I am sure you know people who love to offer unsolicited advice. And if you think back to the last time someone offered it to you – you likely didn't follow it. No one does. This episode starts by revealing why people hate unsolicited advice and what works so much better if you want to get someone to do something. https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/do-the-right-thing/201407/giving-people-advice-rarely-works-does We have known for a long time that the human heart is not really involved with emotions. You can't really love someone with all your heart – that's not what the heart does. Still, we talk about love and the heart as being connected. Why? That's just one of the things I discuss with my guest Dr. Vincent Figueredo. He is a practicing cardiologist, professor of medicine and author of the book, The Curious History of the Heart: A Cultural and Scientific Journey (https://amzn.to/4hlJQfa). Listen as he also reveals just how amazing your heart is, what it does and what it is like to hold a beating human heart in his hands! We can all help people make real positive changes in their lives by taking some very small actions. That's according to important research conducted by my guest Greg Walton, PhD. He is the co-director of the Dweck-Walton Lab and a professor of psychology at Stanford University. Listen as he explains what he calls “Ordinary Magic” – small steps that can be very influential in keeping people on track and help them become the people they want to be. Greg is author of book called Ordinary Magic: The Science of How We Can Achieve Big Change with Small Acts (https://amzn.to/4ihZlGa) Do you know what the difference is between a habit and an addiction? While they seem similar, there is an important distinction. Listen as I explain the difference. The gut is all the rage these days. Many an influencer has built a platform on how to keep our digestive systems happy, healthy and moving. But humans have long fetishized the gut. Doctors and philosophers have deliberated its influence on our emotional stability. Theologians declared it wicked. Disposing of bodily waste in both sanitary and silent ways is a mark of modernity. Historian Elsa Richardson found it all utterly fascinating. So she wrote a book to probe the organ's colorful and often boisterous past. This week, she joins host Kerri Miller on Big Books and Bold Ideas to explore the age-old question: Are we really ruled by our stomachs?

Göran Sommardalpoet, översättare och kritikerLitteraturVincent M. Agnes Arnold-Forster explores the surprising cultural history of the emotion, from the longing "Ostalgie" felt for a lost East Germany to the Victorian love of all things medieval. Speaking to Ellie Cawthorne, she also outlines how nostalgia has been weaponised by both sides of the political spectrum, and considers whether it could be a force for good. Episode 713: Vincent Figueredo - The Curious History of the Heart: A Cultural and Scientific Journey

The Avid Reader Show

For much of recorded history, people considered the heart to be the most important organ in the body. In cultures around the world, the heart-not the brain-was believed to be the location of intelligence, memory, emotion, and the soul. Over time, views on the purpose of the heart have transformed as people sought to understand the life forces it contains. Modern medicine and science dismissed what was once the king of the organs as a mere blood pump subservient to the brain, yet the heart remains a potent symbol of love and health and an important part of our cultural iconography. This book traces the evolution of our understanding of the heart from the dawn of civilization to the present. Vincent M. Figueredo-an accomplished cardiologist and expert on the history of the human heart-explores the role and significance of the heart in art, culture, religion, philosophy, and science across time and place. He examines how the heart really works, its many meanings in our emotional and daily lives, and what cutting-edge science is teaching us about this remarkable organ. Figueredo considers the science of heart disease, recent advancements in heart therapies, and what the future may hold. He highlights the emerging field of neurocardiology, which has found evidence of a "heart-brain connection" in mental and physical health, suggesting that ancient views hold more truth than moderns suspect.Ranging widely and deeply throughout human history, this book sheds new light on why the heart remains so central to our sense of self.Buy the book from Wellington Square Bookshop - https://wellingtonsquarebooks.indiecommerce.com/book/9780231208185

An MBA is seen by many aspiring executives as a rite of passage and a necessary step in order to develop their network, hone their skills and fine-tune their hard won business acumen. While once upon a time the top business schools tended to serve an almost exclusively male audience, thankfully these days business schools around the world make a significant effort to enhance the diversity of their student bodies and to be as inclusive as possible. Yet as our guests today have highlighted in recent research, in an odd twist of history, those same universities catering for an essentially male student body also provided special classes for their wives. To explore this further I am delighted to be joined by Allison Elias and Rolv Petter Amdam. Allison Elias is an assistant professor at University of Virginia Darden School of Business. Her research investigates historical and contemporary issues of gender and diversity in organizations, with a focus on the influence of social movements on corporate practices. Allison's forthcoming book charts the trajectory of modern feminism at work illuminating the failures of equality-based frameworks and merit-based human resource management practices. Rolv Petter Storvik Amdam is a Professor of Business History at BI Norwegian Business School and was previously dean of BI's executive programmes. His research and publications focus on a range of areas including • Business education and career development • International development of executive education * Internationalization procesess * Globalization and industrial clusters, focusing on the maritime industry The article referred to is available here: https://journals.aom.org/doi/abs/10.5465/amle.2020.0129 You can find out more about Allison and Elias on their respective homepages: https://www.darden.virginia.edu/faculty-research/directory/allison-elias https://www.bi.edu/about-bi/employees/department-of-strategy-and-entrepeneurship2/rolv-petter-storvik-amdam/
