In this Bonus episode of Drinks and a Movie, Shane Schildmeyer joins me to discuss Mystery Men (1999), the cult superhero comedy starring Ben Stiller, William H. Macy, and Janeane Garofalo. This offbeat film follows a group of misfit vigilantes—like Mr. Furious, The Shoveler, and The Bowler—who must step up when Champion City's beloved hero, Captain Amazing, is captured by the diabolical Casanova Frankenstein. Blending absurd humor, quirky powers, and late-'90s comic book flair, Mystery Men is a wild ride, but does it hold up?We pair this with the classic and reliable Old Forester Signature 100 Bourbon.

We are back with another adventure in our Capes 'N Cowards season! Last week we brought you the adventures of The Venture Bros. but this week we return fully to the worlds of superheroes. On today's episode, we are covering one of the weirder superhero films, we are talking about Mystery Men. Mystery Men is a film loosely based on Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot Comics. It follows a group of misfits, weirdos, and outcasts from the superhero world of Champion City. The team is "lead" by Mr. Furious and features the Shoveler and the Blue Raja. As the world turns quickly turmoil, this group of weirdos has to find more like them to make a team to save the world. These aren't the cream of the crop but more like the heroes you call when everyone else is busy but they've got the heart to save the world. The film has one of the most impressive cast lists including Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Greg Kinnear, Claire Forlani, Kel Mitchell, Paul Reubens, Janeane Garofalo, Wes Studi, Geoffrey Rush, Lena Olin, Suzy Izzard, and Tom Waits. The cast is stacked with absolutely incredible talent and features a handful of cameos that still blow me away. Who decided Michael Bay would play a frat boy supervillain? I just want to shake their hands. Cid and Dan talk about the film at length. Cid gives their thoughts on what the film is trying to capture. They also get into how the film has aged but more so how it was ahead of it's time. As the superhero film craze gets closer and closer to bursting, it's the best time to take a look back at Mystery Men which satirized these films before they even existed. If there was any film that was released before its time, it is Mystery Men. It sits in a place before the superhero craze changed film forever. Make sure to check out our past episodes including the first episode of the season which covers The Boys which you can see a lot of inspiration from this film in.

The third installment of Good Movie Podcast? brings us to the cyberpunk metropolis of Champion City. The most popular and powerful superhero in this town is the sponsor-friendly Captain Amazing. This story, however, focuses on a trio of more unlikely heroes. Mr. Furious, the Shoveler, and the Blue Raja finally get their chance to shine when Captain Amazing is kidnapped by the villainous Casanova Frankenstein. This oddball team is soon joined by the Spleen, the Invisible Boy, and the Bowler. Even with the training provided by the mysterious Sphinx (and some gadgets provided by a genius inventor), the team might not be ready for the big leagues. Unfortunately, they may not have time to figure themselves out before Casanova's doomsday weapon takes Champion City off the map. This cult classic may not be winning any awards, but it certainly won Dan's heart. We do hope you'll join us for yet another Good Movie Podcast?, and help us decide if this movie is simply silly or something more sinister... Grab your fur coats and forks, it's time to face the biggest evil Champion City has ever known: common sense and a gun. This week we take on the blockbuster fail that is Mystery Men, a film that is SO much more relevant today than it was in 1999. We have heroes, we have villains, and we have corporate sponsors. Our team is a ragtag group of amateur heroes with questionable abilities: shovels, spoons, temper tantrums?, and a boy who can turn invisible when nobody is looking. The antagonists on the other hand, have lasers, guns, flammable hair care, and brains. Will the terribly mysterious Sphinx guide them on their path, or will their path guide them? All I can say is Erin and Brennan are consumed with RAGE that more people don't love this film.

In the small quaint town of Springfield, Oh life on a normal day seems joyful and quiet. Springfield has many nicknames, like the Champion City, named after the large farm equipment manufacturer that eventually would be known as International Harvester. The city is also known as the Home City or the City of Roses, each portraying a warm and kind city in the heart of the state of Ohio. It is home to one of the country's oldest universities, Wittenburg University with it's campus of rolling hills and beautiful oak trees. Springfield has many beautiful parks for people to walk, play, and just relax. But on the night of July 9, 2007 the darkness of this quiet town hid the act of a horrible human being. That night the calm of the city was disturbed by the call of a Springfield City Police Officer stating he may have hit a person lying in the dark street of a city park. The officer had come upon the body of Miss Buffy Jo Freeman. She had been badly beaten and possibly strangled to death by a monster in the dark. Today Buffy's killer has not been exposed and they are the only one to know about her One Bad Night in the Park. Please Listen to the podcasts and where available leave a comment or suggestion. From box-office bomb to cult classic, Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria and William H. Macy lead a movie about superheroes with unimpressive powers in Mystery Men. Directed by Kinka Usher, Mystery Men is the superhero comedy film loosely based on Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot Comics. Luke and Jae revist this 1999 feature film which dissected the superhero genre in the early years of the genre's great emergence. Champion City already has a superhero in Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear), but that doesn't deter the city's seven quirky amatueur crime-fighters, who use the Captain's capture at the hands of villain Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush) as motivation to prove themselves. The only problem is that their strange powers - silverware hurling, bowling, shovel skills, incompetent invisibility, and deadly flatulence - aren't doing them any favours.

TV & Movie Reviews: Mystery Men (1999) Back in the days when comic book movies were very hit and miss, this attempt at a superhero spoof is thought of fondly by some. It didn't do too badly critically but flopped at the box office and didn't fair much better on home video. But could there be influences on what came after be found? Plot Summary: In order to generate more endorsement revenue, Champion City's resident superhero Captain Amazing arranges for the release of super villain Casanova Frankenstein, only to be captured by him. The city's fate rests in the hands of seven loser superhero wannabes: the fork-flinging Blue Rajah, the shovel-wielding Shoveler, the possessed bowling ball-hurling Bowler, the flatulent Spleen, the only-when-nobody's-looking Invisible Boy, the mysterious Sphinx, and the perpetually-angry Mr. Furious. www.twitter.com/comicsinmotionp comicsinmotionpodcast@gmail.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/comics-in-motion-podcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/comics-in-motion-podcast/support

This week on Alcohollywood, Mystery Month continues with the 1999 superhero comedy Mystery Men! This campy tale of a group of misfit superheroes who attempt to save Champion City from the evil Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush) is definitely interesting in concept - and helped by a great cast - but the script is incredibly spotty. Director Kinka Usher's schizophrenic direction and the poorly aged music and song choices don't help, but the film manages to find quite a few moments of self aware superhero comedy. However, none of this leads o a film that add up to more than the sum of its parts. Guest Jesse joins us for our review and drinking game, along with a quiz - check it out!

While Scott is away on a long-delayed honeymoon, I've been left with the keys to the studio. And that means no "typical" in-studio interview this episode. But Scott's absence, while exceedingly lonely, gave me the opportunity to get out there and chat with people. And since it seems that this week, there's tons of stuff going on in Champion City, I spoke with Kandrix Foong organizer of Edmonton Expo; Matthew Dykstra one of the co-organizers of Extra Life Edmonton; and Ryan Ro, a local musician and Unknown Studio alumnus. Here's the episode breakdown: 0:00: Intro - "Loneliness" 2:43: Kandrix Foong and the first annual Edmonton Expo 12:22: Extra-Life with Matthew Dykstra 27:57: Ryan Ro on music and his album At Last My Dear 50:44: "Melancholy Green," track 2 from Ryan's album Photo by Mr T in DC on Flickr. You might not know this, but Scott and I are fashionable. At least, that's what CityandDale.com founder and editor Kendall Barber told us. Fashion is one of those words that can be pretty loaded for some people, but Kendall took us through her idea of fashion, and what it means to be fashionable in Edmonton. It was a great chat. Kendall is going places, right here in Champion City.
