This week, I'm reading the nineteenth chapter of the Peter David penned movie novelization of the 1991 Rocketeer film. This chapter takes place in the study of Howard Hughes, the inventor of the Cirrus X-3 rocketpack in the world of the film (in Dave Steven's original story, it was his unnamed analogue of Doc Savage). In this scene, you can see what's in Cliff's pockets, a Dave Stevens cameo as an ill-fated German rocketeer, an animated film featuring German rocket troopers, and references to the Spruce Goose (the Hughes H-4, a gargantuan - 218 ft long with a 319 ft wingspan - wooden flying boat meant to ferry men and equipment across the Atlantic during WW2). Interestingly enough, the book has Cliff hang glide from Howard Hughes' study all the way to the Chaplin airfield (which was actually filmed in Santa Maria, CA, some 150+ miles northwest)! Presumably, the airfield in the movie was not actually in Santa Maria. That said, there is a museum there, the Santa Maria Museum of Flight, that has a number of remaining props used in the film, as it was the real life hangar used in the film (check out this clip for some very thorough detective work of filming locations). Although it aired on Disney Channel around the time the movie was released, Rocketeer: Excitement in the Air (both a featurette on the film as well as a documentary on manned flight hosted by Billy Campbell) has some shots of the real life Spruce Goose as well as some shots of its maiden (and only) flight as well as some info on Howard Hughes. It's well worth a watch! On this episode of the Migration Waterfowl podcast, your host Brian Halbleib talks with Billy Campbell from Texas. Most, if not all of you, know Billy from his association with the Dr. Duck Company, the Dr. Duck YouTube channel or from way back on Realtree's Black Cloud series. We discuss Billy's experiences in duck hunting, reflecting on the challenges he faced during the season, the importance of enjoying the journey, and the evolution of his hunting techniques. Billy shares insights into his background, his love of the challenge of public land hunting, and the logistics of capturing their adventures on video. We talk about the importance of realism in hunting content and showcasing the camaraderie in the waterfowl hunting community. Billy also shares his experiences in the business side of waterfowl hunting, the importance of building relationships in the field, and the impact of faith on his life and career. He discusses the challenges and joys of working with cameramen, the evolution of his approach to his outdoor adventures, and the significance of cherishing memories beyond the hunt. We also touch on honoring service and sacrifice, as well as the importance of gratitude and respect in both of our personal and professional realms. We've been so blessed with great camera guys. We want to highlight the work of public land hunters. It's about the real experience of hunting. We want to bring attention to the great work. The reality of filming nature can differ from expectations. Building relationships in the field is crucial for success. Young filmmakers bring a strong work ethic to the industry. Adapting to comfort in outdoor adventures enhances the experience. Faith plays a significant role in personal and professional journeys. Cherishing memories is often more important than the hunt itself. Honoring service and sacrifice is essential in our society. Gratitude for opportunities can lead to a more fulfilling life. The Rocketeer is a 1991 American superhero film from Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Joe Johnston, it stars Billy Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin, Timothy Dalton, Paul Sorvino, and Tiny Ron Taylor. It is based on the character of the same name created by comic book artist and writer Dave Stevens.Set in 1938 Los Angeles, California, The Rocketeer tells the story of stunt pilot Cliff Secord, who discovers a hidden rocket pack that he thereafter uses to fly without the need of an aircraft. His heroic deeds soon attract the attention of Howard Hughes and the FBI, who are hunting for the missing rocket pack, as well as the Nazi operatives who stole it from Hughes. What's not to love? We've got a packed house for this episode in Hollywoodland. Connor, Frank, Matt and Peter all made sure to clear their schedules to talk about what's become something of a hidden gem. Accompanied by a stellar score by James Horner, join the boys as we go back to the early days of the super hero genre. You can watch The Rocketeer on Disney+. Be sure to follow us on Instagram.

This week, it's not me reading the next chapter of the Peter David penned movie novelization of the 1991 Rocketeer film. That's because we have a special guest - Billy Campbell, who played the Cliff Secord / the Rocketeer in the 1991 film - is taking point to read Chapter 14! Billy was last on the show in 2022 (follow this link for a preview of an exclusive podcast recorded for people who had supported fundraising efforts for the Hairy Cell Leukemia Foundation in memory of Rocketeer creator, Dave Stevens). This chapter takes place in one my favorite parts of the original comic and the film, the Bulldog Cafe. If you like ambient, mood-setting background noise / "study music," you will love this this Bulldog Cafe-inspired video as if you were sitting in a booth of the Cafe. Episode 500 is coming in a few weeks! If you were a past guest on the show, check your messages this week for more details on the recording session on 3/2/25.Thanks, Billy, for your excellent reading, and thank you for listening!∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast, a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour, and access to retro 80s soundtrack!Like what you see or hear? Fox's Melrose Place was intended to be an introspective drama about young adult life in 1990s L.A. But by Season 2, the show leaned into its soapy elements, with ever-shifting love triangles, backstabbing office rivalries, and more than a few iconic villains stealing babies, faking pregnancies, and even blowing up the apartment complex. At its height, the show reached nearly 15 million viewers, and its young and restless stars were EVERYWHERE. The show ended on a whimper in 1999, and had a mediocre CW revival in 2009. But for this Patreon-sponsored episode, we're going to back Melrose, as the Great Pop Culture Debate seeks to determine the Best Melrose Place Character. Characters discussed: Sydney Andrews, Lexi Sterling, Jane Mancini, Jo Reynolds, Dr. Michael Mancini, Billy Campbell, Megan Lewis, Taylor McBride, Amanda Woodward, Jennifer Mancini, Brooke Armstrong, Jake Taylor, Dr. Kimberly Shaw, Dr. Peter Burns, Matt Fielding, Alison Parker. Join host Eric Rezsnyak, Patreon sponsor Bob Erlenback, and Special Guest Stars Courtney Fay and Todd Rezsnyak as they discuss 16 of the most notorious residents of 4616 Melrose Place. [School of Movies 2024] A story ripped straight from the pages of Golden Age comic books, as dastardly gangsters and Nazis on the rise seek out a secret rocket pack that has fallen into the hands of a well-meaning, square-jawed chap who accidentally becomes something of a superhero. Starring a moustache-twirling Timothy Dalton, a luminous Jennifer Connelly, along with Billy Campbell, Alan Arkin and Paul Sorvino, this is a favourite of many of our listeners and was commissioned by Sarah Montgomery. We kick off a Christmas season of commissions, and considering how stressful November was for everyone, we have decided to set the tone for 2025 by seeking out pure joy. They will be movies we will love talking about enthusiastically, and focusing on to bring you folks a measure of weekly happiness in a dark time. The ones we have chosen for this December all seem to have that joy in common, as well as an old fashioned sensibility. We have A Christmas Story coming up next week, then Ultraman Rising, then at New Year's we have The Mask, and to see in January it's Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl!
Tread Perilously's Cornucopia of Sci-Fi concludes with a Caprica episode called "False Labor." After each of the main characters has troubled dreams, Joseph Adama awakes to another day of work while his brother, Sam, plots to send guns to Tauron. Daniel Greystone continues to develop Resurrection technology and perfect a simulacrum of his wife, Amanda. She, meanwhile, works to embed herself among the monotheists, even if one one of their number doubts her intentions. Trouble continues to brew behind the scenes at Greystone's business. The mob gets ever closer, and a prototype Cylon Centurion makes a startling contribution to the day's events. Erik and Justin can't help but examine Caprica through the eyes of jaded former Battlestar Galactica fans. Ronald D. Moore ends up in the hot seat even though he had little to do with Caprica. The duo split on star Paula Malcomson's performance. Esai Morales easily wins their hearts, though. Erik sees why Eric Stoltz was fired from Back to the Future. Despite not appearing in the episode, Caprica marketing star Alessandra Torresani merits discussion. Episode director John Dahl leads to a chat abput Rounders and the career of Gretchen Mol. The major Cylon problem infects Caprica and Erik gives The 4400's Billy Campbell some credit.

Legends of Halloween has come to the end of the road. A twisty cliffside road high in the Carpathian Mountains. And at the end of that road, there is a castle. Owned by a kindly old count named… Vlad. The year is 1992 and Francis Ford Coppola is bringing Bram Stoker's classic gothic horror novel to the big screen. Starring Gary Oldman in the titular role, the stacked cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Richard E. Grant, Cary Elwes, and Billy Campbell. The adaptation of the 1897 epistolary novel won three Academy Awards - Best Costume Design, Best Sound Editing, and Best Makeup - and debuted in first place at the box office, ultimately grossing over $200 million. Now we're ending October where we began, with a trip to Transylvania and an interview with a vampire - but not just any vampire. This is Bram Stoker's Dracula! A long, long, time ago, season one featured a one-episode family for Billy Campbell. He leared at a sexy lady having car troubles on the side of the road, picked her up literally and figurately, dated her for a week, took the kid to Six Flags, lied to Alison, fought the boy's father, and thought "hasta la vista, baby" was a secret code between him and his step son. But what if Dawn came by later in the series and she was an old girlfriend instead of a rando comedian on the street? Join us as we remix and rewrite Dawn, from season one.

The Rocketeer is a 1991 film set in the late 1930s that follows the story of Cliff Seacord, a stunt pilot who becomes a superhero known as the Rocketeer. The movie was initially released as a Disney film but later changed to Touchstone due to its uncertain target audience. The film has pacing issues and struggled to find its audience, but has gained a cult following in recent years. The cast includes Billy Campbell as Cliff, Jennifer Connelly as Jenny, and Timothy Dalton as the villain Neville Sinclair. The movie draws on real rumors and Hollywood history, incorporating elements like Howard Hughes and Errol Flynn. It also features nods to Betty Page and the Zeppelin. Overall, The Rocketeer is a nostalgic and visually appealing film that blends adventure, romance, and superhero elements. Brendan's mentor and dear personal friend Ronny Maxwell makes a big blue-gray splash in 1993's Gettysburg: the story of the pivotal American Civil War battle and the various monologues and wistful bittersweet remembrances that changed a nation. Ronny gives the war a grandeur steeped in myth and Lost Cause attitudes (though nowhere near its embarrassing sequel Gods and Generals) and some of the most careless beard-work in recent memory. Jason monologues, Brendan listens and in the end, they both die valiantly in the service of different dreams (Editors Note: they do not die). Next week: Eastwood drills! Questions? Comments? Josiah "Doc" Scurlock was a poet, philosopher, intellectual, and a hardened killer long before he ever met Billy the Kid. A mysterious past in Mexico, rumors of dead men from New Orleans to Texas, a penchant for vigilantism, and several close calls with the hostile Natives all made Doc a man to be both feared and respected. However, it was the trials he would face after the Lincoln County War that made Scurlock the man his family would remember. Also discussed: J.J. Dolan, John Riley, Billy Campbell, John Kinney & Jesse Evans.
