. During a humanities class, Film Studies, a professor pointed out his keen eye for observation, detail, and storytelling for film and suggested considering a career in film and television. In this discussion, he shares his love for films, specifically CE3K, and what led to his producing a prequel series for the film. Dennis may be reached at cetktv.com, as well as on Facebook or Twitter. Additionally, Mr. Retrovere shares this episode's Retro News segment. Lee, Leah, and returning guest host Vaughn, cover a little-talked about Bud Spencer film he did with the kid from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", Cary Guffey. The film in question is "The Sheriff and the Satellite Kid" (1979), directed by Michele Lupo. The conversation mostly revolves around how Spencer fares separated from his usual co-star Terrence Hill, and if putting him into a family film works with his brand of gags and action; if Cary Guffey is any good; that shadowy government organization known as the Coast Guard; executing a young child; the amazing grocery store fight; and the catchy theme from Oliver Onions, just to name a few things. Also, the host correct a mistake from the last episode and talk about what they've watched as of late. Hey, if you're stuck on Earth for a bit, why not give us a listen? "The Sheriff and the Satellite Kid" IMDB Vaughn's excellent podcast. Featured Music: "Whistle and Bells" & "Sheriff" by Oliver Onions.

For the 9th of our TMR Movie Roundtables we welcome back our good friends Mark Campbell and Frank Johnson for a three-way discussion on Steven Spielberg's 1977 sci-fi classic, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Inspired by the unlikely combination of "When you wish upon a star" from Disney's Pinocchio and the Watergate Scandal, Spielberg's masterpiece tells a double-threaded story of "close encounters" with alien phenomena—in fly-on-the-wall style—that culminates in one of the most amazing cinematic experiences of all time. In one thread, intergovernmental researchers find decades-old aircraft (still new) and a ship in the middle of a desert, and discover that people around the globe are hearing the same five-note melody from the sky. In the other thread, electrical linesman Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss)—among other "chosen" individuals—witnesses strange lights overhead and becomes obsessed with the shape of a particular geological formation. Eventually the two threads combine in a "close encounter of the third kind" in which human contact with extraterrestrial beings is established. Join us as we reminisce about our experiences with the film, discuss the production and reflect theologically upon its themes.
Richard Dreyfuss stars as Muncie, Indiana electricity lineman, Roy Neary, one of many people in the world to experience a close encounter with a UFO. Others experiencing the phenomenon exhibit the same odd behavior — radiation burns and an obsession with a mountainous shape. Roy’s obsession strains his relationship with his family, who think he is mentally ill. The eyewitnesses are compelled to converge at a location where the US military also plans for a close encounter of the third kind. Francois Truffaut, Teri Garr, Cary Guffey, and Melinda Dillon also appear in this influential film written and directed by Steven Spielberg.
