Surf's up! The Blockbuster Babes bring you a bevy of bodacious reviews from the latest Breakfast with Pam. First up, Simon Miraudo and Tristan Fidler review radical new Aussie psychodrama The Surfer, starring ‘Our Nic', Nicolas Cage! In this Yallingup-shot film, Cage plays a businessman who returns to his WA hometown with the intention of reclaiming the childhood home that overlooks his favourite beach, only to face off against the toxic dudes who dominate the surf and warn him, ‘locals only'. Then, Tristan shares his thoughts on the remake of The Wedding Banquet, starring Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone and Kelly Marie Tran, all about the farcical comedy of errors that follows two gay couples who intersect for a green card marriage, which gets complicated by their cultural backgrounds (and some meddling mothers and grandmothers). The Surfer opens in Australian cinemas 15 May (with advance screenings this weekend). The Wedding Banquet is now showing. Keep listening for Tristan's pod-exclusive review of Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively's Another Simple Favour, which has gone straight to Amazon Prime Video… perhaps for good reason. For a bonus episode this week, Emilio goes solo for a (mostly) spoiler free talk about a film he really loves, Ang Lee's "The Wedding Banquet".  It was a successful and critically acclaimed independent film back when it was released in 1993, but has mostly stayed relevant as its esteemed director's international breakthrough.  Yet it's a timeless film full of humor, compassion,  and reflections on what we sacrifice of ourselves due to societal forces and the expectations of our families.  Its enduring place in cinema history is evidenced by it being reimagined by writer/director Andrew Ahn - this remake can currently be seen in theaters nationwide.   Emilio gets into what he enjoys so much about the original, shares his thoughts on the remake and how it is distinct from the original, and speaks with Professor Zhen Zhang, an NYU film professor who shared this film with him in an undergraduate seminar, about Ang Lee's original film.  Professor Zhen Zhang is a film professor at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and the Director of the Tisch's Asian Film and Media Initiative.  She has a decades long, decorated career in academia that also includes guest-curating film programs for the Film Society at Lincoln Center of Performing Arts, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Women Make Waves Film Festival in Taipei. If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.  This really helps us find new listeners and grow!Follow us on IG and TikTok: @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd? It's a massive catch-up episode of the Breakfast All Day podcast. New stuff! Sorta new stuff! And a lengthy movie news segment to cover all the topics we missed during spring break. We begin with a review of the epic "Sinners," one of the year's most anticipated films, which lives up to the hype and more. Ryan Coogler re-teams with his frequent muse, Michael B. Jordan, who plays dual roles as identical twins in 1930s Mississippi. We loved it. In theaters (and see it in IMAX if you can.) Next up is "A Minecraft Movie," which has been out for a couple of weeks but we missed it over vacation. We were surprised how much we enjoyed it (and behaved ourselves during the chicken jockey of it all). In theaters. Next: We review Andrew Ahn's remake of the 1993 Ang Lee arthouse classic "A Wedding Banquet." Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone and Kelly Marie Tran are among the cast in this romantic comedy about queer couples juggling love and cultural traditions. In theaters. And then, we wanted to include the audio from our "Secret Mall Apartment" review from a couple weeks back. This thoroughly entertaining documentary follows a group of artists who found a hidden spot in the middle of the Providence Place Mall and called it home for several years in the early 2000s. First, Megan reviews THE UGLY STEPSISTER (1:54), Emilie Blichfeldt's Norwegian fairy-tale horror film starring Lea Myren and Thea Sofie Loch Næss, which played at this year's Boston Underground Film Festival. With lush costumes and production design, it's a compelling and gruesome Cinderella retelling that critiques beauty standards.   Then, Megan talks about THE WEDDING BANQUET (19:25), Andrew Ahn's queer rom-com (a remake of Ang Lee's 1993 film) starring Kelly Marie Tran, Lily Gladstone, Bowen Yang, and Han Gi-chan, about a gay man who offers to marry his lesbian friend to pay for her partner's IVF treatments and so he can get a green card. It's a sweet and tender film with an excellent cast.   Lastly, Megan discusses SINNERS (33:41), Ryan Coogler's vampire horror film, starring Michael B. Jordan, Miles Caton, Hailee Steinfeld, and Wunmi Mosaku. Set in the 1930s, it follows two twin brothers opening a juke joint and the evil that follows them. With gorgeous cinematography and a hypnotic score, it's a visceral, moody, and captivating film.   And on this week's Patreon bonus episode, Megan talks about two newly streaming 2024 genre movies, one set in the 1980s and one in the 1990s: Kyle Mooney's sci-fi horror comedy Y2K and Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy's horror film DEAD MAIL!

The random year generator spun 1974, so the boys head to 1937 L.A. to discuss the Roman Polanski, Robert Towne, Bob Evans, Jack Nicholson, and Faye Dunaway classic “Chinatown”. Often cited as one of the best movies with one of the best scripts in Hollywood history, plenty has been said about this film. Still, cinematographer Dave had never seen it, John went to fancy film school, and Jeff goes deep into the context of the film year, highlighting top-grossing films, awards, and what the heck was going on in the world. What would it take to start seeing Indigenous fashion brands held to the same regard as Gucci, Ralph Lauren, and Prada? Lesley Hampton is at the forefront of that question. Leslie Hampton's work as a fashion designer has been making waves across the fashion industry. She's dressed A-listers like Lily Gladstone, and been named Forbes 30 Under 30 and Vogue's No. 1 Canadian designer. In this episode, Leslie unpacks what it means to be a trailblazer in Indigenous Fashion, the inspiration behind her pieces and her style sessions – especially as a body neutrality advocate, and what she means when she says that her designs are for everyone. More about Lesley Hampton: Lesley Hampton is an Anishinaabe artist and fashion designer focused on mental wellness and body neutrality in fashion through the lens of the Indigenous worldview. Lesley is a member of Temagami First Nation, and she identifies as an adult 'Third Culture Kid' with her formative years spent in Canada's Arctic and Atlantic, Australia, England, Indonesia, and New Caledonia. This amalgamation of her Anishinaabe Indigeneity and her international upbringing nurtured a passion for socio-cultural causes as she uses her work as a catalyst for research, conversation, and community building. https://lesleyhampton.com/ Thanks for checking out this episode of the Matriarch Movement podcast! The panel first explores The Bear, now in its third season, and questions whether Christopher Storer's beast has become too self-aware. Then, they discuss Fancy Dance, a profoundly moving film by Native writer-director Erica Tremblay starring Lily Gladstone that's equal parts road movie, crime procedural, and family drama. Finally, the trio dives deep into their personal relationships with app culture, inspired by Mark Hill's essay for Slate, “I'm Tired of Using An App For Everything.” In the exclusive Slate Plus segment, the panel answers a listener question from James: “As you get older, how do you keep yourself open to new interests, experiences, and ideas? Crime Writers On...True Crime Review

Writer Rebecca Godfrey returns to her parents' home in Vancouver to develop a book about local teens in a foster home. One of the troubled girls she focuses on is soon connected to the disappearance of her frenemy, Reena Virk, last seen fleeing a group of teens who chased her from a party. When Reena's body is discovered, Rebecca inserts herself in the teens' world to find the real story for her book. Meanwhile, Rebecca's childhood friend, Officer Cam Bentland, seeks her own answers as to what happened that night under the bridge.  Hulu's “Under the Bridge” stars Riley Keough and Golden Globe winner Lily Gladstone in this adaptation of Godfrey's nonfiction book. The series combines the real life story of Reena Virk and the teens responsible for her death with a dramatized story of women confronting their pasts.  OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "UNDER THE BRIDGE" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 12 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE.
