NFCU's Frick: Tariffs' market impacts will linger with investors

Robert Frick, corporate economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, says that investors should allow the market to settle down and they regain solid footing with their investments, but should use current nervousness and anxiety as a guide on how to remake their portfolio to be more stable regardless of conditions. Frick says he felt that the market was getting scary at the beginning of the year, so he reduced his exposure to stocks and started to prepare against sequence-of-returns risk because he is nearing retirement, and he says investors need to be much more focused on their internal risk-tolerance measures than anything that the market is doing to get through current conditions and plot for a future that is different economically, and that may not come back to the norms of recent years until there is more clarity on policies. Michael Kahn, senior market analyst at Lowry Research Corp., says the stock market had gotten "extremely oversold" before the government's tariff announcements were made, which made for a perfect set-up for a big market decline. While the cause of the downturn is unusual, Kahn says that the technicals are not, and that investors should be looking for confirmation that the tide is turning; even then, however, he warned that investors should be cautious buyers, at least until tariff plans are more clear and certain. Plus John Cole Scott, president of Closed-End Fund Advisors — the chairman of the Active Investment Company Alliance — checks in on how closed-end funds have performed since the tariff announcement, particularly bond funds that have seen yields changing as part of the fixed-income market's response to the news; he discusses discount levels, strategies that closed-end fund investors might use now, and how the current situation compares in closed-end funds to the market decline around the Covid pandemic.

He focuses on supply/demand analysis to interpret the market's movements, and is still bullish overall. He favors financials, despite calling them a little “overheated,” but doesn't like health care. ======== Schwab Network ======== Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. In this special The Weekly Driver podcast episode, Michael Kahn takes the reins from longtime hosts James Raia and Bruce Aldrich in an interview with Raia, who reflects on the journey in automotive journalism and podcasting over the past seven years. Raia leans forward and with a bit of a journalistic tone, he casually shares, "After reviewing cars every week for 21 years, I still find myself asking, 'What's the story behind this car?'” With candid humor and heartfelt anecdotes, Raia shares the story of how he and Aldrich built the podcast from scratch, interviewing everyone from car enthusiasts next door to industry giants like the CEO of Fiat. This conversation covers career-defining moments, memorable guests, and why cars are more than just machines—they're connections to our history, personalities, and even families. "Some of our best episodes were just like having a coffee with a friend—it's like you forget the mic is even there," Raia reminisces fondly. Whether you're a car lover or just love a great story, James Raia and Michael's final chat offers a look back at the people, places, and stories that made "The Weekly Driver" an enduring success and where it is going from here. Michael Kahn and James Raia driving the 2023 Lucid Air Pure. Transcript Michael Kahn: All righty. Well, weekly driver podcast final episode with James Raia being taken over by myself, Michael Kahn. What are we doing here? James Raia: We're doing a final podcast of the weekly driver Bruce Aldrich and I started it more than seven years ago, and I think we're, we went past 275 episodes. We mostly did it weekly because the site's the weekly driver, and that was corresponding to the fact that I test drove cars for each week for about 20 years before you purchased the site. And Bruce and I decided to do this podcast on a whim and we just had a blast that we got to meet a lot of important people in the car world some internationally famous, some locally famous, people with used cars, people with vintage cars, people with new cars, book authors, all kinds of different people. Analysts, anybody who was marginally related to the automotive field; we interviewed a lot of people. Michael Kahn: Yeah, in listening through all of your episodes over the past seven years, you have such a diverse array of subjects and people you've talked to, friends you've made, and just the way that you ask your questions and tell people or let people tell their stories. It's a really good podcast. James Raia: Thank you. Michael Kahn: And I know that I'm taking over and of course I have my own personality and my own direction, which is fine. James Raia: Sure. Michael Kahn: But I'm excited just to leave these episodes up and let people continue to listen to them. And also they're, they're timeless. The things that you talk about aren't relevant to whether they were published last week or seven years ago, they remain very interesting and they're certainly worth revisits and I'm sure you have plenty of favorites. James Raia: Oh, absolutely. I think, before discussing some of the favorites, one of the things that made the podcast work, at least as far as I'm concerned, is that Bruce and I have been friends for a very long time. Michael Kahn: Yeah, how did you meet Bruce? James Raia: Bruce was a Triathlete, a pretty prominent local triathlete, and I worked at the Sacramento Bee years ago, and I did a story on him. Michael Kahn: Sacramento Bee, being the Sacramento based newspaper. James Raia: Yeah, back then Sacramento Bee was it was the daily newspaper in Sacramento for a long time and now it's six days a week. And it back in the day, you know 30 years ago, it had a large budget and I was interested in endurance sports, I still am. And Bruce, I'd heard about Bruce and we met, did a story on him. And, we struck up a friendship and, Bruce inherited from his father a 1959 Volkswagen bug, and I had an old Volkswagen bug.

Amar Reganti, fixed income strategist at the Hartford Funds, says that the Federal Reserve normally starts cutting rates only when something has gone wrong, but there doesn't seem to be any portion of the U.S. economy that is so over-leveraged that it craters as/when a rate-hike cycle ends. If nothing surfaces, Reganti says this may be the generational anomaly where the central bank actually achieves a soft landing, conditions where the softening economy may go through a recession but without getting really ugly. Michael Kahn, senior market analyst at Lowry Research Corp., says that the market's technicals are all looking good, a sign that investors should keep riding this trend rather than worrying about backing away from it just because the market is in record-high territory. Today on Art of the Cut, Steven Spielberg's long-time collaborators - Oscar-winner, Michael Kahn, ACE, and Sarah Broshar, discuss editing “The Fablemans.” Sarah Broshar was nominated for an ACE Eddie for Spielberg's “The Post.” Her credits also include “Ready Player One,” Pet Sematary,” and “West Side Story.” One of Michael Kahn's early jobs as an editor was cutting “Hogan's Heroes.” Then he went on to cut at least 70 feature films. Some highlights: Close Encounters of the Third Kind for which he was nominated for an Oscar, ALL of the Indiana Jones movies for which he won an Oscar for Raiders, Poltergeist, The Goonies, The Color Purple, Fatal Attraction for which he was nominated for another Oscar, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List for which he won another Oscar, Saving Private Ryan - another Oscar win, Lincoln - another Oscar nomination, Ready Player One and West Side Story. And he was honored with the career Achievement Award by American Cinema Editors and probably has enough films since then to get the award again.

In the Big Interview, Richard Smith of The RISK Rituals newsletter -- chief executive at the Foundation for the Study of Cycles -- talks about current market movements and how investors can better deal with risk. Michael Ordonez of Thornburg Investment Management, says in The NAVigator that the difficult environment for income-oriented investors, coupled with regulatory changes allowing for a more consumer-friendly structure led to the firm creating its first-ever closed-end fund, and that he expects more funds to take up the new structure. And in the Market Call, Andrey Kutuzov, portfolio manager for Seven Canyons Advisors, discusses small-cap growth investing around the globe.

When editor and 1st AE Chris Patterson reached out to me earlier this year, he was stuck trying to figure out how to convince his colleagues he was ready to edit. He knew he had the skills, but he didn't have the experience (or the credits) such that people were willing to take the chance on him. Not even six months later after working with me in the Optimizer coaching & mentorship program he posted this in the #wins channel in our Slack community: Editor Chris Patterson has spent much of his career as the lead 1st AE working with some of the biggest names in editing & directing. A short list of the features he's worked on includes Ready Player One, The Post, Royal Tenenbaums, Zero Dark Thirty, The Town, and Analyze That. And Chris has worked with editors such as Michael Kahn, Dylan Tichenor, Billy Goldenberg, and many more. But when Chris decided it was time to make the transition into the editor's chair, he hit more than a few roadblocks: One of his biggest fears was “bothering people” in his outreach. Another fear was “selling himself” without sounding egotistical about his level of skill and experience in the industry (I mean c'mon...he's worked with Spielberg!). And ultimately he didn't know how to address the “elephant in the room” that he didn't have enough editing credits for someone to take a chance on him. When the pandemic hit and Hollywood shut down, Chris recognized that he was ready to make the transition to editor. Yet his fears of bothering people and asking for help left him feeling stuck and unsure of how to make the change. That's when he joined the Optimizer community and learned some valuable lessons and tools which led him to getting a job editing his first feature. In today's conversation, Chris talks about the challenges he faced with networking, the mindset shifts he made, and the a-ha moments he had to get him unstuck and moving to the next level of his career. And in the later half of the interview you'll hear me put Chris on the Hot Seat as we prepare him for how to confidently sell himself as a capable editor that any producer would hire for his next project. → Click here to learn more about working with me in the Optimizer program Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: How Chris got his first job working with Michael Kahn Explanation of the two traps that keep you stuck in a career you have outgrown. What practical questions you need to ask yourself when making a career transition. The final straw that got Chris to say no to the assistant jobs and risk going for an editing gig. The most valuable lesson that you don't learn in film school. Chris's strategy for convincing people that he can be an editor. The lessons he learned by working with the best editors in the business. The key takeaway Chris got from my Advanced Networking class. An exercise anyone can do to sell yourself with confidence. How to structure your story so that your skills sell your ability when your experience doesn't yet. Set realistic expectations to set yourself up for success and not failure. Forty years ago, Indiana Jones swung onto movie theater screens with his first epic adventure hot on the heels of some nasty Nazis in search of the Ark of the Covenant. Created by George Lucas and Philip Kaufman, and brought to life by screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan, producer Frank Marshall, and director Stephen Spielberg. The film also featured a score by John Williams, cinematography by Douglas Slocombe, editing by Michael Kahn, and starred Harrison Ford in the title role as archaeologist/adventurer/college professor Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones, Jr. While the film spawned a major franchise, it was a success in it's own right, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year and winning five Oscars.
