Reaching new depths of terror.Jaws 3-D (titled Jaws III in its 2-D form) is a 1983 American horror film directed by Joe Alves and starring Dennis Quaid, Bess Armstrong, Simon MacCorkindale and Louis Gossett Jr. It is the second sequel to Steven Spielberg's Jaws and the third installment in the Jaws franchise. The film follows the Brody children from the previous films to SeaWorld, a Florida marine park with underwater tunnels and lagoons. As the park prepares for opening, a young great white shark infiltrates the park from the sea, seemingly attacking and killing the park's employees. Once the shark is captured, it becomes apparent that a second, much larger shark also entered the park and was the real culprit.00:00 Intro25:55 Horror News 38:08 What We've Been Watching47:03 Film Review1:25:36 Film Rating1:34:29 OutroPodcast - https://fanlink.tv/horrorhangoutPatreon - https://www.patreon.com/horrorhangoutFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/horrorhangoutpodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/horror_hangout_TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@horrorhangoutpodcastInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/horrorhangoutpodcast/Website - http://www.hawkandcleaver.comBen - https://twitter.com/ben_erringtonAndy - https://twitter.com/AndyCTWritesOliver - https://x.com/ollieh82/https://olivers-retrospectives.com/Audio credit - Taj Eastonhttp://tajeaston.comSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/thehorrorhangout. Can you really take Joe Alves's Jaws 3D seriously? Join us on Screams and Streams as we question the necessity of this 1983 follow-up to Spielberg's classic. We kick things off with a plot summary from Mike, setting the stage for our discussion about the Brody brothers' mission to rescue SeaWorld from a gigantic shark. Sam expresses her surprise at the film's abysmally low score on Rotten Tomatoes—11%!—and admits she found it unexpectedly enjoyable. Meanwhile, Mike's childhood nostalgia takes a hit upon rewatching, and Chad pulls no punches in expressing his loathing for this poorly executed sequel. We then dive into the cringe-worthy moments that make Jaws 3D both laughable and frustrating. From awkward character portrayals to the poorly executed 3D effects, we leave no stone unturned. Chad leads the charge in highlighting bizarre character choices, like the British underwater photographer's needless boasting and the cowboy boots-wearing oddball. Our critique extends to the film's reliance on outdated 3D technology, particularly in those infamously bad underwater scenes and the shark explosion finale. We also discuss the problematic depiction of captive animals and the tired trope of sharks as menacing villains. In our concluding chapters, we analyze the relationships and interactions within the film, pointing out the various missed opportunities and inconsistencies. Despite some effective moments, like a suspenseful underwater sequence and a realistically depicted shark attack wound, the film falls flat in many areas. We wrap things up by sharing our individual ratings, and discuss the movie's overall watchability. Despite its many flaws, we find humor in its absurdity, making it an entertaining film to mock. Follow us on social media and visit our website for more insights and future recommendations! Head to www.screamsandstreams.com for more information related to our episode.

If you listened to episode 61 you'll know it was part one of a two part conversation with Lucasfilm and ILM producer Jim Bloom. Jim is a great talker and worked on so many projects, most of them successful but he also talks openly and enthusiastically about some movies that didn't make it into production and about some that did but didn't do much at the box office. In this conversation we talk about his cameos as Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back, about the challenges running an effects house and the ups and downs of life as a producer, his views on Return of the Jedi director, the late Richard Marquand and his time working alongside Richard in Yuma and in the Redwood forests of California. We also talk about a little known film that Jim produced called Warning Sign, released in 1983, which he says had some hints towards how a future pandemic may play out. I'm going to track down a DVD or blu ray of that.I hope you enjoy it.Check out the following link if you're interested in supporting the Joe Alves documentary project on Kickstarter - https://www.backerkit.com/call_to_action/1d3f98a4-6576-46f0-9585-6c9fc45ab7e5/landing

Sci-Fi Month continues with a look at Steven Spielberg's 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind. It's really three stories in one. In the first it's former cartographer David Laughlin (Bob Balaban) who's been recruited to help French scientist Claude Lacombe (Francois Truffaut) investigate a strange series of alien visitations. The second concerns Julian Guiler (Melinda Dillon) whose little boy, Barry, is kidnapped by aliens. And, the third follows Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss), a man who's disillusioned with his life until he witnesses a group of alien ships which plant an image in his head as kind of an invitation to join them.Suzen Tekla Kruglnska and El Goro join Mike to discuss this landmark film. Interview: We're celebrating the 46th anniversary of JAWS with Production Designer/Art Director/Director Joe Alves. Joe joins me for a mind-blowing deep dive into the making of JAWS and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Joe is a recipient of the Art Directors Lifetime Achievement Award. When you think of the visual elements that stand out in JAWS and Close Encounters we have Joe to thank for all of that. Joe shares with me an oral history of his early involvement in two of the greatest movies ever made. Joe designed the shark in Jaws and scouted Devils Tower for Close Encounters but that's only a fraction of the story. Joe shares his time working with the masters: Alfred Hitchcock, Walt Disney, Rod Serling, and Steven Spielberg. You'll never look at movies the same again after hearing Joe's amazing first-hand behind-the-scenes stories. For this episode, episode 19, I’ve returned to Jaws. If you don’t already know my work… from 2006 to 2014 I created some feature length documentaries, or filmumentaries as I called them on some of my favourite films. Inside Jaws is still available for FREE on vimeo. So, last weekend here in February 2021, I spoke to legendary production designer Joe Alves. He collaborated with Steven Spielberg on a number of projects going back to Steven’s years in television. I spoke to him about his origins in the industry as well as his time on Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Joe has a book called “Joe Alves, Production Designer” it’s written by Dennis L Prince with a foreword by effects artist Greg Nicotero. You can buy it here at Joe's site - https://joealvesmovieart.com/Inside Jaws - A Filmumentary - https://vimeo.com/68400837Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/jamiebenning)
Joe Alves has worked as a production designer on some of the most legendary films produced in the late 20th century, including Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Escape From New York. He also directed the third installment of the Jaws series, Jaws 3D. In our chat, Joe and I discuss the differences between creating entire world on-set for major productions, and just creating enough to make the shot. See Show Notes at www.AaronBossig.com
The boys at Bombs Away go 3D as they take on another chapter in the Jaws saga this time at Seaworld! The most infamous shark of all times is back... bigger and more terrifying than ever in this all-new JAWS adventure starring Dennis Quaid, Bess Armstrong, Simon MacCorkindale and Academy Award Winner Louis Gossett Jr. Everyone at Florida's Seaworld is thrilled with the new "Undersea Kingdom", a maze of underwater plexiglass tunnels that permits visitors to get closer to marine life than ever before. The opening ceremonies include many important guests... and one uninvited baby shark who accidentally enters the park's lagoon through a faulty sea gate and subsequently dies. The young shark's 35-foot mother soon follows her offspring, creating the most horrifying tale of terror ever filmed in water. Before she's conquered, this JAWS will have you screaming for your life. Directed by Joe Alves, with s screenplay co-written by Carl Gottlieb who penned the first two blockbusters, and filled with frightening heart-pounding special effects that will keep you out of the water for a long time.

Jaws 3 sees the sons of Sheriff Brody now in Florida, as eldest son Mike (Dennis Quaid) has laid the foundations for a two-year project to bring an underwater structure in the lagoon at Sea World to life. The younger brother, Sean (John Putch) is also visiting, although he is still suffering from a strong phobia about getting in the water, brought about from his harrowing near-death experiences with sharks from his youth. He has reason to fear, as it appears that a young Great White shark has entered the lagoon and is terrorizing the pre-opening day adjustments, having gotten through the filtration system, and begins snacking on whatever it can find. However, when one of the crew ends up viciously chomped, it appears that a much larger shark must have been responsible, as they shudder to realize that the young shark's mother, a massive 35-foot long Great White, has also passed into the park, hungry for the taste of human flesh and underwater Sea World structures. Joe Alves directs. Lou Gossett Jr., Bess Armstrong, Simon McCorkindale, and Lea Thompson also appear.

In this bonus episode Brian is joined by Dan West, Ryan Drost and Scott Schuette as we talk to the Production Designer from Jaws, Joe Alves. Alves has designed three features for Steven Spielberg, The Sugarland Express, Jaws, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He designed the three mechanical sharks for Jaws, with mechanical-effects man Robert Mattey supervising their physical construction in California. Alves worked on Jaws 2 in 1978 as both production designer and as second unit director. Alves directed Jaws 3-D in 1983. Alves started on Jaws, before a finished script, a director, or even a green light from Universal Studios. The Zanuch and Brown Company sent him the galley sheets of the yet to be published best-selling novel and asked him to do large concept sketches of the shark action in the book. Joe researched and after a long search found Robert Mattey, a retired special effects person from Disney that said he could do it. Joe was responsible for the look and action of the shark. Joe, as production designer, also designed the sets and scouted the locations finding Martha’s Vineyard ideal for the film. Joe was on the set whenever the shark was used. He also sat with Spielberg and sketched the storyboards for the third act and was the 2nd unit Director (uncredited). Check out Joe Alves website https://joealvesmovieart.com/ Also, listen to the episode to find out how you could win a copy of Jaws on 4K. JAWS 45th Anniversary Limited Edition is available now!

Movie Meltdown - Episode 277 This week we sit down with one of the most interesting guests we’ve ever had… Joe Alves. He’s an artist, production designer, art director, second unit director, sculptor, director… you name it, if it’s related to bringing a movie to life – Joe’s probably done it. He’s best know for his work on the “Jaws” series of films, but over the years he’s worked on some of the biggest movies in Hollywood, including Forbidden Planet, Torn Curtain, Mutiny on the Bounty, Sleeping Beauty, My Fair Lady, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Starman, The Sugarland Express, Escape from New York and so many others! Joe is a fascinating man with a phenomenal work history… and work ethic. And as we discuss shooting scenes of the shark in Joe’s pool, we also mention… working at Disney, Josh Meador, working with Hitchcock, An American in Paris, rotoscoping, John Cassavetes, sculpting the shark, I got nominated for the NAACP Image Award, I’ve got these young people that I want you to meet, John Carpenter, Portugal, the Id, junior set designer, the left to right shark, Harry Dean Stanton, Hayward California, Mad Men, Moby Dick, Lea Thompson… so cute… so charming, Ken Russell, French impressionist paintings, rendering each frame, Mr. Newman has to eat his asparagus with gloves, 300 storyboards, stealing Antonio Gatti’s architecture, you’re late for the training program, I say… the shark worked or you wouldn’t have been scared, Korean veterans, more shark… more shark… more shark, what wasn’t easy was dealing with the producer, the gas station was supposed to collapse, Louis Gossett Jr., we were at the top of the Twin Towers, edgier Alice in Wonderland, the shark made all these funny noises, Debra Hill, production design, Steven Spielberg, racing formula one cars, Fire Down Below, that guy got nominated for an Academy Award… and he’s putting posters up, drafting, two thousand pounds of weight to pull the barrel down, shooting in 3D, Steven Seagal showed up late… didn’t have his lines and Eisenhower invading Normandy. “The idea that the shark never worked… it was all nonsense!”
In this week's episode, the gang takes a second trip back into the water (this time in 3D!) with the lackluster shark sequel, Jaws 3D! Why did the Sea World folks sign on for this movie? Did Dennis Quaid really need to carry out that cock block? And did Michael Crichton rip this off for "Jurassic Park"? Plus: A beloved film character gets an STD. Jaws 3D stars Dennis Quaid, Bess Armstrong, Louis Gossett Jr., Lea Thompson and Simon MacCorkindale; directed by Joe Alves.
