It was April 3rd when a band of American Soldiers teamed up with Austrian Resistance Fighters and Defected Vermach forces, tipped off by a Croatian Prisoner and a Czech Cook, marched to a castle in the Alps to save the lives of a bunch of French Political Prisoners, 2 Prime Ministers and a Tennis Star. The Story of Castle Itter is one of strange bedfellows and unparalleled bravery where 30 men would hold off over 100 SS officers in one of the strangest battles of World War 2. The battle of Castle Itter was fought on 5 May 1945, in the Austrian village of Itter in the North Tyrol region of the country, during the last days of the European Theater of World War II. Troops of the 23rd Tank Battalion of the 12th Armored Division of the US XXI Corps led by Captain John C. "Jack" Lee, Jr., a number of Wehrmacht soldiers led by Major Josef "Sepp" Gangl, SS-Hauptsturmführer Kurt-Siegfried Schrader, and recently freed French prisoners of war defended Castle Itter against an attacking force from the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division until relief from the American 142nd Infantry Regiment of the 36th Division of XXI Corps arrived. Our theme song was written and performed by Anna Bosnick. If you'd like to support the show on a per episode basis, you can find our Patreon page here. Be sure to check our website for more details.

The Battle of Castle Itter was one of the most bizarre actions of World War II and just one of the interesting events we discuss with noted historian and author Professor John C. McManus. John is often called upon as a subject matter expert for numerous television programs and has authored 14 books on military history. Battle of Castle Itter began on May 5, 1945 during the last days of war in the European theatre and five days after Hitler committed suicide. While some German soldiers were committed to a fight to the death, others were more pragmatic. SS officer Kurt Siegfried-Schrader approached US Captain Jack Lee to tell him that about a group of high level French prisoners being held in Castle Itter and his concern they might be slaughtered by Nazi fanatics. What ensued was something strait out of a movie plot; German soldiers, a French tennis star and a pair of World War I French Generals fighting side by side with American Soldiers defending a medieval castle against overwhelming odds. Maintaining the “Castle Theme” we also discuss the fight to capture Fort Montbarey. The Fort was constructed in the 1700's but proved exceptionally resistant to modern weaponry. The Fort was finally captured when combat engineers used a very medieval tactic; tunneling under the castle walls and placing explosives. John's latest book “Island Infernos” is the latest in a series of books he has written about the Army's role in the Pacific War. John began the series because he believes the Army's role in that theatre is often overshadowed by the Marines and Navy. The book exposes several interesting details. These include the capture of a key communications code book that allowed the allies to unlock Japanese communications for nine months and General MacArthur's “cult of personality.”

This week's episode is a corker. Harrison delves into the post-colonial world of the Zambian Afronauts. That's right, whilst the Cold War was raging and both the Americans and Soviets were throwing everything, including the kitchen sink at getting a man on the moon, the possibly most unlikely nation on earth decided to throw its hat into the ring. Well, more specifically, Edward Mukuka Nkoloso wanted to put Zambians on the moon and Mars! It's a crazy story that involves the budding afronauts being pushed down hills in oil barrels and swung from trees in tyres to simulate the lack of gravity on the celestial bodies. You have to listen to believe it.Chris meanwhile relays the story of the only documented time that the Americans fought side-by-side with the Germans during World War II to defend a number of high-profile French VIPs from certain death at the hands of the SS. If the story of the Battle for Castle Itter wasn't true, it could easily have been thought up by a budding Hollywood screenwriter, it's so strange. In the dying days of World War II, a German Wehrmacht unit of roughly 20 men and just seven Americans battled through the night to save the VIPs. A possibly stranger tale doesn't exist from World War II!Harrison's SourcesZambiaThe Time When Zambia Tried To Go To MarsAfronauts – Zambia's Space ProgramThe Zambian “Afronaut” Who Wanted to Join the Space RaceMeet ‘The Afronauts': An Introduction to Zambia's Forgotten 1960s Space ProgramImage of the News ArticleChris' SourcesWikipedia article on Battle of Castle Itter The Battle for Castle Itter If you enjoyed this episode please leave us a review on iTunes, or wherever you get your podcasts! We'd really appreciate it. Episode geeklist Here's something I haven't done in a while: a one-off podcast. In other words, this isn't the start of a multi-episode, multi-month exploration of one battle/war. Instead, this is a single episode about (mostly) a single topic, WW2's Long Range Desert Group. I vaguely remembered hearing something about history, then earlier this year the French wargaming magazine Vae Victis featured the LRDG in their issue game. It was a small, solitaire design, and I tweeted about how I was intrigued. A friend recommended a book to read about it, and soon I discovered another solitaire game on it. That was enough for me--it sounded like the makings of a podcast episode. This episode also features an interview with wargame designer David Thompson. He created Pavlov's House and has Castle Itter coming up next, both published by DVG. As you'll hear, he's got some other games on the way from other publishers, too. In fact, his interview is primarily about what it's like to get a wargame published, particularly the part about pitching a project to a publisher. He's researching the LRDG himself for a project, so the interview was perfect timing. Movies & Video • Sea of Sand • Lost in Libya: In Search of the LRDG • Battlestorm Lite - LRDG (3 parts including Moore's March) Books • Sand , Wind, and War, by Ralph Alger Bagnold • Incident at Jebel Sherif, by Kuno Gross, Roberto Chiarvetto, Brendan O'Carroll • Killing Rommel, by Steven Pressfield Discussions • Long Range Desert Group versus aircraft Next I'm going to start playing some WW2 East Front games. It's an enormous topic, one of the centerpieces of our hobby. My knowledge about it is fairly limited, but I'm learning a bunch already. Also, I've naturally got quite a number of wargames on the topic already. With a subject this large, there are several smaller options out there, just like I prefer. I'm starting with Frank Chadwick's introductory classic, Battle for Moscow. I've started a geeklist about with these games, too. If you're not a Twitter user (or don't follow me), but still want to see my photos and short videos about some wargames, just go to http://www.twitter.com/WargamesToGo. Feedback here or there is always welcome.

Historian Stephen Harding discusses the amazing battle of Castle Itter. It was the only battle in World War II where German and American military forces fought together.
The closing days of World War II witnessed a bizarre battle with some unlikely allies: American and German soldiers joined forces to rescue a group of French prisoners from a medieval castle in the Austrian Alps. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll follow the Battle for Castle Itter, the only time that Allies and Germans fought together in the war. We'll also dodge another raft of aerial bombs and puzzle over a bottled pear. Intro: In 1917, Royal Flying Corps trainee Graham Donald fell out of his plane at the top of a loop.
